When direct communication is not possible, we use the media as indirect providers of information and as plat- forms for exchange and discussion. The media serve to educate, inform, and entertain, with the entertainment aspect often outweighing the others. Without the media, we could organize neither our private life nor the com- plexity of our modern society. The media are like the communicative cement that holds society together-the larger and more complex the society, the more urgently we need the media. A democracy, especially, cannot function without the free exchange of opinions and in- formation and without the participation of all. HOW DOES THE CHURCH SEE THE MEDIA? The media are necessary building blocks of modern soci- eties. They are not ends in themselves; rather, as social means of communication, they serve people and help them to understand one another. The media-and those who make them available and distribute them-have an ethical responsibility. They must direct their activity toward the goal of mutual understanding: What fosters this understanding, what impedes it? How can man and his social relations be promoted? What developments serve the common good, for example, the free exchange of news and opinions? The Pontifical Council for Social Communications, which was founded in 1948, deals in- tensively with the questions: 1) How can the faith be proclaimed in an appropriate way in the media? and 2) How are the media to be used “correctly”? “The fact that we can speak with each other makes us human beings.” ~Karl Jaspers ~taken from the (DOCAT) Upcoming Events Meatloaf Dinner Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 4:00 - 7:00 PM @ Parish Center Ash Wednesday ~ Lent Begins February 26th, 2020 Mass Schedule: 8:00 AM @ St. Mary 11:30 AM @ St. Mark 7:00 PM @ St. Mary

WEEKLY CATECHESIS

WHAT ARE THE MEDIA FOR?

When direct communication is not possible, we use the media as indirect providers of information and as plat-forms for exchange and discussion. The media serve to educate, inform, and entertain, with the entertainment aspect often outweighing the others. Without the media, we could organize neither our private life nor the com-plexity of our modern society. The media are like the communicative cement that holds society together-the larger and more complex the society, the more urgently we need the media. A democracy, especially, cannot function without the free exchange of opinions and in-formation and without the participation of all. HOW DOES THE CHURCH SEE THE MEDIA?

The media are necessary building blocks of modern soci-eties. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications, which was founded in 1948, deals in-tensively with the questions:

1) How can the faith be proclaimed in an appropriate way in the media? and 2) How are the media to be used “correctly”?

“The fact that we can speak with each

other makes us human beings.”

Prayer for the Selection of a New Bishop

Merciful Father, you gave us shepherds as successors of the apostles

to guide and govern your church.

We implore your Holy Spirit to guide the selection pro-cess as a new bishop is chosen to lead our diocese.

May he be a pastor filled with holiness and compassion

who will foster healing and a greater love of your name.

Allow our hearts to be open to the candidate of your choosing so that, together as disciples of Jesus,

we may continue to build your kingdom.

Amen

Altar Server of the Year

Next weekend, Dominic Sietmann will be receiving the Al-tar Server of the Year Award at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Buffalo. Dominic, his family and Father John will be attend-ing a special Mass and luncheon in his honor. Please be sure to congratulate Dominic on this well-deserved honor. A note from Dominic: “My name is Dominic Sietmann, I've been a server here for about 4 years now and I would like to take some time to encourage anyone who may be on the fence about serving at Mass. When I first started learning, my friend Carter Neumann helped teach me the ropes to become a server. He didn't just teach me the physical actions, but the spiritual meaning be-hind each action as well. The things he shared and the pro-cess of serving over the past few years have helped me to appreciate the Mass in a clearer perspective. When we serve at the altar we are not just serving the priest, we are serving the Lord Himself. Each action we make there, at the foot of the altar, points our attention to Christ in the Eucharist throughout the Mass, just as the actions of the saints pointed to Christ throughout their lives. If you are thinking about becoming a server I encourage you to ask any questions you might have! I'm here to help you learn just like Carter and other servers helped me along the way. Feel free to reach out any time.

Bulletin announcements should be submitted electronically to [email protected]. Flyers should also be sent electronically in Word doc format in case any chang-es or adjustments need to be made from our end. All posted meetings and events at St. Mary & St. Mark should be announced with at least 2 week’s notice, and an EVENT FORM MUST be submitted to Sherry. Please plan your meetings and events well in advance, so that they get on the calendar. All Events must be advertised - (bulletin, pulpit announce-ments, and flyers) with 6 week’s notice. Pulpit announcements must be submitted by 9 AM on Wednesday, to Jackie at [email protected].
