Affirming Principles

WE ARE A CARING, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY St. Matthew was an outcast in his time. We honor St. Matthew by welcoming the outcasts of our

time.

We believe in the value of every person, regardless of physical, economic, or social condition, and strive to be a community which serves the unique spiritual needs of all God’s children.

We respect and honor others who worship one God.

We acknowledge that God created all things and, as God’s stewards, we strive to care for all creation. CENTERED IN THE EUCHARIST The Eucharist, at the very core of our community, reveals the truth that we are one in Christ, and

strengthens and renews us for service.

All persons are welcome to worship with us, to share the Eucharist at God’s table, and to assist our efforts in the greater community to proclaim God’s word. GROUNDED IN THE GOSPEL Jesus preached a message of compassion, inclusion and love. So do we.

We are a community of compassion. Our bonds are based on God’s overwhelming love, rather than narrow definitions of doctrine and behavior.

We accept people at all points in their spiritual journeys, and support each other as we question and grow in faith. SO THAT WE CAN REACH OUT AS CHRIST’S HANDS TO THE WORLD We care about and care for each other, whoever that “other” person may be, both within and beyond our community of faith.

We believe that there are unique needs of God’s people at every stage of their journeys, and we seek to provide programs and support to serve spiritual needs throughout life.

We reach out to address the world’s physical and spiritual needs, rather than waiting for the world to come to us.

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church 2019 Income Statement Budget vs. Actual

For fiscal year 2019, the budget was approved with a net income of $2. The actual was a net loss of $17,988. The shortfall is due to a shortfall in pledges. The 2019 budget was completed prior to the end of the 2019 Stewardship Campaign, and the total campaign, which was $629,000, fell well short of the budgeted amount of $680,420. Income

• Pledges and Loose Offerings – Pledges were $53,092 below budget, and loose offerings were $19,921 above budget, creating a shortfall of $32,171.

• Grant Income – A grant of $3000 was awarded for the Communities of Calling programs being offered every month. This was not budgeted for 2019.

• Fundraising – Fundraising included the rummage sale, as well as cash earned from Kroger cards and Amazon Smile sales. The annual total was $4,851, which was $6,149 lower than budget

• Rental Income – Overall rentals have increased, with many outside groups using Saints Hall, the fields, and various rooms throughout the building, resulting in $17,697 more than budget.

Expenses reflect all expenditures, including those spent out of restricted and endowed funds. Those expenses are included in the departments that are affected, and then reimbursed through the line “Expenses Released from Restricted Funds”.

• Outreach – Expenses of $43,010 were $2,010 below budget due to the timing of payments to St. Matthews Area Ministries.

• Salaries and Benefits – Benefits in 2019 were $8,585 lower than budget due mostly to unused pension benefits.

• Operating Expenses o Building Maintenance – The actual of $52,670 was $3,366 above budget, due to higher than

anticipated HVAC equipment expenses. o Janitorial – Expenses were $3,099 lower than budget due primarily to timing of carpet cleaning.

This expense will be paid in 2020. o Grounds – Expenses were $4,921 above budget due to timing of leaf collection. This expense was

incurred in 2018 but was paid in 2019. o Computer Service – Expenses were $2,057 lower than budget due to fewer than anticipated service

calls. o Communications & Advertising – Expenses were $3,159 lower than budget, due mostly to fewer

quarterly newsletters. • Work Inside the Parish

o Music & Supplies – Expenses of $20,507 were $11,433 lower than budget due to a portion of the organ repair deemed unnecessary.

o Adult Education – Expenses were $4,402 lower than budget due to less than expected expenses connected to Dimensions of Faith speakers.

o Youth – Youth expenses were $3,596 better than budget due to the cancellation of the 2019 Mission Trip.

o Grant Expenses – Grant expenses of $3,946 represent the new Collegeville grant awarded. Although unbudgeted in 2019, they are fully released from restrictions and grant income.

Introduction A budget is a picture, an estimate of what our rector, finance committee and vestry expect to happen in 2020, both in terms of the income we receive and the expenses we incur. To some extent, budget development is guided by the previous year’s budget, but is adjusted based on actual income and the expense of the year just ending, as well as new expenditures that are planned. This narrative budget explains both where we expect to get our income in 2020, as well as the amounts we expect to receive; it also shows how we intend to spend that income. For 2020 we have created a budget where our revenue matches our expenses. We have anticipated income of $751,220 and projected expenses of $830,920; after expenses of $81,822 are released from restricted funds, our budget forecasts that we will have $2,122 in income left over at year’s end. A budget is a blueprint for us to follow. This budget aims to ensure that we have funds to adequately cover our expenses. Income Sources and Amounts Our 2020 budget is based on St. Matthew’s receiving $751,220 in income. The bulk of that income, $656,600 will come from intentions, formerly called pledges, made in our recent annual stewardship campaign. This is made up of intentions of $670,000 less an allowance of $13,400 for uncollected intentions. We have achieved 100.1% of that goal to date, and 99.4% of the Stewardship Campaign goal of $675,000. The total amount anticipated is budgeted to be lower than last year, to more accurately reflect true giving.

