DANNY

PENSWICK Good afternoon everyone,

First of all I would like to welcome committee members and supporters of AFC Blackpool. This game is going to

prove vital for both sides, with both of us scrapping in a relegation battle. I would like to think that we are, as a

club, heading towards the right direction despite our recent dip in form over the past couple of weeks.

“Options will be key with the games coming thick and fast over the Easter break”

Games are coming thick and fast for the lads, so this will start to show how we cope with our squad depth, and

options will be key. On Saturday at Cammell Laird, they had a good set up and game plan and weren’t allowing us

to play our football. They passed the ball well, and had the bite that we were missing. Woods made some great

saves to keep us in the game, and Westwood was solid at the back. As a team we are improving every week. We

try to take each game at a time, as I’ve said before we can only beat what’s in front of us.

“They had a good set up and game plan, and weren’t allowing us to play our football”

I’ve been quite surprised with AFC Blackpool this season, they’ve got some decent players in their squad who can

cause us problems today, but I feel that we are well prepared for derby day and we are raring to go. Both teams

know each other well and with us both down towards the bottom, it’s going to be vital for us to be on the top of

our game.

“They’ve got some decent players in their squad who can cause us trouble today”

We continue to strengthen the squad with returning players from injury, so we have a fully fit squad ready for

the game. The mood among the team is positive, and we feel that we are more than capable of picking up all

three points. It’s a must.

“The mood among the team is positive…”

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for coming down this afternoon, and thanks for your support. We host

Abbey Hey at home on Saturday. I hope to see you all then.

“Up the Gate!!”

Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD)

Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets

and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club

where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.

Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship)

Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence

on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.

Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship)

After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to

play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place

in the 2015/16 season.

Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd)

One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to

tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous

occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of

Clubman of the Year 2014/15.

Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)

A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a

linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent

success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.

Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)

Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays

and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet,

or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.

Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)

Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was bene-

ficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to

have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.

Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship)

Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the

pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.

Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship)

Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny

Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the

squad.

Page 5: Squires Gate vs AFC Blackpool

Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)

Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex

manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a

game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but

he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.

Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)

The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the

right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a

big influence on games when in the mood.

Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship)

Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde

and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates

and is very good at holding the ball up.

Ashley Rowley (Sponsored by TravelCare World)

Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He

scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact

this season.

Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)

Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14

season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game un-

derstanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.

Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)

Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His work-

manlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last

season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this

season.

Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)

Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in

2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t

take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also

play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up

top and to fire Gate up the table.

Ryan Tanser (Available for sponsorship)

Ryan joined the club in October and came off the bench in the 5-2 defeat away at Atherton

Collieries. He scored his first goal for the club on his first full debut in our 5-1 win over

Maine Road in the MEN United cup. He will bring goals to the team for sure.

Gate left frustrated after tight game

at The Royal British Legion Stadi-

um on Tuesday night loosing 3-1

against Winsford. Squires Gate host-

ed Winsford United on Tuesday

night, looking to continue their good

form that's seen them loose just one

of their last seven games.

Gate come into the game on the

back of a 1-1 draw away at Congle-

ton last Saturday. The homeside

took the lead before Ryan Tanser

continued his good form to equalise.

Gate made three changes from Sat-

urday's team with Jamie Gibson

returning to the bench after being

unavailable and Ash Rowley joining

him after recovering from injury.

Also coming into the team keeper

Nathan Thompson who replaced

Josh Woods who was unavailable.

The game started in favour of Wins-

ford with the mid table side still

looking like they had something to

play for. The visitors didn't give Gate

time on the ball and dominated in

midfield where they outnumbered

Gate. Gate struggled to get the ball

forward and find with either Buchan

or Tanser up front until they'd

settled around 15 minutes in.

Mark Buchan did well to get past player/

manager Lee Duckworth in the corner

but his ball to find his strike partner, just

fell the wrong side of him.

