Pakistan Day dinner: VK Singh leaves within minutes; I am not an Indian, says Yasin Malik Agency : New Delhi Former Army chief and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, VK Singh attended Pakistani envoy Abdul Basit's dinner in the national capital on Monday to celebrate Pakistan Day. Also in attendance was Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar. At the same time, where several Kashmiri separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik were also present at the dinner. Singh left the venue after staying there for a few minutes. Talking to a news channel, Malik said, "We are just here to attend the functions. I am not an Indian. We are disputed people. Our status are yet to be ascertained." Also speaking to the media before the dinner, separatist leader Hurriyat leader SAS Geelani said that talks were not on the agenda while attending Pakistan's National Day celebrations. He added, "Dialogues have happened more than 150 times but with no results at all. This is because India on the one hand says that it will go ahead with talks, while on the other hand says that J&K is an integral part of India," as per ANI. Geelani also said, "In 2010 we had given five pointers for debate. First India should accept disputed nature of J&K. Second, withdrawal of occupying forces. Third, withdrawal of black laws. Fourth, case against CRPF, police and local government for killing 128 of our men. Fifth, detainees to be released. The day India will acknowledge all these points, then dialogue will take place." On the other hand Talking to reporters Aiyar slammed the NDA government saying, "It was foolish to break down dialogue with Pakistan on grounds that High Commissioner met Hurriyat leaders." "Meeting between separatists and Pakistan envoy started during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's times (former Indian PM) and continued during our times. Meanwhile, ahead of attending the Pakistan Day function, Mirwaiz Friday night had met Pakistan High Commissioner to understand Islamabad's stand at the recent Foreign Secretary-level talks held between India and Pakistan besides informing him of the "ground situation" in the state. PM Modi invokes farmers’ children to pitch for Land Bill Agency : Hussainiwala Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday invoked the welfare of farmers’ children to justify the Land Bill as he maintained that efforts are being made to “mislead” the farming community over the new measure. Pitching for the proposed new legislation that is facing stiff resistance from almost all opposition parties, he said it is necessary to bring about development which will benefit the farmers and their families as well. “Efforts are being made to mislead farmers in various ways. I talked about it yesterday also in my ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme,” Mr. Modi said addressing an event organised in the memory of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their martyrdom day. He said if the nation makes progress, it will benefit the farmers as well as their future generations, many of whom want employment in areas other than farming. “If there is no development, what will happen to your children? Do you want them to live in ‘jhuggi jhopris’ (slums) of Delhi and Mumbai? Development will bring benefits for the farmer, their children as well as their villages,” the Prime Minister said. The controversial Bill was passed by Lok Sabha earlier this month but has got stuck in Rajya Sabha because of a united opposition which has stepped up its campaign against the measure. Talking about corruption, he said it had “destroyed” the country. Targeting the previous UPA government, he said that the coal-block allocation scam was “bigger” than assessed by the CAG. He said that the CAG’s assessment of the loss in the coal-block allocation scam was much less than what it actually was. When the CAG concluded that the loss was to the tune of Rs. 1.86 lakh crore, there was “disbelief about such a huge figure”. “Out of 204 coal blocks cancelled, only 20 have been auctioned so far and more than 180 are still left. Since an honest government is in place, Rs two lakh crore was deposited in the national treasury on account of auction of these 20 coal blocks,” Mr. Modi said, adding that it will benefit the poor. WC 2015 IND vs AUS: SCG set to turn Indian for Australia semifinal Agency : Sydney India fans are likely to outnumber their Australian counterparts when the two teams clash in the World Cup semi-final in Sydney on Thursday -- much to the annoyance of the home captain. Australia skipper Michael