Sixty percent of all active households have given intentions for 2020. Of the households who returned an intention, 56% have increased their giving amount. “Plate” or “loose” offerings should bring in another $35,000. Overall rentals have increased, including two new office leases. Many outside groups continue using Saints Hall, the fields, and various rooms throughout the building; a total of $37,500 is budgeted.

Grant Income of $15,000 is budgeted for Kelly’s sabbatical. Grant income from Collegeville is not budgeted as we do not yet know the amount. Fundraising Income of $7,000 is budgeted to be raised, through a rummage sale, as well as donations from Kroger cards and Amazon Smile purchases. Expense Sources and Amounts

Work Outside the Parish Just as parishioners pledge money to St. Matthew’s, each year St. Matthew’s pledges money to the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky. The diocese expects each parish to give 13 percent of their previous year’s (2018) income as reported on their parochial report to the diocese. We have pledged to give $91,065 in 2020.

For 2020, $34,284 is budgeted for outreach expenses. This is our expected expenditure for outreach from all sources: parishioner pledges, endowment funds and special collections.

Salaries & Benefits For 2020, St. Matthew’s has budgeted $445,151 for staff salaries and benefits. Staff benefits include pensions, Social Security, health and life insurance for full-time employees, auto expenses and continuing education. In addition, $1,000 is budgeted annually for the future sabbatical expense. Operating Expenses

Operating expenses account for 25 percent of the 2020 budget. This category includes maintenance of our buildings and grounds and running the church office. We have budgeted $205,132 for these expenses. More than half of the expenditures in this category are for utilities and maintenance - $63,550 and $58,783, respectively. Property, casualty and liability insurance premiums account for another $30,297. The maintenance budget is $9,479 higher than the 2019 budget. This budget was calculated by looking at prior years’ actual as well as the average of the previous five years that was funded by the Endowment for major building repairs. In 2020, new expenses include an engineering study of the electrical layout of the building, roof inspections and paint for the upper level. Work Inside the Parish The final expense category is for the expenses for our parish programs. The 2020 budget anticipates $55,288 to be spent in this category. Expenses are budgeted for worship expenses such as prayer books and Eucharistic supplies; for musicians and receptions, coffee-hour coffee; for sending deputies to the Diocesan Convention; for adult education, confirmation preparation, our children’s program, youth program, Dimensions of Faith and books for our library. In addition, grant expense of $15,000 will be spent on our rector’s sabbatical.

Accounting for Restricted Funds Besides the Endowment, there are seven additional separate, small “pots of money” – restricted funds – a flower fund, a special flower and music fund, a Dimensions of Faith fund, and so on. Some are funds from grants, some are from offerings, and they are set aside for restricted purposes, according to the donor. These funds, totaling $81,822, will be “released” as appropriate from their special fund and used to fund the corresponding line item in this budget. Structuring our budget this way gives a clearer picture of what it costs to run the parish. We expect to fund 10% of the entire budget through the release of restricted funds.

Many churches have endowments. A church endowment is a fund of money set up with bequests in wills from parishioners who wanted to ensure support for their church in the future after they passed on. Typically, bequests contain instructions (which legally must be honored) for support of specific programs. Endowments are not set up to be used for ongoing operational expenses, but for one-time or special programs or uses. The vast majority of funds in endowments are reserved to earn income; only a small portion of endowment funds – typically five percent – is ever spent in one year. At the end of 2019, funds in the St. Matthew’s Endowment Fund totaled $1,111,942. Our endowment funds are reserved for:

• One-time capital expenses like a new heating and air-conditioning system • Our Dimensions of Faith speaker series • Seed money to try new programs that may (or may not) in future years become part of the regular

budget • Support for our outreach efforts

Anticipated expenditures from the endowment in 2020 include:

• Major building repairs of $25,950; this includes painting the upper level, the engineering study, repairs

for the flat roofs and unanticipated equipment failure • Outreach grant of $11,880 • Dimensions of Faith will bring in two speakers using $7,375

The Capital Campaign The 3-year capital campaign came to its funding conclusion on December 31, 2018. A total of $601,586 has been received for this campaign through December 31, 2019. This year, the outstanding loan and interest continued to be paid monthly ($9,316), which lowered the debt to $637,876.

Many people like to leave a gift to charity in their will. The Planned Giving Committee was established

in 2010 to encourage parishioners to include St. Matthew’s in their will or estate plans. In 2014, the Planned Giving Committee created a legacy society known as the Stewards of St. Matthew’s. The Stewards of St. Matthew's are listed below.

Individuals are part of the Stewards of St. Matthew’s when they share with the rector or a member of the Planned Giving Committee that they have included a gift to St. Matthew’s in their will or trust, or named St. Matthew’s to receive a future gift as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, tax-deferred retirement plan, charitable gift annuity, or other type of planned gift.

In April, we once again held a Sunday as "Legacy Sunday". The Planned Giving Committee hosted a breakfast and we gathered in the Memorial Garden before the 10:00 am service, parishioners were invited to remember how the tangible and intangible gifts from those who came before us have shaped St. Matthew's and continue to bless our community.

