Parish Mission Statement We, the parish family of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church welcome all, young and old, active or inactive, committed
or alienated, to enrich their lives by joining and participating in our faith community. We seek to reflect the light of Jesus
Christ by reaching out to serve all, and by sharing our joy and hope, as we continue our faith journey. May our lives,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, and nourished by the Eucharist, bear witness to our love for neighbors near and far.
ST. ANTHONY PARISH COHASSET, MA
Dear Parishioners
There is a popular hymn: “They will know we are Christians
by our love…”. On Wednesday last they knew we were
Christians by the ashes marked on our foreheads as we entered
our Lenten journey in a very visible way Today, on this First
Sunday of Lent, we are presented with Luke’s account of the
reason for our forty day experience of prayer, fasting and
penance. Luke’s gospel reminds us of the trials willingly faced by
Jesus before he began his messianic mission. This trial leaves
him victorious and prepares him to proclaim the gospel of the
kingdom of God. Luke explains that Jesus, filled with the Holy
Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led into the desert for
forty days to be tempted by the devil. During these days Jesus
confronts the devil, unmasks his temptations and conquers him.
As we read in the Preface for this First Sunday of Lent: By
abstaining forty days from earthly food, he consecrated through
his fast the pattern of our Lenten observance and, by overturning
all the snares of the ancient serpent, taught us to cast out the
leaven of malice, so that celebrating worthily the Paschal
Mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast.”
The three temptations with which the devil confronted Jesus most
likely represent the challenges and struggles that Jesus had to
face throughout his entire ministry.
The first temptation by the devil is the challenge for Jesus to
turn the stones into bread. It is prefaced by “if…” if you are the
Son of God…”. The implication is that Jesus is not who he
claims to be. In the second temptation the devil offers Jesus
power and glory over all the world. If Jesus worships the devil,
the world would be his. The allure is considerable, but Jesus
chooses to serve God over the devil. The final temptation is a
challenge to prove that Jesus is the Son of God by throwing
himself off the parapet of the Temple knowing that legions of
angels will save him and he will survive unharmed. Again Jesus
refuses such a proposal and he will not do anything to prove his
messiahship. Recognizing Jesus as the Son of God can be
achieved only through faith. With this understanding of the
journey of Lent in imitation of the forty days Jesus spent in the
desert, we can choose the best way through prayer, fasting or
penance to prepare ourselves for the Passion and death of Jesus to
be followed by his glorious Resurrection.
Sincerely,
Fr John R. Mulvehill

Grades 1-6
We will once again be participating in the Catholic Relief
Services (CRS) Rice Bowl program. During Lent, which begins
on Wednesday 3/6, CRS Rice Bowl invites you, your family and
community to journey together to reach out beyond ourselves to
encounter the needs of all. Starting in February we will be
distributing Rice Bowls, one for each family. We ask you to
consider $1 per day for the 40 days of lent. This would feed one
family for a month or 2 years of seed for a farmer or one
emergency kit for refugees. We will collect them at the end of
lent.
Classes as usual this week.

Bingo night was a huge success. The
youth group is extremely thankful for
such a great turn out. What I like about
our faith and this parish is the turn out.
What I mean is how much we all
support one another. The turn out is our
involvement in the parish and our faith. Looking from the
outside in I am always amazed to see so many people involved
in so many aspects of our faith. You are all truly inspiring.
The youth group understands the importance of being
involved. When the parish asks for our help whether it is
handing out the envelopes for the cardinals appeal or
removing the church missalette and installing the new ones.
Installing the bulletin inserts. We will always answer the call.
We greatly appreciate the support of the parishioners and all
the staff of Saint Anthony's. This is done with great pride and
admiration for all of you. I believe what we see in you is what
we bring to Honduras. The community we are working with
there has doubled in size since the beginning of building the
church. Being involved makes a difference in so many lives.
We are thankful for our involvement in this beautiful faith
and parish.
