Message from the President

Message from the President

SeaPines-FL.com

Hello again Sea Pines!

Last meeting we invited Officer Ron

Buzzetto from the Pasco County Sher-

iff’s office to speak to us about the

Neighborhood Watch program. Ron

gave us excellent advice that ALL of us

should follow. The Sheriff’s office rec-

ommends:

Observe and report suspicious

behavior rather than personally

engaging in the scenario. Being

a good observant witness is way

more valuable than potentially

putting yourself in danger.

You can report any issues and sub-

mit tips anonymously at

pascosheriff.com.

If you have outdoor security camer-

as, you can register them at cri-

mereports.com. This will al-

low crime enforcement to con-

tact you if there is a crime com-

mitted in your area and you

might have helpful footage.

As we approach the general and local

elections in November I hear frustra-

tion from many of our Sea Pines resi-

dents (and others in neighboring com-

munities) regarding the lack of progress

by Pasco County in addressing some

important issues in our community. To

name a few: 1) our culverts are com-

pletely clogged causing stagnant and

poor water conditions in our canals, 2)

the storm water problems leave some of

the roads on the Woodlands side under

water during heavy rains and 3) Sea

Pines Drive is in poor condition making

it difficult to travel at speed limit.

Road conditions and heavy rains make

it hard to get emergency vehicles in and

out of Sea Pines putting our residents

at risk.

In addition, we have other problems

like the increased homeless in our area

and the channel out to the Gulf is too

shallow (1.5 ft. at Mean Low Water) to

navigate at low tide making Sea Pines

less attractive to owners of larger boats.

Pasco County commissioned a study that

was published in July 2017 that estimated

it would cost $74,706 to dredge our chan-

nel. Some of the cost would be paid for by

money stemming from the 2010 BP Deep-

water Horizon oil spill that affected parts

of the Gulf of Mexico. I recently heard

that the money is earmarked for ‘cities’

affected by the oil spill. Hudson is not a

proper ‘city’ and coastal communities in

Hudson are not eligible for those funds. I

am still looking into this and will keep

you posted.

The Sea Pines board has made these prob-

lems known to our Pasco County commis-

sioner. Jack Mariano has spoken at our

meetings many times over the past few

years and has given us hope that we will

get a resolution to these problems, but

year after year nothing seems to get done.

It looks as though our Pasco County com-

missioners are spending most of the coun-

ty money on the development of Trinity,

Wesley Chapel, and the I-54 corridor. The

northwest corner of Pasco (District 5) has

been ignored for too long.

Next meeting on March 18th we will have

a special guest speaker; Brandi Geoit, who

is running against Jack Mariano for the

District 5 Commissioner seat. I ask eve-

ryone in Sea Pines to join us and come

prepared to ask Brandi how she would

address these issues (or your own issues)

so that we can make an informed choice at

the ballot box in November.

Cheers and I hope to see you at our meet-

ing on March 18th.

The meeting was called to order. Four of seven offic-

ers and board members were present, so there was a

quorum.

There was a motion, which was seconded and ap-

proved to accept the minutes from the January meet-

ing as published in the Sea Pines newsletter. Randy

Dennison announced that we would condense the reg-

ular meeting agenda in order to give the time to our

guest speaker Pasco County Sheriff Deputy Ron

Buzzetto.

Jerry Sweet was not in attendance, so Randy Den-

nison gave an abbreviated version of the treasurer’s

report for the month of January verbally and provid-

ed a written copy for anyone who wanted to view the

details. There were no questions.

Pat Piccininno has completed the annual audit of the

Sea Pines accounting records for 2019. Everything

was in order.

Report of Standing Committees

Waterways committee

Pasco County sent someone out to inspect the cul-

verts, and the conclusion is that they are clogged

causing the stagnant water in those canals. The prob-

lem they explained is that the culverts are made of

corrugated tin, which has started to collapse. The cul-

verts need to be replaced instead of cleaned. This will

require the county to contact all the homeowners who

will be affected by the road construction that will be

required on Yachtsman before the project can start.

We were also corrected on the information given to us

by Jack Mariano that Sea Pines is included in the

dredging and improvement plan for neighborhood

channels in Pasco County that will be paid for out of

BPI Oil money. We are actually not on the existing

list.

We will catch up with the other standing committees

at the March general meeting.

Unfinished or Old Business

Regarding our request for a permit to install an elec-

tric meter at the entrance to Southwind Park, Pasco

County will issue a permit ONLY if the request is ac-

companied by a need for the electricity. Based on con-

tinuing concerns about the security of the park voiced

by attendees at recent meetings, the board is sug-

gesting we go ahead and have an electric gate in-

stalled along with the electric meter. This should

satisfy the county’s requirement and provide a relia-

ble way to control entrance to the park

Randy announced that the board will ask the mem-

bership to approve the installation of a fob-controlled

gate at the entrance to the park at the March mem-

bership meeting. We have a proposal of $11,350 from

Smith Fence.

