A N EW L OOK F OR T H E N EW SL ET TE R! This is the first edition of our newsletter with color, more graphics and ad’s from local businesses. We
have contracted with Liturgical Publications Inc. to print the newsletter. They take care of selling the ads and then print the newsletter for free. The Center cost will be postage mailing costs (that is why it is important that you contact the Center if you no longer wish to receive the newsletter or have a change of address). Let us know what you think of the new look and format. Thank you to the advertisers who have purchased ads. Notice who those advertisers are and tell them we appreciate their support. We will also continue to e-mail the newsletter to those that wish to receive a copy in that manner and those that choose to pick up a copy at the Center. Didn’t the Center look wonderful with the Christmas
tree and all the holiday decorations up during the month of December? Thanks to everyone for setting the tree up and all the elves for adding the decorations. We will be un-decorating the tree on Jan 2 at 9 AM. We can use some volunteers to come and help put things away.
We have held some successful fundraisers this fall. A
special thanks to Gwen Lapp for organizing the sales.
Thanks for your support and to the volunteers that
worked the events. The results were:
Fall Festival (bake sale, craft sale & soup & pie luncheon) -$964. STMA Women of Today Craft Sale - $467 Boutique at the Legacy –$78.25 Craft Sale at the Christmas Party –$37.00
The Center applied for a grant to Wright Hennepin
Electric Cooperative through the Round Up program.
We were awarded $1470 to purchase a new computer
and I-pad. We have added a small desk in the
reception area for the computer – thanks to Gary
Johnson for assembling it.
Best Wishes for a Happy New Year!
Always,
Joyce

SPE CI AL E VE N TS
JANUARY POTLUCK: NOW HEAR THIS! Bring a dish to share for the first 2013 Potluck. After lunch, our speaker Karen Salzl TED Program Spe-
cialist will present an educational session on Tele-phone Equipment. Do you know of family members, friends or neighbors who have difficulty using their telephone? Do they have trouble hearing, speaking or have a physical disability that prevents them from using a standard telephone? The Minnesota Tele-phone Equipment Distribution Program (TED) can provide special telephone equipment at NO CHARGE to Minnesota residents of all ages who qualify. The equipment includes amplified (corded and cordless) phones, speaker phone, captioned tele-phones, telephone ring signalers, deaf blind equip-ment and other special equipment. Date: Monday, January 14

Location: Albertville City Hall
Cost: a donation for the speaker fees
Reservations needed by Thursday, January 10th FEBRUARY POTLUCK: "The Lincoln Assassi-
nation: A Fragile Time" Join us for another Potluck and bring your favorite crock-pot go-to recipe! It could be a casserole, vege-table dish or dessert! If that does not work, just bring your favorite dish to share. After lunch our speaker David Jones will discuss the Lincoln Assassination. When John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War was ending and emotions were high. Killing the President was just part of Booth’s plan. Join us to explore this fragile time in our history and the plot that very nearly succeeded in toppling the government. The Civil War was, with-out question, the greatest challenge to the survival of this country. President Lincoln's leadership allowed
the country to survive and move forward. We are all familiar with the basic story of John Wilkes Booth shooting Lincoln at the theater, but what other forces were at work? Who were the people that Booth pulled into a conspiracy leading eight others to be convicted (including four who were executed)? Dur-ing this presentation, the events of the assassination itself are covered, but much time is spent on the his-torical context.
Date: Monday, February 11
Time: Noon
Location: Albertville City Hall
Cost: a donation for the speaker fees
Reservations needed by Thursday, February 7th