After either side had early chances, the

game turned very end to end. Gate had a

chance from a corner after Mckennas

shot was deflected into Highams path

who won the corner. From the corner

Winsford cleared and went down the

other end to narrowly miss wide of the

post.

Gate would take the lead in the game

after 21 minutes. A quick long throw

from Ferguson sailed over the Winsford

defence to find Buchan. He ran onto the

ball and hit it first time past the helpless

keeper. The Scotsman showing his quali-

ty with the first time finish.

Winsford always posed a threat through-

out the game and equalised on 34

minutes. The ball played diagonal to

Taylor's feet on the wing. He took the

ball down and beat Ferguson before

striking across goal into the opposite

corner.

The game continued to be an end to end

game with both teams looking to take

the lead. First McKenna then Tanser

having half chances but both failing to

find the target.

The second half saw Winsford start the

better of the two teams and Gate chasing

the game as the visitors looked to keep

possession The second half saw a lot of half

chances for both but neither really had the

quality to take the lead. Had Winsford had

better quality up front they could have

been in the lead with several chances on

goal.

Winsford did take the lead but it could have

been avoided for Gate. Mistakes at the back

saw Kyle Riley slip the ball under Thompson

and but the visitors in the lead.

Then the turning point came in the game

and Gates spirits rose. Winsfords centre

back sent off for a second yellow lifting

Gates spirit.

Chances for Gibson and Trout followed but

Gate really were unlucky not till hit the

target. Winsford scored a third soon after,

another mistake at the back allowing Riley

in again to add his second.

The loss ends Gates unbeaten run but Gate

manager Danny Penswick isn't too upset

and believe they can put things right on

Saturday. With others around Gate drop-

ping points they'll be looking to get back to

winning ways when they visit Cammell Laird

on Saturday.

AARON FLEMING The winger come striker is a threat

cutting in off the left hand side with

his lightning pace.

The former AFC Fylde man has

found himself in and out of the

team but when he plays he tends to

perform.

The winger has found the net five

times so far this season including

the 2-1 defeat at Atherton Collieries

last week.

CHARLIE WATERS A lot like Fleming, Waters is direct

and pace down the right hand side.

Another former Gate player who

struggled to break into the first

team at the start of the season.

Since he signed for the Mechanics,

he has become a regular starter and

has caused teams problems.

He will be looking to find a weak-

ness in the Gate defence in order to

create chances for AFC.

PAUL CARROLL The experienced ex Gate defender

will always give his all and has a

knack of giving that extra 10% for

derby day.

Carroll will be key to Blackpool's

chances of coming away with a

clean sheet.

The versatile defender can fit in

Squires Gate made two changes to

the side that lost to Winsford United

on Tuesday night when they made

the trip to Cammell Laird 1907 on

Saturday.

Keeper Josh Woods returned in be-

tween the sticks to play a full 90

through illness and Billy McKenna

dropped to the bench to be replaced

by Jamie Gibson. Gate also had to

make a late change just before kick

off with Mike Hall coming in for Alex

Colquhoun.

Both teams made a lively start to the

game but Lairds had the better

chances early on. The home side

looked a good passing side and re-

stricted Gates possession of the ball.

Gates first clear chance of the game

didn't really come till the thirteenth

minute. Mark Buchan sending Ryan

Tanser clear but the strikers shot

was pushed wide by the keeper from

a tight angle. The home side looked

patient on the ball and constantly

looked to play around Gate who at

times looked wooden and off the

beat.

Ryan Tanser again had another good

chance for Gate on seventeenth

minute but he couldn't keep his

header down from the corner.

Tanser was the real spark for Gate

first half having another chance

shortly after but his shot went wide

when he cut inside.

Mark Buchan did well to close down the

Lairds keeper on thirty three minutes but

his clearance rebounded off Buchans

knee and out. At the other end Josh

Woods, playing through illness, pulled of

a superb save to his right with own hand

to deny Lairds.

It would take the homeside just four

minutes after that save to take the lead.

