10 Things to Know about ICD-10 ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, tenth edi-tion) is the most recent diagnosis and procedure coding system maintained by the World Health Organization. ICD-10 will replace the ICD-9 code set currently used in the U.S. health care system, providing more robust and specific data that will help improve patient care and accurate pay-ment for services rendered. The federal government re-quires that ICD-10 codes must be used on all HIPAA trans-actions, replacing the current ICD-9 codes, beginning Oct. 1, 2014.
