A Letter from Our Dear Parishioners, Get out your reading glasses ... or magnifying glasses! We had to shrink the print to get all this important information on one page. As we know from the previous letter, whenever we invite a non-Catholic or a fallen-away Catholic to Mass, we must explain to them what proper reception of Holy Communion entails. The restriction of Holy Communion to Catholics who are in a state of grace is essential for their soul and for proper reverence toward Jesus Christ. In this letter, I offer several important sources to help you understand why addressing this issue with your guest is so critical. Let’s begin with a key excerpt from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians:

Whoever ... eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. (1 Cor 11:27-29)

The Bread of Life is actually dangerous to the soul who receives it “in an unworthy manner” (i.e. in a state of mortal sin). To illustrate, consider the antibiotic penicillin. For many, penicillin is very effective in treating bacterial infections. For someone like me, however, who has a terrible reaction to this particular drug, it can make things much worse. In like manner, the Holy Eucharist is a powerful help to the soul who receives our Lord worthily, but to the soul who forces the Body of Christ into a body and soul mired in mortal sin, it can kill our relationship with the Lord—much like filling a guest room in your home with rotting garbage and making Jesus sleep there. Around the year 153 A.D.—a mere 50 year or so after the Gospel of John was written—St. Justin Martyr wrote of the Catholic doctrine of the Holy Eucharist:

And this food is called among us Εὐχαριστία [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined.

St. Justin enumerates three requirements. First, the person must believe all that the Catholic Church teaches. Secondly, the person must be a baptized Christian who fulfills the first condition and who has publicly professed that Catholic faith (as baptized converts from Protestantism do at the Easter Vigil). Finally, the person must be “living as Christ has enjoined”—i.e. in a state of grace with no known mortal sin. Finally, in many Catholic parishes, you will find this kind of explanation in missalettes regarding Holy Communion:

Reception of Holy Communion is open to Catholics in a state of grace (not conscious of any mortal sin), who have fasted for at least one hour prior to reception. (Water and medicine do not break the fast. The elderly and those who are sick as well as those who care for them, are not obliged to fast.) Non-Christians, and those Christians who are not in full communion with the Catholic Church, are welcome to worship with us, but should not present themselves for Communion. We invite you to pray for Christian unity.

Here we see (1) the necessity of the one-hour Eucharistic fast; (2) the need to be in full communion with the Catholic Church; and (3) the essential condition of being in a state of grace. At the start of my next letter, I’ll expand a bit on the one-hour Eucharistic fast...and then give you one more way to lead a lost sheep back into the fold of the Good Shepherd. God’s blessings, my prayers...

In the Gospel, Jesus is transfigured and a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well

pleased: Listen to him.” Do we listen to Jesus when he asks us to take care of our brothers and sisters who are suffering?

If every person brought one item for St Vincent de Paul each Sunday during Lent, our pantry would be very full.

There are things that we purchase on a weekly basis and would love to have them donated:
