Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against 1874 Northwich. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.

It has been just a week since we were last here at Brocstedes Park “hosting” landlords Ashton Athletic as we looked to bounce back from losing the relegation “six-pointer” at Barnoldswick Town. There was an early set back when Sam Bailey curled a free kick home on the right hand side of the penalty area but Town responded well and James Rushton-Woods worked hard up front on his own causing problems for the Ashton backline but it frequently it appeared that he was lacking the support he needed to link up with another Town man to prolong the attacks and cause more of a threat. The game was pretty even as neither side gave their respective goalkeepers too much to worry about and the destination of the points was decided by another set-piece as this time a corner was headed home by centre back Ian Rowlands on 74 minutes. Whilst the performance and endeavour was much improved from the previous Saturday at Barnoldswick we still look like we lack a firepower upfront, not aided by the injury to skipper Andy Gillespie which saw him miss the game against Ashton and indeed joint manager/goalkeeper Jay Foulds didn’t have a real save to make all evening. The battle at the bottom of the table to stay in the top flight of the NWCL is hotting up with Barnoldswick starting to pick up point closing the gap on ourselves to just one point, they have however played a game more and AFC Blackpool are a further three points back but have played three more matches than us. Even Bacup at the foot of the table have started to pick up points having secured a win and a draw in their last two outings. Things could be changing quite a bit at the bottom next Monday evening when the fate of Stockport Sports will be decided by the member clubs of the league with an EGM having been called to expel the club and expunge their record for the season. If they were to be expelled this would see Town on stay in 18th with 21 points from 29 games, Barnoldswick in 19th with 20 from 31 games, AFC Blackpool in 20th with 19 from 33 games and Bacup in 21st with 10 from 27 games. It would also see just two relegation placed in 20th & 21st and would mean that no team would be guaranteed to be relegated as 22nd place would be “filled” by Stockport Sports. This is the first meeting between the two clubs but there will be some familiar faces in the opposition contingent with 1874 Northwich manager Ian Street being a former Town man both on the playing and coaching side and former Town player under Lee Riley, Daley Woods likely to be in the Northwich playing squad this evening. There will be plenty of familiar North West Counties League names and faces in the Northwich squad as Streety had build a strong and experienced outfit including Matt Conkie, Stuart Wellstead, Mike Brandon, Matty Ward and Lee Duckworth. 1874 in only their second ever season are flying high at the top of the NWCL Premier Division and will provide a stern challenge

for Town this evening. Both ourselves and 1874 Northwich were inactive at the weekend as Town did not have a scheduled contest and 1874 were defeated by the weather as their Barton Stadium pitch was waterlogged. In Town Today It is probably something of a misnomer to describe the next few

paragraphs as a history of our football club. After all, by its very definition, the word ‘history’ suggests that 1874 Northwich have a proud and glorious past that stretches over many years and its long-standing supporters can look back warmly over many past campaigns – good and bad – with a great deal of pride, nostalgia and fondness.

Actually, nothing can be further from the truth! You see, 1874 Northwich has only been in existence since Thursday 15th November 2012! For on that night that the members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted

overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run, democratic operated and transparent club.

For those who elected to follow this path, this decision was not easy. Indeed, for most it was heart-breaking as most who voted to set up 1874 had followed ‘The Vics’ loyally for many years, worked selflessly for the club and had shared in all its highs and lows (largely the latter!) in the end, after numerous off the field sagas and financial controversies – which culminated in the loss of the hugely impressive Victoria Stadium – the majority decided that they could no longer identify themselves with the club that they had once loved and that something radical had to be done.

There was an overwhelming desire to bring the game of football back as the central focus, to re-build links with the people and businesses of Northwich and to put control of this new club into the hands of those people who ultimately would have its best interests at heart – the fans. And so, the members came together and took the step of calling into existence their new football club. In keeping with its democratic structure, the name of the new club was decided upon by the members and is a conscious reference to the long and proud heritage of the Vics - which the followers of 1874 clearly wished to acknowledge. In a similar way, the club crest and colours are both a nod to the past but they are also sufficiently different to set 1874 apart from the oldest of the Northwich clubs. Indeed, since establishing 1874, its 200 plus members have very much concentrated on creating and reinforcing the individual identity of their new the club. This has certainly been helped by the amazing amount of 1874 leisurewear that the supporters have purchased since the first items went on sale in the spring of 2013. Within weeks of their launch, 1874 replica team shirts, coats, hoodies, umbrellas, scarves, baseball caps, woollen hats and polo-shirts were common apparel in and around the town. Indeed, the sale of these and other 1874 branded goods reached five-figures in the first season alone!

