Transcript of Squires Gate vs 1874 Northwich
Josh, you returned to the club on Satur-
day for the first time since your move to
Barnsley FC. Just tells us how big an im-
pact Squires Gate FC has had on your
footballing career to date?
Having been given the chance to play
men's football has had a big impact on me
physically and mentally as it has taught
me a lot on the pitch. An example is the
players are more experienced and do cer-
tain things to try and put you off your
game which I learnt the hard way at first.
It's two months since you're move to Barnsley, How did the move come about?
The move came around from Barnsley watching me at squires gate and then monitoring my
process for a while and liked what they saw that's when they invited me in for a weeks trial at
the back end of January, I impressed them on the trial and they made the decision to offer me
a professional contract.
How are you finding the transition into full time football?
During the first few weeks of the full time football I was very drained but also I was excited and
ready to kick on straight away and get myself into the squad for my first game against Bolton
at home. Having played 2 games for the u21's now I am starting to get used to the full time
training and I'm hoping to push on further within the next 6 months.
Barnsley are well known for being the club to give John Stones a chance who is now an Eng-
land International, do you think that more clubs should be looking into Non League to pick
up young players like yourself a chance higher up?
Yes, I think that there is a lot of talent within the non leagues that doesn't get mentioned. I've
played against a few players in non league that I think could easily fit into a professional set up
having seen their ability. Some of the grounds you play on aren't great at all but that's where
players learn the physical side of the game which I personally think you need to be a player.
You're of course not the only former non league player to make the move to Barnsley recent-
ly with Shaun Tuton and Marc Roberts making the move. Is giving Non league players a
chance part of something that attracted yourself to Barnsley.
What attracted me to Barnsley is they take a good look into the non league divisions and they
also give youth a chance to show their ability which is what lads like me need to progress as
After his move to Barnsley, Kay returned to Squires Gate for our game against Alsager Town
where Mark Ashmore interviewed him about his time at Gate and what we can expect to
Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD)
Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets
and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club
where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.
Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship)
Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence
on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship)
After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to
play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place
in the 2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd)
One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to
tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous
occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of
Clubman of the Year 2014/15.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)
A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a
linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent
success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)
Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays
and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet,
or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was bene-
ficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to
have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship)
Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the
pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.
Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship)
Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny
Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the
squad.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)
Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex
manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a
game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but
he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)
The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the
right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a
big influence on games when in the mood.
Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship)
Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde
and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates
and is very good at holding the ball up.
Ashley Rowley (Sponsored by TravelCare World)
Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He
scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact
this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)
Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14
season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game un-
derstanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)
Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His work-
manlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last
season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this
season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)
Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in
2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t
take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also
play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up
top and to fire Gate up the table.
Ryan Tanser (Available for sponsorship)
Ryan joined the club in October and came off the bench in the 5-2 defeat away at Atherton
Collieries. He scored his first goal for the club on his first full debut in our 5-1 win over
Maine Road in the MEN United cup. He will bring goals to the team for sure.

Squires Gate hosted bottom of the
league Alsager in a big game at the
bottom of the NWCFL Premier Divi-
sion this Saturday. This was the first
meeting this season of the two sides
in a tie which last season produced a
superb 7-2 win for Squires Gate.
Gate made two changes to the
starting 11 from last Tuesday’s win
away at Nelson. Alex Mckendrick
came in for Anthony Stayte who was
unavailable and Mark Buchan came
in for Ryan Tanser who dropped to
the bench.
Gate made the worst possible start
to the game and went behind after
just two minutes. Westwoods head.
After having a chance of their own
from the corner, which the keeper
did well to take away from Buchan
and Colquhoun’s head’s the vistors
broke forward. A strange decision to
give a freekick to the away side on
the half way line allowed them to
play the ball into the edge of the
box. He found the attackers feet
who spun his marker and curled the
ball into the top corner.
