QUOTE OF THE

DAYWhy India’s NSG ambition may still be a distant dream..?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have scored a measure of diplomatic victory by winning Swiss backing for entry into the 48-nation Nuclear Suppli-ers Group (NSG) but, due to China ‘s continuous op-position, India will still have to wait a bit longer to break into the elite club that regulates global nuclear trade. China has also been insisting that if any conces-sion is given to India, a non-signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the same should ap-ply to Pakistan that has allegedly been caught selling atomic weapons technology to Libya. It seems that the United States is doing more than its bit to facilitate India’s membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), a group that had ironically come into exis-tence in the wake of India’s first nuclear test explosion in 1974. India’s NSG membership is the informal part of the India-US civil nuclear deal of 2005. The Amer-icans are also pressing for the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) to approve India’s entry in a show of hurry even as Italy held out because of the impending trial of the two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen. The US should be able to overcome Italy’s huff and resistance. India on its part had joined the voluntary Hague Code of Conduct Against Ballistic Missiles. While India is keen to join the NSG because it would make so much easier for the country to access uranium for running its nuclear power stations without too much hassle, it is curious as to why the US is so keen to facilitate the Indian membership. The reason seems to be that Washington is keen on New Delhi becoming part of the Ameri-can defence shield against terrorists in West Asia on the one hand, and against China in the South China Sea. Of course, security and strategy experts in India and in the US would not accept that there is such a crude quid pro quo in the move behind the American support for India’s membership in the NSG. It should come as no surprise that China had objected to In-dia’s membership and that Pakistan too wants to be admitted to the NSG. There is not much need to ar-gue India’s case because New Delhi’s place and role in the international network is determined both by its economy and by its well-articulated opposition to de-ter a nuclear war. In comparison, Pakistan’s economy has not yet become a crucial component of the global markets for countries like the US and the European Union to make diplomatic concessions. Secondly, there is the acute fear in the Western capitals that Pa-kistan’s nuclear arsenal is vulnerable and that it may fall into the hands of terrorists.

“now that we have achieved the mission of making a Congress-free India, it is time to make India Muslim-free. We are working on that,” - VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi sparked off another

controversy on Tuesday saying it is time to make India free of Muslims.

Udta Punjab row: Karan Johar comes out in support of Anurag Kashyap

Agency | Mumbai

Film-makers Anurag Kashyap and Karan Jo-har have extended their support to the Udta Pun-jab team amid the Censor Board succumbing to po-litical pressure, thereby suggesting that the Sha-hid Kapoor-starrer should not be set in the state. Both Bollywood A-listers took to their respective Twit-ter handles to share their thoughts on the ongoing controversy. With a refer-ence to the dictator regime of North Korea, the Dev-D director added his voice to the actors and film-mak-ers, who have accused the Board of interfering with artistic freedom. “There is

no film more honest than UDTA PUNJAB And any person or party opposing it is actually GUILTY of promoting drugs,” Anu-rag said in his tweet. The Kuch Kuch Hota Hai di-rector on his part said that the Bollywood fraterni-ty must stand by what is right. The ongoing censor issue just got political as the Censor Board doesn’t want the movie to be set in Punjab. After Censor Board refused to issue a certificate to the Abhishek Chaubey-directed film, the Revising Committee of Censor Board has now given even harsher sug-gestions to the makers, in order to obtain the certif-icate.

The entry for the Rio Olympics Indian dou-bles pairing has raked up unnecessary speculation after the French Open. Given that Leander Paes won his tenth mixed dou-bles title, his case for being paired with Sania Mirza for Rio has gained a lot of traction among fans. Even this writer in his previous column on the issue was erroneous in alluding that perfor-mances post the June 6 ranking deadline may influence things. Let me clarify just what the rules state: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) will select mixed doubles teams taking into account the recognised singles and doubles rankings of June 6, 2016. That in turn clearly implies that only a pairing of Rohan Bopan-na and Sania Mirza is go-ing to be eligible for the cutoff. The draw of 16