Intestacy In Kentucky

Intestacy is the state or condition of dying without having disposed of all or a part of one’s property by will or other arrangement. Intestacy only applies to those assets owned by a decedent who has no will, and which are not disposed of through contractual means, such as joint ownership with rights of survivorship, payable on death accounts or accounts or arrangements with named beneficiaries. It is possible to be intestate as to only part of one’s estate. An example of this would be the situation created when one has written a will that does not dispose of all of one’s assets, perhaps because of an omitted residuary clause. The laws of the state of the decedent’s domicile control the disposition of the decedent’s property in an intestate situation, and the laws vary widely from state-to-state. Kentucky’s intestacy laws can be found in the Kentucky Revised Statutes, Section 391 and Section 392. A quick summary of those laws: Married Decedent: 1. With surviving descendants: $15,000 + 1⁄2 of remaining estate to spouse 1⁄2 of remaining estate to surviving descendants 2. Without surviving descendants, but with surviving parent(s): $15,000 + 1⁄2 of remaining estate to spouse 1⁄2 of remaining estate to surviving parent(s) 3. Without surviving descendants or parent(s): $15,000 + 1⁄2 of remaining estate passes to spouse 1⁄2 of remaining estate passes to siblings (or to

their descendants) 4. Without surviving issue, parent, siblings or descendants of siblings: All to spouse Unmarried Decedent: 1. With surviving descendants: All to surviving descendants 2. Without surviving descendants: Surviving parents, then brothers and sisters, then split between

grandparents and respective descendants.

Communities of Calling Program

The purpose of the Communities of Calling program is to explore our congregation’s understanding of calling both as a community and as individuals. This work is funded through a three-year grant from the Collegeville Institute. There is a team of clergy, staff, and parishioners who lead this work.

Three of our foundational theological claims for this project are:

Page 24: ST MATTHEW A S E NNUAL 2019 - St. Matthew's | Episcopal …...Derrick Grant, Director of Music Corey Logsdon, Music Assistant Daniel Horton, Weekday Maintenance Technician Bhola Khanal,

24

1. Every person has both a general call from God to discipleship and particular calls to embody their baptismal vows with their unique abilities and specific contexts.

2. Every particular call is a movement toward wholeness. 3. God has a particular concern and identification with those who are marginalized.

From this foundation we created three goals for year 1 and activities to support them:

1. Expand the congregation’s vocabulary around vocation and calling and provide resources for individuals to follow their callings. a. We took a vocational survey of the parish at the ministry fair in the fall. This was to give us a

baseline of how congregation members understand vocation. b. We will host an exhibition of the St. John’s Bible, a beautifully illuminated Bible that was the

product of Donald Jackson’s dream with the Benedictine monks of St. John’s Abbey. This is an example of an individual and a community who faithfully lived into a shared calling. We hope this will inspire us to think of what our community could do when we embrace a collective calling with courage and dedication.

2. Create a parish culture that encourages discernment through the transitions of life. . We will create Holy Listening Groups that offer deep listening in the transitions of life. We want members of our parish to know that their church is a place where they can come when they are at a transition in their life. These groups will not consist of experts providing solutions, but rather people from your church community listening and discerning alongside you for God’s call.

3. Begin tangible practices that integrate individual callings with our communal calling to a movement toward wholeness. . We have been hosting a series of skill-sharing classes. These classes introduce the language of vocation in the context of learning something from someone we already know. We hope that this will cultivate a sense of the great variety of callings that are already present in our community. a. We will host a Parish-wide weekend retreat this July. We hope that it will serve to lift up the Communities of Calling activities of year one and reflect as a Parish on what we have learned. b. We partnered with our food pantry neighbors to understand what their biggest barriers are to escaping poverty. We planned to then work to address one of those barriers in our community. We hope that over time the people who participate in the food pantry, including the clergy, volunteers, and neighbors, will come to see themselves as a unified community with a calling of its own, who make a difference in the world by living out our calling together. If you would like to learn more about the Communities of Calling Project please contact Kelly or Benjamin.

They suggest changes to the vestry if necessary. Please contact Edie Nixon (893-1392) if you are interested in serving on the Finance Committee.

BUILDING & GROUNDS CHURCH GARDEN MINISTRY Our church garden has continued to host 10 plots that parishioners could "own" for a year. Those who have tended these plots have not only reaped the benefits of the flowers and vegetables produced, but have also enjoyed a community built around a shared passion for Gardening.

Endless thanks goes to Pieter Keyzer and Franklin Jelsma for so much of the maintenance of the garden as well as their leadership and expertise in revitalizing the Church Garden Ministry.

This will be the fourth year we are offering parishioners a chance to have their own plot in our garden. It only costs $25 and is a great activity for families. If you are interested in gardening with us, please contact Benjamin Hart at [email protected] MEMORIAL GARDEN In 2019, a few small trees and perennial flowers were planted per the 2017 Master Memorial Garden Plan. A new bench was donated in memory of Mickey Peck. Church members are invited to help care for and maintain this sacred space. Tasks typically include weeding, mulching, trimming, and planting. Please contact Sara Ceresa if you are interested in helping. [email protected] or 502-544-0239. COMMUNICATIONS

COMMUNICATIONS TEAM The communications team is the leading edge of the church’s digital communications. The team works behind the scenes to reach out to the Louisville community and to the parish with important and relevant messages about St. Matthew’s. The team works on the church website, the video monitors in the narthex and outside Saints Hall, the videos of speakers and Clingman forums, audio recordings of liturgies and sermons, photography of church events, and some copy proofing work. We sing because our ancestors sang; beginning with the Israelites who sang after God saved them from the wrath of the Egyptians. More importantly, we sing because Jesus sang. In Mark’s gospel, we learn that after sharing a meal together, Jesus and the apostles sang a hymn before going out to the Mount of Olives. Singing unites our congregation in a prayer that goes deeper than just spoken texts. Singing takes scripture and immediately puts it into the mouths of the faithful. Often times, it is these texts people remember the most. They leave the church singing “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” and they continue that prayer throughout their lives. (Col. 3:16) The music ministry of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church fosters devotion to God, inspires the prayer of the congregation and encourages the spiritual and communal growth of its members. We gather on Wednesday evenings for rehearsal, but also for regular social events as well. Our choir currently has approximately 25 singers including one paid assistant. There is also an active handbell choir. The St. Matthews' Handbell Choir is currently full and includes one extra "floater" who can stand in if for some reason someone isn't available. This year, through the generous donation of Lillian Yeager's estate, we completed two phases of a three-phase organ refurbishment. The organ was originally built in 1967 and rebuilt in 2006 but most of the components are original. So far, the project has cost $8,100 and will ensure the integrity of the instrument for decades to come. It will be complete in January, 2020. We also welcomed Voces Novae to our building as artists in residence. Voces Novae is a semi-professional choir consisting of roughly 50 members of the Greater Louisville community and they specialize in contemporary choral works by living composers. They rehearse each week in our rehearsal hall, rent office space in the music wing, and perform one of their concerts in the Nave annually. The choir is open to anyone (including youth) that likes to sing. You are invited to come and continue this tradition of musical prayer with any of the choirs here at St. Matthews. Contact Derrick Grant for more information. ([email protected] or 859-552-2820)

ADULT, CHILDREN & YOUTH MINISTRIES YOUTH PROGRAM Youth in grades 5-12 gather in the Youth Wing on Sunday mornings after the 10am Eucharist for the Tweens (5-6 grades) and Youth Community Class (7-12 grades). Breakfast food items or occasional trips to Starbucks are offered during class for students to enjoy while developing their faith in a safe and fun environment. St. Matthew’s celebrated two graduating high school seniors in the spring of 2019. The St. Matthew's Youth Group meets regularly 2-3 times a month for service, social, and spiritual engagement. Youth enjoy serving the community at the Food Pantry, Christmas Caroling at the Episcopal Church Home, Assisting at an Habitat Interfaith Build where they youth wrote prayers and blessings on the studs. In addition to service projects, the youth enjoy games, taking charge to come up with their own ideas and follow through with the support of their leaders and families. Approximately 56 youth participate through educational programs, outreach ministries, and liturgical leadership in the Eucharist. During 2019, we had 25 active youth, 3rd graders through 12th graders, serving as acolytes. Once again, the youth led the church in

worship on Christmas Eve with nineteen cast members and approximately a dozen sheep who joined the Holy Family at the conclusion of the Christmas Pageant. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY – CHURCH SCHOOL Sunday morning following the 10AM service. We continue to offer the Godly Play program in two rooms for children in Kindergarten through 4th grade. The Primary room is for Kindergarten and 1st graders. The Intermediate room is 2nd through 4th graders. Each week a different story is told in Montessori style, utilizing simple materials. Stories include Bible, enrichment, and seasons of the church year. This year we have smaller class sizes due to fluctuation in church attendance. Godly Play continues to draw over 87% of eligible children that attend church. We also have numerous “visitors” as children enjoy bringing friends and visiting family when available. Parents and children continue to share with staff and teachers how much they love Godly Play and the team providing it. Much gratitude to our passionate and dedicated Godly Play team members: Ali Ahern, Laura Bomar (Administrator), Sara Ceresa, Wanda Jo Crivits, Jody Fletcher, Marie Griffin, Jan Lotz, and Lindsay Kasey. NURSERY Throughout the year we have four sitters who nurture and care for our young children. Tashia Gonzalez is the Lead Caregiver and Shelby Foley, Elizabeth Dicken, and Tori Simpson, Caregivers, are all trained and adept at guiding our youngest members and visitors. Most Sundays a brief lesson and special projects are shared as well as reading, singing, playing, and dancing may take place throughout the morning. The Nursery (both Toddler/Pk and Infant) are open from 9:15a to 12:00p each Sunday morning during the academic year. During the summer, the Nursery typically closes after the 10:00 a service. CHILDREN’S COMMITTEE The Children's Committee is an advisory committee that works with the Director of Ministry. The committee holds about four meetings a year and helps the director plan events that involve children, youth and the families of the church. Specifically, the committee advises on Sunday Church School, Youth and Youth Group activities, Walking in the Word, Worship Bags, Pancakes and Pajamas, Family Foyers, and other children's programs. Highlights of this last year include the yearly Easter Egg hunt, Opening Church School Program Taco Dinner, Christmas Pageant, Family Foyer's gatherings, Halloween Trunk or Treat & Chili Contest, Advent Family Fun Day, and the Church Campout. In the future, the committee hopes to continue to grow our programs that connect our children and youth with all members of the church. Chair: Lindsay Kasey; Church Camp: Josh Cramer; Family Foyers: Brian Kirby; Church School Administrator/Godly Play: Laura Bomar; Family Care Team: Rebecca Utley; Pancakes & Pj's: Josh Cramer; Walking in the Word: Dave & Jennifer Gardner Youth: Connie Savells. A great thanks goes to all the leaders and the many, many volunteers and special events coordinators! EARLY BIRD THEOLOGIANS The Early Bird Theologians (EBT) meet on Sundays at 9 a.m. in Meeting Room A during the Adult Faith Formation seasons. Coffee and treats coupled with CD/DVD studies and discussions provide the basis for exploring some of the most intriguing, controversial, and progressive Christianity issues of our day. Discussions have most recently been stimulated by viewing "Eclipsing Empire - Paul, Rome, and The Kingdom Of God". The DVD features New Testament scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. The program explores fresh insights into Paul's message of the Kingdom of God, its challenge to Roman imperial theology and the apostle's radical relevance for today. Contact Nan Lang ([email protected]) or Jay Redman ([email protected]) for more information about this engaging class. PUB THEOLOGY Pub Theology meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30-8 p.m. at Corner Cafe Louisville, 9307 La Grange Road. Not a class but a conversation, we gather over food and drink, inviting others to join us, as