Mark Buchan, in after several games out
injured had the chance of a quick equal-
iser a minute later but his fancy backheel
wasn’t strong enough and was collected
by the keeper. In a busy first half Woods
saved Gate inside the first 10 minutes
from going behind further in a one on
one. Gate had the next chance on 15
minutes when Buchan picked up a poor
clearance from the Alsager keeper. He
beat his man but Billy McKenna couldn’t
meet his cross at the back post. McKen-
na made up for his miss on 37 minutes
when he closed down the back pass to
the keeper. He scuffed his back pass
which bounced off Billy McKenna and
into the net. Gate could have taken the
lead a minute later with the momentum
in their favour. Joe Noblet hit the cross-
bar from outside the box with a lovely
curling shot before Billy McKenna could-
n’t adjust is body far enough and shot
over the bar. Alsager had the last chance
of the game when they played on with
Gate stood still thinking the ball was out
of play. Crofts burst past the static play-
ers and tried to curl the ball past Josh
Woods but he pulled out a brilliant save
to deny them.
Gate had some good spells of play in
Alsager’s half at the start of the second
half but couldn’t really penetrate Al-
sager’s defence.
Gate started the second half with an early
corner in the first minute but the Alsager
keeper did well to collect the ball off . Alex
Mckendrick had a great chance to score his
first of the season as he was sent through
on goal but the Alsager keeper did well to
smoother the ball at his feet.Alsager smelt
blood in the last 10 minutes and put Gate
under a lot of pressure. Unfortunately for
Gate they made the pressure count. In the
89th minute a long ball down the right found
the Alsager attacker who crossed the ball
into the back post where Leigh Skellern
tapped the ball in to win the game for Al-
sager.
Gate had a golden chance to equalise late
on when Westwood took the ball down and
fired a shot that rattled the crossbar.

Goals, comebacks, and last minute penalty saves were
all part of the picture painted by the seven games that
survived the weather at the weekend.
Despite only four games being played in the Premier
Division, the top three were all in action, and Runcorn
Linnets stay at the top after a 3-1 win at home to Pa-
diham.
After a team of Linnets volunteers worked hard to ensure the pitch
passed an inspection, they suffered an early setback when Kieron
Pickup put the visitors ahead in the 14th minute.
But Antony Hickey levelled for Linnets just after the half hour, and goals
from Kyle Hamid and Ryan Cox in the last 13 minutes moved Linnets
eight points clear at the top of the table, ahead of both Atherton Col-
lieries and Colne.
Colls are second on goal difference, and had to settle for a goalless draw
at AFC Liverpool, but there was a dramatic ending when the Reds were
awarded a penalty in the last minute, when Colls keeper Danny Taber-
ner was red carded for a professional foul.
Midfielder Dave Sherlock donned the goalkeeper’s gloves and earned
his side a point with a fine diving save from the spot kick.
Colne bounced back from their disappointing defeat at Colls at the start
of the week with a 2-1 win at Runcorn Town. A Joseph Gaughan opener
and a Ben Hoskin penalty gave the Reds a two goal advantage at the
break, which they until four minutes from the end, when a Paul Shanley
spot kick reduced the deficit.
Alsager Town missed the opportunity to narrow the gap on their relega-
tion rivals, and remain bottom of the table after falling to a single goal
defeat at home to Maine Road, with Connor Hughes scoring the deci-
sive goal a minute after the break for the visitors.

Squires Gate travelled to bottom of
the league Alsager for a big six point
game on Tuesday night.
The two teams had met 10 games
ago with the game ending 2-1 after a
late winner for Alsager. Since then
Gate hadn't played a game but Al-
sager had played twice since. They
lost both games and remained on
the same points as when they beat
Gate.
Gate had to make a late change to
the starting 11 when Alex Colqhoun
was injured in the warm up. He was
replaced by Alex Mckendrick.
Gate had two good Chances in the
opening 5 minutes but crosses from
McKenna and Tabser from either
side couldn't be met in the middle.
Alsagers first flurry into the Gate half
produced a Freekick for the home
side. They fired the ball into the box
where an Alsager attacker just
flicked the ball off the crossbar and
over.
