Message from the Vice President

Happy September to everyone in Sea
Pines!
I hope everyone is staying happy and
healthy. As many of you know Septem-
ber brings us the peak of hurricane sea-
son which falls on Sept 10th. It’s a good
practice this time of year to go ahead
and stock up on possible hurricane sup-
plies and plenty of water. Having a solid
evacuation plan in multiple directions is
never a bad idea either. For those of you
who have access to FaceBook or
YouTube, Mike’s Weather Page is a
great resource of information. He does
live broadcasts daily and gives a solid
review of potential or named storms. His
website wwww.spaghettimodels.com has
any and all information you could ask
for including all official information from
the National Hurricane Center, as well
as, all updated hurricane models.
We have a few items on our agenda
for the September board members meet-
ing. We, as a board, will be discussing
what is the best way to hold our first
association meeting since the Covid-19
pandemic started. State and federal
mandates dictate seating and building
capacity and we will be discussing how
to hold a public meeting safely within
those guidelines before the scheduled
meeting on Sept 16th.
We have received and reviewed, as a
board, the findings of our attorney John
Renke and posted those findings in full
on our website www.seapines-fl.com for
anyone to review.
We have a coastal cleanup scheduled
for September 19th at 8 am. Anyone who
would like to help clean up our neighbor-
hood can meet us at 7:50 at the club
house. As always we will be cleaning up
along Old Dixie, as well as, by boat on
the canals. Anyone wishing to clean up
trash and debris by boat feel free to use
the dumpster which will be located at
the club house to dispose of any materi-
als you pickup. We greatly appreciate peo-
ple volunteering to help keep Sea Pines
clean.
Many of you may have noticed the work
being done on the culverts running under
Yachtsman. We have been working with
the county since 2016 to get the four cul-
verts which run under Yachtsman re-
placed. These culverts have collapsed and
are obviously not allowing water to flow
from the north side of Yachtsman to the
south side as originally designed. This is
causing a lack of flow and flush during the
high and low tide cycles and thus causing
the water on the south side of Yachtsman
to become full of sediment and remain
stagnant. Currently we need four more
easements granted to the county to per-
form the required work. These easements
will allow the county to remove and replace
the collapsed culverts, fix any issues with
the current “walls” which are adjacent to
each culvert and make sure we don’t have
a collapse of Yachtsman.
Lastly, IF we are able to sort out a safe
and effective way to hold our community
association meeting on September 16th, we
will be revisiting the topic of adding an
electric gate to the entrance of Southwind
Park. This topic was discussed in detail at
previous meetings and a motion was made
and passed to hold a vote at our May meet-
ing. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 that
meeting was canceled and we went into
our summer break season. Hopefully we
can hold the upcoming meeting, answer
any questions regarding the gate and vote
as a community to get it installed so we
can control access to Southwind Park to
residents only and within the park hours.
Hope everyone stays safe and healthy
and we can see each other on September
16th.