The months immediately after the formation of 1874 proved to be very busy as the members worked hard to convince a number of key organisations that ensure that the club was a viable proposition that could successfully operate a side in the National Leagues System. Firstly there was the seemingly simple task of registering the club with the FA and applying for membership of the North West Counties League. Next on the agenda was finding a home for the club and this was achieved in the March of 2013 when a two-year ground-share agreement was brokered with neighbours Winsford United. Finally, following an hour-long interview by the FA at St George’s Park, 1874’s application to join the First Division of the North West Counties League was accepted! During this period the club had also appointed former Warrington, Winsford and Ashton Athletic boss Ian Street agreed to become 1874’s first manager and he quickly started to assemble a playing squad that would be capable of competing in the First Division.

As the summer progressed, the ‘good news’ stories about 1874 kept on coming. Firstly came the announcement that the club had agreed two-season deal with well respected local company Britannia Carpets to become the club’s main sponsors – a move that clearly demonstrates 1874’s desire to create a new and positive relationship with the business community in the Mid-Cheshire area. Next up was the news that the well respected voluntary organisation ‘Ciarans Cause’ were to become the clubs nominated charity for the next couple of years. The aim of this initiative is to raise funds to supply defibrillators to local schools and junior football clubs and, by doing so, help prevent the needless heartbreak that many families have had to suffer as a result of the tragic and needless deaths

1874 Northwich of their children from sudden heart failure. Finally, all the hard work and effort that everyone had put in was to come to a head on the evening of Wednesday 10 July 2013 when 1874 played their first ever game against local side Lostock Gralam. Prior to this game, there was still a nagging doubt amongst many members whether we had “done the right thing” and if the fledgling outfit would be able to attract sufficient support needed to make the new club a viable proposition.

We needn’t have worried. For, on that warm and balmy July evening, just short of 400 fans - the majority of who proudly sported the kit and colours of the new club - turned out to see the start of something different, something new and, most importantly, something that they had a direct say in! The first game ended in a 3-1 win for 1874 and better was to come three days later when in the club picked up its first trophy in only its second game by beating fellow fans-run club AFC Rushden and Diamonds 3-0 to lift the Supporters Direct Shield – a success that was highlighted on the front page of ‘The Non-League Paper’, Not bad for an eight-month old club!

The next major occasion was the staging of the first competitive fixture on August 3rd when Oldham Boro visited the Barton Stadium. Just under 500 fans turned up to see a little bit of history being made and although they didn’t see their team start with a win - the game ended 1-1 – the sheer joy and enthusiasm for ‘their’ club that was demonstrated that afternoon was both obvious and abundant. This level of support wasn’t a flash in the pan either as during our first season 1874’s average home league attendance was 320 – which put the club in the top 100 best supported clubs in non-league football. This total was boosted by the record breaking attendance of 541 who flocked into the Barton Stadium in early October for the fans-lead ‘Bring a Mate Day’ initiative.

On the park, things were as impressive as Ian Street’s men hit the top spot in mid-October and remained in the thick of the promotion race until the very last week of the season. However, there was to be no fairytale ending to the clubs’ first campaign as previous seasons’ champions Formby pipped Ian Street’s side to the second promotion spot on goal difference but just as we had resigned ourselves to a second season playing First Division football, news came through about the sudden and unfortunate demise of Formby and as a result the league management committee asked 1874 if we

would be prepared to step up into the Premier Division – an offer that was readily accepted! Excellent progress was also made in both the Cheshire Senior Cup and North-West Counties League Cup with 1874 making their respective exits at the Quarter and Semi-final stages.

The defence certainly played its part in 1874’s strong showing as just 28 goals were conceded in 36 league games, a point underlined by the fact that ‘keeper Matt Conkie was voted as ‘Keeper of the Month’ on no less than four occasions – a league record.

