THE GAFFER
LAST HOME GAME OF THE SEASON
Come on down to the Gate for our last
home game of the season vs Congleton
Town to celebrate Squires Gate’s fantastic
season!
Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion
Stadium for this afternoon’s home league fixture against
1874 Northwich FC. First of all may I welcome Northwich's
management team and all associated with the club. I hope you feel welcomed
and have a safe journey home.
I think I can say we had a decent Easter period. As much as we were disappoint-
ed with not beating our rivals AFC Blackpool, taking 7 points from a possible 9
since the Linnets defeat was pleasing. The lads knew they had let themselves
down at Runcorn and have reacted superbly to it ever since. I have set them a
target between now and the end of the season which is tough but definitely
achievable and if it is met it will cap a fine end to a fantastic season for all as-
sociated with Squires Gate FC.
Our opponents today have themselves had a very good 1st season in the
NWCFL Premier Division. I'm sure Ian and his staff are pleased with their sea-
sons work but will be looking to be promotion contenders this time next year.
We gained a valuable point at the Northwich a few weeks ago but as strange as
it might sound I feel that todays fixture at home will be harder for us to gain
any points. There’s no room for complacency in football and that is certainly
the case today.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again next week for our final home fix-
ture of the season…
UP THE GATE!

SQUIRES GATE
Dunn 31 ,Buchan 37
Squires Gate faced West Didsbury & Chorlton FC on Tuesday night as they looked to get back to winning
ways after going down 2-0 to league leaders Runcorn Linnets on Saturday. Gate made just the one change
from Saturdays loss with Alex McKendrick coming in for Zach Clark.
Gate started the game the better side and could have gone ahead early on, good link up play between Mur-
phy and Dunn but the latter couldn't convert Murphy's cross. Gate were a constant threat down Wests Right
hand side with Harry Dunn looking lively and full of confidence. Wests only real chance of the game came
after 20 minutes Baldwin Willis shooting but his drive was easily saved by Fletcher. Gate's opener came af-
ter a beautiful ball out to Dunn on the wing was controlled well he beat one man before driving the ball low
towards goal the ball was intercepted by the Didsbury defender and was out into his own net. Gate doubled
there lead with fine work again from Harry Dunn his ball back from the byline found the on rushing Buchan to
slot the ball past the goalkeeper to put Gate 2-0 up.
Into the second half and it was the home side that very much were the better of the two. Fletcher was called
Into action early on as the conditions became harder to play in due to rain and hail. It would be fair to say
that the home side had Gate rattled in the opening 20 and dominated the minutes. And they would make it
pay on 65 minutes when Gary Lilley jinked and jived through Gate midfield before Poking the ball through to
Daniel Russell who smashed the ball past Fletcher. What followed was a very professional and disciplined
30 minutes from Gate who made sure they secured the result and the three points. late on Mark Buchan and
Sub Rowley combining before the latter took a touch to many instead of shooting. But this wouldn't matter as
Gate went on to secure all 3 points and get back to winning ways.
After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said: It was a fantastic 3 points. We played really well in the
first half and deserved our lead. Harry Dunn was a constant threat and had a big impact in the 1st half. We
had to defend for long periods in the 2nd half but did so well enough to earn the 3 points. I'm really pleased
with the reaction to Saturdays game, we hope to kick
on from tonight and finish the season strong.
Gate are next in action on Saturday when they face
Runcorn Town at home, kick off 3pm.

RUNCORN TOWN GATE EGGSTEND FORM HEADING INTO DERBY
Squires Gate walked away with all three points on Saturday as they beat Runcorn Town ahead of Mondays derby away at AFC
Blackpool. It was a poor contest in truth but a game which had several talking points not least two penalties and a sending off.
