A Letter from Our Dear Parishioners, Silent Night. For many people today, these are among the two scariest words in the English vocabulary. At least that’s my theory. So, let’s put this theory to the test! It is nearly impossible to experience silence anywhere in public these days. Restaurants, shopping malls, medical offices...even grocery stores constantly blare music into their customers’ ears. If you try to escape the “image and sound pollution” for a hike in the mountains, for example, it’s highly probable that someone’s Bluetooth speaker will soon drown out the chirping of birds and the soothing sounds of nature. “Blue light”—that ubiquitous glow which illumines our phones, tablets and laptop screens—has so thoroughly banished natural darkness from our lives that, for many of us, there is almost no discernible space between late night screen time and collapsing into an agitated sleep. What is behind our manic efforts to avoid silence and night at all costs? Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Catholic theologian, summed up man’s irrational fear of the interior life with these words: “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It’s a good bet that most people today are entirely unaware of how their screen habits prevent them from hearing the “still, small voice” (cf. 1 Kings 19:12) of God in the depths of their souls. So accustomed have we become with filling our heads with images and sounds, that we don’t realize how these habits lock us in a prison of loneliness, sadness and isolation. Jesus came to reveal his Father to us...and to reveal us to ourselves. He knows that if we never look inside, we will never know who we really are. So, he came to us in the most non-threatening, gentle way possible—as a baby! Now, I don’t know about you, but when a baby smiles at me with one of those unrestrained, unselfconscious, innocent, laugh-producing smiles, whatever is weighing on me at that moment melts away from the pure joy of seeing pure innocence. So, it should come as no surprise that Jesus came to us, initially, as an infant. And he came to us at the quietest, darkest time of the year to invite us to gaze upon his sweet smile in silent contemplation, to break through our image-overloaded, sound-drowned trance. Let’s put this to the test! I invite you to set aside five minutes to imagine the infant Jesus...gazing at you from Mary’s arms...and breaking into his “baby smile” the moment he sees you. Look into his eyes...and let him look into yours. Pay attention to what that encounter is doing to your heart. My theory is that you will experience a joy in the depth of your heart from the one who created your heart to experience his heavenly peace! Merry Christmas! God’s blessings, my prayers...

The Christmas Season is here and Christmas

Day is just the beginning… December 25th begins the Octave of Christmas. An Octave is an eight day celebration. The feast itself (Christmas) is the first day, followed by six days and then ending with a Solemnity. 1st Day: Christmas Day, Nativity of Our Lord 2nd Day: Feast of St Stephen, First Martyr His feast day reminds us that we must always be prepared to confess the Lord Jesus with our lives. Traditionally, this has been celebrated by sharing our material goods with those less fortunate. 3rd Day: Feast of St John, Apostle and Evangelist 4th Day: Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs As we remember the first children who gave their lives for Our Lord, we can set aside some special time with the important children in our lives. 5th Day: The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Jo-

Una Carta de Nuestro Queridos feligreses, Noche Silenciosa. Para muchas personas hoy en día, estas son algunas de las dos palabras más aterradoras en el vocabulario inglés. Al menos esa es mi teoría. Así que, vamos a poner a prueba esta teoría! Es casi imposible experimentar silencio en cualquier lugar público en estos días. Restaurantes, centros comerciales, consultorios médicos... incluso los supermercados constantemente ponen música estruendosa en los oídos de sus clientes. Si intenta escapar de la "contaminación de imagen y sonido" para una caminata en las montañas, por ejemplo, es muy probable que el altavoz del Bluetooth de alguien pronto ahogará el canto de las aves y los sonidos relajantes de la naturaleza. "Luz azul", ese resplandor ubicuo que ilumina nuestros teléfonos, tabletas y pantallas portátiles, ha desterrado tan a fondo la oscuridad natural de nuestras vidas que, para muchos de nosotros, casi no hay espacio discernible entre la pantalla nocturna y el colapso en un sueño agitado. ¿Qué hay detrás de nuestros esfuerzos maníacos para evitar el silencio y la noche a toda costa? Blaise Pascal, un matemático francés, físico, inventor, escritor y teólogo católico, resumió el miedo irracional del hombre a la vida interior con estas palabras: "Todos los problemas de la humanidad se derivan de la incapacidad del hombre para sentarse tranquilamente en una habitación sola." Es una buena apuesta que la mayoría de la gente hoy en día no sea totalmente consciente de cómo sus hábitos de pantalla les impiden escuchar la "voz apacible y pequeña"(cf. 1 Reyes 19:12) de Dios en lo más profundo de sus almas. Tan acostumbrados nos hemos vuelto a llenar nuestras cabezas de imágenes y sonidos, que no nos damos cuenta de cómo estos hábitos nos encierran en una prisión de soledad, tristeza y aislamiento. Jesús vino a revelarnos a su Padre... y para revelarnos a nosotros mismos. Sabe que si nunca miramos adentro, nunca sabremos quiénes somos realmente. Por lo tanto, vino a nosotros de la manera más suave y no amenazante posible, ¡como un bebe! Ahora, no sé tú, pero cuando un bebé me sonríe con una de esas sonrisas desenfrenadas, inconscientes, inocentes y productoras de risa, lo que me está pesando en ese momento se desvanece de la pura alegría de ver pura inocencia. Por lo tanto, no debería sorprender que Jesús vino a nosotros, inicialmente, como un bebé. Y vino a nosotros en la época más tranquila y oscura del año para invitarnos a contemplar su dulce sonrisa en la contemplación silenciosa, para romper nuestro trance sobrecargado de imagen y ahogado por el sonido. ¡Vamos a poner esto a prueba! Los invito a apartar cinco minutos para imaginar al niño Jesús... mirándote desde los brazos de María... y irrumpir en su "sonrisa de bebé" en el momento en que te ve. Mírele a los ojos... y dejar que mire en el tuyo. Pongan atención a lo que ese encuentro le está haciendo a su corazón. Mi teoría es que usted experimente una alegría en la profundidad de su corazón de quien creó su corazón para experimentar su paz celestial! ¡Feliz Navidad!

Escuela de San Simon y San Judas ahora está aceptando solicitudes para estudiantes de Pre-Kindergarten - 8 grado para el año escolar 2020-2021.