A grieving Angel Di Ma-ria was the inspiration as Argentina shrugged off the absence of Lionel Messi to defeat holders Chile 2-1 in their open-ing Copa America Cen-tenario game in Santa Clara on Monday. Paris Saint-Germain star Di Maria -- reeling from the death of his grand-mother only hours earlier -- scored one goal and set up another as the two-time world champions avenged their defeat to

Chile in last year’s Copa America final. Di Maria opened the scoring on 51 minutes and emotionally held a T-shirt up to the sky emblazoned with the message: “Grandma, I will miss you so much.” Moments later Di Maria then set up Argentina’s second for Ever Banega, to complete a man-of-the-match performance. “I had to play, I wanted to play, my grandmother was so proud that I played for the national team,” Di Maria said during a post-match television in-

terview before breaking down in tears. Argentina coach Gerardo Martino revealed afterwards Di Maria had kept his loss a secret from him. “I just learned that five min-utes ago that his grand-mother died,” Martino said. “He didn’t tell me anything, he was feeling well to play.” Di Maria’s virtuoso display secured a deserved three points for Argentina, who will now fancy their chances of topping Group D with games against Panama and Bolivia to come.

Is Chris Gayle disillu-sioned with cricket? The West Indies batting star, apart from hitting a cen-tury against England at the ICC World Twen-ty20, earlier this year, has done nothing much on the cricket field. He had a poor season with Indian Premier League runners-up Royal Chal-lengers Bangalore, man-aging only 227 runs from 10 matches. However, off the field the cricketer garnered a lot of atten-tion with his recent media statements directed at fe-male journalists. Starting from the infamous ‘Don’t blush, baby’comment during an interview with Mel McLaughlin in the course of the Big Bash League to his recent in-

ing. I have emailed all the requisite documents that were asked for in the ad-vertisement. “Whatever is required by the BCCI , I have provided them. If you ask me whether I am confident or not, all I can say is that my job was to

apply for the post and I have done that. I cannot comment on anything else,” said the 54-year-old. In an interview earli-er, Shastri called the time spent with the Indian team as his most memo-rable experience.

a six-wicket haul. South Africa’s spinners took six wickets in reply but were also laid into by Kieron Pollard, whose unbeaten 67 took West Indies to a four-wicket victory. “We can maybe try a different approach when a play-er like Pollard is on the attack, perhaps change up the lengths a little bit,” Phangiso said. “It’s something that we will need to work on -- how to counter a situation when a batsman is being pos-itive and on the attack,” he added. Against West Indies, Phangiso posted career-best figures of 3 for 40, which might have looked a lot more flatter-ing had Pollard not hit him for three enormous sixes.

has 12 direct entries and their combined ranking of 11 (Mirza is world no 1, while Bopanna is 10) makes them a shoo-in for the Rio draw. However, with Paes ranked at 46, it is most unlikely that the pairing of Mirza and Paes will make it into the Rio draw. The ITF is set to send national associa-tions the list of pairs eli-gible for the mixed draw on June 9. Subsequent to that, the All India Ten-nis Association (AITA) will announce the Indi-an tennis team for the Olympics. This time

around, the selectors are pretty clear that Mirza will get to play with a partner of her choice. As such, the pairing of Mir-za and Bopanna is set to be announced. Funnily enough though, the two have not combined yet to play in the Australian or the French Open. A little birdie tells me that they did not want to risk los-ing and thus jeopardise their Olympic pairing given that Paes can never be counted out in mixed — no matter what kind of indifferent form he may be showing otherwise.

India’s state refiners may halt diesel imports after working out a temporary mechanism to resume buying the fuel from pri-vate processors if global diesel prices remain at current levels, two refin-ery sources said. State re-finers stepped up imports in recent months after private refiners refused to

continue absorbing sales tax and coastal freight costs, making the domes-tic fuel more expensive. Indian imports were a factor behind the stron-ger Asian gas-oil crack, which has been holding near $12 a barrel for the fifth straight session on June 6, after almost dou-bling to $11.74 on June 2 from this year’s low on April 6.