Clarke and team- mate David Warner sent out identical tweets, saying: "I call on all Australian cricket lovers to paint the SCG gold on Thursday. We need your support. #goldout" The hashtag, referring to the Australian team colours, has ironically caught the fancy of more Indian Twitter users than Australian. Organisers believe that 70 percent of tickets at the sold-out 42,000-capacity Sydney Cricket Ground have been bought by by India fans, threatening to create an environment reminiscent of the frenzied atmosphere of Eden Gardens in Kolkata. If the pitch suits spinners, as has been the case at the SCG in the past, co-hosts Australia may well feel as though they have been kicked out of their own party. Kartik Ayyalasomayajula, one of the founders of the Swami Army -- India's version of England's Barmy Army supporters group -- forecast the Australian team would be in for a hard time from fans on Thursday. "It will be very loud, very intimidating," Kartik told the Sydney-based Daily Telegraph newspaper. "It will feel like an away game for them. "The drummers will be going around the ground and people will be dancing, singing and cheering every run India score, every wicket they take. People will be going nuts." Agency : New Delhi After the drubbing received in Delhi, the BJP is taking no chances with its next electoral battle. The party has decided to begin its Bihar assembly campaign well in advance. Party President Amit Shah and Home Minister Rajnath Singh will land in Patna on 14 April to rally the troops to take on the formidable Nitish Kumar-Lalu Yadav alliance, which includes the Congress party. Though the 14 April event is not meant to be a public rally, the party leadership hopes to gather around one-and-a- half lakh grassroot workers from all parts of the state. The state BJP leadership hopes that a successful mobilisation of party workers and cadre will give it the momentum and electrify the opular mood. Assembly elections in the state are due in October- November. This would be Amit Shah’s first major appearance in Bihar. His last visit in January was a low- key one, involving the holding of strategy sessions with leaders and interacting with party workers in Patna. Shah is known for his aggressive approach and can thus be expected to launch a frontal attack on Nitish Kumar in his address to the rank and file. Nitish Kumar’s personalised political/ego battle against Narendra Modi is well known. It would thus be very interesting to see how Modi’s Man Friday wades into the battle in his first political outing. The Bihar poll is a prestigious battle for the BJP. It is equally so for the forces ranged against it. The Left may also join the Nitish-Lalu combine this time. If that happens, it would be the first time when so many political parties will formally join hands in an electoral alliance to challenge Modi. Besides testing Modi’s might vis-a-vis the Nitish-Lalu-Congress alliance, this election will present the BJP with its first realistic chance of leading a government in Bihar. Second, a victory here would restart the BJP’s bandwagon – which went into reverse gear after the Delhi assembly election results. But if the BJP loses Bihar, the opposition to it at the national level will also become aggressive. Given the high stakes, the BJP leadership, both at the centre and in the state, has begun poll preparations very early. Since the Bihar assembly session is on, state party leaders are using their weekends to conduct outstation tours to mobilise the cadre and address public meetings in the hinterland. Former Deputy Chief Minister and State BJP legislature leader Sushil Modi, for instance, was in Bettiah and in the tribal areas of Narkatiaganj last Saturday and Sunday. These tours are also being used to activate party workers at the district and block levels. Mobilisation for the 14 April rally is also underway. Shashi Kapoor to be conferred with Dada Saheb Phalke award Agency : New Delhi Yesteryear actor Shashi Kapoor has been selected for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award, the highest recognition for film personalities in India. Born in 1938, Kapoor is known for his roles in Namak Halaal, Satyam Shivam Sundaram and Deewar, and has acted in over 100 movies to date. In later years, he also turned to production, producing movies like 36 Chowringhee Lane and Junoon. The 77-year-old is the third member of the Kapoor family to get the prestigious award, following father Prithvi Raj Kapoor and elder brother Raj Kapoor. The award is reportedly given on the basis of recommendations of a committee of eminent people set up by the government.