The Veterans Corner
By James Alling
Happy September Sea Pines! As social distancing and isolation
continue some of you veterans may be going a little stir crazy.
Well here and across the country VA medical facilities are ex-
panding services, including previously cancelled elective proce-
dures and routine in-person appointments. Along with these
services, they have begun welcoming back their volunteers
carefully and gradually with several safeguards. Also, based
on critical needs, they have created new volunteer roles,
adapted some, and continue to pause others. So before showing
up for work, volunteers should obtain approval and complete
orientation and safety training. Like everyone at VA facilities,
they need to wear a face covering and follow physical distanc-
ing guidelines while on duty. They also need to consent to
health screenings, including temperature checks, prior to en-
tering the facility. Volunteers interested in returning to work
or volunteering with the VA in some capacity should contact
their local Voluntary Service office to discuss current facility
needs and their interests. If you are in a high-risk category,
they ask that you continue to stay at home until this pandemic
winds down. Lastly, if you need more information about who to
contact, please visit https://www.volunteer.va.gov/
directory/ and click “VOLUNTEER OR DONATE NOW.”
Next, since the onset of COVID-19, the VA has been hyper
focused on healthy living to assist your immune system
should you become ill. They have released a monthly series
online called “Fresh Focus Podcast” focused on healthy die-
tary choices. This month’s topic has been “All About Pro-
tein” and its benefits. Protein plays a huge role in weight
management. It helps reduce your appetite and curb crav-
ings because it requires the most calories to digest. Fur-
thermore, since protein helps preserve lean body mass, it
can help to make sure that the weight you lose is mostly fat.
Good sources include foods such as meat, dairy products,
legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, and some vegetables. Some
less healthy sources include foods like processed meats,
fried foods, and highly processed protein-enriched foods.
The amount of protein you need in order to feel your best
will depend on several factors: your age, activity level, goals,
and underlying health conditions. Meeting your optimal
requirement is necessary for good immune function, a
healthy metabolism, weight management, and performance.
A good rule of thumb is to eat at least half your body weight
(in pounds) in grams of protein. For more information, visit
https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/77637/fresh-focus-5-
healthy-plate-method-about-protein/.
Lastly, if you are having immediate issues that do not re-
quire calling 911, please call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-
800-273-8255 and press 1, or chat online at VeteransCri-
sisLine.net/Chat, or you can text them at 838255. See you
next month and feel free to email me with any general Vet-
eran’s related questions!

PSO Narcotics Unit Removes 435K
Lethal Fentanyl Doses from Pasco
Streets
Sheriff Chris Nocco recently announced a
series of significant drug busts in Pasco
County, which included 435,000 lethal
doses of fentanyl. Pasco Sheriff’s Office’s
Narcotics Unit arrested four individuals
for a litany of charges including traffick-
ing in fentanyl, possession of cocaine with
intent to sell, felon in possession of a fire-
arm, trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in
MDMA and possession of methampheta-
mines with intent to distribute.
Overdoses in Pasco have spiked recently,
with May and June seeing 258 overdoses,
55 of which were fatal. A lethal dose of
fentanyl is just two milligrams, which is
roughly the size of a grain of rice. In addi-
tion to fentanyl, drugs such as cocaine and
methamphetamines were removed from
the streets, as were paraphernalia and
firearms. “Those drug traffickers are out
there poisoning our community and poi-
soning people in our families,” said Sheriff
Nocco. “They’re causing pain and suffering
for so many that have seen their loved
ones fall into this trap.”
Unlike television shows, where crimes get
solved in an hour, taking down these oper-
ations takes time. To ensure PSO presents
a robust case to the State Attorney’s Of-
fice, deputies and detectives work diligent-
ly to ensure operations like these are done
well and in accordance with local, state
and federal laws.
In speaking about the recent overdoses,
Sheriff Nocco reiterated that PSO is here
to help those with addictions. “That is
what law enforcement should be doing,”
he said. “Helping those people with ad-
diction, getting them help and putting
them in the right direction, get them in
the health care community.”
Sheriff Nocco also vowed to continue to
take down these traffickers through con-
tinued investigations. “When you talk
about 435,000 lethal doses, and we’ve
lost 55 people, this scourge is killing our
community,” he said. He continued with
a message to drug dealers in Pasco,
“know that the Pasco Sheriff’s Office and
federal agents are coming after you hard
and it’ll be with passion.”
Investigations into crimes such as these
often start with a tip from the communi-
ty about illegal activity. PSO encourages
the community to continue to call in tips
about drug houses and activity. The PSO
Crime Tips Line is 1-800-706-2488, or
you can report a tip online at PascoSher-
iff.com.
If you or someone you know has an ad-
diction issue, please reach out to get
help. In addition to sharing resources on
our social media platforms, PSO also has
a section on their website for community-
based resources for not only substance
abuse, but also mental health, homeless-
ness, youth and family services, suicide,
autism and veterans services.
