St. Michael-Albertville wins team title; New Prague’sGlazer on target for gold medalIn the fourth edition of the State Clay

Target Tournament, New Prague sopho-more Woodrow Glazer won the individualcompetition with a perfect score of 100. St. Michael-Albertville claimed top honors inthe team competition with a score of 480.

The tournament was held June 24 at theMinneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.

Team CompetitionForty teams qualified for the 2017 team

tournament. Teams were made up of fiveshooters and two alternates. Each team’sshooters took aim at 100 targets in fourrounds of 25.

St. Michael-Albertville won the teamchampionship with a score of 480. TheKnights, who finished second at the 2016state tournament, defeated Hibbing, whowas runner-up with a score of 474. Blainewas third at 470.

St. Michael-Albertville’s highest scorer wasLance Berning with a score of 100. TheKnights’ other shooters were Cody Schoen(97), Josh Tutland (95) Kyle Dupont (94),and William Rahne (94).

Rounding out the Top 10 finishers were:Hibbing (474), Blaine (470), Delano (469),Apple Valley (467), Zimmerman (463),Stillwater Area (462), United South Centralof Wells (462), Spring Grove (459), andRogers (458).

New Prague, which won top honors in2016, failed to qualify as a team for this year’stournament.

Individual competitionIt took perfection to win the individual

title and New Prague’s Woodrow Glazer wasthe only competitor to achieve it. The sopho-more hit 100-of-100 targets to capture thegold medal. Glazer finished 10th in 2016.

In achieving a perfect score, Glazer edgedfive shooters that had a score of 99.

Based on the reverse run, tie-breaking cri-teria, these shooters rounded out the topeight places: Jeremy Knight of AlexandriaArea, second; Lane Berning of St. Michael-Albertville, third; Cody Schoen of St.Michael-Albertville, fourth; Jesse Groen ofBlaine, fifth; Jake Nohre of Brandon-Evansville, sixth; Zac Olson of LakevilleSouth, seventh; and Jake Johnson of LakevilleSouth, eighth.

Four more shooters finished in a tie forninth-place with scores of 98 in the field of100 top high school shooters.

Jack Knaus, who claimed championshiphonors in 2016, tied for 19th place. He had afinal score of 96 this year.

About Clay TargetThe activity is all-inclusive and partici-

pants may be male or female or physicallychallenged. All participants are required toobtain a state firearm safety training certifi-cate.

During the 2017 season, there were 11,300Minnesota State High School League partici-pants representing 345 teams.
