THE FUTURE IN YOUR HANDS

During these times of lockdown and social distancing measures directed by government, charities such as our churches are having an incredibly hard time raising and securing funds to keep solvent. Bills still need to be paid (eg. Insurance) In the recent past funds have been created during our much-loved social events such as coffee mornings and domino evenings. Sadly, we cannot host these types of events at this time and your churches need your help. Please consider contacting a churchwarden and either making a one-off donation or increasing your already much appreciated planned giving. The future of our churches really do lie in your hands. Happenings

We hope you are well and virus free. April has been a strange month but we’ve been blessed with good weather. I’m sure everyone’s garden is beginning to take shape, even if we’ve no plants to plant. It seems strange not to be in church on Sundays, but Archdeacon Peter stepped into the breach and set up Zoom. We were only 3 at first but our numbers have gradually increased to 14/15 including a cat and Ari! I can’t say we are good at getting online together but we are improving- plenty of noises off, and loss of video from time to time. We are very grateful to the Archdeacon for providing an opportunity for us to be together. You will see elsewhere in Outlook, news of his future. He is handing his Zoom time to our Area Dean, Jeremy Thompson. His email address is [email protected] if you would like to join us at 10am each Sunday. Please send him your email address and he’ll get in touch. It is good fun waving to everyone as well as spiritually meeting with everyone! Do try it. Some wonderful news we heard is that Norma and Phyllis from the Mothers’ Union have been regularly contacting members to check that they are managing in this lockdown. We are always so grateful for the kindness and caring of the people of Haltwhistle and Greenhead. Billy Bell’s and Richard Skeet’s have agreed to have the May Outlook outside their shops for us to collect when we’re in town. Isn’t that wonderful. So we’ll print a few more this month. Not only are we grateful for this we need to thank those shops who are also willing to deliver to our homes. We have quite a few. We are so lucky! We also need to mention all those heroes who have undertaken to shop for us and deliver our shopping. Online shopping isn’t possible for everyone so phone ordering is particularly handy to so many of us. Queuing to enter our shops is a new experience but everyone is being very positive and quite patient and jolly. It is amazing what you learn as you queue. How’s your hair. Mine changes from a haystack to Dougal from the Magic Roundabout for those old enough to remember! Come back Caroline. We’ve also been contemplating other things we miss most at the moment. Our families visiting, leg waxes, friends meeting together, the pub, football, the Monday Prayers Together and even church. We are sure you have more! Let us know. Perhaps when all this is over we will continue to care for each other. Please stay safe. We hope to see you all next month. Who knows we may be able to meet each other soon. Stay safe, God bless.

Archdeacon of Lindisfarne leaving Newcastle Diocese after nearly 25 years – appointed next Dean of Derby The Archdeacon of Lindisfarne, the Venerable Peter Robinson is to leave his role in the Diocese of Newcastle to become the next Dean of Derby. Peter has been archdeacon since 2008 and worked in the oil industry before being ordained in 1995. The Lindisfarne archdeaconry was extended when Peter became archdeacon to include the seven deaneries of Morpeth, Alnwick, Bamburgh and Glendale, Norham, Corbridge, Hexham and Bellingham. Currently, Peter is chair of the Newcastle Board of Education, which oversees all Church of England schools in the diocese, is the lead for community engagement in Northumberland, and is responsible for the rural delivery of the diocesan vision, growing church bringing hope. He has been an Honorary Canon at Newcastle Cathedral since 2007. On the announcement of his appointment in Derby, Peter said: “It will be hard to say farewell to the North East which has been our family home for 30 years now, but I have a strong sense of call to Derby Cathedral and Derby Diocese. “I am grateful to the Bishops under whom I have served for the opportunities to work in some wonderfully rich and fruitful places - suburban North Shields, inner-city Byker and rural Northumberland. I have had the privilege of helping to pioneer new forms of church and theological education and also to lead on the rural strand of the diocesan strategy. We will miss our many friends and colleagues as we depart for this exciting role in Derby. I hope we can keep in touch!” Following news of his appointment, the Bishop of Newcastle, the Right Reverend Christine Hardman said: “The Church’s discernment that God is calling Peter Robinson to be Dean of Derby will evoke mixed feelings for all of us. Delight for Peter, and this exciting new chapter in his ministry, and also a sense of loss as we say goodbye to someone who has served in this diocese for nearly twenty-five years.