we engage in open discussion about a different theological or spiritual topic each month. In the past year we've joined in such discussion topics as “War and Peace,” “Gun Violence,” and “Teaching People to Fish.” Contact Robin Garr for more information. CLINGMAN FORUM Clingman continues to be a great forum for sharing ideas and engaging the congregation. The attendees vary greatly both in number and the given individuals based on the topic or meeting purpose. BOOK CLUB Book Club meets the 2nd Monday of each month at 1:30p. The books are selected for the entire year with the help of Rob Glisen, librarian at Crescent Hill Library. The group uses the library book kits and participants do not purchase the books. They read a wide variety of books including fiction, historical, and biographical pieces. Books are not necessarily religious in nature. The focus of the group is fun and fellowship centered around the reading and lively discussions of good books. Contact for this group is Susan Kimbrough at [email protected] or 618-1797. THE MEN’S BREAKFAST The Men’s Breakfast gathers like a foyers group to enjoy a good meal and good company. The focus is on caring for one another. They are currently led by Joe Paul Pruett, [email protected] LADIES’ LUNCHEON The Ladies' Lunch Bunch, open to all women in the parish, meets every month on the third Thursday at 11:30 A.M. We gather at a local restaurant, chosen by the group, to enjoy each other and good food. It is not unusual when a life-long friendship is formed. Recent outings have included River House, Gramma Grassa, and August Moon. Join us every month or when you can. To make your reservation contact Peggy Enriquez. GOING DEEPER SPIRITUALLY The group is currently studying “The Gift of Years” by Joan Chittister. The rich discussion has revitalized and energized this group of women who intentionally seek spiritual growth. Last summer we recognized the need for consistent leadership, and Peggy Woolley volunteered to do this for us. Last year’s books also included a Lenten study of “Practicing Forgiveness” from Living Compass, followed by Helen Jones leading a discussion of “Reconciliation“ by Martin Smith. We invite you to join us as we continue delving into the process, value, and benefits of aging. Each week is a stand-alone session. Inspiring conversation is prompted by a question or quote from the readings. Join us at any point; no need to read ahead of time. Future book studies will follow the same format. We meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 9:45 in the library. Denee Bannister and Peggy Woolley. FOYERS Foyer--a French word meaning 'hearthside' implying the warmth of a close group of friends sharing a common love and concern for each other. There is something about gathering around a table. We relax, enjoy a meal, and really get to know each other. That is a foyer group! There are four types: restaurant dinner, restaurant brunch, home, and family. This year we also explored the possibility of an early-bird dinner group. Foyers is open to all. You can join during the annual sign-up in the fall or now. Contact Peggy Enriquez or Susan Kimbrough for restaurants, Deenee Bannister for home, and Brian Kirby for family groups. Our focus is on fellowship and friendship. Join! Be part of this ministry. FAITH AND LIFE Faith and Life meets in Meeting Room A on Sunday mornings after the 10 a.m. Eucharist. Faith and Life is a conversation, not a class. In collegial discussion we try to clarify our responses to the readings, prayers, and

