ST. ANTHONY PARISH COHASSET, MA

Dear Parishioners

As we observe Ash Wednesday this week we enter into

another Lenten period in our lives. During the following forty

days we prepare through prayer and sacrifice for the glorious

feast of Easter. Last year as we approached Ash Wednesday

Pope Francis wrote: "Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to

the certain goal of Easter, Christ's victory over death. This

season urgently calls us to conversion. Lent is the favorable

season for renewing our encounter with Christ who lives in his

Word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor. Once again Lent

come to make its prophetic appeal to remind us that it is

possible to create something new within ourselves and around

us. At the basis of everything is the Word of God which during

this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply. Let

us find inspiration in God’s Word, for it is a key to

understanding what we need to do in order to attain true

happiness and eternal life. It exhorts us to true conversion. Let

us not waste this season of Lent, so favorable a time for

conversion.”

Pope Francis, quoting from the Old Testament prophet Joel

says: return to me with all your heart.” With its invitation to

conversion, Lent comes providentially to awaken us, to rouse us

from our sleep, from the risk of moving forward by doing

nothing. The exhortation which the Lord addresses to us

through the prophet Joel is strong and clear. Why must we

return to God? Because something is not right in us, not right in

society, not right in the Church, and we need to change and give

it a new direction. And this is called needing to convert.

The Pope points our that Lent reminds us that it is possible to

create something new within ourselves and around us simply

because God is faithful, always faithful, for God cannot deny

himself. God continues to be rich in goodness and mercy and

God is always ready to forgive and start afresh. With this filial

confidence, the Pope says let us set out on the journey.

And so the Lenten journey begins on Ash Wednesday with

the sign of the cross on our foreheads as a reminder to all that

this day begins a special time in our lives, a time to offer

prayers, to sacrifice in some way and to make an extra effort to

walk closely in the footsteps of the Lord.

Sincerely,

Fr John R. Mulvehill

Living our Faith Together In the Gospel today, Jesus reminds us that we are known by the

fruits of our generosity. In opening the doors of our hearts to this

season of Lent, may we consider supporting those who turn to the

Church for assistance, through life-changing ministries such as

Addiction Recovery Services or the Faith Community Nursing

program. Your gift to the 2019 Catholic Appeal provides half

of the funding for many important programs that enrich

parish life, our Catholic schools, and the lives of many. Every

gift has an immediate impact in our parish communities.

Please find more information about this life-changing work in the

envelope in your pew or visit our website at

bostoncatholicappeal.org to view our latest video about the

Appeal. Thank you!

Grades 1-6

We will once again be participating in the Catholic Relief

Services (CRS) Rice Bowl program. During Lent, which begins

on Wednesday 3/6, CRS Rice Bowl invites you, your family and

community to journey together to reach out beyond ourselves to

encounter the needs of all. Starting in February we will be

distributing Rice Bowls, one for each family. We ask you to

consider $1 per day for the 40 days of lent. This would feed one

family for a month or 2 years of seed for a farmer or one

emergency kit for refugees. We will collect them at the end of

lent.

Lent starts Wednesday March 6th with Ash Wednesday. There

will be a ceremony and ash distribution on Wednesday 3/6 at 4

pm.

There will be a Family Mass the weekend of 3/10 at 9:30.

While we prepare for the second trip to

Honduras at the end of June we begin to

understand the importance of

remembering the purpose of our

mission. Life has a way of taking us over

and we lose sight of what is truly

important. This is why I love the season of lent. We begin with

a simple message on Ash Wednesday of humbling ourselves

and reflect on what is important. We seek forgiveness and we

strive to renew our commitment to our faith and in each

other. We often hear things are not the same. Life is too busy.

The world is in turmoil. The truth is this has always been the

case. Each Sunday each of us has the opportunity to take an

hour to come together and reflect upon our past week and the

week ahead. Lent provides us the opportunity each day to

reflect on what is important in our lives. We empower

ourselves and each other by giving up small things and more

importantly we decide to do something more for each other.

This is the beauty of our mission. Each day on the mission

after prayer and reflection we say these simple words, "keep

coming back" This can mean so many different things. The

truth is we all have Jesus who wants us to keep coming back.
