1 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 3, 2014 Stewardship Reflection Is 55: 1-3; Ps 145: 8-9, 15-18; Rom 8: 35, 37-39; Mt 14: 13-21

Blessed Mother Teresa, one of the great examples in our time of what it is to be Catholic and what it is to be a good steward, said “Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life. Night and day He is there for us. If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist; come back to that Adoration.” It is appropriate for us to remember that Eucharist means thanksgiving in Greek for it was Christ’s ideal sacrifice for each of us.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1336): “The first announcement of the

Eucharist divided the disciples, just as the announcement of the Passion scandalized them: ‘This

is a hard saying; who can listen to it?’ The Eucharist and the Cross are stumbling blocks. It is

the same mystery and it never ceases to be a division. “Will you also go away?’ The Lord’s

question echoes through the ages, as a loving invitation to discover that only He has the ‘words

of eternal life’ and that to receive in faith the gift of the Eucharist is to receive the Lord Himself.”

The first reading from the prophetic Book of Isaiah, although written centuries before the birth of Christ,

describes the Eucharist perfectly. “All you who are thirsty, come to the water…come receive grain and eat…I will

renew with you the everlasting covenant.” God also says in this reading, “Heed me and you shall eat well.” We

must listen to the Lord, and we must listen carefully. As great a gift as the Eucharist is, it is our perception and

our reaction to it that makes it so incredible. It is up to us to realize the power of communion every time we

receive it, and it is completely up to us to take that gift and to spread it through love and stewardship.

We are assured in the first reading that God will feed us spiritually and that there is always enough to meet our

needs. St. Paul’s letter to the Romans speaks eloquently of the immeasurable nature of God’s love, how, if we are

open and receptive to this endless love, nothing, absolutely nothing can keep us from union with the Lord. “For I am

convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor

powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus

our Lord.”

Jesus was fond of teaching with parables, but He may have taught more effectively with His actions. The Gospel

reading from Matthew relates one of His miracles, one of those stories with which each of us is very familiar. Chapter

14 from the Book of Matthew is replete with amazing tales. It begins, sadly, with the death of John the Baptist. Upon

hearing of this, the Lord is saddened and goes off by Himself in a boat. However, a huge crowd gathers on the shore,

and, moved by compassion, He begins to move among them and heal the sick. It was late in the day and the

disciples were concerned about how all these people were going to eat. The miracle Jesus then performed follows

exactly the message of the first two readings: that the Lord will, and can provide, and that there is always enough

for everyone.

The verses in today’s Gospel are often titled “Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand.” As they are wont to do, scholars and historians have examined this, which actually states, “Those who ate were five thousand men, not counting women and children.” Some have concluded that there may have been double that number or more. Nevertheless, the point is not the number fed; the reality is that Jesus is able to feed everyone who wishes to eat of the Bread of Life. The Lord has fed literally billions through the Eucharist. The Lord has resources beyond our wildest imaginations. We must nonetheless seek those resources through Him. Practicing stewardship recognizes that, and it leads us to lives of holiness, and to the “everlasting covenant” mentioned in the first reading.