The goal came to easy for Gates liking.

The defence standing off Paul Foy for

him to stroke the ball into the bottom

corner. The goal came just two minutes

before half time and was perhaps a tad

harsh on Gate.

Perhaps Gates best chance of the whole

game came on 52 minutes. Joe Noblet

taking the ball from the keepers hands

after he spilt it. But his cross from the

edge of the box went straight back to

the keeper with both Tanser and Buchan

waiting.

Unfortunately two minutes later Lairds

found the net again. A needless Freekick

given away just outside Gates box. Jay

Clare stepped up for Lairds and fired the

ball straight in from the Freekick. A su-

perb finish.

With conceding the second goal Gate

had a resurgence and started battling for

the ball abit more. Stayte went close

with a shot just over the bar before

down the other end Josh Woods made

another great save to deny Craig Cairns.

Ash Rowley came on as a sub and almost

made an instant impact. He cut inside but

was tackled before he could shoot. Mark

Buchan picked up the loose ball from the

tackle but the shot was straight at the keep-

er.

The homeside had a great chance to make it

3-0 on 70 minutes when they outnumbered

Gate on the attack but luckily for Gate the

pull back was poor and the ball was cleared.

Gate had the last chance of the game but

Mark Buchan pulled the ball wide from Ryan

Tansers pull back.

The loss keeps Gate down just above the

relegation zone though with others loosing

points aswell Gate hadn't dropped position.

AFC Blackpool was formed in 1947 under the name of Blackpool Metal Mechanics and played at Stanley Park for two years before mov-

ing to the current Jepson Way ground.

They played in local leagues before taking the step up to join the West Lancashire League. During this period in local league football

they won many awards, taking the Division Two title of the Fylde District League in 1950/51 and in Division One were champions twice

and runners-up three times in five consecutive years between 1953/54 and 1957/58. Numerous local cup competitions were also won,

including the Lancashire Junior Shield in 1957/58, a competition they were to win again in 1960/61.

As the 50's drew to a close, Blackpool Mechanics decided to take the next step up and join the West Lancashire League. They were an

almost immediate success, being runners-up in 1959/60 and champions for the next two seasons. Various cups and trophies from local

competitions still regularly found their way to Jepson Way.

The club then took another step up the football ladder by joining the Lancashire Combination. The jump in standard meant the cups and

honours that had poured into the trophy room dried up and it was not until the turn of the decade before many more honours were to

come their way.

In 1972/73 they won the Lancashire Combination Bridge Shield and in 1974/75 they finished runners-up in the league, just one point

behind champions Darwen.

AFC Blackpool prevail on Derby day as Squires Gate drop into the relegation zone.

It was the away side's frontline who had the better of the first 45, their constant movement and vision led to the first goal in

the 13th minute. A ball in from the right hand side of the box met the foot of Mitch Newsham to finish well past Dave Rog-

erson.

The opening goal seemed to liven up the game for both sides with efforts from both sides in what was a tight end to the first

half.

As the second half got under way it was clear that Gate were up for a battle. As the clock wound down Gate had several

chances to equalise in the game. Chances falling to strikers Washburn and Haley but a combination of good saves and bad

misses meant the game stayed 1-0 to the away side. But after all Gates’ hard work, it was the away sides clinical strike force

who again prevailed, Mitch Newsham again scoring on the 17th minute. The home side looked to change the game, intro-

duced Charles Orji from the bench and it was the sub who scored, what would only be a consolation goal. Jack Sowerby

weaving through the Blackpool defence found the feet of Orji to slot past the Blackpool keeper in the 78thminute mark.

Gate’s day was made worse when on the 85th minute when Ben Singleton rifled a free kick past the helpless Dave Rogerson

making it Squires Gate 1-3 AFC Blackpool. The loss for Gate leaves them sitting in the bottom two on goal difference. Gate’s

last game of the season is against in form 6th place Ashton Athletic away on the 26th April with a 3 o'clock kick off.