At the other end, the hugely impressive Mike Brandon notched 37 goals, a performance that went a long way to him being picked as ‘Player of the Season’ by the fans at the end of year presentation dinner

From the Chair Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our first time opponents 1874 Northwich. A special warm welcome to the ‘Greens’ manager Ian Street who is well known at Town having been a player and part of our management team in times gone

by. Of course we wish him very well, with the exception of this evening and our return fixture on Tuesday 3rd March. We also welcome tonight’s match sponsor Alan Gibbons of The Track King and his family who are first time club sponsors - many thanks for your support. Last Saturday we were without a game and a number of league postponements saw little hane at the bottom end of the table. However, Barnoldswick Town picked up a valuable point with a 1-1 draw as they hosted Winsford United. Barlick now become our closest ‘relegation’ rivals with Town holding a single point advantage over our Lancashire opponents and we also have the benefit of a game in hand. 1874’s planned home game against Silsden also failed to beat the weather and since the start of 2015 they have only played five games, losing three away from home (Maine Road 1-0, Crewe Alex 1-0 and Witton Albion 3-2) a 4-2 home win over West Didsbury & Chorlton while last time out they battled out

a 1-1 draw with our landlords Ashton Athletic here at Brocstedes Park. Last Tuesday evening we continued our poor form with a 0-2 reverse to Ashton Athletic and we must now dig deep to pick up much needed points in our battle for survival. With the 1st team’s inactivity I took the opportunity to take in the U17s on Sunday morning - despite to sleet, snow and freezing conditions the youngsters and their visitors Leigh Genesis U17s put on a good show in a game that finished 2-2. The U18s have also had a great time since the turn of the year and Sunday’s 5-2 win over AFC Fylde Youth at Edge Hill University saw them record 4 wins and 3 draws from 7 outings this year. A great testimony to the work of new manager Cairns Hardie and his coaches Ell and Alex. Don’t forget all the fixtures, results, photos, etc from all our teams are available on the club website. NWCFL News Litherland REMYCA are looking to recruit new coaches for

the junior and youth teams at the club. The recruitment

drive comes at a time when the club is looking to build and

develop the youth structure and aim for FA Community

Charter Status.

Media Officer Gary Langley explained: "We are first and foremost looking for a

Coach for our Development Group sides in the 6-10 years old age group.

"The role is an important one for us as a club and as a result would benefit someone with previous

coaching experience, although for the right person we will offer all of the logistical support that we as

a step 6 North West Counties League Club can offer. Elsewhere we are also looking for coaches for

specific youth teams under the Litherland REMYCA banner.

"We are a club looking to progress and build upon the massive steps we have taken forwards over the

last 18-24 months, and as we move towards our aim of Community Charter status we are looking for

people who could join us and be a part of it. Again, we will offer full support to anyone who thinks

they have something to offer".

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

NWCFL Update The North West Counties League's sole representative in this season's F.A Carlsberg Vase competition, Glossop North End, kept their Wembley dreams alive with a 3-1 victory over Northern League side Dunston UTS in Saturday's replay in the North East, but they required extra time to complete the task. The Hillmen got off to the worst possible start when they went a goal down after just four minutes, when a deflected shot from Gary Ormston wrong footed Glossop keeper

Greg Hall, but with 13 minutes remaining Matt Russell fired in a cracking equaliser to take the game into extra time. Four minutes in, captain Dave Young fired Glossop ahead, and five minutes later Kieran Lugsden added a third to put Glossop in the driving seat. Their victory sees them travel to Northern Counties East League side Shaw Lane Aquaforce in the last eight of the national competition this coming Saturday. In the Reusch First Division Cup, only one game out of the four scheduled this weekend took place and that was on Friday evening when a brace from Jordan Cover gave Atherton Collieries a 2-0 victory over hosts Barnton. The weather also took its toll on the League fixtures with three games in the Premier Division falling to waterlogged pitches and one in the First Division. With none of the top four sides in the Premier Division in League action, Squires Gate took the opportunity to narrow the gap on the leading pack with a 2-1 over AFC Liverpool. The Fylde coast side are fifth and drew level on points with fourth placed 1874 Northwich. Bootle moved into sixth spot with a 3-2 win at Nelson. Elsewhere, Congleton Town won 2-1 at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton, while a solitary Johnathon Hardy goal gave Abbey Hey a 1-0 victory at Runcorn Town. Barnoldswick Town and Winsford United shared a point a piece following a 1-1 draw. In the First Division, leaders Cammell Laird 1907 opened up a four point lead at the top with a 3-0 victory over Cheadle Town. Holker Old Boys missed the opportunity to narrow the gap on the leading pack with a 2-2 draw against Wigan Robin Park to remain fourth. Widnes recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory at Daisy Hill while Eccleshall won by the odd goal in five at home to Irlam.

