Message from the President
SeaPines-FL.com
Hello again Sea Pines!
Seems like time is just flying
by. Last month we had our
first Adopt-A-Road clean-up of
Old Dixie Hwy for 2020. What
a turn out!!! A BIG thank you
to the 21 people who showed
up early Saturday morning to
help out. I believe that was a
record number of volunteers,
at least since I have been in-
volved. With all the help we
were able to clean from New
York Avenue all the up to Sun-
West Park. Also, a special
thanks to Kevin McNaught for
offering to help out our mow-
ing crew.
The SPCA board is looking for
ways to improve security in the
Sea Pines community. At the
last SPCA general meeting in
January we threw out the idea
to create a Neighborhood
Crime Watch here in Sea
Pines. Speaking to the Sher-
iff’s office I learned that the ter-
minology “Crime Watch” is no
longer used and the protocol has
changed a bit. Nonetheless, I
was happy to see a unanimous
interest and approval for this
type of program from our mem-
bers. I am pleased to welcome
Deputy Ron Buzzetto from the
Pasco County Sheriff’s office as
our guest speaker for the meet-
ing in February. This is your op-
portunity to ask the officer ques-
tions about this program or per-
haps other concerns you may
have. We will learn about our
responsibilities as residents as
well as how we pass on suspi-
cious activity and information to
the Sheriff’s office. I invite all
residents of Sea Pines (members
or not) to attend this upcoming
meeting on Wednesday February
19th.
Cheers,
Randy
VOLUME XI I , I SSUE I I SEA P INES NEWS PAGE 2 SEA P INES NEWS
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM. Six of seven
officers and board members were present, so there was a
quorum.
There was a motion, which was seconded and approved to
accept the minutes from the December meeting as published
in the Sea Pines newsletter.
Jerry Sweet gave the treasurer’s report for the month of
December 2019, and the only question was regarding an
unusually high office supply expense. It was explained that
it was the cost to replace the cartridges for the laser printer.
Randy Dennison announced that we are looking for volun-
teers to perform the annual audit on Sea Pines accounts.
Two people are required for this job, and it cannot be any of
the officers or board members. There were no volunteers at
the meeting, so we are still looking for someone to help with
this task. Please contact a member of the board if you would
like to volunteer.
Report of Standing Committees
Activities & Events committee (Cookie Miller)
There was no news from this committee. If you have any
specific events you would like to see in the Sea Pines neigh-
borhood, please speak up. The calendar is wide open.
Boat Ramp committee (Jerry Sweet & Jeromy Gam-
ble)
New signs have been posted at the boat ramp warning about
it being slippery when wet. Please use caution when launch-
ing your boat. The batteries in the cameras have been re-
placed and all is functioning well.
Waterways committee (Jeromy Gamble)
This new committee was added to manage the canals and
channel. The main focus will be as a liaison with govern-
ment agencies to improve our water quality by clearing the
culverts where debris is preventing a healthy flow. The
main task is continuing to “bug” the powers that be to take
a look and get our culverts repaired. There was an employee
from the Pasco County Stormwater Management Depart-
ment in attendance at the meeting. He was able to give Je-
romy a direct contact in his department for this project.
Hopefully this will be a step forward on an important pro-
ject. Note: Since the meeting Jeromy has been successful in
placing a work order to have the culverts cleaned and re-
paired with the Stormwater Management Department and
they indicated we should see activity within 10 days.
Mowing committee (Pat Piccininno)
No update. We continue to look for volunteers to help mow
the Sea Pines common grounds.
Adopt-a-Road committee (Ernie Reed)
The next Adopt-A-Road cleanup of Old Dixie is scheduled for
this Saturday, January 18th 2020. All interested volunteers
should be at the clubhouse at 8:00AM.
Membership Dues committee (Jerry Sweet)
Sea Pines ended the year with 803 members. All member-
ships ended 12/31, and 60 people have already renewed
their membership. Dues can be mailed or dropped off at the
clubhouse or you can use our new online payment system
on the Sea Pines website.
Parks committee (Roger Chillura)
No update.
Newsletter committee (Jerry Sweet)
Need inputs by January 21st for inclusion in the February
2020 issue. Anyone who is interested in advertising in the
monthly newsletter please contact Jerry.
Welcoming committee (Donna Hodnicki)
No update.
