Alvin’s Message Welcome to the Church of Saint John this morning. The Evangelist, Saint Mark, tells us two stories of Jesus and the Sabbath laws. According to the fourth commandment one was not suppose to work on the Sabbath. A family has six days to labour but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord God. Several biblical texts specify the kinds of work prohibited on the Sabbath, such as baking, cooking, food-gathering, travelling, plowing, reaping, carrying a burden and kindling a fire. In the first story Jesus’ disciples were seen, by the Pharisees, as breaking the Sabbath Law. They were reaping, winnowing, threshing and preparing the grain. However, note Jesus’ response to the Pharisees, “The Sabbath was made for man (male and female), not man for the Sabbath.” If that is the case (God’s word is truth) then, Jesus turns the tables on the Pharisees in the second story. We have a male who has a deformed hand. Would Jesus cure him on the Sabbath. God is love, compassion, and mercy, therefore, he will heal the man. Jesus is angry with the Pharisees for their hardness of heart. They could not see that meeting a human need was a lawful act to be performed on the Sabbath. Note, that the Pharisees are already putting a case together to have Jesus destroyed. Do we have a hardened or stone heart, which will not allow us to show compassion, love, and mercy to our neighbour. If we do, then, God is angry with us, also. The Collect of the Day

The Proclamation of the Word

A READING FROM THE FIRST OF BOOK OF SAMUELNow the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The

word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he couldnot see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet goneout, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the arkof God was. Then the Lord called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here Iam!" and ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said,"I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. The Lord calledagain, "Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, foryou called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." NowSamuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yetbeen revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And hegot up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eliperceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel,"Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, Lord, for yourservant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now theLord came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" AndSamuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening." [Then the Lord said toSamuel, "See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make bothears of anyone who hears of it tingle. On that day I will fulfil against Eli allthat I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For Ihave told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquitythat he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did notrestrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity ofEli's house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever." Samuellay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of theLord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel andsaid, "Samuel, my son." He said, "Here I am." Eli said, "What was it that hetold you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also,if you hide anything from me of all that he told you." So Samuel told himeverything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, "It is the Lord; let himdo what seems good to him." As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him

Lord God of the nations, you have revealed your will to allpeople and promised us your saving help. May we hear and do whatyou command, that the darkness may be overcome by the power ofyour light; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives andreigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan toBeer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.]

1 SAMUEL 3:1-10 (11-20)

PSALM 139Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my

sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted

with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, OLord, know it altogether.

You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me.Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attainto it.

For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together inmy mother's womb. I will thank you because I am marvellously made;your works are wonderful, and I know it well.

My body was not hidden from you, while I was being made insecret and woven in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all ofthem were written in your book; they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them.

How deep I find your thoughts, O God! how great is the sum ofthem! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than thesand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.

PSALM 139:1-5, 12-17

A READING FROM THE SECOND LETTER OF PAUL TO THECORINTHIANS

We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lordand ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who said,"Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give thelight of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Butwe have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that thisextraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. Weare afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven todespair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesusmay also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are alwaysbeing given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may bemade visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:5-12The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPELReader: The Lord be with you. People And with thy Spirit.

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDINGTO MARK People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

One sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as theymade their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Phariseessaid to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on thesabbath?" And he said to them, "Have you never read what David didwhen he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? Heentered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate thebread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests toeat, and he gave some to his companions." Then he said to them, "Thesabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; sothe Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath." Again he entered thesynagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. Theywatched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so thatthey might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the witheredhand, "Come forward." Then he said to them, "Is it lawful to do good orto do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?" But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardnessof heart and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched itout, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediatelyconspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love youhave made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; inyour Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Wordmade flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to beincarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of theworld. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy tostand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he washanded over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our LordJesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke

it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “ Take, eat: this is my body whichis given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper hetook the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Wheneveryou drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. (Sung)Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

We prayyou, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that theymay be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the newcovenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptablein him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to thatcity of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; throughJesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of theChurch, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, andin whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Exciting News:Another Syrian family will be coming to Lunenburg!

Many of you helped the family of Ahmad and FatmehAyash to settle in Lunenburg two years ago. Thanks to yourhelp, they are thriving. Ahmad has been working for most ofhis time in Canada, the children are in school, and Fatmeh hasacquired her first driver’s licence and continues to improveher English.

Quite naturally, they want to share this new start withothers, and since Ahmad has been working, there is enoughmoney left from the original funding to sponsor anotherfamily.

We have just received word that Fatmeh’s nephewMohammad, his wife Maryam, and their daughter Sham havebeen notified that they will be coming to Canada on June 7th.(And, by the way, Maryam is pregnant, with the child due atthe end of July. A new Canadian on the way!)

This means we have two weeks to get ready.

Our primary needs right now are a 2-bedroom apartment(with rent in the $800 per month range), as well as furnishingsfor the family (good furniture, small kitchen appliances, etc.).If you have items which might be appropriate, information ona potential residence, or questions, please call DeborahPryce at 902-634-8395 or Graham Pearson at 902-640-2048.

Please note that all items will first need to beexamined by a member of the Refugee Committee, andmultiple items may not be accepted (for example, the familywon’t need three sofas). Thank you for your understanding.

The Lunenburg and Area Refugee Committee thanksyou for your support, and we look forward to meeting ournew neighbours!
