TRACTOR RUN BENEFITS LOCAL DEMENTIA SUPPORT GROUP

Following on from last year’s successful event, a second tractor run took place on the 8th July in support of the Holt & District Dementia Support Group. This year’s run attracted even more participants than last year with 46 tractors taking part on a scorching hot day.The run followed a new route that took in the Wiveton café and snaked back for a cooling crossing of the ford at Glandford. The event attracted tractor owners from across the county and beyond with one vehicle travelling from South Lincolnshire to take part. The tractor run was once more organised by Wally Bloomfield with the generous support of Holt Rugby Club and other local businesses. Paul Reed at P&S Butchers kindly provided a supply of meat for a tasty and well-earned lunch when

the run returned to the Rugby Club and Byfords, Crowe’s Greengrocer and the Folly Tearoom all generously donated a prize for the well-supported raffle on the day. The Holt & District Dementia Support Group would like to thank all those that took part and particularly Wally Bloomfield and all his fellow organisers, who gave of their time to make this such a worthwhile and enjoyable occasion. The event raised the outstanding figure of £828 and all the proceeds will be used to support the various activities of the group within the community. If you would like to learn more about the work of the group, please visit the Holt & District Dementia Support Group website,www.holtdementiasupport.org.uk or call in at the Poppy café, which takes place every Tuesday morning at 10.30am at St. Andrew’s Church Meeting Room.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWSfrom County Councillor Dr. Marie Strong

[email protected] or 07920 286 597 Dear Readers, Local Buses including the Coasthopper: I have received considerable correspondence regarding the increased use of large buses on our narrow roads. Additionally concern has been expressed as to the continuation of rural transport. The latter followed press statements that there is a lack of financial support for services rendered. Please be assured that I place considerable importance on rural transport. Travelling around our division and talking to many residents, I know the often desperate need for public transport and, on occasion untangling a road block, understand the problems. I therefore sought and obtained the following detailed response from Norfolk County Council’s Passenger Transport Manager.“Norfolk County Council recognises that bus services in the rural areas of Norfolk provide a lifeline to many people for access to essential services and in avoiding social and rural isolation. However, we also recognise that operators are working in a difficult financial climate, especially when you consider issues such as rising fuel costs. Norfolk County Council continues to provide financial and operational support to local bus operators and recognises the benefits they bring to local communities. All services need a level of passenger revenue to remain viable so it is important people use and support rural bus services. In all fairness rural bus subsidy levels are lower than ten years ago; Sanders has continued to provide a greater proportion of its rural network on a commercial basis; operating costs have increased over the past few years and it is this combination that will put operators under increased pressure. However, whilst NCC will continue to work as closely as possible with Sanders and other operators, I cannot see the public transport subsidy budget increasing anytime soon, unless there is a greater political emphasis on the importance of public transport and central government increase funding levels. Norfolk has seen a mass withdrawal of one of the biggest international transport companies who claim services were not sustainable. Sanders now cover some of the Coasthopper route and cannot simply purchase and provide smaller vehicles, especially during the infancy of stepping into save the route. Large sums of financial subsidy were introduced to the Coasthopper when the service started and this in turn allowed Norfolk Green to invest in vehicles, however, this money simply is not available now. Sanders provides school transport under contract to NCC and this does go some way to supporting the transport network in the absence of higher direct rural bus subsidies. The knock-on effect is that larger vehicles for larger pupil movements are then linked to rural services and therefore we see the benefit of integration and vehicle coordination. The down side is that larger vehicles are seen in small villages and on country lanes but at least services continue to operate. Sanders have taken a large financial risk and should be given time before pressure is applied to make further investment in vehicles.”School Bus Transport: I was asked if adults were travelling on school buses and can provide the following answer from NCC’s Passenger Transport Manager: “It is s not uncommon for us to provide transport on registered services that are open to the public. This happens in Norfolk and across the country.Home to school transport can be provided in this way under current school transport policy and also goes some way to supporting the bus network. If the policy was to change and students were all required to travel on closed contracts, the subsidised local bus budget (which has shrunk from 8m to 3m over the past 10 years) would need further funding to support the network or we would see commercial services withdrawn as a result. I can understand the concern of some parents but students have been transported on public services for quite some time and even more so in urban areas. Generally this is more of an option for high school students not primary.”Better Broadband for Norfolk Brief Update: Take-up in Norfolk has reached 50% under the first Better Broadband for Norfolk contract, meaning half of all properties that could have taken a broadband

service using infrastructure funded by BBfN have done so. Work is progressing on the new contract which currently Karen O’Kane (Director BBfN) expects we will let by the end of this year. Overall the BfN contract continues to deliver against its contractual obligations. The following is coverage information as at today - source:http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/local/index.php?area=E10000020* Superfast coverage (24Mbps+) in Norfolk has reached 91.48%. It was 42% when BBfN implemented its first cabinet in July 2013* Currently 1.42% of Norfolk properties have access to a speed of less than 2Mbps* Currently 5.76% of Norfolk properties have access to a speed of less than the Government’s Universal Service Obligation of 10Mbps which will be introduced by the end of 2020I hope this month’s information has been useful and send you my good wishes for the summer ahead.Marie, County Cllr Dr Marie Strong, Wells DivisionBarshams & Houghton St Giles, Binham with Cockthorpe, Blakeney, Brinton with Sharrington, Field Dalling & Saxlingham, Glandford with Letheringsett, Great Snoring, Great & Little Walsingham, Hindringham, Holkham, Langham, Morston, Sculthorpe, Stiffkey, Stody with Hunworth, Thornage & Little Thornage, Warham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Wighton, Wiveton.