Website committee (Randy Dennison)
The website now has an e-Commerce page to allow resi-
dents to purchase an SPCA membership or a boat ramp fob.
Please remember to check out the new website
(www.SeaPines-FL.com). This URL is posted above the
clubhouse door and on the Sea Pines signage. Visitors to
the site are growing steadily with roughly 500+ unique visi-
tors to the site each month.
Unfinished or Old Business
Randy Dennison is still working with Kazar’s Electric to
complete the permitting process and schedule an install
date for the electrical box at the Southwind Park.
New Business
Upcoming Events:
Women’s Club luncheons: See the newsletter or the interac-
tive calendar on the website to learn more.
The Sea Pines board asked the attendees at the meeting if
they would be supportive of investigating a neighborhood
watch group for Sea Pines. The idea seemed to have ap-
proval with those at the meeting, so we will pursue the
idea. We will have a representative from the Sheriff’s office
come to a future meeting and explain the current responsi-
bilities and requirements to sponsor a neighborhood watch
plan.
A neighborhood watch is an organized group of civil-
ians (working with local law enforcement) devoted
to crime and vandalism prevention. Essentially the
watch group is the “eyes-and-ears” for the neighbor-
hood.
One attendee did comment on how dark the parking lot at
the clubhouse is. Many others confirmed that it is an issue.
The board will get a quote to have a light installed. NOTE:
After the meeting, we received a quote to have the light in-
stalled by WREC, and it was only $65 to install it and $10/
month for the additional power. This sounded like a great
deal and a good idea to solve a potential safety issue. The
board was polled and the approval vote was unanimous.
The light will be installed as soon as possible.
There was a motion made and seconded, and the meeting
was adjourned at 7:40.

The Veterans Corner
By James Alling
Well hello Sea Pines!
My name is James Alling and my wife Annemarie and
I moved here about 4.5 years ago after I retired from
the Air Force. She was a teacher for a number of
years, but at this point we are both semi-retired. I
have enjoyed reading Liz’s “The Veteran’s Corner”
during our time here and found her information to be
very useful. When I found out the community needed
a replacement for Liz I decided to step up. She has big
shoes to fill and I will do the best I can.
First, a little more about me. I was born and raised in
the Tampa Bay area, and I served active duty in the
Air Force from 1989 – 2015 retiring as an E-9. I was
permanently stationed at 11 bases and visited many,
many more. Immediately after I retired, I became a
teacher here in Pasco County for 3 years and decided
that was not for me, so that leads to my current semi-
retired status.
During my active duty days, I heard rumors and sto-
ries that the VA was not serving in the best interest of
Veterans. My overall experience since retiring has
been very, very positive when dealing with the VA.
They have been overwhelmingly professional, caring,
and timely. Again, I was initially skeptical because I
did not understand the system, and it was an easy tar-
get to bad mouth when something appeared complicat-
ed. There was a bit of a learning curve regarding what
clinic to go to, appointments, ID cards, disability rat-
ings calculations, MyHealthEVet, etc. I think I have a
good grasp on the system and have utilized the many
services the VA provides frequently. Bottom line is if
you are feeling overwhelmed by the system, do not
hesitate to contact me by email at
[email protected] and I will help you the best
I can. If you are having immediate issues that do not
require calling 911, please call the Veterans Crisis
Line at 1-800-273-8255 and press 1, or chat online at
VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat, or you can even text
them at 838255.
I had a short timeline on this first iteration of The Vet-
erans Corner, and this was more of an introduction
than detailed information. I look forward to providing
updates to you in the coming months ahead. Until
then, take care and be nice on NextDoor.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY
February is upon us….Cold weather but not as cold as up north…. Thanks to God for that! So with all this cold weather it is important to remember to cuddle with someone special! Valentines Day reminds us to love those near to us. Those who are always around, and sometimes we forget to recog-nize how important they are in our lives… the people who are always there to pick up the pieces, or just share a piece of chocolate cake (or maybe a big bowl of ice cream) when times are tuff! The people who we share laughs with when times are sweet….. Love all your friends, and all those who make your life so special.
The Women’s club tries to plan new and exciting adventures each month & we are always looking for new ideas…. Join us, and Share yours! We look forward to new faces, and I know that there are new residents in the community, so come on out, meet some of your neighbors, and make some new friends! We will be happy to have you join us.

FEBRUARY RECIPE
Who doesn't love chocolate???? Here is a simple reci-pe for some quick cookies. Of course, in celebration of Valentines day you may want to serve these yummy delights with some Briers Chocolate Chip Raspberry ice cream.... just a thought. But we all know that cookies are at their best with a big glass of cold milk, or a cup of hot cocoa! Be indulgent!
Please check out the monthly newsletters for infor-mation regarding the Sea Pines Women’s Club activi-ties. We would love to see you at any of our activities.
CHOCOLATE CRACKLE COOKIES
Preheat oven to 350 and grease a cookie sheet
Mix together:
1 box of Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownie Mix
1 cup all purpose flour
3 eggs
1/3 cup vegetable oil
After mixing roll into balls, about 1" in diameter
Use approx 3/4 cup confectioners (powdered) sugar in a bowl
Roll each ball until covered with sugar
Place on greased cookie sheet, and bake for approx 11 to 13 minutes.
remove from sheet & cool (or maybe eat warm--yum)!
Hope you enjoy.
If you have children this is a great recipe to get them involved with, as it is quick and easy! Have some fami-ly fun.
This will make approx 2 -3 dozen cookies, depending on the size of the balls.

One of the most popular Pasco Sheriff’s Office
units is our K9 Unit that is comprised of mul-
tiple K9 teams. We currently have 25 K9
teams at the agency, which includes three
teams that are in training. There are plans to
add even more to our teams as the combina-
tion of a handler and dog is beneficial in many
ways.
K9s are beneficial in many ways for our agen-
cy. They are what is called a “force multiplier,”
which in military and law enforcement science,
refers to a factor or a combination of factors
that gives personnel or weapons (or other
hardware) the ability to accomplish greater
feats than without it. How do K9s assist their
human counterparts? Our dogs, depending on
their specialty, are trained to run faster, jump
farther, and if need be, attack targets with an-
imal ferocity. Their sense of smell is hundreds
of times more sensitive than humans, which
again, depending on the dog’s specialty, can
search for and find drugs, explosives or accel-
erants, cadavers, or track a live human scent,
which can be a bad guy or girl fleeing from the
law, or a lost child or elderly adult.
Our K9s often ensure quick compliance with
the orders of a deputy from suspects. Many of
our deputies will tell you that a suspect will
have no problem resisting or fighting them,
even after they have been pepper sprayed or
tasered. But when a K9 team shows up, the
suspect is more often than not ready to give up
than have to tangle with an eager K9.
Currently we have 12 K9s that support our
road patrol units. Most of our dog breeds in
patrol are German Shepherds. Depending on
their specialty, we also have Malinois, Blood-
hounds, Labradors, and a Golden Retriever.
As you can tell by our many posts on our mul-
tiple social media accounts, citizens love dogs,
and especially dogs that help our deputies.
Everyone knows the dangerous jobs our dep-
uties do, protecting and serving our citizens.
Our social media accounts allow us to high-
light how the men and women of our agency
work hard at their jobs, love working with
citizens, and are everyday people. That goes
as well for our K9 teams. The dogs don’t
know that there are “good” and “bad” people.
They go to work with their deputy handlers
and think that it is all play time to them. Our
K9 handlers will tell you that when it is time
to go to work, their partners know the partic-
ular sound of the vehicle keys for their Sher-
iff’s Office vehicle. They get excited when
travelling in the vehicle and the deputy turns
on the siren to quickly get to a call for ser-
vice. Our K9s love their “job” and are sad
when the day comes that we have to retire
them for health reasons and old age.
I have plans to increase our K9 unit even
more, as their value and support is irreplace-
able for the jobs that they do. Purchasing and
equipping a K9 team is not cheap, but the job
that they do is worth every penny. The cost of
just the dog can start at $8,000. Then we
have to train them, and their deputy handler.
Then comes the equipment including the K9
vehicle, which is a large SUV. As you may
have seen from our social media accounts, I
am pleased that many private citizens, social
groups, and businesses have come forward to
make the initial purchase of a K9 dog for us.
Others have raised money to purchase equip-
ment, including bullet- and stab-proof vests.
Our K9 deputies and their dogs are some of
the hardest working members at our agency.
They often have to track through woods and
swamps, neighborhoods and buildings, dur-
ing the sweltering heat of the summer and
the cold of the winter. I would like to thank
our citizens for their continued support of our
agency and all of our dedicated members.