Last time out the game ended 7-2 to Squires Gate when Gate travelled to Runcorn so revenge will have very much been on the
cards for the Runcorn players. Gate made one changed from Tuesday's win over West Didsbury with Josh Kay making his full
debut for the club after coming on as a sub for Alex Mckendrick who looks to be out for the rest of the season with a dislocated
shoulder.
It was the visitors Runcorn Town who made the better start to the game having plenty of possession of the ball but not really
threatening the Gate backline. The first half was halted on 15 minutes when the referee was taken ill. Luckily Premier League
official Michael Salisbury was present watching in the crowd after his game was called off earlier in the day. After a quick discus-
sion between the three men it was agreed he would run the line with the linesman taking over officiating the remainder of the
game. The stoppage in play seemed to do Gate the world of good and they went on to dominate the rest of the first half. Gate
had a succession of corners but couldn't capitalise from any of them. Mark Buchan was sent through when Josh Kay floated a
lovely ball over the top of the defence but Buchan pulled his shot wide of the far post. Gate were pilling on the pressure at the 30
minute mark with a goal looking ever more likely for the home side.
The pressure would pay off in the 35th minute when Harry Dunn was fouled in the corner of the box. Alex Murphy would step up
to convert the penalty to put Gate deservedly 1-0 up. That's how the first half would finish with Gate 1-0 up and very much in
control, with Fletcher in goal for Gate not really being tested throughout the half.
The second half started well for Gate with Josh Kay beating two men but his shot went way over the bar. Billy Mckenna had a
chance soon after but his pile driver could only find the edge of the post. Despite having early chances Gate struggled to really
control the second half with alot of wayward passing from all areas of the pitch. Runcorn showed better pressure and pressed
the ball alot more in the second half but didn't really have any impact up front to worry Gates defence. Gate perhaps made it
harder for themselves loosing the ball to silly things and bad passes allowing Runcorn into the game. Billy Mckenna had another
good chance just before being substituted but his header fell wide of the post from Alex Murphy's cross in. Gate had the chance
to add a second goal after they were awarded another penalty Harry Dunn again being fouled on the edge of the box, Murphy
would again step up to the set piece but this time Runcorn's keeper would dive the right way to save the spot kick. On the back
of this Runcorn had the chance at the other end to equalise Shanley jinking in and out of the defence but after good work put his
shot wide of the post.
Gate sealed the game in the 88th minute good link up play between Richards and Murphy down the right with the latter latching
onto Richards cross to score his and Gates second of the game to seal the points.
The win was somewhat marred in the dying seconds when debutant Josh Kay was
shown a second yellow leading to a red card with seconds to go. After the game
Gate manager Dave McCann said: Without being at our best I thought we deserved
our 3 points. We could and should have been more convincing in a lot more areas
on the pitch that would have made it an easier afternoon for us, but I shouldn't really
be complaining about another clean sheet and scoring 2 goals. We're looking for-
ward to Mondays derby now which has all the ingredients to be a cracking game.

SQUIRES GATE
STALEMATE SEES GATE NEAR RECORD 67 POINTS
Squires Gate made one change from the starting 11 that beat Runcorn Town on Saturday with Sean
Holmes coming in place of Alex Murphy who was ill. For a derby the atmosphere was rather tame and
calm unlike recent years.
The first half was a very scrappy affair. Harry Dunn had what was probably Gates best chance of the
half but even that couldn't be considering a clear cut chance. The winger was closed down quickly on
the edge of the box Blackpool with 6 men behind the ball making hard for any of Gates front line to
penetrate. Gate reacted to Blackpool's quick closing down of the front men by switching there play to
a more direct approach but even then they only had one noteworthy chance. Dunn again involved as
he was sent through by Chris Anderson but the winger couldn't latch onto the ball and Blackpool's
keeper was able to collect the ball at the edge of his box. Gate perhaps created the better attacking
chances in the first half but there really wasn't much in it with both teams looking average.