REPORT ON HOLT TOWN COUNCIL MEETING 9th JulyHolt Town Council met on 9th July 2018 for its monthly meeting. Many requests for grants had been received and after much debate it was agreed to award the following grants to good causes in Holt: Holt 1960s Club £350.00Holt Dementia Group £300.00Holt Christmas Lights £600.00Holt Community Café £600.00Holt Friday Club £350.00Holt Playing Fields Association £1000.00The Owl Playgroup £100.00Royal British Legion, Holt branch £100.00The Town Council reported that it had been running the Tourist Information Centre for three weeks. It has been extremely busy and we have been concentrating on giving information on the Holt area as well as covering North Norfolk. It appears the steam train brings a lot of people to Holt and the volunteers and staff are handing Holt Owl Trail leaflets to visitors every day. The most questions are about public transport buses. All the people manning the TIC are learning about bus routes and timetables and thinking about them in their sleep I would think! Thanks, must go to our friendly group of volunteers who turn up when promised, always with a smile and are great ambassadors for Holt. Thank you. If you think this may be something you would like to do then give the Clerk a ring on 01263 712149, we would be delighted to meet you and whatever time you can offer long or short we would be grateful. We have heard that our local Policeman Graham Gower-Smith is up for an award called a Nosca. We are delighted for him and we all know how committed he is to Holt and what good work he does for us. We are encouraging everyone to vote for him and, just in case no one has seen it, here is the link http://www.noscas.co.uk/category-14/

This would be a great accolade for Graham to win and well deserved. We had a presentation from the Holt Community Café and an update on the work they are doing in Holt. This is a fantastic initiative and appears very popular. It is amazing how many groups we have operating in Holt to make life better for everyone, Holt Community Café, 1960’s club, Holt Friday club to name just a few. If anyone would like to know more about any of these services then give the Town Council a ring or an email and we can put you in touch with the right people. There is help there, sometimes you just need to ask. Concerns from a resident were raised about the scaffolding outside the old Holt Carpet shop, this looks a mess but it is also an obstruction on the footpath. The Clerk informed the meeting that both NCC and NNDC had been informed about this and we will continue to make efforts to get it removed and looking better. Cllr Wright informed the meeting that all councillors are fully informed and up to date on Nelson House and the potential of Nat West and confirmed that the Council still support the move to Nelson House. The next Town Council meeting will be on 13th August 2018, at 7.00pm, we look forward to seeing you there. Finally, someone sent me this link that appeared in the Daily Telegraph last week, good news! https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/united-kingdom/articles/great-british-getaways-holt/

COMMUNITY GROUP NOTICESWe have tidied up the Town Council notice board on Fish Hill. Some notices were out of date and some were very jaded so we are undertaking a refurb! If you want to advertise your community group then please send me an A4 laminted poster and we will put it on the right hand side of the notice board.

PLAN REVIEWDear Caroline,The County Council have just published a Consultation Document which concludes that sand and gravel extraction are ‘considered suitable’ in a field 26 metres away from Holt on the Norwich Road.Planning Officers state that, “82 sensitive receptors” (aprox 250 people) live within 250 metres of the site, and an undisclosed number within 100 metres. To ‘mitigate’ the disturbances, Planning Officers recommended that large bunds (ugly earthworks) be built alongside the road and all the other boundaries. What visual impact will this have on the landscape to one of the major routes into the Town? The Quarry is planned to start operations in 2030, but it could be brought forward if an older quarry is worked out before then! You have until 13th August to make your views known to the County Council.Yours sincerely,Richard Carter

THOSE MONSTER SILOS

Dear Caroline, Thanks to readers, there are already over a hundred objections to the idea of building four hideous and noisy silos on the edge of Holt Country Park. We hope people will continue to make their views felt to NNDC. The planning ref is PF/18/0423. This will be a long campaign so Friends of Holt Country Park and Lowes now has a Facebook page where everyone can share their views and post their photographs of this lovely spot.Yours sincerely,Paula D’Attoma

OPPOSING THE MARCH OF THE GIANT SILOS!

Dear Caroline,Thanks to everyone who has already sent in objections to this ill-thought through plan!So many people are horrified by the idea of four monstrous, noisy silos being erected on the edge of Holt Country Park, right next to the lovely bridlepath leading to the Lowes. Already there are 100 objections on NNDC website! Let’s see a hundred more! Please let your voice be heard! Once they damage this lovely place, it will be lost forever. Visit the NNDC planning website,

search for PF/18/0423 and lodge your objection. The more detailed it is, the more weight it will carry. There are lots of objections on the site to help you shape your own. Alternatively, you can send in your objection by post to, Planning Dept., NNDC, Holt Road, CROMER NR27 5EN. Ref PF/18/0423. The Country Park is a priceless, tranquil area, famous for its birdsong and natural beauty. It draws visitors to the area who pump lots of money into the local economy, creating jobs in shops, restaurants and services. The narrow interests of one noisy firm should not trump those of the Holt community as a whole. Yours sincerely,Jeff Wood, on behalf of the Friends of Holt Country Park

HOLT PEOPLE’S FORUM

Dear Caroline, I hope I am not the only one to be totally perplexed by the article regarding the Holt People’s Forum in your last issue. In the article it states that the Town is being held back by a number of issues and that these are well known to businesses and residents alike but are not insurmountable. Am I the only one who does not know what these issues are? What a shame the authors of the article did not give us further details and let us know.It further states that, “You may be asking ‘why a Holt People’s Forum?’ There is of course the Town Council who represent all of us and the businesses are represented via the Chamber of Commerce but we, the residents, don’t have a body that speaks for us.” If, as stated, the Town Council represents all of us, surely that covers the residents? After all, it was the residents who voted the members on to the Town Council. Personally, I think there is no need for a Holt People’s Forum as, if one was formed, it could cause confusion to those at North Norfolk District Council, who are allocating the funds, and would certainly look as if it was trying to undermine the Town Council. Why, oh why, can’t people work together for the benefit of the town?Yours sincerely,J Bishop