Archdeacon of Lindisfarne leaving Newcastle Diocese after nearly 25 years – appointed next Dean of Derby continued...

“Peter has served as Archdeacon of Lindisfarne with outstanding dedication, and his contribution to the senior leadership team and to the life of the Diocese of Newcastle has been very significant, and deeply appreciated. Peter will be greatly missed, and he and Sarah leave us with our love and prayers as they move to Derby.” The Right Reverend Libby Lane, the Bishop of Derby, said: “I am delighted to welcome Peter as Dean of Derby. He is a man of inspiring faith, with a remarkable breadth of ministerial and professional experience. Peter is someone with a combination of deep love for people and place, and the capacity to think and act with strategic clarity. “I look forward to working with him in the city and across the diocese. We are very blessed that God has called him to serve among us. I ask you to join me in praying for Peter and Sarah as they prepare to move, and for ourselves as we seek God’s Kingdom together.” Peter trained for ministry at Cranmer Hall in Durham and served his curacy in North Shields. Following his curacy, he became priest in charge at St. Martin’s, Byker - where he was highly successful in bringing together a challenging inner-city community, designing a new church building and attracting a visit from the Home Secretary to showcase the community’s achievement. He has also been director of the Urban Ministry and Theology project in Newcastle before his current role. Peter will take up his new position in the summer once the coronavirus restrictions allow him to do so.

The congregations of Holy Cross Church and St.

Cuthbert’s Church offer congratulations to our good

friend the Venerable Peter Robinson and wish him

well in his new role and new life in Derbyshire. May

the transition be a smooth one when conditions

finally permit.

Haltwhistle Memorial Hospital

View from my hospital window.

As I look out of my hospital window I am remembering the use of that block of Edwardian buildings in the1940’s, my youth. The end one on Station Corner was a coal merchant. Then came Dickinson’s Furniture Shop, they went on from Haltwhistle to have businesses in Brampton and Hexham. Then there was Birkits Grocery Shop with huge slabs of butter, a bacon slicer and butter was cut off with a knife. The next one was Birkits bread and cheese/china? Shop and upstairs was a café. My mother had army officers’ wives staying with us at Hougill and I was taken out in the mornings and the ‘place to go’ was Birkits café. The café overlooked the hospital grounds from the window on the corner of the bakery wall, and in my youth the gates were only opened on Remembrance Sunday. Birkits went on to have bakery businesses in Penrith and the Lakes. I have had a ‘love affair’ with Haltwhistle Street ever since a child, and generations of Seaham pupils aged eleven soon knew where Haltwhistle was! Diana Robison. (Apologies to Di if my deciphering let me down. I think her room overlooks Mo’s convenience store so she keeps an eye on us all as we go about our daily lives. She’s still knitting and writing copious letters!)

Daily Hope Phone-Line

A free national phone-line Daily HOPE has been launched aimed particularly at the over

75s who don’t have access to the internet. Research indicates that some three million

people – particularly those in this age group have no, or very irregular, access to the

Internet.

The line will be available 24 hours a day on 0800 804 8044

It is a simple new way to bring worship and prayer from the Church of England into

people’s homes while church buildings are closed. Callers will hear a special greeting from

the Archbishop of Canterbury before being able to choose from a range of options,

including Prayer During the Day and Night Prayer updated daily, from Common Worship,

and a recording of the Church of England’s weekly national online service. A section called

Hymn Line will also offer callers a small selection of hymns, updated daily. An option

entitled ‘Hymns We Love’ provides a hymn and reflection and is based on an initiative by

Connections, a group focused on this age group.

If you think of anyone who might like to use this new service please do pass on the number to them.

