A Stewardship Moment  Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 12-13, 2015

St. James asks what our love for Jesus Christ can pos-sibly mean if it does not result in action on behalf of our neighbor. He suggests that faith is demonstrated most acutely in care for the needy, the suffering, and the un-derprivileged. Stewardship includes proclaiming the Good News by putting our faith into action on behalf of others. In what ways have we been willing to make sacrifices and renunciations for the sake of Jesus Christ and our neighbor?

Christ Renews His Parish

SFX Women’s Renewal 2015

Oct. 17-18

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

What is the Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) Women’s Retreat?

The retreat is an opportunity for women of St. Francis Xavier parish to relax, pray, and grow in their relationships with God and others in their faith community. CRHP began in 1969 and has spread to parishes across the country. St. Francis Xavier has of-fered CRHP renewal weekends for over 30 years.

What happens during the CRHP renewal weekend?

During the renewal weekend, retreat organizers share their stories of their personal faith journeys. In addition, you will participate in small group discussions, prayer, scripture readings, one-on-one reconciliation with a priest, and Eucharist. CRHP is not a silent retreat.

Who can attend?

Any Catholic woman 18 and older who is a registered parishioner at St. Francis Xavier may attend.

What is the time commitment?

You will arrive at the parish hall on Saturday morning at 8:30 for a full day of CRHP activities. You will spend the night with the other retreat participants in the parish hall. The program resumes the next morn-ing. The retreat concludes on Sunday afternoon at 4:30.

What is provided? What should I bring? Is there a cost?

All meals, snacks and beverages are provided. You should bring a sleeping bag or bedding and an overnight bag. Cots will be pro-vided, but you may wish to bring an air mattress. Comfortable, casual clothing is recommended. You will be given a Bible and other materials at the retreat. There will be a free will donation.

Need more information?

Thank you for your support of our Blood

Drive. A special thank you for those who wait-ed to donate. We are exploring with LifeShare

how we can make dona ng even less me-consuming. Ini al reports are that we had 29 donors for September. That means that we will receive a $500 grant for educa on! Help us to receive another grant by dona ng Nov. 1. All donors who par cipate will be entered into a contest to win a gi card from Giant Eagle.

Save the Date: Annual Parish Monster Mash Halloween Party for kids of all ages at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, inside the school building. New this year! Bring your used costumes to donate for charity.

Art Show Results Thank you to all of our talented parishioners who participated in our first art show last month. We had a wonderful time admiring all of the works submitted. Our judges, Brent Dansby, a former art director who now teaches art in an Akron high school, and Mike Roth, a senior at the Cleveland Institute of Art, were quite complimentary of your talent! At our instruction, they picked their top three:

Bill Beal’s “Faithfully Yours” watercolor Diane Olesinski’s “My Heart is Ready Jesus”

photograph Anitra Redlefsen’s “The Point of No Return”

mixed-media box

We asked parishioners to vote for their favorite. The top vote-getter was “Madonna” by Mary Ann Peto. See future bulletins for next steps and pictures of the winners.

Adults Desiring to be Confirmed Have you thought about receiving the Sacra-ment of Confirmation? For one reason or anoth-er, you may have not been confirmed earlier in your faith journey. A faith formation program will be held on Sunday mornings to help prepare adults to be confirmed. Alive in the Spirit is a program to explore the Sacrament of Confirmation and include immedi-ate preparation for receiving the sacrament in No-vember when Bishop Roger Gries comes to our parish. Meetings will be on each of the five Sun-day mornings: Sept. 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 11 a.m. in the parish office. Please contact Fr. Thom for information and to register ([email protected]).

Symbolon is coming! We might be familiar with different aspects of the Cath-olic faith. But how does it all fit together? And what differ-ence does it make for our lives? Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained is an adult educa on program that opens up the “big picture” of the Catholic faith in a way that helps us know it, live it and ar culate it to others. Through beau fully cra -ed teaching and state-of-the-art video filmed on loca on in Rome, the Holy Land, Calcu a and in the Augus ne Ins tute studios in Denver, a comprehensive explana on of the Catho-

lic faith is presented. Fr. Thom will facilitate a discussion of the video presen-ta ons. The program will be divided into five weekly ses-sions. The first unit will begin Monday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. and be repeated Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 8:30 a.m. All are invited to par cipate in Symbolon— Part I: Know-ing the Faith journeys through the core teachings of the Cath-olic Church.