Afc Blackpool started with a spring in there step in the second half and looked determined to take the
game to Squires Gate. But like the first half the home side didn't really posses much threat in attack
and failed to really test Fletcher in net. But it was Gate who had the best chance after 10 minutes
Mark Buchan with time in the box but his shot possessed too much power and flew way over the goal.
What followed was a good attacking spell for Gate but both Westwood from the corner and Mckenna,
who chose to shoot rather than pass across goal, missed golden chances to put Gate ahead. It
looked like the home side had taken the lead around the 70th minute but to the home fans dismay the
gaol was ruled out for offside. That's
how it would end for the two teams on a
day when a win was necessary for the
home side to keep up their fight against
relegation but also would have helped
cement Gates top 6 finish the points
were shared.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS
“We would just like to thank everyone at Squires Gate for once again making us feel welcome this
season. It’s a great club to be a part of, and it’s been a pleasure doing a programme and we hope
you’ve all enjoyed reading it as much as we have enjoyed creating it. Here’s to many more years at
the club. Onwards and upwards!”
- Dan & Jay
Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for today’s game
against 1874 Northwich. First of all, thanks to everyone for attending today’s game
and purchasing a match day programme. We’re in the closing stages of what has been
a fantastic season for both of today’s sides.
Our opponents today currently sit 3rd in the league, and have proved what they are capable of after being pro-
moted to the Premier Division. Squires Gate on the other hand, started the season as one of the favourites to be
battling for survival. If this game was played at the start of the season, odds would have been stacked against
Squires Gate to even get a point.
With only 3 games remaining. It is fair to say that this season has thrown up some great moments for Gate
supporters, winning 7-2 at home to Alsager Town, and then doing it again away to Runcorn Town. Leading 2-
0 at FA Vase finalists Glossop North End, despite losing 3-2, was still a good achievement. One of my favourite
moments was going to Evo-Stick side Bamber Bridge in the FA Cup, where we were expected to be on the back of
a thrashing, yet still came away with a draw which earned us a replay.
Last weekend saw most Premier Division sides play two games over 3 days. 1874 Northwich kicked off their
Easter fixtures against struggling Bacup and the result reflected their positions as 1874 won 6-2. Meanwhile,
Squires Gate hosted Runcorn Town, and in what was a scrappy game of football, Gate came away with all 3
points despite Alex Murphy missing a penalty. On Easter Monday, also known as “Derby Day”, 1874 played
landlords Winsford United and recorded a 3-1 win. Squires Gate travelled down the road to AFC Blackpool and
played out a stalemate draw.
In injury news. Alex Murphy returns after missing Monday’s derby as he went home ill. Alex McKendrick is
doubtful with a bruised elbow. Ryan Riley will be available after picking up an injury that saw him miss 3
months. Robbie Bromley is no longer part of Squires Gate, as he has signed for Evo Stick side Clitheroe and will
join up with ex Gate players Seydou Bamba and Sam Dickinson.
Next season, we will be looking forward to a trip to new Premier Division sides Padiham and Atherton Colleries.
Padiham will be joining us from the Evo Stick, and Atherton Colleries will be joining us from the First Division.
We are still yet to find out who will be leaving the Premier Division, as the season draws to a close. Stockport
Sports sadly went into administration, leaving only two spaces in the race for survival. Bacup, AFC Blackpool,
Barnoldswick Town and St Helens will all be in the mix until the final day, with Bacup 7 points behind but
they have also got 3 games in hand over the others.
The last time today’s sides met was 3 weeks ago, in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw. Squires Gate led the game
until the 88th minute, when Christopher Lunn bundled home an equaliser. Mark Buchan had a chance to bag
all 3 points as he hit the post from 10 yards leading up to their goal. I hope you enjoy today’s game!!
TEAM MATES
Just like the famous questions on Soccer AM, we asked Gate
Goalkeeper Ben Fletcher questions about his team mates.
Best Trainer: “Mark Buchan. He always stays be-
hind after the session to get some extra shooting
practice in, if you believe it or not.”