VOLUNTEER’S LETTERDear Caroline,I have recently started as a volunteer with the Holt Tourist Information Centre (TIC) and would like your readers to know what a super job it is for anyone who enjoys meeting and

helping members of the public. We get all kinds of visitors, from all sorts of places, and the enquiries can be serious, funny and challenging too. As I’ve only recently moved to Holt my knowledge is a little limited, but it doesn’t matter in the slightest as my enthusiasm is huge.I have plenty of information to draw from, including printed booklets, searching on the internet and, of course, my colleagues, and I’m learning new things all the time. How lucky we are to live in such an interesting area, with so many things to see and do!More volunteers are needed now, as we prepare for our move to new premises in Nelson House. Half days and full days are possible (we currently open Monday to Friday, 10.00am - 3.00pm) and I would thoroughly recommend it as a positive and fun way to learn more about Holt and north Norfolk and meet some lovely people. To find out more, please contact Elaine Oliver, Town Clerk, at Holt Town Council, Tel: 01263 712149, or email [email protected] sincerely,Josie Page

VANDALSDear Caroline,I must reply to the piece in The Chronicle (Issue 405), VANDALS, (Scrap Timber at Barclays Bank, Holt).Surly Mr Lewis is not referring to the two mobile beds for homeless people? What a wonderful idea, they just need a mattress and curtains to keep the draft out, and a means to remove the chain, so they can be moved into a quiet space for a good night’s sleep.Ideal for those who have had one too many to drive or are looking for a cheap bed for the night. What are they REALLY FOR? And when will they BE USED?Yours sincerely,C J VincentPS. I cannot believe they have not been dismantled and taken away. Where are the carnival pranksters of yesteryear?

FAIRTRADE AT THE FLOWER FESTIVAL

Dear Caroline,We were very pleased to have the Fairtrade Stall at the Flower Festival at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, Sheringham again. We met and chatted to many visitors and sold a variety of goods, meaning that the farmers and craft workers, in the developing world,

will get a fair price for their products. Also we are sending £53.00 to the Fairtrade Charity Traidcraft Exchange, helping marginalised people in the developing world to improve their livelihood by perhaps changing their main crop from rice to tea.Yours sincerely,Brenda Smith(Fairtrade for Sheringham Group)

ACCENT AND ATTRIBUTES

Dear Caroline,About twenty years ago family researches took me to the records of Edgefield where I understood that my forebear Susannah Wiley was bom in the late 18th century. The nearest I got to her surname was Wild (I thought) but, scrutinising it more closely, I realised that it wasn’t a ‘d’ on the end of the name, but an ‘a’ giving the surname as Wila. The Norfolk accent taken down phonetically and frozen in time for a couple of centuries!Wiley was spelt correctly in the second name of Susannah’s son William Wiley Shepheard born Edgefield in 1819 and through whom I am descended. He was to become the bailiff for the Shepheard estates at Erpingham when Dr Philip Candler Shepheard (with whom he was distantly related) held them.William Wiley Shepheard had two great attributes so old anecdotes tell us. He supposedly could count sheep through a gate quicker than anyone in Norfolk, and brewed the best ale in the county! Let me quickly say

that the ale wasn’t for his own consumption, but was a necessity for labourers at harvest time when the reapers worked long arduous hours, often in the hot sun, and needed copious draughts of nutritious fluids to sustain their exertions. My father got this information from his grandfather, John Shepheard, who was William Wiley S’s younger son. After regaling anyone with the stories of the sheep counting and that wonderful ale, Dad could never resist saying: “And with attributes like that he could never have suffered with insomnia!”Yours sincerely,Richard Shepheard

ANOTHER VISIT FROM THE FALCON

Dear Caroline,Wow. When will we cease to be amazed by the brilliance of these young musicians who give us such wonderful concerts! Fenella Humphries and Daniel Grimwood, violinist and pianist respectively were absolute masters of their instruments.Fenella gave us performances of a Beethoven sonata, a Faure sonata and an unaccompanied work by Biber, who I must admit that I had never heard of. She played on a beautiful violin built by Guarneri in Venice in the 17th century (I believe) and used a bow made by an English bow maker, James Tubbs, a master bow maker. I can’t vouch for the value of the violin but the bow is probably worth 2 or

3 thousand pounds. I sold a Tubbs bow 20 years ago for £2,000! She did full justice to her beautiful instrument playing with verve and sensitivity.Daniel showed off the

new Church piano to its best. We were able to sit back and really appreciate the excellence of his playing. He also played works for solo piano. Their playing of the sonatas sounded as if they played together every day but I believe they haven’t worked together for some time. Good luck to you both for your futures.Yours sincerely,Theo Crowder

THANK YOUDear Caroline,We would like to thank everyone who supported us, who helped and gave prizes and donations when we had the Garden Open Weekend on 16th and 17th June at Kinsfield, Edgefield. We are very pleased to tell you we made £2,365.00 for the Oncology Department at the NNUH. Bebe’s wish was for it to be shared between the Radiotherapy Department and the Chemotherapy Department.Thank you again.Yours sincerely,Bebe Mason and Joyce Kinsley

THANK YOUDear Caroline,I would like to thank all neighbours, friends and family for the many cards, flowers and messages received on the sudden passing of my husband Dennis on 12th May.Your knidness and care has helped so much.Sincere thanks to everyone at Holt Medical Practice for the wonderful care Dennis received and Helen at Lloyd Durham for her kindness in making a very difficult time easier for us all.Generous donations of £485.00 have been forwarded to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.Yours sincerely,Jill Woodruffe

HOLT PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITSHolt Primary School would like to say a huge thank you to Budgens and Byfords for opening up their doors to some of their infant children.Alexa and the rest of the helpful staff at Budgens created a trail for the children to follow, encouraging them to find interesting local produce and discover where it was grown. They even gave the children some free fruit to take away.

Richard, Mark and Rosie from Byfords welcomed 50 children into their store to show off their cooking skills and give the children a behind the scenes glimpse into some of the foods they sell. A

delicious cookie fresh from the oven was gratefully received by all the children (and the staff!). It is a joy to see local businesses being so welcoming and friendly to the children and they should be proud of the way in which they inspired them to shop and eat locally.Thank you Budgens and Byfords!