Alsager would take the lead soon
after. A scramble in the box led to an
Alsager player going down between
two Gate players. He stepped up
and converted the penalty to give
the bottom side the lead. to beat the
centre backs. He saw the keeper off
the line on the penalty spot to chip
the ball over him and into the back
of the net.
Gate started the second half by making a
change bringing Mark Buchan on for Joe
Noblet. Alsager had a chance to make it
four on 54 minutes but Leigh Skellerns
header was over the bar.
Nathan Trout had the chance to equalise
on 13 minutes but he headed the
Freekick up into the air and then fired
over the bar.
Alsager made it 2-0 after 22 minutes.
Josh Westwood slowing down to appeal
the foul but the Alsager attacker carried
on and squared the ball across the box
to the waiting man to make it two. Gate
switched off at the back on 25 minutes
but luckily Alsager couldn't capitalise.
Alsager scored a second after 34
minutes. Not strong enough from Gate
down the left hand side allowed Lennon
to turn and shoot into the top corner.
Unfortunately for Gate the finish was a
good one.
Gate got a goal back just before half
time. Ryan Tanser thread through the
middle of the defence bar again. Alex
Mckendrick could have opened his goal
scoring for the season on 58 minutes but
he was judged to be offside after he
drifter in of the left hand side. Ryan
Tanser had the chance to add his second
of the game but he shot wide one on
one with the keeper. Just minutes later
Mark Buchan had the chance to chip the
keeper but he hit the ball the wrong side
of the net.
Gate chose to bring Ferguson on to replace
Alex Mckendrick and the move worked won-
ders. Jake Higham moved to the left wing
with Ferguson replacing him behind. Higham
found himself running late into the box soon
after the move to volley the ball home with
his weaker right foot to give Gate hope.
That goal gave Gate a great amount of confi-
dence and they made the pressure count on
74 minutes. Ryan Tanser in the right place at
the right time to run into the box and volley
the loose ball underneath the keeper to put
Gate deservedly level.
Billy McKenna had two chances in the last 10
minutes to win the game but first his shot
from the keepers clearance went over the
bar. Then lovely build up play lead to him
shooting over the bar.

It is probably something of a misnomer to describe the next few paragraphs as a history of our football club. After all, by its very defi-
nition, the word ‘history’ suggests that 1874 Northwich have a proud and glorious past that stretches over many years and its support-
ers can look back over past campaigns – good and bad – with a great deal of pride, nostalgia and fondness.
But actually, nothing can be further from the truth! You see, 1874 has only been in existence since the night of Thursday 15th Novem-
ber 2012 when disillusioned members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run
and democratically operated club.
For those who backed the move it was a heart-breaking decision as they had followed ‘The Vics’ loyally for many years, worked
selflessly for the club and had shared in all its highs and lows. But numerous off the field sagas and financial controversies – which cul-
minated in the loss of the hugely impressive Victoria Stadium – eventually lead the majority to decide that they could no longer identi-
fy themselves with the club that they had once loved and that something radical had to be done.
There was an overwhelming desire to bring the game of football back as the central focus, to re-build links with the people and busi-
nesses of Northwich and to put control of this new club into the hands of those people who ultimately would have its best interests at
heart – the fans.
In keeping with its democratic structure, the name of the new club was decided upon by the members and is a conscious reference to
the once proud heritage of the club that followers of 1874 used to follow. In a similar way, the club crest and colours are both a nod to
the past but they are also sufficiently different to make it clear to all that 1874 is something different, something new.

Squires Gate were on their travels again this weekend this time returning to Winsford where 1874 Northwich were the opponents.
Gate made the same trip two weeks ago when they drew 0-0 with Winsford. Gate opponents for today, 1874 Northwich are a fan
owned club in their first year in the North West Counties Premier Division. This is the first time the clubs have met in the league. 1874
sit two places above Gate in third position on 60 points whilst Gate sit fifth on 55 points. Gate made two changes to the team that drew
1-1 with league leaders Runcorn Linnets during the week, Danny Penswick returning in place of Zach Clark from suspension and Alex
McKendrick coming back onto the bench.
