SUNDAY THOUGHT

Mark 1:14-20

We find Jesus calling His first disciples in our Gospel reading this Sunday. God in His infinite creativity is still calling men and women to follow Him. He has called you and me to know Him and to serve Him in a way that is uniquely our own way of love and service. We serve Him in our strengths and we serve Him also in our many weaknesses. We should not be surprised that we are called to follow Jesus even in our weakness. God always chooses the weak and broken to confound the haughty and proud. If we simply try to be faithful to God in the little things of life, we will find that we will be gradually transformed over time. Jesus will form us into disciples capable of making a difference in the world we are a part of, just like the first group of disciples. God surrounds us with His love. He has filled us with His Holy Spirit and He has incorporated us into the one Body of His Son in the Church. Let us joyfully take up our calling to follow Him.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 21, 2018

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS

Saint Clement of Ohrid, Bishop (c830-916)

Clement came from Ohrid, present day Okhrida in Macedonia, and probably met the brother-saints Cyril and Methodius, while he was a monk. Clement joined the brothers in their missions to the people of Moravia and Pannonia and helped them in their efforts to educate the Slavic peoples using the Glagolitic script Cyril had devised. Upon Methodius’ death in 885, his disciples, Clement among them, were ejected from Moravia. Some were enslaved; Clement and four others were able to go to the neighboring Bulgarian kingdom. The Bulgarian king, Boris I, in an effort to stem the influence of Byzantine culture, asked Clement to establish a school at Ohrid where he would teach the Cyrillic script. Clement and his fellow teacher, Nahum, instructed over 3,000 men, many of whom went on to become priests, deacons, and lay readers throughout the Bulgarian kingdom. The school essentially created the first Bulgarian clergy. Saint Clement was the first to write extensively in the Slavonic language, and he did it prolifically, composing some fifty books. Tradition holds that he was the first Slavonic bishop of Macedonia, with Nahum as his successor. Saint Clement is remembered as one of the Seven Apostles of Bulgaria, the patron of Macedonia, and a founding father of Slavonic education. He is venerated by both the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Church. He died on July 27, 916 at Ohrid and July 27th is celebrated as his feast day in both Churches.

Plan to attend the Mass for Life on January 22, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. This Mass is celebrated on the 45th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Many who are attending the March for Life in Washington DC on Friday, January 19, will have the opportunity to participate within our diocese also this year. A Rosary for Life will follow the Mass. Please contact Peggy Gerovac at 216-334-2965 or [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY

Marks of the Church: The Marks of the Church are the four characteristics of the Church — One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. There is only One Church. The Church is Holy because Christ is Holy. The Church is catholic, meaning for all people. The Church is apostolic because it is rooted in the Tradition of the Apostles.

MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS

Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Begin your conversation with God with this question: Question: Andrew and Simon Peter left their boat and

followed Jesus? What do you need to leave behind to

follow Jesus?

EVANGELIZATION TIP

Jesus said, “Come follow me.” Say that to a friend who has been away from the Church as you come to Mass.

HELP IS NEEDED

HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW…

Did you know that the word Alleluia means “Praise the Lord.” We use this word throughout the liturgical prayer of the Church, but especially before the Gospel. We praise God for what we are about to hear.

WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY

Pray for the end of all activity that disrespects the dignity and sanctity of human life.

PRE-CANA TEAM

Pre-Cana is a team of married couples that enjoy sharing their life experiences with each other as friends and with engaged couples intending to receive the Sacrament of Marriage. St. Anthony of Padua Parish hosts a Pre-Cana Day once a year. This year Pre-Cana Day will be held on February 25. Team members fill different roles from presenting a talk, leading a discussion and helping with logistics and setting up. Pre-Cana is one way the Church strives to help engaged couples succeed in marriage and it strengthens the married couple as well. If you are interested in being a member of the Pre-Cana team, please contact Randy Harris at 440-842-2666 or [email protected].

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY “To maintain a joyful family requires much from both the parents and the children. Each member of the family has to become, in a special way, the servant of the others.” — St. John Paul II

WEEKLY MASS REMINDER

At Mass, the sacrifice of Calvary is made present to us. Stay focused and realize that you are experiencing something special.

PARISH GROUP OF THE WEEK

The Prayer Chain is a group of parishioners dedicated to praying for the needs of parishioners or of anyone in need of prayer. Intentions are passed through a phone chain to each member. For more information, or to join please call the rectory for the name and number of the person to contact.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA

Stop by the Lighthouse Media display in the hallway off of the Church gathering area and check out the selection of CDs. The CDs are great to listen to while driving in your car. This is a great way to grow spirituality and gain new insights into our Catholic Faith.

LATIN AMERICAN COLLECTION

The Latin American Collection will take place on 27-

28 January 2018. This is the only appeal made by the Diocesan Mission Office for the Cleveland Latin American Mission in El Salvador. It is the main support for two diocesan priests who work in the two parishes served by our Mission Office. This appeal also makes a contribution to the Collection for the Church in Latin America that is managed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and benefits projects and the formation of seminarians, religious and lay leaders in 23 countries across Latin America. Please be generous.

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER

“The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.” — Pope Emeritus Benedict XV
