Mission Statement: To offer outstanding programs and services that provide for the physical, social and emotional
needs of our older adults by assisting them to lead independent, stimulating and self-reliant lives as members of the
community.
In continuing pandemic fashion, Cohasset Elder Affairs held a drive by Holiday Festival on December 8. Partici-
pants were encouraged to drop off a donation for Toy’s for Tots. In return, they received a bag of holiday goodies
baked in the Willcutt Commons commercial kitchen. Pictures clockwise from top left: Bags of holiday treats
lined the tables in the Willcutt dining room. Senator Patrick O’Connor joined the staff during the Toys for Tot’s
Drive. Staff members dressed in seasonal outfits posed with Senator O’Connor. While the building is still closed
to the public, a line of stockings hung by the fire at Willcutt provides a morale booster to the CEA staff.

Greetings,
Well, we made it to 2021! The month of January brings with it hopes and expecta-
tions for an improved year. Just like many of you, here at Willcutt Commons, we’ve
made a few New Year’s resolutions.
Every year, we review our Elder Affairs mission statement:
To offer outstanding programs and services that provide for the physical, social and emotional needs of our
older adults by assisting them to lead independent, stimulating and self-reliant lives as members of the
community.
As we look forward, we develop plans and objectives designed to support this mission. Our goals
over 2021 and beyond are to:
Grow our use of technology to reach out to older adults by creating our own dedicated
webpage, providing “on-demand“ programming, and by increasing our online and social media
presence.
Advance our marketing capabilities to reach more isolated and vulnerable older adults as well
as to increase visibility to newly minted seniors, with programming that appeals to all.
Expand programming by offering more adult learning programs, making programming availa-
ble outside of normal business hours, and by continuing to use Zoom beyond the pandemic, as
applicable.
Increase the use of Willcutt Commons by exploring an adaptation of the living room lounge
into a conversation-friendly cafe area. We’d like to create a casual space that will help to build ca-
maraderie, strengthen friendships, and reduce isolation. While our current living room is lovely,
we envision a place where folks are comfortable sitting in groups sharing coffee and conversation
throughout the day, where anyone can pull up a chair and enjoy reading a book or a newspaper.
Pursue National Accreditation by joining the 3% of Senior Centers in the country who attain
accreditation with guidance from the National Councils on Aging (NCOA). This will ensure our
policies and procedures meet the highest standards and our programs and services are delivered in
the most effective and efficient way.
As you may imagine, we have a lot of work ahead of us! While these goals may be lofty, I’m sure
you’ll agree they’re worthwhile. I encourage your input and feedback. We will be looking for com-
mittee members to join with us to help attain these goals as we focus on surpassing the current
high standards of our center, while making Willcutt Commons a home-away-from-home for older
citizens in our town.
I wish you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!
Live, Laugh and Learn at Willcutt Commons,
Nancy Lafauce, Director

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM EMAIL AND TEXTING PHISHING ATTACKS
Computer scams continue to increase. Even if you use security software, questionable emails and text mes-
sages may come through and some of them look very realistic! Here are some tips for protecting yourself:
Do not open any messages that come from an unfamiliar source. If you open a suspicious message, de-
lete it. Do not click on links or call numbers provided in the message. Be wary of opening attachments.
Delete email and text messages that ask you to confirm or provide personal information (credit card and bank ac-
count numbers, passwords, etc.). Legitimate companies do not ask for this information via email or text.
If you are concerned about your account or need to reach an organization that you do business with, call the num-
ber on your financial statements or on the back of your credit card. Do not call the telephone number that the call-
er or spoof provides you!
If you think you might have downloaded malware from a scam tech support site, do not panic. Update or down-
load legitimate security software and scan your computer. Change any passwords you may have given out. If you
use those passwords for other accounts, change those too. If you paid for a bogus service with a credit card, dis-
pute the transactions with your credit card provider. Check your statements for any other charges you did not
make and dispute those as well.
SOUTH SHORE COMMUNITY ACTION COUNCIL FUEL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The fuel assistance program for our area is administered by South Shore Community Action Council. The program
provides low income households with help paying their heating bills and runs from November 1, 2020 through April
30, 2021.
Eligibility is based on gross income, household size and vulnerability to heating costs (see chart below). Fuel assistance
can help with the cost of your primary heat source. In addition, if you live in nonsubsidized housing and heat is not
included in your rent, you may receive assistance for a portion of the rent. Please call Diane Picot for confidential as-
sistance with the application process at 781-383-9112.

PROPERTY TAX DEFERRAL PROGRAM
Many retired homeowners feel house-rich and income-poor. Property taxes constitute a serious financial burden,
which can even force the sale of the home. Cohasset offers a tax deferral program, which enables owners to defer
payment of up to 100% of annual property taxes. Deferred taxes accumulate with simple interest at 4% as a lien on
the property until it is sold or upon the death of the owner. The total amount of such taxes due, plus interest, shall
not exceed 50% of the owner’s proportional share of the full and fair cash value of such real property. Please check
with the Cohasset Assessor’s office regarding eligibility. 781-383-4100.

How to Get Access to the Internet for
Low-Income Older Adults
Not everyone has access to the internet – What can be
done? All telecommunication companies are required to
provide access to the internet via a program that subsidiz-
es low-income families. These programs offer internet
services at a rate of $9.95 per month. Families must
demonstrate that they meet income requirements under
the Lifeline Program. To learn more about the Lifeline

THANK YOU!
Our sincere thanks to Lynne Buckley, Volunteer Shine Coun-
selor for her help during the recent Medicare Open Enroll-
ment Period. Open enrollment was especially busy this year
and with the added challenge that appointments had to be
held virtually. Thank you, Lynne, for the generous donation
of your time and knowledge as you helped older adults navi-
gate what can be a difficult process.

Recipe from Anna’s Kitchen
Mushroom Tart
RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED
Preheat oven to 375.
Roll out one sheet of pastry and cut into four rounds about four inches in diameter each. Using a knife, score a
smaller circle on the inside of each round, one inch from the edge. (Don’t cut all the way through the dough.)
In heated skillet, melt butter and add pancetta, sauté for 3-4 minutes until pancetta is crisp. Add mushrooms and
cook 5 minutes or until mushrooms release their liquid and it evaporates. Season mixture with salt and pepper to
taste.
Divide the mushroom mixture and place a quarter of it in the center of each round, inside the scored circle. Sprin-
kle with chopped parsley and cheese.
Brush the edge of the tart with beaten egg.
Bake 15-18 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
1 small box assorted mushrooms
1 package puff pastry
1 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp pancetta, finely chopped
2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 egg beaten
2 Tbsp parsley, minced
