Sunday 18 November 2018 Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

From the Dean’s Desk

We are moving very

quickly to the end of the

Church’s liturgical year.

Therefore, it is not

unusual that today’s readings contain a

sense of the ‘end time’ – readings

which seem to deal with the end of the

world as we know it. When we

consider these readings, especially the

first reading and the Gospel [Daniel

12:1-3 and Mark 13: 24-32] we come to

the conclusion that these have to do

more with faith and trust in the ways of

God than simply stating how the world

will end and what will precede that

event. The language and imagery that

are used in these two readings is called

‘apocalyptic’. We hear this term quite

often when we hear of some

catastrophe or tragedy of mega

proportions. This style of literature is

used in the Book of Revelation (also

referred to as the Book of the

Apocalypse). Unfortunately, the film

industry has seized on this type of

language. So many films are set in post

-apocalyptic times – after some major

climactic or nuclear calamity – where

all is destroyed and the world as we

know it does not exist anymore.

In the Biblical sense, apocalyptic

language has to do more with the

revelation of God’s will and the fidelity

of people to that will, than with

predictions of how the world will end.

To understand the apocalyptic is not to

predict the end of the world, but to

appreciate and grasp the meaning of

the triumph and vindication of God’s

Kingdom over the powers of sin and

death.

The Book of Daniel is made up of two

sections: Chapters 1-6 relate the events

of Daniel and his companions – all

faithful followers of God and His Law –

and the Gentile rulers. Chapters 7-12,

from which our first reading comes

[Daniel 12: 1-3], tells of four

apocalyptic visions, relating God’s

victory over unjust rulers. The Gospel

passage for today [Mark 13:24-32]

forms part of the chapter that is

referred to as ‘the little apocalypse’.

Set on the Mount of Olives [v.1-4],

Mark has Jesus warn his disciples

against those impersonating him [v.5-

13]. Jesus then warns of the presence

of false prophets who will make

themselves known after the ‘great

tribulation’ [v. 14-23]. Today’s reading

[v. 24-32] focuses on the element of

fidelity: both on Jesus’ word which will

never pass away, and of the disciples

who in reading the signs of the times, is

able to know that he is near [v. 28-30].

Although we find an amount of

‘apocalyptic’ language in today’s liturgy,

both from Daniel and Mark, we can

appreciate the fact that being

presented on the second last Sunday of

the liturgical year, the meaning of

liturgy is more around the themes of

fidelity, watchfulness, alertness and

trust in the ways of the Lord. These

readings are not so much about what

will occur at the end time – the

description of cosmic and catastrophic

events. They are more an

announcement that God calls us to a

fidelity and trust in his ways. It is a

challenge to us to recognise that no

matter what tribulations occur in life,

we are called to remain faithful to God

and not to be shaken by the seemingly

overpowering elements of sin and evil.

Our second reading from the Letter to

the Hebrews [10:11-14.18], reminds us

of the redemptive quality of Jesus’

sacrifice on the Cross, that unlike the

sacrificial practice of old priesthood,

which are ‘incapable of taking sins

away’, that Christ has offered ‘one

single sacrifice for sin.’ The author

goes on to state that ‘by virtue of that

one single offering, Jesus has achieved

the eternal perfection of all whom he

is sanctifying.’ The redemption won

for us in Christ over sin, evil and death,

then becomes the basis of our trust and

fidelity in God’s ways. Our prayer then

is echoed in the words of our response:

‘Keep me safe, O God, you are my

hope.’ As we come hurriedly to the

end of the Church’s liturgical year, we

are challenged to examine the depth of

our faith and trust in God’s ways and

providence. Am I prepared to show

that faith and trust by the way in which

I live out my Christian commitment?
