last year in Orlando.

2013 Facts & Figures:

Dear SSON Community Member,

We'd like to thank you again for being part of – and helping to create – anothersuccessful Shared Services & Outsourcing Week in Orlando this past March.

With the feedback from attendees now collated and analyzed, the SSON team and Iare delighted to report, that by all accounts, the 2013 event raised the bar onceagain. Not only did we welcome back industry friends and long-time customers forour 17th show, but we also hosted over 50% new attendees this year fromcompanies just starting their shared services journey.

It was brilliant to witness the positive and truly moving advancements shaping ourindustry and centers across the globe. In just a few years, our community hasmorphed from a cost-cutting transactional machine to a value-added arm and nowto an integrated partner servicing the bottom-line needs of the enterprise at large. Our SSOs are providing the intelligent information, insight and analysis to positionour companies for success in a competitive, agile and complex regulatory world.

This Post-Show Report is designed to provide you with a summary of the facts, themes, learning, future trends – as well as the fun – that came out of SSO Week2013. [Perhaps it was this year’s Big Speaker, Paul DePodesta’s engagingpresentation, during which we were given lessons from Major League Baseball andMoneyball (and who can forget his anecdote, ‘I really want that house…’?) or SamPoston’s touching closing speech on Shared Services as an industry, celebrating hisfinal year chairing the event?

In my 8 years working on the Shared Services portfolio, this year’s show held a trulyspecial place for me – not just because of the successful introduction of theProcurement & IT Summits or the Vertical and Functional roundtable/forum formats, but also on a more personal note, because it was the last show I will work on forSSON for the next year.

Thank you for all you have done, all you are doing and all you will do in the future.Although I will be taking leave from SSON and the business for the next fewmonths, I will certainly be back in the future - and I look forward to our continuedwork together.

In the meantime, I have the pleasure of introducing SSON’s newest team member,Heather King, who will be looking after the 2014, North American Shared Services& Outsourcing Week. Heather has worked in a variety of industries both in the USand abroad, including education, media and events. Before joining SSON asDivisional Director for North America, she produced large scale events for one of thelargest conference companies in the world – so you will be in good hands! She willbe in touch soon to begin the production of our next show.

Here’s to a successful 2014 and beyond! Best wishes and thanks again for yoursupport.

Best Regards,

Naomi Secor SSON

SSON was delighted to host Paul DePodesta, who took to the main stage to give ourattendees a lesson of how to score a home run in data. Paul has made a career ofevaluating, measuring and assigning value to talent. Prior to joining the Dodgers in2004, DePodesta served as Assistant General Manager of the Oakland Athletics from1999 to 2003 - a tenure during which the A’s tied for the best winning percentage inbaseball (392- 255).

At the time of his hire, Oakland was one of the worst teams in the league, coming off of 6losing seasons while posting one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Entrenched in ingrainedthinking and outdated systems, the stagnant team needed the unique management andcreative approach that A’s GM Billy Beane and DePodesta brought to the table.

Michael Lewis documented the A’s remarkable success - despite a shoestring budget -under the Beane/DePodesta team in his New York Times best-seller Moneyball: TheArt of Winning an Unfair Game.

In DePodesta's first season as Oakland’sAssistant G.M., the Athletics enjoyed their firstwinning season in seven years and began a run of four consecutive playoff appearances, including three American League West Division Titles. His work has been recognized byvarious publications, including Fortune, who named him one of the Top 10 innovatorsunder 40.

Mickey Mantle once said, “It’s unbelievable how much you don’t know about the gameyou’ve been playing all your life.”

This quote is a perfect way to describe how crucial the generation and interpretation ofbusiness intelligence is now for Shared Services and BPO partnerships globally, and PaulDePodesta’s engaging presentation (the highest-rated of all sessions!) showcased thelessons we should be taking away from MLB and Moneyball.