Confirmation We have had a great group of youth preparing for confirmation and are very proud of our stu-dents and their commitment and enthusiasm toward their faith. Please see upcoming important dates: Session #5 — Sept. 14, 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Xavier Room Session #6 — Oct. 11, 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Xavier Room Practice — Oct. 25, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., with Sponsor in the Church Confirmation — Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. NOTE: All paperwork must be submitted by Session #6 or you may not be confirmed.

SAVE the DATE: Come join us in the Sanctuary as we pray the Patrio c Rosary on Monday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church. The Patrio c Rosary is a powerful prayer for the consecra on of our na on to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It contains medita ons from our Founding Fathers and prayers for our Holy Father, bishops, priests, religious, the president, the Supreme Court, the Senate, the House of Representa-

ves, the governors and each of the 50 states. We will be especially praying for safe travels for our Holy Father, Pope Francis, as he visits

the United States later this month. Prayer booklets will be provided. Call Judy Friedrich at 330-725-4265 or Sally Pap at 330-697-3177 with any ques ons.

As men oned at Mass over the last few weeks and as you may read in the next edi on of the Navigator newsle er, a num-ber of town hall mee ngs have been scheduled so that you might offer input for our ac vity at the parish over the next five to 10 years. It was five years ago that the surveys and town hall gathering helped me to set a course in priori zing our work at the parish and school. Rather than simply assume we should con nue in the same vein, I would like to get your thoughts on where you want to see your parish in the future. I am not simply talking about buildings, but also personnel and parish ministries and programs. Please check to see if one of these mes would work for you. Please pray and reflect on what we do well here at St. Francis Xavier and where we could improve. Not every parish can do everything. But if there is enough interest and enough people who would like to see a dream move from a vision to a reality, we should consider it as a priority. The last six years have been focused on the con nual repairs to our facili es, especially parking, roofs, boilers, win-dows and ligh ng. I have tried to order these projects based on available funds, the dura on the projects would take and how we can address them in a way that would not undo or ruin an already completed project. I know it has been confusing and messy at mes, but we have a safer, more efficient and welcom-ing physical plant. This would not have been possible without the pa ence of all who work and pray here, as well as the help of the Buildings and Grounds commi ee. We also focused in becoming more welcoming and more a en ve to the needs of children and families and those in need. Members of the Parish and Finance Councils, Buildings and Grounds and Stewardship commi ees will be present to help to listen and take notes at these town hall mee ngs. They will help me to process what is shared at the mee ngs and in the sur-veys. The first round of the survey will go out here in the bulle-

n for those of you who worship pre y regularly. Secondly, it

will be pushed out in the Navigator and on our website to our en re membership. If further consulta on is needed to make clarifica ons for the course of ac on, more surveys and mee ngs may follow, but, at any rate, this will get the conversa-

on moving forward. If you would like to email me directly or meet briefly to discuss concerns, I would welcome that too! One of the projects I have been pu ng off is the replace-ment of the rectory windows. The wood sashes are the originals with the house, and the storm windows really don’t do too much. About a third of all the windows were broken and would not stay open without a wood dowel. Last week they worked on the priest residence, and this week they will do the offices on the first floor. There may be some disrup on for a day or two during office hours for Fr. Chris, Jennifer Webb, Sue Brooks, Donna McEwen, Ryan Neal, Andrew Sabol, Paul Koopman and myself. The main office level, where the secretaries work, will not be disrupted. The new installa on will save on hea ng and cooling in the years ahead. They also will be much easier to use and to keep clean, not to men on look be er. As the dirt gets graded and seeded around the new learn-ing center on the east side of the gymnasium, please do not get off the driveway into the mud….you will sink and make a mess. Also, please stay on the sidewalk and do not walk through it either. (If you see someone a emp ng this, give them a dirty look for me!) The west ves bule con nues to move slowly for-ward. Hopefully it will be usable by the me the fall storms begin to hail in the colder air of November. Have a great week! Fr. Tony