Brandi Geoit will be our guest speaker at the

March membership meeting. She will be run-

ning against Jack Mariano for the County

Commissioner of District 5.

We then welcomed Deputy Buzzetto for a very in-

formative and entertaining conversation about safe-

ty concerns in the Sea Pines neighborhood. He ad-

dressed a wide range of questions from residents in

attendance at the meeting. Here are a few important

notes that he emphasized:

When questioned about when it is appropriate to call

in a concern, he gave some “based on the actual situ-

ation explanations” except for a question about a

child being approached by a stranger at a bus stop.

He was very emphatic with his answer. “When any

crime against a child is even suspected, a call to 911

should happen immediately with any available infor-

mation.”

The Sheriffs Department recommends a thought pro-

cess of observe and report suspicious behavior ra-

ther than personally engaging in the scenario. Being

a good observant witness is way more valuable than

potentially putting yourself in danger.

You can report any issues and submit tips anony-

mously at pascosheriff.com.

If you have outdoor security cameras, you can regis-

ter them at crimereports.com. This will allow

crime enforcement to contact you if there is a crime

committed in your area and you might have helpful

footage.

There was a motion made and seconded, and the

meeting was adjourned at 8:28.

The Veterans Corner

By James Alling

Happy March Sea Pines! I have some good and interest-

ing tidbits and initiatives related to Veterans. The first is

the 2020 National Veterans Day Poster Contest is under-

way. Each year the Veterans Day National Committee

publishes a commemorative Veterans Day Poster. The

Committee selects a poster from artwork submitted by

artists nationwide. It also distributes the winning design

to VA facilities, military installations around the world,

and across cities and towns in our nation. It then serves as

the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day Ob-

servance at Arlington National Cemetery. The theme for

Veterans Day 2020 is: “Vision: Veterans in Focus.” The

deadline for submissions is April 1, 2020. If you want fur-

ther information on the specific requirements and you

have some serious art skills, my contact information is at

the bottom of this article.

As you may have seen on Nextdoor, the US Census Bu-

reau is seeking Census Takers and they are now reaching

out to Veterans to fill this critical need. If you are inter-

ested in extra income paid weekly, flexible hours, and paid

training find out more information at 2020census.gov/jobs.

Regarding the Coronavirus, the VA has activated its emer-

gency management coordination cell (EMCC) and is imple-

menting an aggressive public health response to protect

and care for Veterans. If you have symptoms of fever,

cough, and shortness of breath and have either recently

returned from China, or have direct exposure to others

diagnosed with 2019-nCoV, seek immediate treatment at

your local VA medical facility.

Next, the VA has partnered with the Association of Mili-

tary Banks of America (AMBA) to launch the Veterans

Benefits Banking Program (VBBP). With VBBP, Veterans

and their families can safely, reliably, and inexpensively

receive and manage their VA monetary benefits through

financial services at participating banks. To find more

information on the Veterans Benefits Banking Program,

the enrollment process, or how to find a bank that fits

your needs, visit benefits.va.gov/banking.

Lastly and how I will end each of these articles, if you are

having immediate issues that do not require calling 911,

please call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and

press 1, or chat online at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat, or

you can even text them at 838255.

See you next month and feel free to email me with any

general Veteran’s related questions!

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office receives many

calls every day regarding potential scams.

Unfortunately, too often, our citizens become

victims of these scams. In this month’s news-

letter, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office is highlight-

ing the most common type of scams to help

prevent you, your family, and your friends

from becoming a victim.

Loan Scam

When searching for a personal loan, make

sure to be cautious of pop-up websites or

phishing emails. A phishing email is a dis-

guised email that makes the receiver believe

it is from a legitimate company/source when it

is actually sent by scammer. Be alert if some-

one contacts you offering you a loan when you

have not been applying for any.

If you are applying for a loan, make sure to

look for legitimate companies and be careful

when searching for loan companies. Also, do

not provide your personal identification infor-

mation via the internet.

Tax Scam

Our citizens become victimized when a scam-

mer calls the victim and tells them the IRS

has identified they owe money. If they do not

pay the amount stated then a warrant will be

issued and they will be arrested.

The IRS is not going to call you and ask you

to pay a debt over the phone. Also, they will

never ask you to pay them via gift cards.

If you receive a call like this, take notes of the

phone number they called you from and who

they said they were. Do not pay them and

contact law enforcement.

Warrant Scam

Callers may claim to be the Pasco Sheriff’s

Office (PSO), the Social Security Admin-

istration, IRS, FBI or other local or federal

government agencies, and may request in-

formation from you or claim that you have a

warrant for your arrest.

PSO will never discuss warrants with you

over the phone, nor will they request pay-

ment in the form of gift cards.

Citizens who receive such calls should hang

up immediately as these calls are scams. Do

not follow any instructions the caller pro-

vides and do not provide them with any per-

sonal information.

Please take a moment to discuss these com-

mon scams with friends and loved ones to

help us safeguard our community.