Dear Friends, Increasingly, society is becoming more secular and many are turning away from the Christian faith which the Church has received and taught. Yet, I’m not sure people are any less spiritual. It seems people look to find spiritual fulfilment in other ways; searching for meaning, purpose, fulfilment and experiences in things other than God. One cannot help feel that after England’s recent success in getting into the semi-finals of the World Cup, football has become the established religion of the nation! Sitting in a beach bar on the Costa Brava watching the final of the world cup surrounded by a majority of French supporters, which was a first for me, I tried to understand the place this supposedly beautiful game has in people’s lives. But just as so many don’t do church, I have to admit that I don’t really do football. No offence to England or Norwich City supporters intended! Just as the World Cup has raised the profile of football and no doubt won some new converts or else seen the return of the lapsed, the Church is always engaged in a mission to raise the profile of the Christian faith. There is evidence to suggest that many are discovering faith for the first time and others are returning to the faith they once had. Cathedral Churches are experiencing a rise in the number of people in their congregations and new churches are being planted in our towns and cities. The Church of England is spending millions of pounds on new initiatives to proclaim the Gospel and bear witness to our faith in Christ Jesus. Yet, as well as being a traditionalist I am somewhat of a realist and believe it will take more than money and new initiatives to win new converts and welcome back the lapsed. The Church has a responsibility to teach the Christian faith, to offer beautiful worship that enables people to meet Christ in Word and Sacrament and to nurture them as his disciples in order that together we may live and work to the praise and glory of God. It is a responsibility that I like to think we take seriously in the parish and over this summer we continue to reach out to families and share with them in word and deed something of the Christian faith. The church is here to help parents and god parents of baptised children teach their children something about the faith into which they were admitted at baptism. But not just the baptised, Jesus told his disciples to let all the children come to him and not to prevent or hinder them from doing so. That is why children aged 6-12 years old are invited to join us for a 3 day holiday club during August at Holt Playing Field, Woodfield Road. In an atmosphere of fun and friendship children are invited to come along and get involved and learn more about the values of the Christian faith which has shaped our nation even more than football and which has influenced lives to achieve greater things than scoring a goal!

Every blessing,

Fr. Howard

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGAfternoon Delight!

It’s the simple things in life that you enjoy the best and this is certainly one very simple cake to make! Swiss Roll has been adorning tea plates for years, light, fluffy, unashamedly sweet and delicious in all its incarnations. This one borrows from the recent Royal Wedding in terms of flavour inspiration, making the most of recently made elderflower cordial and the always delightful lemon curd.If you have time, make your own curd, which is infinitely more fresh and delicious than bought ones, but for simplicity, I have used a bought one this time, there are some good ones out there.Full of summery flavours, this would also benefit from being served alongside fragrant strawberries. For a delicious, afternoon tea time treat, its hard to beat this super quick, light and scrumptious cake. You may want to run up two, as they disappear very quickly!Elderflower and Lemon Roll4 oz caster sugar2 tblsp elderflower cordial4 large eggs - good quality eggs make all the difference to this recipe3 oz self-raising flourLemon curd - use a good one!To serve:Small pot double creamTblsp elderflower cordialPut sugar, eggs and cordial in a bowl and whip until pale and slightly thickened. Sift flour into the bowl and fold in well. Grease and line a swiss roll tin with baking paper and pour in the mixture, levelling out with the back of a spoon. Put into an oven on 180° for approx. 12 mins, until just cooked - do not overcook! Place some baking paper onto your work surface, just a bit larger than the swiss roll tin, and scatter over some caster sugar. Turn the roll out onto the paper and very carefully peel off the lining paper. Set aside to cool slightly, whilst you warm up about 3 tblsp lemon curd in the microwave for about 20 seconds, being careful not to overheat. Carefully smooth the warmed lemon curd all over the sponge evenly and then take hold of the baking paper underneath and roll the cake up, tucking in the first bit and using the paper to help you to roll it, leaving the join underneath. Transfer to a cake plate to cool, scattering a bit more caster sugar over it. Whip the cream and cordial together until thick and serve with the cake. Carolyn Burn

ST ANDREWS METHODIST CHURCH SHERINGHAM FLOWER FESTIVAL

A well earned rest is being taken by all involved in organising and helping to stage the ‘Golden Moments’ special 50th anniversary flower festival held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church Sheringham from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th July. A huge thank you to all involved and to all those who visited. This special festival event was an enormous success with over 3,000 visitors ranging from 5 weeks to over 100 years old, admiring the exceptional talent of the flower arrangers, who interpreted 24 Golden moment events over the past 50 years, with stunning arrangements overflowing with colour creativity and beauty, all enhanced by organists providing background music. Pictured are two of the arrangements, titled ‘Queen’s Golden Jubilee’

(left) and ‘Rescue by Lifeboat’ (above). The Cafeteria and stalls were kept busy throughout the festival too, as folk enjoyed a chat and refreshments and a browse around the various stalls. The event raised a net total of £10,996.10 and from this a donation of £1,100 was given to Sheringham R.N.L.I, who were the designated charity for the 2018 festival.Photographs of each arrangement will be available to view shortly on our church website www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk.

FUNNY/STRANGE FACTS! (Believe it or not!)The San Francisco Cable cars are the only mobile National Monuments in the USA.Half of all Americans live within 50 miles of their birthplace. Honey is the only food that doesn’t spoil.Coca-Cola would be green if coloring wasn’t added to it.A sneeze travels about 100 miles per hour.If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes. In pubs ale was ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them ‘Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down’. It’s where we get the phrase ‘mind your P’s and Q’s’ from.