sermon that we just heard in church by connecting those ideas with the news of the day and with our daily lives. Robin Garr moderates this group and is eager to hear your suggestions. WALKING IN THE WORD Walking in the Word is a children’s chapel program for children in Kindergarten through Third grade. Children begin worship with their families and leave for a portion of the Eucharist but return in time to take communion. For the Fall 2019 term the total attendance was 175 children with an average of 10 children each week. A new feature to the program during this period was the introduction of music into the curriculum, which the children really enjoyed. Derrick started to visit the children in order to practice singing different hymns that would be pertinent throughout the church calendar. Coordinators in 2019 continued to be Jennifer and David Gardner. DIMENSIONS OF FAITH Initiated in November 2011, Dimensions of Faith is a twice-yearly lecture series that aims to offer intellectually stimulating and provocative forums on social, ethical, and theological issues. It is intended to reflect the Episcopal (Anglican) tradition of being open to diverse points of view. This initiative came directly from the ReVision process, was one of the long-term goals approved by the Vestry in 2002, and is funded by a special endowment. In 2019, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove and Nadia Bolz-Weber were the guests for Dimensions of Faith. WOMEN IN CONVERSATION Women in Conversation is a book-based weekly discussion group, meeting at 12:30 PM on Tuesday afternoons. The wide variety of books read are suggested by and agreed upon by group members. All are welcome and can join by arriving on Tuesday afternoon or by contacting Lynn Miller. TOY LIBRARY The Toy Library, a Ministry of the Children of St. Matthews, officially opened in mid-January 2018. Staffed by children and adults, the Toy Library’s inventory of almost 500 donated, gently used toys is offered to the St. Matthews Community and Community Partners to borrow for a month at a time. By April of 2018, the Toy Library opened during the monthly Food Pantry. The Toy Library is also available for guests to come during week-day office hours. TOOL LIBRARY The Tool Closet continues its mission to share tools with members of the St. Matthews Community. We have relocated to the office space above Saint's Hall. In our new space, we have added shelving and tables and our tools are increasingly organized. We have tools for gardening, wood-working, home and automotive repair, heavy duty cleaning, and other aspects of household maintenance. We have a small, but reliable group, that borrows our tools and encourage others participate. We are continuing to look for ways to increase the number of people that borrow from our library.

LIBRARY ST. MATTHEW’S EPISCOPAL LIBRARY The library with its organized collection of materials provides an accessible and inviting space for study and research for individuals and groups. It circulates its almost 3000 books and media to parishioners of all ages. In addition to its Sunday morning hours between and after services, the library is available by appointment. The library’s OPAC (online public access catalog) is available 24/7 at [email protected]

The library committee is led by librarians Lee Fletcher, Kathy Bowling and Tyler Goldberg. Many parishioners assist with the library’s operation. Newcomers to St. Matthew’s are welcomed to the library as both patrons and prospective volunteers. Volunteers are especially needed to assist parishioners and to check out items after each Sunday morning service. The Library was originally established in 1979 and celebrated its 10th year in its current location during 2018. ST. MATTHEW’S ARCHIVES The Archives of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church was moved upstairs during the year and is now housed in Meeting Room B. It includes documents, photographs, oral histories and other media of the church from the church’s history. Some historical information can be accessed online at http://www.stmatthewsepiscopallouisville.org/library/archives-and-history/ For information and volunteer possibilities, contact Lee Fletcher at [email protected]. Interest in areas such as topical church histories, photography and computers are helpful for special projects. CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

CARE TEAM MINISTRY The Care Team ministry continues as a volunteer team of 34 parishioners. During 2019, we made 472 connections with our parish family through cards, emails, visits, phone calls and meal deliveries. Working closely with our clergy, the Care Teams provided support to parish members in need and enabled our clergy to focus on areas of ministry beyond the Care Team mission. Care Teams are committed to continue nurturing our parish family in 2020. We welcome new volunteers to provide care, and if you are interested in joining our ministry, please contact the Rev. Benjamin Hart, or Sarah Johansen and Vicki Zurlage, Care Team Co-Coordinators. EUCHARISTIC VISITORS Our Eucharistic Visitors take communion to parishioners who cannot come to church. We have a group of dedicated volunteers that are trained to perform this ministry. They receive a communion kit at one of our Sunday services and are sent out with words that remind us that even though we cannot all be together all the time, we are one body of Christ. If you are interested in becoming a Eucharistic Visitor or in receiving communion once a month, please contact the Rev. Benjamin Hart. FLOWER DELIVERY MINISTRY Each week the Sunday altar flowers are divided and sent out to let people know that we are thinking of them and care for them. Thoughtful volunteers divide and rearrange the Sunday altar flowers and other volunteers deliver the flowers to the selected recipients. If you are interested in volunteering for this ministry, please contact the Rev. Benjamin Hart. OUTREACH

