Thursday 30/03 was the day that 120 Tour De Cure bike riders arrived in St Helens. The 2017 tour was a long 1270 km trip from Hotham to Hobart. On Friday morning a group of riders including some well-known faces from the Sun-rise program, visited our Prep to grade 5 students. They explained the purpose of their tour was to raise funds for cancer research, shared stories from the tour and gave good messages about keeping fit, eating healthy and being happy. Each day the tour donated $10 000 to a local cause and these are some of the projects they funded while in Tasmania.
On Wednesday 29 March in Launceston, $10,000 was presented to Camp Quality to fund a family camp in Swansea.
On Thursday 30 March in St Helens, $10,000 was presented to the Leukaemia Foundation to fund a Cooking for Chemo program, which caters for the specific dietary requirements of people undergoing chemotherapy.
On Friday 31 March in Swansea, $10,000 was presented to the Cancer Council to erect sun shades in Swansea.
I am sure you would agree that this is an amazing effort by all those involved to give their time to such a worthwhile cause.
FUND-RAISER FOR TOUR DE CURE The Tour De Cure Team left us with a brand new bike (pictured right), so that our school could assist with the fund raising for this great cause. This bike could be yours so:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,
Great Learning It is hard to believe we are already at the end of Term 1. A busy but exceptionally reward-
ing term for students and staff. Students have been involved in a wide range of learning
activities beyond the classroom, including participation in the following over the past 2
weeks:
The Inter-high Surfing Competition
The Science and Engineering Challenge
Secondary Inter-high Swimming Carnival
The Working on Water Program
Primary East North East Athletics
Kinder – Grade 2 Athletics
Tour de Cure visit
Primary Swimming and Water Safety Programs
Primary excursions to the Launceston Planetarium
Grade 5 Wild Devil Recovery Project
Launch into Learning out and about visit to Pyengana
Bravehearts presentation to our birth – grade 2 students
Year 11-12 parent/student/teacher interviews.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff for the huge amount of additional work
they have put in to provide our children with such a wide range of rich learning opportuni-
ties.
Great Curriculum and Great Coffee
Over the course of the year, all students in the middle
school participate in the following Futures Subjects: MDT,
Cooking, Drama, ICT, Music, Art, Indonesian and First
Aid. As part of the cooking class, students visit the Trade
Training Centre where they participate in a short Barista
Course, learning how to stretch milk (the technique used
to heat and create the desired amount foam) and make
industry standard coffees. Our Trade Training Centre
Coordinator, Darren Lewis, is helping students learn these
skills. Supervision of this class is a favourite part of my
week and I have been fortunate to have been served many
great hot chocolates and lattes this term!

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
CHALLENGE 2017 On Tuesday the 4th of April 29 eager grade 9 -10 students left school at 6:30 am to compete in this year’s Science and Engineering Challenge held at the UTAS Newnham campus.
Eight schools were competing on the day. Our students were divided into teams of 3 or 4 to try to complete either half-day or full day activi-ties that ranged from bridge and catapult building to puzzles related to electricity distribution and code breaking. Each activity earned points that were tallied to determine the overall placings.
Our students participated fully and are to be commended for the way that they represented the school. During the day there were some excellent highlights including an overall first place for the ‘Confounding Communications’ activity. We finished seventh overall in a hard fought competition. Pictured below are Maddie, Keeley, Kira, Amy and Charli.

Great Feedback
Last week the ENE combined athletics carnival was held at St Helens. Below is a copy of an email I received from Councillor
Barry Le Fevre who assisted at the event.
‘I've been commentating at the combined Athletics Carnival today and just wanted to pass on that your student leaders who helped the
Primaries were outstanding.
I was in the recording box and it was an absolute pleasure listening and seeing the way Isabella and Kayla organised place-getters but more
importantly encouraged and consoled them in a quiet, respectful way. Their maturity level was extraordinary.
You should be proud of them Anita - I was.’
Well done to the following students who assisted on the day: Mitchell Pfundt, Mason Porter, Noah Carpenter, Zaymon Curtis,
Kayla Collett, Isabella Dix, Bella Stingle, Freya Cubitt and Lily Mead.
It is with a heavy heart that I complete this newsletter, after being informed that Rob McIntyre passed away on Friday. Rob was
a long standing member of our School Association, a coach, a mentor and a friendly, caring adult to many young people in our
community. One of Rob’s favourite sayings was “It takes a village to raise a child” and Rob certainly had a positive impact on many
children over many years in our village. He will be sadly missed.
Please take care over the holiday period. I look forward to working with you all next term.
Kind regards,
Anita Haley

MILKSHAKE FUNDRAISER This term the 6-8 Class Captains have held multiple milkshake days for the Grade 3-10 areas. On these special days milkshakes were sold for $2.50 each with the flavours being vanilla, chocolate, caramel and straw-berry. For the future we plan on having these days on a three weekly basis every term. This means that in term two milkshake day will be held in weeks three, six and nine. For term 1 and 2 we have decided to do-nate our profits to the Ronald McDonald House which provides support to seriously ill children and their families. We would like to thank Chris and Katie Hill from Hilly’s IGA Supermarket for sponsoring our milkshake days and supplying the milk. These days would not be possible without their generosity and thoughtfulness towards our school. We thank them for making this opportunity possible. Sincerely, 6-8 Class Captains
SAVE THE TASMANIAN
DEVIL PROGRAM On the 28th of March Nadeen and Jodie came in to share information about the Tasmanian Devil. We learnt about the facial tumour that has affected 80% of the Tasmanian Devil population. Here is a fact that they shared with us. If a pregnant Tasmanian Devil has the facial tumour the babies won’t get it. The milk that the mother creates for her babies protects them from the disease until they are old enough to leave home and then go off fighting with other devils. When a Tasmanian Devil with the tumour bites another, that devil will gain the face tumour. They are trying to create a cure for when one Tasmanian Devil bites another, they will be cured. The Save the Tassie Devils Program have set up 30 cam-eras from Scottsdale to St Helens. Afterwards Errol the Tasmanian Devil came in. His hands were really furry and his feet were big and fluffy. We had a class photo with a Tassie Devil mask. By Rhiahna , Robyn and Grade 5 students
1/2 CHISHOLM SCIENCE
1/2 Chisholm have planed and conducted a variety of experi-ments in Science this term. Some of the things we have made include grass creatures, slime, seed bombs and wind powered elephants. We particularly enjoyed trying to make cube bubbles.