Question of the week: Acting with courage

La Bendita madre Teresa, una de las gran ejemplos de nuestro tiempo de lo que es ser Católico y lo que es ser un buen mayordomo, dijo “Jesús mismo se ha hecho el Pan de Vida para darnos vida. De noche y día el está con nosotros. Si realmente deseas crecer en amor, vuelve a la Eucaristía; vuelve al Santísimo.” Es apropiado que recordemos que Eucaristía quiere decir acción de gracias en griego pues fue el sacrificio ideal de Cristo por cada uno de nosotros. De acuerdo con el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (#1336): “el primer anuncio de la Eucaristía dividido entre los discípulos, así como el anuncio de la Pasión los escandalizo: ‘ Este es un dicho duro; quien lo escuchara?’ La Eucaristía y la Cruz son piedras de tropiezo. Es el mismo misterio que nunca deja de ser una división. “También tú te marcharas?’ La pregunta del Señor hace eco a través de los tiempos, como una invitación amorosa al descubrir que solo El tiene las “palabras de vida eterna y que para recibir con fe el regalos de la Eucaristía es recibir al Señor mismo.” La primera lectura del libro del profeta Isaías, aunque fue escrito siglos antes del nacimiento de Jesús, describe la Eucaristía perfectamente. “Todos quienenes están sedientos, vengan al agua…vengan a recibir el grano y comer…yo los renovare con un pacto eterno.” Dios también dice en esta lectura, “escúchenme todos y comerán bien.” Debemos escuchar al Señor, y debemos escucharlo con atención. Como un gran regalo es la Eucaristía, y nuestra percepción y nuestra reacción a ella que la hace tan increíble. Depende de nosotros darnos cuenta del poder de la comunión cada vez que la recibimos, y depende de nosotros completamente tomar ese regalo y compartirlo por medio de amor y mayordomía. En la primera lectura se nos asegura que Dios nos alimentara espiritualmente y que siempre habrá suficiente para nuestras necesidades. La carta de San Pablo a los Romanos habla elocuentemente de la naturaleza inmensurable del amor de Dios, y como, si estamos dispuestos y receptivos a este inmenso amor, nada, absolutamente nada puede impedirnos unión con el Señor. “Porque estoy convencido que ni muerte, ni vida, ni ángeles, ni principalidades, ni cosas presentes ni futuras, ni poder, ni altura, ni profundidad, ni cualquier otra cosa creada podrá separarnos del amor de Dios en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor.” A Jesús le gustaba enseñar en parábolas, pero El pudo haber enseñado más efectivamente con sus acciones. La lectura del evangelio de Mateo nos cuenta de uno de Sus milagros, una de esas historias con las que estamos muy familiarizados. El capítulo 14 del libro de Mateo está repleto de estas historias. Comienza, tristemente, con la muerte de Juan Bautista. Al escuchar esto, el Señor se entristece y se va solo en un barco. Sin embargo, una enorme muchedumbre se reúne en la orilla, y, conmovido por compasión, comienza a caminar entre ellos y sanar a los enfermos. Esto fue tarde en el día y los discípulos se preocuparon lo que comería esta gente. El milagro que Jesús hiso sigue exactamente el mensaje de las primeras dos lecturas: que el Señor, puede proporcionar y que siempre habrá suficiente para todos. Los versos del Evangelio de hoy a menudo son titulados “Jesús da de comer a cinco mil.” Como seguido suelen hacer, los eruditos e historiadores han examinado esto, que actualmente afirma, “Esos que comieron fueron cinco mil hombres, no contando mujeres y niños.” Algunos han concluido que debe haber habido doble del número o más. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION registrations will be on Tuesdays only, 10:00am to 5:00pm, from July 22 to August 12 in the church office. There will be only one Sunday Registration on August 10 after all masses. Information packets will be mailed to families registered in our church data base. Bring your completed paperwork with you. If you need a packet you may pick one up on any of those days. Please be prepared to pay your total fees at the time of registration.

Respect Heal the Pain of Abortion - Abortion affects the mother and kills the child, yes, but they are not the only ones affected. This death and the heartbreak of it also touches the father, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings and each grieves in different ways and at different times. Rachel's Vineyard weekend retreats are a beautiful opportunity for any woman or man who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of an abortion. We share spiritual exercises, which help work through repressed grief and anger and many rituals to help grieve the loss of the unborn child and accept God's forgiveness. The retreat is presented in the Catholic tradition. Weekend retreats are coming up soon in English, Sept. 5-7,2014 and Spanish, Oct. 24-26, 2014. Who are the people that we, as Stephen Ministers, serve in our parish? We serve our brothers and sisters who need our help. The needs vary greatly, from an elderly person who is shut in, isolated, and lonely, to the young one who is feeling harassed and stressed with too many issues in his/her life. The situation may stem from a serious illness or injury or death of a love one, or questions and issues related to one’s own health or death. We are open to most situations. If you are hurting in some way...we care, and want to help! Each of us experience times when we are lonely, grieving, sad, hurting, and in need of care. At such times we find comfort through others who reach out to help. This is what Stephen Ministers do!! We are not counselors or therapists, but we are caring, hopeful parishioners who believe in the healing power of God working through us to make a difference in your life. Each Stephen Minister has some training (50 plus hours) and has developed some useful skills in preparing for this ministry. Some of the ways in which we help are: Offering Christian friendship and love. Providing a strong support system for you. Listening patiently and sympathetically. Praying for and with you. Being “there for you” through your difficult, stressful time.

We will help you “sort things out” and “make sense of things” that frustrate, anger, and make you sad, without intruding in your life.