OUTREACH COMMITTEE St. Matt’s is active in a variety of outreach activities that honor our commitment to be Christ’s hands in the world. Some provide works of love, like the Seamen’s Ministry, involving dedicated women (and men) who create caps, vests and scarves for those who work year round as seafarers; last year over 168 articles were beautifully completed. Wayside Christian Mission group provides and serves meals at the Mission; they are

essentially self-sustaining, but donations of time and/or food are also accepted as needed. Churchill downs Backside Chapel provides meals, prayers and fellowship to workers at the Downs, and Life Skills support child care and meal preparation for young mothers learning management and coping skills at Home for the Innocents. Some ministries receive funding through our budget to operate as sponsored outreach ministries of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, including the St. George’s Scholar Institute and St. George’s Episcopal Church Relief fund (Christmas food boxes). We also support the Episcopal Church Home Women’s Board (providing financial assistance for resistants), Habitat for Humanity (partnering this fall in a multi-faith new home construction to be completed in February), Kenya Kids @ Rongo (orphanage and school.) We also support the Rector’s discretionary funds. In addition to these good works, St. Matt’s sponsors collection ministries, including quarterly canned food for St. George’s and Calvary’s food pantries, St. MAMS (St. Matthews Area Ministries) school supplies in July, warm coats for refugees through KRM in the fall, and the Advent tree Christmas gifts. Our parishioners are exceedingly generous and these ministries are much appreciated throughout the communities we touch. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, St. Matts opens Saints Hall to partner with Dare to Care in distributing foodstuffs to folks in need of nutritional support. Many parishioners find this a most rewarding activity and they are often joined by students and adults from the community in the setup, provision selection and cleanup activities after sharing time with our guests. If any of these ministries interest you, don’t hesitate to ask for more information. All are welcome! ADVENT TREE We collected gifts from 170 gift tags for Kentucky refugee ministries, St. George’s scholar institute, St. Mams, the food pantry, and CASA. Many to all who bought gifts to share with in our community. LIFE SKILLS Life Skills is a year around program of the Home of the Innocents that provides life skills education for young adults (ages 18 – 24) and their children, who are HUD homeless. The young adults attend class either on Tuesday evening or Thursday noon, every other week. The first week in a month that the classes are held, volunteers from St. Matthew’s may assist by signing up to help with childcare during the classes or by helping prepare a meal for the meeting. Food items are donated by parishioners of St. Matthew’s and some are purchased using Outreach Funding. Childcare volunteers may sign up on the bulletin board to be contacted with instructions. Cook volunteers and food contributors may also sign up on the bulletin board. MAGAZINE MINISTRY This past year our parish has gathered and taken about 20 magazines weekly to the Episcopal Church Home for their residents. The residents have enjoyed sports, current event, home decor, cooking and travel magazines. This makes life richer for the residents and allows them to enjoy a diversity of readings that would otherwise be difficult to purchase and provide. Please continue to donate any current magazine to the bin in the Supply Closet in front to of the Welcome Desk in the Narthex. Thank you to everyone who has so graciously passed their recent magazines on to the Episcopal Church Home. FOOD COLLECTIONS One month each quarter in 2019 St Matthew’s parishioners donated non-perishable food items toward supporting the food pantries at both Calvary and St George’s churches. Usually we fill the collection basket in

the narthex at least two times over and we are able then to provide each location with a substantial amount of food items. After each of the four collection months volunteers from SMEC divide the food evenly and make deliveries. Contact Don Kissling or Tom Kolb for more information or to volunteer to make deliveries. FOOD PANTRY The St. Matthew’s Food Pantry operates on the third Saturday every month from around 9 a.m. to midday, turning Saints Hall into a welcoming supermarket where as many as 350 families (1,000 persons) come each month for groceries provided by Louisville’s Dare To Care Food Bank. Adult and youth volunteers from St. Matthew’s work side by side with volunteers from our neighbors who come as guests to receive food, along with volunteers from the community, other churches, and service organizations. There’s something for everyone to do: help set up tables and organize the food, help our neighbors navigate the process, help them load food into their cars, retrieve grocery carts, and clean up at the conclusion of the day. Throughout, we all take care to represent St. Matthew’s with welcoming smiles, being present for our hungry neighbors and hearing what they have to say. Contact Lynn Miller or Robin Garr for more information. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY The St. Matthew's Habitat for Humanity work crew meets the first Saturday of each month to help build or rehabilitate affordable housing for low-income families in Louisville. No prior experience is necessary. In the summer of 2019, we helped complete a rehab home that we had worked on for 2 years. In the fall of 2019, our parish donated $7000 toward helping sponsor construction on a new home with our Christian, Jewish, and Muslim neighbors in Louisville. Our work crew also participated on multiple build days. Please contact Sara Ceresa for more information [email protected] or 502-544-0239. Louisvillehabitat.org KENYA KIDS AT RONGO Kenya Kids at Rongo, Inc. is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit corporation operating in Louisville, KY since May 2017. The focus of Kenya Kids at Rongo is providing financial support for the operation of Ebenezer Children’s Center outside of Rongo, Kenya. Ebenezer is a product of the faith, vision and long-term commitment of Kenyan Daniel Ochieng and his wife Damaris. Daniel and Damaris live on-site with their family and are responsible for the management and supervision of Ebenezer operations. We are truly thankful for their diligence and dedication. Ebenezer provides for the basic human needs of 60-75 Kenyan orphans. Young children attend an on-site primary school. In addition, Kenya Kids at Rongo supports tuition-based secondary school and university education opportunities for older Ebenezer orphan scholars. Vocational training (tailoring and welding) is available for orphans that do not pursue further education opportunities. Thank you, St. Matthews Episcopal Church, for your generous support of Kenya Kids at Rongo as an outreach ministry. Your support makes a huge impact in the lives of the children at Ebenezer Children's Center. For further information visit kenyakidsatrongo.org. KENTUCKY REFUGEE MINISTRIES (KRM) Outreach collects gently used cold weather coats, hats, gloves and scarves for KRM each fall. Currently because of the slow arrival of refugees, KRM cannot accept household and furniture donations. Those interested in volunteering may contact Denee Banister at 593-1228 ([email protected]) or Emily Pruett at 396-3191 ([email protected]). ST. GEORGE’S SCHOLAR INSTITUTE 2019 was the first full year residing at the California Neighborhood Community Center and the location has proven good for both the facilities and location to schools. We seem to have many youths from Central High School in our program. While we had only one senior graduating in May 2019 there are fifteen juniors in our program preparing to graduate in May 2020. These youths participate in the Project Ready Program in