Worst Trainer: “Got to be Billy McKenna, the lad just does what he
wants.”
Most Skilful: “Harry Dunn, because he’s the only skilful player
we’ve got.”
The Joker: “Got to give it to Anders after this one joke he came out
with and no one has managed to come up with anything better
yet.”
Fastest: “Danny Penswick, I know he doesn’t show it in the game,
but in training he is actually the fastest player we’ve got.”
Most Intelligent: “Got to be myself and I am sure the lads won’t
disagree.”
Least Intelligent: “Alex Murphy, the lad is just clueless.”
Worst dress sense: “Has to be Channy after what he was wearing
on the Christmas do.”
Worst Taste In Music: “Josh Kay, after what he put on before the
game against AFC Blackpool, it was shocking!!”
Who’s The Longest In The Shower: “Definitely Rico, always the
first in and the last out, every week without a fail.”
1874 NORTHWICH 1874 Northwich has only been in existence since Thursday 15th November 2012! For on that night that the members
of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run, democratic operated and
transparent club.
In keeping with its democratic structure, the name of the new club was decided upon by the members and is a con-
scious reference to the long and proud heritage of the Vics - which the followers of 1874 clearly wished to
acknowledge. In a similar way, the club crest and colours are both a nod to the past but they are also sufficiently differ-
ent to set 1874 apart from the oldest of the Northwich clubs.
Indeed, since establishing 1874, its 200 plus members have very much concentrated on creating and reinforcing the
individual identity of their new the club. This has certainly been helped by the amazing amount of 1874 leisurewear
that the supporters have purchased since the first items went on sale in the spring of 2013. Within weeks of their
launch, 1874 replica team shirts, coats, hoodies, umbrellas, scarves, base-ball caps, woollen hats and polo-shirts were
common apparel in and around the town. Indeed, the sale of these and other 1874 branded goods reached five-figures
in the first season alone
The first game ended in a 3-1 win for 1874 and better was to come three days later when in the club picked up its first
trophy in only its second game by beating fellow fans-run club AFC Rushden and Diamonds 3-0 to lift the Supporters
Direct Shield - a success that was highlighted on the front page of "The Non-League Paper", Not bad for an eight-
month old club!
But just as we had resigned ourselves to a second season playing First Division football, news came through about the
sudden and unfortunate demise of Formby and as a result the league management committee asked 1874 if we would
be prepared to step up into the Premier Division - an offer that was readily accepted!
Excellent progress was also made in both the Cheshire Senior Cup and North West Counties League Cup with 1874
making their respective exits at the Quarter and Semi-final stages respectively.
The defence certainly played its part in 1874`s strong showing as just 28 goals were conceded in 36 league games, a
point underlined by the fact that keeper Matt Conkie was voted as "Keeper of the Month" on no less than four occa-
sions - a league record. At the other end, the hugely impressive Mike Brandon notched 37 goals, a performance that
went a long way to him being picked as "Player of the Season" by the fans at the end of year presentation dinner which
was attended by 120 supporters, players and back-room staff.
The supporters and players have also enjoyed a number of other well attended social events, the highlight of which is
probably the 1874 Beer Festival which attracts over 300 people and raises over £3000 for the club! A 200+ club has
also been established and the money generated from this initiative will help reduce the clubs reliance on gate receipts
as its principal source of income.
So, all in all, it has been a remarkable period of time since 1874 was born and everyone connected with the club are
delighted with the massive progress we have made in such a short space of time. With our second season now upon
us, we can proudly say that we have achieved what we set out to create - a sustainable, democratic, fans-run commu-
nity-focussed club that we and the town of Northwich can be justifiably proud of.
But we cannot, and do not intend to, sit on our laurels. The club is determined to continue to develop and progress,
albeit in a sustainable and stable manner which will allow the club to grow and meet its stated aims and objectives.