HOLT & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB

The Flower Club welcomed international demonstrator and television personality, Jonathan Moseley in June and we were not disappointed as he received a standing ovation for his superb demonstration of floral art. A workshop at Cley Village Hall followed the next day with members enjoying a relaxing day whilst receiving expert tuition and a chance to create two innovative designs. Club members will be off on a coach trip to the RHS garden at Hyde Hall in August with another chance to see Jonathan as he

will be there for the RHS Flower Show with his British Flower Bus.Our next club meeting is on 6th August when Crystal Dyball will be taking us Up The Garden Path. Crystal is always popular and a great favourite with our members. We welcome visitors for just

£5.00 admission, 7.00pm for 7.30pm and meet on the first Monday of the month. To see details of our programme for the rest of the year please visit our website www.holtflowerclub.co.uk. You can find us on Facebook at Holt & District Flower Club or telephone Amanda Seales 01263 861725.

THE GRAHAM ALLEN AWARDSHOWCASING BUILDING EXCELLENCENominate your favourite design by entering it into the North Norfolk District Council awards

Entrants to the building excellence competition run by North Norfolk District Council, the Graham Allen Award, have until the end of this month to put in their nominations. The Graham Allen Award has for the last 36 years celebrated best practice in design and conservation in the district. North Norfolk has a history of producing high quality innovative developments and sensitive renovation projects, which complement the district’s unique environment.Councillor Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “This is a great opportunity to seek recognition for projects which have made a standout contribution to the built environment, local communities and heritage. Whether it is new build, extension, restoration or refurbishment, the Graham Allen Award recognises excellence in all design projects.“The judging panel always appreciates having a wide range of entries to choose from and is grateful to all those people who take the time and trouble to enter.”Councillor Vivienne Uprichard, Shadow Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “It’s always a joy to spend a day with the judging panel for the annual Graham Allen Awards. “Looking at the nominated constructions for the year and admiring the style and innovation in the beautiful North Norfolk area is a real pleasure.”Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the award scheme has recognised a diverse selection of North Norfolk’s finest architecture. The award, in the form of a bronze plaque, is presented to the scheme considered to have made the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district.Schemes considered worthy of commendation are also acknowledged by the presentation of certificates.Past winners have included the extension to Binham Priory, the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms in Thorpe Market, Hootz House at Pensthorpe Natural Park and last year’s winner, Wild Acres, on Holt Road, Heydon. (pictured)The Wild Acres project involved the demolition of a bungalow and the clever resiting and building of a contemporary four bedroom house. It was praised by judges for its intelligent reaction to site context, topography and landscape setting; visual interest portrayed by the curved

form; low lying position and shallow pitch ensuring a discreet presence; and sustainable technology including ground source heating. The project was described as a “stunning piece of contemporary design”.The panel of judges includes members of the Development Control Committee, the Cabinet Member for Planning and Mr Edward Allen, who represents the Allen family. The deadline for submissions is 31st July, with the judging site visits on 17th August. The People’s Choice Award voting takes place at North Norfolk District Council’s Greenbuild event over the weekend of 8th and 9th September. The award ceremony and presentation will be held on 4th October. If you are nominating a scheme please ensure you have the permission of the owner. To find out more about the scheme and to nominate please go online here:https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/gaa

WEYBOURNE WI GET CRAFTY WITH PAVERPOL

Members of Weybourne WI spent a fascinating afternoon when Amanda Seales (pictured) gave a demonstration on the art of making models using Paverpol. She also displayed several finished examples of her work.Paverpol is a non-toxic liquid resin and Amanda first read about using it for modelling in a flower arranging magazine. She later attended a workshop to learn the craft. She now runs workshops herself.Amanda showed us how she begins a model by twisting garden wire to form the frame of a person, called an ‘armature’. This is then wrapped in crumpled foil, before being covered in scraps of fabric, which have been soaked in the resin. Paverpol can be purchased on line in several different colours and also in a clear form. Amanda described how she uses a variety of items from around the house for her modelling, including scraps from old T-shirts and pieces of lace. She also uses shredded dishcloths to make ‘hair’.When first constructed, models remain soft and pliable for about 24 hours, but once set hard they will last for years. They can even be kept outdoors, although Amanda recommended they should be painted with varnish first.Members asked questions following the demonstration and several expressed an interest in attending a workshop. The vote of thanks was given by Carol Jones. The afternoon concluded with refreshments, including a selection of delicious cakes made by Heather Dakin, to celebrate her recent birthday.

IMPRESSIONIST AND CHART-TOPPING PIANIST, ALISTAIR MCGOWAN, BRINGS TWO WORLDS TOGETHER IN A BRAND-NEW, NATIONWIDE TOUR MIXING HIS FAVOURITE CLASSICAL

PIANO PIECES WITH HIS FAMOUS VOICESHot on the heels of both his Classical Chart-topping debut album, Alistair McGowan: The Piano Album and the critically-acclaimed new Sky One impressions show, The Week That Wasn’t (“Very, very, very funny” Chris Evans, BBC Radio 2), the multi-award-winning impressionist will be mixing (surely for the first-time) classical piano music and celebrity voices in his nationwide tour Introductions to Classical Piano. Probably best known for his BAFTA-winning comedy show, The Big Impression, the master mimic takes to the stage hoping to bring to life his love for classical piano, alongside his hugely- popular impressions. Having not played piano since he was a young boy, Alistair reignited his passion for the instrument in his late 40s in order to learn to play some of his favourite music, which led to the recording of his classical piano album only three years after returning to the instrument. Alistair McGowan said: “This tour is a whole new way of presenting classical piano music. Possibly, the first classical piano recital to intersperse romantic music with a little comedy. I’d be delighted if, as well as fans of classical music, we were able to encourage people who may not know much about classical piano to come and enjoy some of the incredible music written (and still being written) for the piano. As well as having the chance to share my own versions of the stories of composers and the extraordinary music they write, I simply can’t have a room full of people and not have some fun with my current favourite impressions too. It should be the first show in which you can hear Harry Kane alongside the music of George Gershwin, Jacob Rees Mogg between pieces by Edvard Grieg. As well as being light-hearted, I hope these shows introduce people to some wonderfully romantic music and demonstrate to anyone who harbours a secret ambition to take up music, that it really is never too late!”This summer join one man, a piano and some of the most famous voices in the world for a night of inspiring, short classical piano works and some big laughs. Alistair McGowen will be at the Auden Theatre, Holt, on Saturday 18th August. For more information or to book tickets phone 01263 713444 or visit www.audentheatre.co.uk