The game started at a quick pace with both teams looking to play with a quick tempo. 1874 had a good spell of pressure early on but
could create noting due to a combination of good defending by Gate and a lack of a killer instinct meant they could find any way
through. Gates first chance of the game came when Mark Buchan was fouled just outside the box and the striker would take the re-
sulting free kick but could only find the wall. Gates next chance was the best of the opening 20, good link up play between Dunn and
Buchan but Dunn's ball across the box couldn't find a Gate man. Gates pressure would finally pay off when they would take the lead on
the 25th minute. The ball thrown into the box and what seemed like a fairly easy catch for 1874 keeper Matt Conkie was made difficult
when Alex Murphy got his head to the ball before Conkie could claim. Murphy's quick reactions then saw him take the ball down and
slot into the empty net with Conkie grounded to score his 11th league goal of the season. That's how the two teams would go into half
time, just the one goal separating them but both teams very much still in the game.
The second half came but didn't affect either team who both still went for the win. Gates passing accuracy and closing down will surely
please the management team with this evident throughout the second half on what is a difficult pitch. Gate will also be happy with the
ability shown to keep a team that has scored 60 goals so far this season quiet. Gate restricting the home side to mostly long range shots
with Keeper Ben Fletcher not having much to do. Alex Murphy showed good vision five minutes into the second half when he found
space on the right hand side of the box but before he could get a shot away 1874 defender Lee Duckworth cleared the ball off his toe.
Gate had a golden chance to make it 2-0 and possibly to wrap up the game. With 1874 pushing forward for the equaliser Gate caught
them on the break 3 vs 3 and with the ball at his feet Harry Dunn chose to pass instead of shoot.. His ball found Mark Buchan but the
It was the visitors that started the quicker and with just 30 seconds on the clock won a corner. Gate did well to deal with the threat of
the early corner which was easily cleared. 1874 Northwich would see alot of the ball in the opening 10 minutes clearly with the intention
of scoring early to put their mark on what would undoubtedly be a tight game. Gates first chance came after 15 minutes, Brett Ferguson
bursting forward from left back unchallenged before releasing a rasping strike, unfortunately for the defender the wind caught his strike
which sent the ball off target and behind for a goal kick. Minutes later Gate had another chance this time from Mark Buchan, after a nice
chipped through ball from Alex Murphy, Buchan struggled to keep his shot down after hitting it first time and the ball flew over the cross
bar. Gate almost made it hard work for themselves when Westwood's backwards header fell short of its target, luckily for the home side
keeper Ben Fletcher was quick of his line to cut out any danger. The last chance of the first half would fall to Neil Chappell, the visitors
midfielder riffled a shot towards goal but Fletcher got down well behind the ball to comfortably save what could have been a tricky
shot.
The second half started much like the first ended both teams looking to get the ball forward and attack the game. Much like the last few
games though Gate struggled to really keep possession of the ball often loosing the ball through simple mistakes and sloppy passes not
finding a teammate. Gates only clear cut chance of the second half came when Josh Kay found his way into the box but his shot was
pulled wide of the post. 1874 sub Wellstead had the chance to open the scoring with his first touch after coming on, but his shot like
many others today went over the bar. Soon after Ben Fletcher made a quality save to deny the visitors but it would be the corner from is
save that would produce the first goal. The ball crossed into the near post deflected off Brett Ferguson to score to unfortunate own goal.
Despite throwing extra men forward Gate couldn't find an equaliser. That's how the game would end this being only the third time Gate
have lost at home this season.

MATT WOOLLEY
Locally based Matt is an exciting
prospect who was snapped up from
reigning Mid-Cheshire League
champions Knutsford towards the
end of 2013. Matt - who is normally
found occupying one of the central
midfield berths - has also had spells
at Witton Albion and most recently
Congleton Town.
He has made 25 appearances this
season but has only scored 1 goal.
However, he can boss the midfield
and create chances.