1874 Northwich have announced that players Mathew Ward and Neil Chappell, and manager Ian Street, have committed their futures to the club. The trio have signed contracts for the remainder of this season and for next season. Both players put pen to paper before training earlier this week saying they: “are thrilled to be a part of the future of the club, that they are really enjoying playing and being involved with the club and their fellow players, and are very much looking forward and hopeful that they can be a big part of moving the club forward on the pitch”.

Also signing a similar length of time deal is manager Ian Street who said, “When the club suggested the offer of remaining with them a few weeks ago, I had no hesitation in saying yes, "I have really enjoyed my time here and the club and supporters have been fantastic in all aspects. I want to be a big part of all this and want to repay a lot of people’s faith in me by doing the best that I can both on and off the pitch for them”. “I am over the moon that Matty Ward and Neil Chappell have shown the enthusiasm to be here as well. I can never fault their effort and committment, and they sum up what we are all about. We now have a few building blocks in place and a good foundation to work from for a bright future”. Club News #RND15 Town are playing there part in this year’s Red Nose Day 2015 by supporting a number of fundraising activities in the build up to 13th March 2015. Every two years, since 1988, Red Nose fundraising for Comic Relief has been inspiring the nation to help change the lives of people in the UK and Africa. It ’s a fantastic six weeks of fundraising culminating with a fun-filled night of TV

comedy and entertainment on 13th March 2015. 2015 is set to be a big year for Comic Relief. To date, they have raised more than £950 million. Toyota GB have become an official partner of Red Nose Day 2015, reflecting their global vision and commitment to improving lives around the world. The whole Toyota family is getting together with each Centre taking the opportunity to reach out to their local community to raise funds.

Match Report Brocstedes Derby - landlords beat tenants

Tuesday 17th February 2015 St Helens Town 0-2 Ashton Athletic

St. Helens Town slipped to an five successive league reverse on Tuesday evening, losing 2-0 in their “home” game against their high-flying landlords at

Brocstedes Park. Ashton Athletic currently stand third in the NW Counties Premier Division table and they were in full control throughout, limiting St. Helens to only a handful of half-chances, none of which troubled player-manager Jason Foulds in the visitors’ goal. Ashton took the lead after 12 minutes, Sam Bailey scoring with a free kick. Town tried hard to equalise, but with several key players missing from the makeshift forward line, they were dependent upon Athletic making an error or two, which never looked likely. In the absence of Andy Gillespie and Chad Whyte, both nursing injuries and Karl Bell who was unavailable, James Rushton-Woods was pressed into action in the centre-forward berth and, though his pace stretched the Ashton defence, his only efforts at goal went high and wide. Debutant Liam Hynes tried hard and Danny Vincent, previously used at centre-half, did well deputising for injury victim Cole Ashton in midfield, but the more accomplished Ashton midfield controlled the game without ever needing to engage fourth gear. Town did well to restrict Athletic to a single goal for three quarters of the game, but the result was confirmed when captain Ian Rowlands netted after 74 minutes with a rather scrappy finish. Rory Crowther in the home goal had a solid game and saved two certain goals with a flick around the base of his left post and a tip over the bar. St. Helens introduced three substitutes late in the game and there was an encouraging cameo performance from young Frazer Findlay, who tormented the visitors ’ defence with several breaks, which ultimately came to nothing, but showed plenty of promise and initiative. St. Helens Town have no game on Saturday and are next in action against fourth-placed 1874 Northwich at home on Tuesday, followed by the visit of Nelson to Brocstedes Park on Saturday, 28 th February. Nevertheless, they will be looking this weekend with interest at the results of Barnoldswick ’s

If, as seems likely, Stockport Sports are expelled from the league by their fellow clubs on 2nd March, Town will lose three points, as will Barnoldswick, but AFC Blackpool will be docked a single point, which will shorten up the gaps and put St. Helens under further pressure as they seek to preserve their unbroken tenure of the Premier Division, which they have enjoyed since the league’s inception in 1982. With only 11 games remaining, all against teams above them in the table, a return to winning ways is becoming increasingly urgent. Glyn Jones