HOLT AND DISTRICTPROBUS CLUB

Meeting July 2018We are told that you can see the Great Wall of China from Space, but Catherine Hull (pictured) saw it close up when she went to walk a length of the Wall. After the Feathers had dished up a delicious meal (including poached salmon with hollandaise sauce) Catherine explained her deeply felt personal reasons for supporting the Cancer Charity Clic Sargent. Catherine persuaded friends and acquaintances to sponsor her walk in aid of the charity.Catherine went on to tell members of Holt and District Probus Club about some of her experiences. There were places where they had to climb down the face of the Wall to avoid forbidden stretches and then had to climb up again when the closed area had been bypassed. Although the impression often given by photographs is that the Wall is almost like a level highway, this is far from the case and in places it is more like rock climbing. The group was led by a Chinese guide whose real name was a mystery to them but answered, luckily, to ‘Dave’. Catherine told us of the delights of ‘real’ Chinese food and the friendly and courteous nature of the people she met. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers Hotel in Holt.Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit, visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

FIRST RESPONDER COVER FOR CHILDREN REINSTATED

Following a meeting held by local MP Norman Lamb with top NHS England officials, the East of England Ambulance Service has agreed to reinstate paediatric cover for under-eights by Volunteer Ambulance First Responders, subject to governance sign-off.The cover for children between the ages of two and eight was withdrawn in October 2017 following a widely-disputed governance report. Tim Thirst, Chairman of the Association of Ambulance First Responders in England and Coordinator of a First Responder group in North Norfolk, reached out to his local MP Norman Lamb to secure a meeting with NHS about the change in policy.Following correspondence and a meeting with NHS England facilitated by Mr Lamb, EEAST’s new Medical Director has agreed to reintroduce paediatric cover, so that First Responders can once again aid children under eight as well as older children and adults in medical emergencies. Mr Lamb said: “This is brilliant news. Volunteer Ambulance First Responders work really hard to ensure people in their local communities receive essential medical attention as soon as possible. Ending cover for children under eight was a potentially fatal policy, I find it absurd that it was implemented without any discussion. The EEAS was the only Trust in the country to do this. The sooner volunteers are once again able to respond to those cases, the better.”Tim Thirst, Chairman of the Association of Ambulance First Responders in England and a Coordinator of a First Responder group in North Norfolk said: “There was no consultation on the withdrawal and no warning. What made it worse was that it was eventually uncovered that there was no reason to make that decision in the first place. It was implied that this decision would affect First Responders throughout the country, which was very worrying for them as well. This turned out not to be the case as no other Ambulance Trusts had been consulted nationally on the issue in the first place.”

GOLFINGA golfer was getting ready to tee off on the first hole when a second golfer approached and asked if he could join him. The first said that he usually played alone, but agreed to the twosome. They were even after the first two holes. The second man said, “We’re about evenly matched, how about playing for a fiver a hole?”The first chap said that he wasn’t much for betting, but agreed to the terms. The second man won the remaining sixteen holes with ease. As they were walking off number eighteen, the second man was busy counting his £80.00. He then confessed that he was the pro at the neighbouring course and liked to pick on suckers. The first fellow then revealed that he was the Parish Priest. The pro was flustered and apologetic, offering to return the money. The Priest said, “You won fair and square and I was foolish to bet with you. You keep your winnings.”The pro said, “Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?”The Priest said, “Well, you could come to Mass on Sunday and make a donation of £80 ...... and, if you want to, bring your Mother and Father along; I’ll marry them.”

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILJUST ANOTHER ONE

Jesus is said to be the one, who has the key of David, it is written: “The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one shall shut, who shuts and no one opens.” (Revelation 3:7). These words have been taken from (Isaiah 22:22) and refer to Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, it is written there: “And 1 will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut and he shall shut, and none shall open.” Like the story of David, and of Eliakim Jesus was just another one, another invented Christ, a fraud. The bible is a book divided against itself; the stories in it simply do not stack up; and yet here in 2018 we have people preaching these stories as if they were true. It is a very sad state of affairs. The Christian Churches should come clean, they should tell the truth or, do they want to deceive forever. For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL, available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

‘HOLT RIDGE’ AT POTTY FESTIVALLocal Morris side ‘Holt Ridge’ joined many other Morris dancers from around the country to attend the 25th Annual Potty Festival held in Sheringham on 7th and 8th July. After taking part in the parade through the town, members of Holt Ridge were watched by crowds as they joined other dancers in the High Street, in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most Morris dancers all dancing at the same time. The previous record stood at 144, but on this occasion 369 dancers took part and danced ‘Tinner’s Rabbit’ for six and a half minutes, which set a new record.Following this achievement, dancing took place at various locations throughout the town and Holt Ridge were grateful for two seafront spots, which provided a cooling breeze and some respite from the soaring temperature! The weekend concluded with further dancing in the town on Sunday morning.Holt Ridge will be dancing at a variety of events during the summer months. If you are interested in learning to Morris dance, please contact Brian Antuar on 01263 715762 for further information or find us on Facebook - Holt Ridge Morris.

SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO AND JULIET

performed by the Handlebards On Thursday 12th July, FALCON and the Sheringham Little Theatre organised a very successful ‘Open-Air Shakespeare Event’.Romeo and Juliet was performed by The Handlebards, a troupe of four cycling actors, for five local Primary Schools at the Gresham’s Theatre in the Woods. This lovely setting proved to be a wonderful backdrop for the performance and was a memorable experience for the young audience. Two hundred children took part from Primary schools in Langham, Holt, Sheringham, Gresham Village and Roughton. As Simon Walters, Head Teacher, from Holt Community Primary School, said, “We really enjoyed the performance today. I thought it

was pitched at exactly the right level for the children and it certainly made me laugh.” The event had been initiated and part-funded by FALCON, with generous support in kind from Sheringham Little Theatre and Gresham’s School with a contribution from participating schools.