SQUIRES GATE 1 FRIDAY 26TH DECEMBER 2014

AFC BLACKPOOL 0 15:00

It was right first half for both teams with both putting in strong tackles and showing real passion. Gates defence

had to be at its strongest when Gate were caught on the break early in the first half, the defence though more

than equal to Blackpools attack and the game stayed 0-0. Gate struggled to get a real hold on the game and

struggled to create a clear chance in the first half. Blackpool had their Chances but Gate made sure the game

remained scoreless at half time.

Into the second half the first thing Gate did was make a change Jake Forshaw coming on for Rob Henry. The

game was changed into the second half when Blackpool were reduced to 10 men, Muscroft judged to have lead

with his leg when jumping for a header resulting in a straight red. This seemed to give Gate the boost they were

looking for and they went on to dominate the second half. Gate made the break though shortly after the send-

ing off. From the corner kick Colquhoun headed the ball back into the box to find an unmarked Mark Buchan

who's header couldn't miss, the Scot opening the scoring to get his fourth for the season. Gate had chances to

double their lead and on another day perhaps would have but in extreme weather conditions luck just wasn't

on the home teams side. Gate pilled on the pressure late on to double their lead but looked understandably

The first half was a very scrappy affair. Harry Dunn had what was probably Gates best chance of the half but

even that couldn't be considering a clear cut chance. The winger was closed down quickly on the edge of the

box Blackpool with 6 men behind the ball making hard for any of Gates front line to penetrate. Gate reacted to

Blackpool's quick closing down of the front men by switching there play to a more direct approach but even

then they only had one noteworthy chance. Dunn again involved as he was sent through by Chris Anderson but

the winger couldn't latch onto the ball and Blackpool's keeper was able to collect the ball at the edge of his

box. Gate perhaps created the better attacking chances in the first half but there really wasn't much in it with

both teams looking average.

Afc Blackpool started with a spring in there step in the second half and looked determined to take the game to

Squires Gate. But like the first half the home side didn't really posses much threat in attack and failed to really

test Fletcher in net. But it was Gate who had the best chance after 10 minutes Mark Buchan with time in the

box but his shot possessed too much power and flew way over the goal. What followed was a good attacking

spell for Gate but both Westwood from the corner and Mckenna, who chose to shoot rather than pass across

goal, missed golden chances to put Gate ahead. It looked like the home side had taken the lead around the

What were your personal expectations before the season started?

Have you met them yet?

I wanted to hit a personal target of 20 goals for the season myself and I’ve nearly achieved that. I did expect

the team to finish higher but football is a funny old game these days.

Do you remember the first game you played for Squires Gate, what was the score? Did you score?

Yes, it was Glossop away and I played the second half. No goal. Got beat 3-2. If only I came on a bit earlier, eh?

A few players have said that you are a nightmare to defend against in training, which two players would you

love to play up against if you had the chance?

Any Celtic player or Danny Penswick. He's a bungalow.

Who would be your dream strike partner?

Suarez. Absolute baller. Just imagine us two up front,

we’d easily hit 70 goals a season and Gate would be in

the Football League in no time!

If you could bring 3 PL players to Squires Gate on a

free, who would you bring?

Sergio Aguero, Danny Drinkwater and Dele Ali. World

class players.

What is your favourite derby game to watch? Which is the most entertaining?

The old firm is my favourite to watch but the most entertaining has to be the el classico. Full of geniuses.

What has been the best goal you have ever scored? Do you remember your first goal for Gate?

The winner away at altrincham in

the FA cup for Witton Albion. My

first goal for Gate was Runcorn

town away in a 7-2 win.

If you were manager of a 5 a side

team and could pick 2 Gate play-

ers and 3 PL legends. Who would

you pick?

John Maguire , Brian Penswick,

Paul Gascoigne, Thierry Henry and

Roy Keane

Mark has been a great striker for us this season and has bagged 16

goals already and is our top scorer so far this season. He speaks to

us about his first game for gate and his memorable moment and his

derby favourites.