Partnering with SGSI in the summer program were JCPS, Metro Parks, Lego Robotics, Nike for Healthy F.I.T., Louisville Public Library, Kosair Charities “tennis lessons” and Dare to Care “Cooking Matters”. At the first Clingman Forum in September, Mr. Arthur Cox, the Executive Director, spoke to small group to tell about SGSI and amazingly that Sunday in the Courier Journal was an editorial statement from a young women in the SGSI program who wrote about how St George’s programs “gave me hope at a time in my life when I felt hopeless.” Embrace, educate and empower” is the motto. The annual ”Celebration of Success” was held at the new Louisville Botanical Gardens on October 10th and fourteen people from St Mathew’s Church attended. Mid-year, Phil Eschels, form SMEC joined the SGSI Board and will be a great addition. ST. MATTHEWS AREA MINISTRIES (ST. MAM’S) St. Matthews Episcopal Church joins together with other area churches to provide resources to those in need in our community through the St. Matthews Area Ministries. The ministry provides such services as emergency food, rent and utility payments. St. MAM’s also provides a food pantry and homebound delivery for those who cannot come to the food pantry on their own. The ministry provides “Bountiful Backpacks (school supplies and backpacks), Early Essentials for toddlers and infants (diapers and other early childhood needs, a Kids Closet, School supplies, a winter Coat Closet, and several seasonal support programs. St. MAM’s obtains the majority of it’s funding from two events, a golf scramble each spring and a live (and silent auction) event held each fall. SMEC-Outreach Committee has allocated funds for interested parishioners to participate in these events on a first come-first serve basis. Contact Faith Cirre for more information. SEAMEN’S MINISTRY Hand knitted and crocheted scarves, hats and cowls are included in Christmas boxes for the mariners who work on our river systems. In 2019 St. Matthew’s contributed 162 scarves, hats and cowls. Patterns are located near the bulletin board at the top of the staircase and online at Seamen’s Church Institute under Christmas at Sea. SOCIAL JUSTICE SOCIAL JUSTICE The Equal Justice Group of St. Matthew’s parish members were inspired by the 2018 Lenten sermon of Martin Smith. In this sermon he reminded us of the scripture that instructs to look the serpent in the eye and heal. The Equal Justice group felt called to look the serpent of Racism in the eye, and to work with others within/outside our church in helping the Louisville community to heal the many injustices of racism. The group was awarded a grant from the Kentucky Diocese, and early in 2019, 4 members of the Equal Justice Group went to Indianapolis to attend a Crossroads Workshop on Systemic Racism. Following this dynamic and eye-opening experience, the group saw a need for better understanding how so many injustices stemming from racism have been historically perpetuated within all institutions in the nation at a systemic or structural level. We facilitated presentations and discussions to help further this understanding in ways that were not being offered by other parish groups. A Becoming the Beloved Community Lenten study encouraged reflection and conversation on these issues. Members of the group offered 4 presentations on related topics during Sunday afternoon sessions. We also supported the Angela Project, acknowledging the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans to America and the ongoing consequences of slavery. During the year, our rector created a Social Justice Committee, to which members of the Equal Justice Group are members. We look forward to continuing to make contributions to this committee and to collaborative work with other organizations in the Louisville community on racial and other social injustices.

HOSPITALITY KITCHEN COMMITTEE The Kitchen Committee inspects, cleans and re-establishes order in the Saints Hall kitchen and the serving bar area of Saints Hall each week and the Staff and Choir kitchens each month. Periodically, all drawers, shelves and cabinets are cleaned and organized. The committee also maintains supplies for the coffee ministry as well as the kitchen. Members of the committee include: Peggy Enriquez, Mary Jo Gillim, Ann Hines, Lindsay Kasey, Sharon Nesmith, Diane Perry, Julie Stodghill, Barbara Uligian, Sarah Weston. For concerns and questions or to volunteer, contact Sharon Nesmith at 228-5918 ([email protected]) or any member of the committee. Cooks and Bottle Washers

C&B make our parish meals happen! They set tables, prepare food, serve same, and then provide the cleanup. Clean up will hereafter be known as the Inner Sanctum, a prestigious group. If you love throwing dinner parties and working in the warmth of a kitchen with friendly folks then C&B is a worthy ministry to join. St. Matthew's has a long and joyful history of celebrating our faith and community through the breaking of bread together. C&B keeps that tradition going. Join us!