Norman Lamb is demanding an end to a loophole which allows homeowners to avoid paying tax on second homes, after new figures revealed that it is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering £1.8 million this year alone. In England, any property that is ‘available to let’ for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than £12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property.North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-home holiday lets are claiming 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19, at a cost of £1,873,998. The figures were disclosed following a freedom of information request from Norman Lamb MP. While many of these properties will be genuine holiday homes, the ease of registering a property as a holiday home and claiming full

business rate relief leaves the system open to abuse by second-home owners who are seeking to avoid paying council tax. Commenting on the figures, Norman Lamb MP said: “It is completely unreasonable that hard-pressed residents in North Norfolk are paying higher council tax bills to fund vital local services, while some owners of second homes that are registered as holiday lets are getting away with paying no tax at all on that property. This loophole is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering sum of money which could be spent on social care, children’s services or other essential support. It is far too easy for second-home owners to bend the rules under the current system. This is particularly galling in a low-wage economy like North Norfolk, where it is critically important that everyone is making a fair contribution. We cannot afford a system that is open to abuse in this way, which is why these rules need reform as a matter of urgency.”

M&GNJR SOCIETY ACQUIRES A ‘NEW’ LOCOMOTIVEThe Society is delighted to announce the acquisition of a sixth locomotive to join its stable of four steam locos and one mainline diesel, in the form of Class 08 shunter D3935. The handover of the locomotive took place on Thursday 12th July (photograph below)when the loco took over pilot duties at Sheringham station from Class 11 12131. D3935 was quickly into action during the Railway’s highly successful annual Beer Festival, which saw restricted use of platform 2 by service trains. The loco brought trains into platform 1 once the train loco was released outside the station by Sheringham West signalbox. Bringing D3935 back to life has been a long term project of over 20 years undertaken by previous owner, Phil Ward, who has lovingly returned the loco to ‘as new’ condition. Phil knew the 08 well from his time at Colchester depot. The shunter was built at Horwich in 1960-61 and first allocated North of the border to Kittybrewster (61A) in April 1961. It moved to Aberdeen (Ferryhill) (61B) in 1967 and to Thornaby in 1971, before heading to South East to Colchester in June 1972, breaking its journey briefly at Stratford. D3935 remained a Colchester loco for the remainder of its BR service. It became 08767 in February 1974 as part of BR’s TOPS renumbering scheme. It was withdrawn from service in January 1994 after almost 33 years in BR service and stored at Ipswich wagon works. It was then acquired by the North Norfolk Railway, where it worked during the 1990s before experiencing major mechanical problems. Phil Ward then bought the loco and began the project which has resulted today in such an impressive piece of work.Neil Sharpe, Society Chairman, who drove the loco from the NNR’s Weybourne depot to Sheringham on Thursday to enter service, informed members of the purchase at the Society’s AGM held in Sheringham two days later on 14th July. “D3935 is in superb condition following its long restoration,” he said, “so the Society is acquiring an almost new locomotive which will be a useful working asset to the NNR. The Trustees were keen to add a locomotive with such strong links to East Anglia to our stable as it fits the objects of the Society so well.”He told members that the purchase was made possible because of the successful year which the Society had had financially, not only through member support and income from our locomotives, but the result of a large legacy.” Trustees are also delighted that the money invested in purchasing D3935 is to be used to finance a further restoration project.“This is recycling at its best!”

Solution to No. 240: 1.Nxf4, threat 2.Rxf3; 1... Ne5 2.Ng2(not 2. Nd5 as black Rd8 now controls that square); 1...Ng3 2.Nd5 (here not 2.Ng2 as black Pf3 has been unpinned). By-play 1...Bh5 2.Qe4. The try 1.Rxf4?, same threat 2.hRxf3 with this time1... Ne5 2.Re4 and 1... Ng3 2.fRxf3 (completing the Rice theme), is defeated by the clever 1... Rh8! pinning the threat R. Lovely dual avoidance in each phase.No. 241 also features tries, this time by one white unit which is an almost unmitigated nuisance, frustrating various mates. Game-players might actually feel at home with this one as White has to take drastic action in view of the unprovided black checks 1... Qb5+ and1... Qc4+. Difficulty 4, and this time please send all the thematic tries and their refutations. Solutions and comments to me at 16 Lime Grove, Sheringham NR26 8NX or e-mail to [email protected].

COME AND TEE OFF IN CROMER FOR EACH

The Rotary Club of Holt and District is inviting golfers to its 12th annual golf day in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), to be held in Cromer for the first time. The event has raised many thousands of pounds and will this year take place on Friday, 10th August at the Royal Cromer Golf Club. Entry is £50.00 per person (or £25.00 for Royal Cromer Golf Club members) and includes 18 holes of golf on what is one of the country’s finest cliff-top courses, plus a meal.Rotarian James Coker said: “We’re delighted to yet again be supporting EACH this year. It’s a terrific day and we hope to raise lots of money for the charity as the support they provide for families is so vitally important. There are a number of fantastic prizes to be won, including a Ford car for anyone who gets a hole-in-one on the 9th.”

All money raised will help provide care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across the region and support for their families. For both those accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. To book a team please contact James Coker at [email protected], on 01263 822636 or on07941 950927.