Having circulated some updates by email since we have all been staying at home, it was suggested I might submit a blog or diary type article for Outlook. How to go about it? I will need to check some of the facts about why and how we are all staying at home, and also I need to relate some of the context, locally and nationally. I can read my own diary and my old emails, but I need to do some research – thank you Mr Google! I think I can possibly do something with all of this: so here goes. 2020 begins with a 4 degree frost. I do my monthly test of the emergency lights at church and then follow the sport – Carlisle lose 4-1 at Crewe (not a good start!); Newcastle lose 3-0 at home to Leicester – although having lost 4 players to injury they play half the game with 10 men. The papers open with an optimistic note having put the general election behind us and a government in place with a majority to push on with their policies. In Australia extensive bushfires continue: many communities are cut off by the fires and many households have lost everything. Not in the headlines, but China has reported an outbreak of a ‘pneumonia of unknown cause’ in a city called Wuhan: this is a city with a population of 11 million yet most of us have never heard of it! These are my opening sentences. I am still researching: after two days I have filled two pages of notes and I have just got as far as mid-February. It is dawning on me that I will have to restrict myself in one way or another. I could cover everything up to date (I am writing this on Monday 27 April and I have just heard Boris Johnson speak from the steps of 10 Downing Street, having returned from his convalescence at Chequers) or choose an earlier point and include more. I decide on the latter option, but what date should I pick? I will just keep writing and stop at an appropriate moment. Through January, there are some unexpected stories in the news: Prime Minister’s aide, Dominic Cummins, has called for ‘weirdos and misfits’ to apply for government jobs; Prince Harry and Meghan announce their intention to ‘step back’ from royal duties and move towards financial self-sufficiency while splitting their time between the UK and North America. Still largely unreported, the Chinese have identified the cause of the pneumonia outbreak to be new type of coronavirus similar to SARS that spread to 37 countries and killed 750 people in 2003. In Hubei province, around Wuhan city, outbound flights and trains have been halted. As Chinese New Year approaches many citizens would expect to journey to visit family around the country so the authorities enforce severe restrictions on travel within China. Some countries are checking passengers arriving from Wuhan showing symptoms of the coronavirus and will adopt precautionary quarantine procedures.

My Coronavirus Diary

(and other observations)

In Haltwhistle church life resumes its regular pattern after the Christmas holidays: Monday Prayers Together and Choir; Tuesday Drop-in; Wednesday Women’s Fellowship (but not for me); Thursdays Open the Book or planning or doing Messy Church or printing production; Friday Art Club; Saturday Coffee Mornings; Sunday Worship. In writing that list I call to mind a quotation “The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there”. I look this up in my Oxford Dictionary of Quotations and discover it is taken from a 1953 novel by L P Hartley (1895-1972). I am sure you already knew that! However I must press on – the quote could equally apply to my next paragraph. On Friday 31

st January the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. Brexit Day!

After decades of disputes and five years of argument and tumult 52% might be happy and 48% might be sad. An historic day: although, in the fullness of time, it may be trumped (sorry!) by news from elsewhere. Two Chinese nationals (a student and her mother) are diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in York and transferred to the specialist facilities at Newcastle RVI. (They both recover and are later discharged.) A group of Brits returning from Wuhan are taken to accommodation on the campus of Arrowe Park Hospital Wirral to quarantine for 14 days. I have come to a stopping point. I have not mentioned that Beales (Robbs as we knew it) has gone into administration and is set to close; nor the collapsing derelict hotel building in Carlisle; nor the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. I will stop here – before the wettest February on record begins. To be continued. John Clark (not Featherstone Castle).

From the Registers

Holy Cross Church RIP

It is with sadness that we announce the death of:

Eric Watson 26th March

John Watson 15th April

Our love and prayers go to their families and friends.

“ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO THEM O LORD, AND LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE UPON THEM”

O God, who would fold both heaven and earth in a single peace:

let the design of thy great love lighten upon the waste of our wraths and sorrows:

and give peace to thy Church, peace among nations,

peace in our dwellings, and peace in our hearts:

through thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

If anyone would like their departed relatives or friends added to our years mind list and

mentioned in our weekly prayers please fill in a request form (available in church) and

pass to a church warden.