the Edmund Fitzgerald in November of 1975. Mike

Founding Advisory Committee Members
Stepping into the Center you are sure to run into Lo-
la or Earl! They have been with the Center from the
first day back in 2005, when it was just a desk, chair,
telephone and in the old location. They are Adviso-
ry Committee members and Caring Committee
members. If Joyce is not in, look for Lola to be fill-
ing in, and if there is a style show, you can be sure
Lola planned the event! Earl is the go-to guy for
getting the supplies for the Center, be it Rotary,
goods from the local markets, or anything else need-
ed. In 1992 the Hall’s moved to St. Michael from
North Minneapolis. They have been married 61
years, and are blessed with two sons, 9 grandchil-
dren, and 18 great grandchildren. The latest great
granddaughter was named “Lola”, what a tribute to
this Great Grandma Lola!
Founding Advisory Committee Members
If you have been at one of our large dinner functions
you may have noticed a petite dynamo of a woman
getting the coffee perked and making sure it does not
run out! That would be Jackie, assisted by her hus-
band Harold. Harold can also frequently be found
manning the grill expertly, popping the popcorn at
special events, and filling in for Santa in a pinch.
With a rich history of volunteering, Den Mother and
Scout Leader respectively, they know how to get
things done. They have been guiding members of
the Advisory Committee from day one. They began
their life together 68 years ago, as a young married
couple with Harold off to serve in the Infantry dur-
ing WWII. For the past 14 years the couple has
lived in Albertville, and previously in Minneapolis.
They have two sons, two grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren.

Mother's Mixing Bowl
It is just a simplistically designed mixing
bowl made of aluminum. The top lip that forms
the rim to the bowl is smooth an easy to grasp,
making mixing an easy and pleasurable experi-
ence.
One can tell from a quick observation that
this bowl has been well-used. It served as a daily
worker in my mother's kitchen from 1935 until
1995, when both Daddy and Mother had passed
from this life on earth.
Cookie dough, pie crusts, fillings, pud-
ding, bread dough set for rising, pancakes, meat-
balls, ham salad, potato salad, eggs, whipping
cream, cakes, even the coloring that needed to be
added to otherwise colorless oleomargarine all
saw the interior of this bowl.
WRITER’S GROUP If you think you would like to try your hand at re-
cording your memories, writing poetry, short stories,
etc., then join the writing group. Open to everyone,
no experience needed, & no charge. The group
meets twice a month on the 1st & 3rd Mon.
Dates: Monday, Jan. 7, No class on Jan. 21 &
Feb. 4, No class on Feb. 18
Time: 1 – 2:30 PM
Cost: None
I can still picture Mother at the counter,
maybe with a butcher knife in her hand (we had
only one knife to use in the kitchen!) peeling ap-
ples for a pie. Or stirring up a cake, the batter
being mixed with a wooden slotted spoon,
her strong arms creaming the butter and sugar
together; us kids watched in fascination as the
eggs were cracked, and one by one were dropped
into the bowl, the spoon swirling around faster
and faster, until finally the egg yolks were cap-
tured and incorporated into the chemistry of the
kitchen concoction.
"Can I have a taste?" I would ask. And
Mother would dip a teaspoon into the bow's
frothy ingredients, and I would have a sam-
ple. Most often, then I would ask, "Can I lick the
bowl?" Mother did let us kids have any little bit
of batter left over after getting the cake into bak-
ing pans.
When it was Halloween, this bowl was
used to sort out all our collected candy after Trick
-or-Treating was over. The candy kisses, pop-
corn balls, lollipops, candy corn, circus peanuts,
and taffy filled the bowl, providing the four of us
kids with delectable delights for days thereafter.
Of what importance is a mixing bowl for
children who were home alone while their par-
ents were at work? I don't remember just which
one of us kids had the idea first, but we discov-
ered this bowl was perfect for fun.
We took turns plopping our little bottoms
into the bowl, and using our feet, would whirl
round and round on the linoleum floor. Spinning
faster and faster, we laughed with glee as we took
turns in the bowl.
Years later, when I was shopping for toys
for my own children, I saw the "Sit and Spin," a
toy designed to do the same as our bowl did. We
had been too young to recognize the potential our
imaginations could have had on the toy industry!
Mother's mixing bowl. It now belongs to
me. It is wonderful to have this precious bowl as
a part of my household inventory, and I enjoy
having it as a keepsake of those wonderful by-
gone years of my childhood.