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUBOn 4th July, the Club had its summer outing to Bressingham Gardens, near Diss.Founder Alan Bloom (1906-2005) began his garden in front of Bressingham Hall in 1953, using a new concept of island beds to show off perennial plants from his nursery. After returning from the U.S.A. in the sixties, he planted Foggy Bottom Garden with conifers, heathers and shrubs. His son-in-law, Jamie Blake, who talked to our Club a short while ago, is curator of the Dell Garden, which links the other two gardens and also has islands of colourful perennials and specimen trees. The weather was perfect for the occasion. We had four hours to explore not only the gardens but also the museum (including a Dads’ Army exhibition) and Alan’s collection of steam locomotives and engines, including narrow gauge trains and gallopers offering rides. In contrast to my own wilting patch, the gardens were well irrigated and in top condition with stunning combinations of fiery Heleniums and Kniphofias and purple Erigerons, Asters and Tradescantias highlighting the beds. Bees and butterflies shared our enjoyment of the 8000 different plants.Among the many inspirational planting ideas, one that caught my eye was the use of two drooping conifers (Cedrus deodora glauca pendula I think) to clothe an archway into the Winter Garden (pictured).Huge thanks to Gill Clarke and Tricia Frost for arranging our trip.

FUNDING CONFIRMED FOR THIRD YEAR OF GROUND-BREAKING

SPORTS PROJECTCabinet hears that North Norfolk District Council

scheme is going from strength to strengthThe ground-breaking Sporting Centre of Excellence (SCOE) scheme run by North Norfolk District Council has been guaranteed funding for a third year. The unique and successful programme has already seen more than 150 young people attend coaching sessions during its first two years.SCOE was set up with the aim of providing young people with top-quality coaching in endurance running, cricket, netball and hockey, and at excellent facilities. These children might not otherwise have had access to such good coaching or facilities.Monday’s meeting of NNDC’s Cabinet heard that the first two years of the project had seen all the participants improve. All of North Norfolk’s secondary schools have been represented in the scheme, which uses the facilities at Gresham’s School, Holt. Sport England has hailed the project as being innovative and demonstrating best practice. Many of the young people, aged 11-14, have subsequently been selected to represent Norfolk in their chosen sports and some have competed at a national standard:• Ten athletes have been selected to represent Norfolk in cross-country, with one girl finishing third in the national cross-country championships, out of more than 400 competitors.• Three boys in the cricket programme have reached county standard and have been invited to the county squad and training sessions.• Most of the netball players have been invited to join high-standard netball teams.• One boy has been identified as being a naturally-gifted hockey goalkeeper. Specific goalkeeper coaching has been arranged for him and he has been invited to join a top Norfolk hockey club.Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Leisure, told the meeting: “It’s the only one in the country of its kind and I think it’s been a remarkable scheme over the two years that we’ve had so far.”Cllr John Lee, Leader of NNDC and of the Conservative Group, added: “I have enjoyed presenting certificates to runners, cricketers, netball players and hockey players over the past couple of months since I became Leader. The vast majority of these children wouldn’t otherwise have had the chance to use these facilities.”The project was originally launched by former gymnast and Commonwealth Games gold-medal winner Craig Heap. The Cabinet this week agreed to allocate funding of £20,000 towards the scheme’s third year. After the meeting, Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Lib Dem Group at NNDC, said: “I’m obviously delighted that the council has decided to continue to support this fantastic initiative, which helps so many of our young people to realise their sporting potential.”Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said: “It is perfect timing to secure funding for the sports stars and athletes of the future.”

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

My mum, whose name is Mary, is quite elderly and has a vivid imagination. So when she called me in the middle of the night to say she’d heard a voice speaking to her, I was sceptical.“Something’s wrong,” she said. “Every so often I can hear someone say, ‘Hello Valerie’.”I told her she must have been dreaming and to go back to sleep. But she called back a few minutes later, clearly worried.“The voice is still speaking to me,” she claimed. “It’s saying, ‘Hello Valerie’.”At this point my husband, who was quietly cursing at having been wakened, realised what it was, the automated voice in my mum’s smoke detector saying, ‘Low battery’.While having my eyebrows shaped by a young beautician, we got onto the subject of food. I told her all about my slow cooker, waxing lyrical about all the things it could do.Instead of looking impressed, she asked, “Did you know it was slow when you bought it?”My two grandsons came to stay one weekend and we walked into town, did some shopping, had some lunch and then walked home again.I usually have 40 winks after lunch, so I fell asleep in my chair. Having never seen anyone sleeping at midday before, my grandson Lewis shook me gently and said in an extremely serious voice, “Granny, are you sleeping or are you dead?”

BUILDERS

FROM HOLT CONSULTING ROOMSDoes it really have to be perfect?

Perfection, like so many traits, can be an asset in some situations and a curse in others. It feels good to achieve valued goals and it seems reasonable to set high standards in order to do well. However, what happens if we try to achieve perfection in everything we do rather than allowing ourselves to apply lower standards when we tackle less important tasks? Well, sadly, the perfectionist standards can actually become a problem.People who experience the negative consequences of perfectionism, such as low mood, anxiety and exhaustion are typically mainly basing their view of themselves on how well they do at meeting the high standards they have set. They tend to ignore their achievements to date and focus on what they haven’t been able to achieve. They may procrastinate about starting things because they are fearful of not doing well enough. They might even spend so long trying to achieve perfection in all things that they miss out on more energising activities such as socialising, exercise or just having fun.So what to do about it if you recognise yourself? Often, when people think about giving up on being a perfectionist, they focus on the perceived benefits and feel reluctant to let go of it, but you don’t have to give up striving for standards. It would be more helpful if you could aim not to evaluate yourself only in terms of striving and achievement and to view yourself with compassion and understanding rather than self-criticism.Performance is actually best when there is neither too little nor too much stress. So it’s not the case that the harder you work the better you will do. Often people with perfectionism work too hard and too long without giving themselves a break because they fear not doing well enough. So savour a job well done by all means, but be kind and reasonable in your expectations of yourself. Then you will have space to enjoy the creativity and relaxation that comes with being able to tolerate and accept that no one is perfect and perfection is something that doesn’t exist.Annie Beresford, C.