Do you prepare differently for derby games than you do usually? What is the feeling before the

game in the changing room?

It’s always a relaxed atmosphere in the changing room up until about 5 minutes before kick-off. Then

its final instructions from the Manager and game heads on.

What is your favourite derby game to watch? Do you passionately hate any team as a football fan?

Arsenal vs Spurs is always good to watch, especially with the team that Spurs have got this season.

Don’t have the energy to passionately support any team let alone hate any team.

Do you remember your first game for Squires Gate, what was the score?

Drew 1-1, can’t remember who it was against but I do remember playing a part in giving away a pen-

alty.

If you could bring in 3 PL players on a free to Squires Gate, who would you sign and why?

Stones – be good to have a centre back who can actually play football

Kante – be good to have a midfielder who can run, and he’s been the best player in the Premier

League this season.

Costa – be good to have an intimidating striker

If you were manager of a 5 a side team, and had to pick 2 Gate players and 3 PL legends. Who

would you pick?

Fletcher, Penswick, Keane, Henry, Zola

Do you remember your first goal for Squires Gate? Who was it against?

Poachers finish from a corner against AFC Liverpool, strikers instinct.

Is there any memorable/favourite games that you have played in?

Winning 3-2 in the Cup away from home last season. 2-0 down with 20 minutes to go I score a head-

er to make it 2-1, we then equalise with about 5 minutes to go, our CM then completes the come-

back with a last minute wonder strike to get the win.

What is your most memorable game within your time at Gate?

Same as above

What has been the best goal you have ever scored?

The best I’ve scored for Gate would be a header against Nelson last season. Free kick crossed in deep

to the back post, I tried to header it back across goal instead it inadvertently went in the top corner.

Josh has been a solid centre half for Squires Gate this campaign and has picked up quite a few man of the

match awards. He speaks to us about his derby day experiences, his first game for Gate and his memorable mo-

ment

Penswick took the reigns after the club parted company with Dave McCann.

Penswick chose to recall Stephen Higgins after he served his ban and

Mckendrick after his injury. Gate started the half on fire and could have scored

after 3 minutes. Penswick fired the freekick into the box but couldn’t find a Gate

man. From the goal kick Winsford went down the other end and had a chance of

their own. But Ben Fletcher came to Gates rescue to deny Winsford after the

attacker found space. Alex Colquhoun had the chance to open the scoring from

the corner but his shot floated over the bar. The game was controlled by Gate

throughout the first half with the home side seeing more of the ball and having

the best of the chances. Winsford opened the scoring against the run of play

after 16 minutes. The striker reading the flick on which beat Colquhoun found

the run of his teammate to score. Gate had a shout for a penalty turned down

on 25 minutes a good burst into the box from Mckendrick the defender seemed

to handball the ball but the ref waved away Gate’s claims. Gate were unlucky to

go into half time one goal down but couldn’t convert there chances.

The second half featured many chances again for Gate but the Blackpool side

struggled to capitalise on their dominance. Ash Rowley had the chance to grab a

goal back for Gate on 50 minutes from just inside the box. A good run from

McKenna found Rowley who spun his man but his shot was saved. Rowley was

involved again 5 minutes later when he found Alex Mckendrick on the edge of

the box but he chose to cut the ball back to the edge of the box instead of

across the face of goal and the ball was cleared. Billy McKenna was next to

attack the Winsford back line and showed good skill to get past his man but his

cross into the box couldn’t find any of the 3 Gate attackers waiting. Ryan Riley

had a chance to put Gate level after coming off the bench but his header went

over the bar. The damning blow for Gate came on 84 minutes when Winsford

broke on the counter attack. Gate lost the ball up top and Winsford broke to

find Danny Hudson he jinked past his marker and fired past Fletcher to put

Winsford 2-0 up and through to the next round.
