Message from the Vice President

As slow March and April ticked by, May seemed to pass with the blink of an eye!

I hope everyone has stayed safe and healthy during these confus-ing times. As all of you know our public monthly meeting for May was can-celed due to the Covid-19 man-dates. We are now entering our summer break and will resume public meetings in September. We as a board are continuing to work with attorneys to sort through past documents and processes to get a solid understanding of exact-ly where Sea Pines legally stands in regard to deed restrictions and their enforcement. All documenta-tion has been compiled and turned over to the attorneys and we are waiting to schedule a meeting once they have had the opportuni-ty to review them in detail.

We have heard a few concerns regarding the gate at Southwind Park not being locked. The lock was removed to comply with legal access standards of a 501-c4 or-ganization, signs were posted with park hours and the gate is closed and locked at night. Any resident who sees anyone in the park after

dark should feel free to contact Pas-co County Sheriff. Additionally, once we resume meet-

ings in September we will be voting on the installation of an electric gate to ensure only Sea Pines residents have access to the park during day-light hours. Please join us and vote so we can move forward with im-proving our neighborhood. Respectfully, Jeromy Gamble

The Veterans Corner

By James Alling

Happy June Sea Pines! We are finally returning to a

little normalcy in our lives, however the Veterans Ad-

ministration (VA) is still erring on the side of caution

which is completely understandable. The VA under-

stands that veterans still have health needs in these try-

ing times, but most parts of their clinics and hospitals

remain closed to routine appointments. One alternative

they are touting is Telehealth. Telehealth is basically

your medical provider having a real-time video visit with

you. During that visit they will address your concerns,

monitor your vital signs, and store your health data for

future reference. You can also upload videos, photos,

and any other data related to your health concerns. Fi-

nally, Telehealth allows your medical provider to coordi-

nate with other VA providers across the country so they

can collaborate on your medical needs if necessary. You

can find more information on this initiative at https://

telehealth.va.gov/.

Next, some of you may have recently found yourself as a

Caregiver to a disabled veteran, or you may have been

providing care for years now. Either way there is a pro-

gram that could benefit you. The VA’s Caregiver Peer

Support Mentoring Program is designed to help new or

overwhelmed caregivers, or allows a seasoned caregiver

to provide mentoring to others. The program is open to

any caregiver of a Veteran who is enrolled in VA health

care. The program is open to caregivers for Veterans of

all eras. Veterans can serve as a mentor or a mentee.

The initial program commitment is six months, but

shorter periods may be possible. The program provides

camaraderie during times when caregivers experience

feelings of isolation and loneliness caused by withdrawal

from previous habits and lifestyle. They may also talk

about the highs, the lows, and the challenges and frus-

trations of caring for loved ones. Other times they may

discuss personal goals, projects and their crafts. If you

would like more information on this program you can

call the Bay Pines Hospital at 727-398-6661 ext. 17239,

or the James A. Haley Hospital at 813-972-2000 ext.

5140.

Lastly and how I will end each of these articles, if you

are having immediate issues that do not require calling

911, please call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-

8255 and press 1, or chat online at VeteransCri-

sisLine.net/Chat, or you can even text them at 838255.

See you next month and feel free to email me with any

general Veteran’s related questions!

James

Mental Health Awareness

Month

May was Mental Health Awareness Month

but the Pasco Sheriff’s Office responds to calls

relating to mental health or substance abuse

each day. In 2019, PSO announced the

formation of the Behavioral Health

Intervention Team to help mitigate these

calls and help citizens take steps in recovery

or treatment.

Originally setting out to work with citizens

in Pasco with multiple calls for service relat-

ing to mental health, such as Baker Acts, the

goal for BHIT is to build meaningful relation-

ships with their clients and ultimately help

those clients change their lives for the better.

BHIT detectives find that some people have

lost faith in the systems that can help them,

or simply don’t know where to turn. Building

those relationships over time can help amend

some of those issues.

The team, which is comprised of a captain,

two sergeants, 12 detectives, two Animal As-

sisted Therapy K9s and an analyst, has ex-

panded its purview since its inception. They

now cover additional types of work, such as

reaching out to homeless citizens to connect

them with services, such as work placement

or housing services. Furthermore, BHIT de-

tectives meet with those who recently over-

dosed. Detectives want to use that momen-

tous event in a person’s life as a turning

point, and link them with programs that may

help them work through their addictions.

One in five Americans experience a mental

illness and nearly one in 25 adults live with a

severe mental illness. With COVID-19 at top

of mind, mental health-related calls for ser-

vice have been on the rise in Pasco. It's imper-

ative to find ways to cope with stress. BHIT

detectives have gathered a list of coping

strategies to employ during this arduous

time.

Limit your time watching the news or read-

ing about the pandemic. Take in small dos-

es to stay informed, but not overwhelm

yourself with news.

Take care of your body: take deep breaths,

stretch, meditate, eat healthy and well-

balanced meals, exercise, avoid excessive

alcohol consumption and never take drugs.

Make time to unwind: find something you

enjoy such as a craft, reading or spending

time with pets

Get outside and enjoy fresh air, while main-

taining your physical distance

Stay in touch with friends and loved ones.

Calling, texting or video chatting are all

helpful tools to stay connected.

nami.org.

with substance abuse or suicidal thoughts,