Editors' Picks QUOTEOF THE

DAYThe Modi governmentis losing its shine abroadAfter the proverbial nine months in office, Narendra Modi— the ‘outsider’ who moved to Delhi as Prime Minister— remains on top of the political game. There is nochallenge in sight to his supremacy. His stature has notbeen diminished in any way by the opposition. Nor hashe been weakened by the challenges to his government, especially in Parliament, such as on the land Bill. Yet thereis a loss of shine, a denting of India’s image in theneighbourhood as well as on the world stage and subtlebut significant shifts in the perception of Modi sarkar. However, neither his critics nor the opposition can claimcredit for any of these. The BJP-led government alone isresponsible for the situation in which it finds itself. Thecontradictory positions on autonomy and federalism —such as rooting for the 13th Amendment in Sri Lanka butopposing Article 370 at home — is all too glaring to beglossed over. Prime Minister Modi calling for equal respectfor all citizens in Sri Lanka actually serves as a reminderof President Barack Obama’s repeated references toreligious intolerance in India; and, the urgent need to endthe attacks on minorities. In spite of the Prime Minister’semphasis on reforms for liberalising the economy, thecontinuing clampdown on freedoms, expressions andmovement smacks of illiberal political and bureaucratictendencies. These events and developments undermineIndia’s avowedly pluralistic culture and seriously damagethe country’s image in the eyes of a world that viewsModi’s India as a rising power on the cusp ofunprecedented development. Getting Obama as the R-Day chief guest was seen as a diplomatic coup that wouldfloor his opponents at home and make the world sit up.However, Obama’s graceless parting shot — “India willsucceed so long it is not splintered on religious lines —stirred an unsavoury debate that did little for Modi sarkaror India-US relations. Even before the uproar over hisJanuary 27 remark had abated, Obama dropped anotherpebble on February 6 in Washington: “India…where, inpast years, religious faiths have been targeted: intolerancethat would’ve shocked Gandhi”. This set off new ripples, which drew even more unwanted attention to theHindutva-driven valourising of Gandhi’s assassin, Godse, and the attempts to install his statues. Far from adiplomatic triumph, Obama’s visit had turned out to be apolitical cross. The Prime Minister has — more than once— condemned and expressed concern over the attackson Christians and churches. Nevertheless, incidents andtension are rising. Alongside such religious intolerance, there is also heavy-handed suppression of individualfreedom as evident in activist Priya Pillai being preventedfrom going abroad to testify before a group of BritishMPs. Ironically, instead of her aborted testimony —which authorities claimed would “negatively impact India’simage — it is the bar on her travelling that discredited thegovernment. Similarly, another threat to free expressionthat has attracted attention abroad are the “dictatorialways” of the new chief of the film censor board. At adifferent level, two other points are being debated indiplomatic circles. There is a thin line that dividesacceptable concern from meddlesome interest when itcomes to issues in another country.

Study reveals how air pollution & climatechange make your allergies worse

Agency : WashingtonA new study has provided adeeper insight into airpollution and climate changethat are involved in theincreasing prevalence ofallergies worldwide. A pairof air pollutants linked toclimate change could also bea major contributor to theunparalleled rise in thenumber of people sneezing, sniffling and wheezing duringallergy season. The gases, nitrogen dioxide and ground-level ozone, appear toprovoke chemical changes incertain airborne allergensthat could increase theirpotency. That, incombination with changes inglobal climate, could helpexplain why airborneallergies are becoming morecommon. In previous work,Poschl; Christopher Kampf,Ph.D.; Manabu Shiraiwa,Ph.D.; and colleagues at the

Max Planck Instituteexplored how allergy-causing substances arealtered in the air. Building onthat work, they decided todig deeper into how thathappens and examine howtraffic-related air pollutantscould increase the strength ofthese allergens. In laboratorytests and computersimulations, they studied theeffects of various levels ofozone and nitrogen dioxideon the major birch pollenallergen called Bet v 1. Theresearchers determined thatozone, the main componentof smog, oxidizes an aminoacid called tyrosine that helpsform Bet v 1 proteins. Thistransformation sets in motiona chain of chemical reactionsthat involves reactive oxygenintermediates and can bindproteins together, alteringtheir structures and theirpotential biological effects.
