SALVATION IN DAILY LIFEThis Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family,

which comes on the first Sunday after ChristmasDay. Today's feast celebrates how the humanity ofJesus (including his entirefamily life) has broughtsaving significance into thedaily rhythms of our humanfamily life.

The scriptures offerinstruction and encourage-ment on how to share-within our families, parishfamilies, and the wider hu-man family-the love thatGod shares with us in Je-sus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colos-sians encourage us to reflect divine love and thusfind holiness in all our human relationships. FEAST OF FAITH ProcessionsWhy does the liturgy begin with a procession?

It is not just a practical matter of getting the ministersof the liturgy from the sacristy to the sanctuary. Theprocession is a powerful sign of who we are as Chris-tian people. We are not static, staying in one place. Weare going somewhere. Our procession leads us to thealtar, sign of Christ's presence in our midst. We move,we process, because we recognize our need for whatChrist is preparing for us atthat table. We go forwardeagerly, because we are hungry for that heavenly food.

This procession is an orderly one: servers, dea-con, priest presider. Each is set apart by distinctive ves-ture: albs for the altar servers, dalmatic for the deacon,chasuble for the priest. The procession is an image ofthe hierarchical structure of the Churc,h. On a deeperlevel it is an image of unity in diversity. We are all on ajourney to the heavenly city, but each of us is clothedwith different gifts. We all receive the call to service,but not in the same way.