Snapped up from fellow NWCFL
Premier Division rivals Maine Road
during the summer, Matt is a live-
wire and mobile striker who has
already made an immediate impact
by breaking the twenty goals barrier
this term.
He also made 1874 history, scoring
4 times in a 9-0 FA Vase win over
Wigan Robin Park, this meant that
Matt became the first player to
score a competitive hat-trick.
Matt has netted 15 goals in 15
games for 1874 this campaign.
An accomplished defender who has
the ability to play in a number of
positions, tough-tackling Ryan
counts Winsford, Norton United,
Alsager Town and Tranmere Rovers
amongst his former clubs. His versa-
tility resulted in him starting all but
8 of 1874’s 49 games last season.
So far in the 2015/16 season, Ryan
has switched to play Centre Back
more than his usual Full Back posi-
tion but made this switch with ease,
putting in quality performances
earning high praise from the 1874
fans and that of the opposition.

IAN STREET
Appointed as 1874’s first ever manager in March 2013, 50 year old Ian has an impressive pedigree. Wigan born
and bred, Ian started his career with his home-town club in the mid-eighties and went on to give great service
for several Northwest based sides including Chorley, Horwich RMI, Bamber Bridge and Curzon Ashton. Horwich
RMI provided the highlight of his career when the un-fancied Lancashire outfit beat Conference high-fliers
Weymouth to lift the GMAC Cup in 1988.
Since graduating to the side lines, ‘Streety’ has guided a number of clubs including Warrington Town, Atherton
LR and Winsford United where he guided the Barton Stadium outfit to victory in the North-West Counties Chal-
lenge Cup in 2011.
Ian recently signed a deal to remain as manager of 1874 until the end of the 2015/16 season.
1874 Northwich are currently 4th in the NWCFL
Premier Division and have netted 60 goals this
campaign. We take a look at their main threats and
which players have played a big part this season.
Matt Beadle has netted 15 goals in 15 games, and
will be looking to find the net again today. Matt
Woolley has been the creator in midfield while
Ryan Mitchell has been solid at the back.
Here is a little bit of information about the ones to
watch.

Matthew PhillipsWe spoke to Swansea and Wales fan Matthew Phillips about recently ‘completing the 92’ and asked
After visiting all 92 Football League clubs, what would you say has been the best ground you have visited?
I would say the best ground out of the 92 is The Emirates, it looks different to the usual ‘new grounds’ around. It’s just a
shame that the atmosphere is always lacking.
Do you remember the score from the first game and ground you visited?
My first ground was with the Swans, a 2-0 defeat at Yeovil Town’s Huish Park.
What encouraged you to start your adventures?
Well I never initially started out to go to all 92 grounds, I was just lucky enough to start following the Swans away when we
made our rise from League 2, so I got to about 75 after our first season in the Premier League (Colchester, Chesterfield &
Rotherham had all new grounds by then too.)
Having seen a lot of games in your time, what has been the best game you have ever watched live?
Best game (non Swansea) would have to be Brazil 1-7 Germany in the World Cup semi final. It was so surreal, Brazil were 5-0
down at half time and their fans were crying. The whole ground was in shock.
Have you ever witnessed memorable moments for clubs you’ve visited?
Probably my favourite ever moment following the Swans has to be the goal from Darren Pratley from the halfway line against
Nottingham Forest in the play off semi final 2nd leg. We were under a lot of pressure for a while and the Liberty just erupted
when the ball hit the net. We were going to Wembley. But there have been quite a few others, winning 3-0 away to Valencia
in Europe, beating Chelsea away in the League Cup, getting promoted to the Prem and seeing us lift the League Cup.
What has been the best goal you have ever seen?
There has been a few, but Lee Trundle’s at the Millennium Stadium when we won the LDV Vans Trophy (JPT)
If you were to pick a 5 a side team of 5 players that you’ve seen live. Who would you pick?
Manuel Neuer, Ashley Williams, David Silva, Gareth Bale and Lionel Messi.
Do you have any favourite grounds?
Craven Cottage, I like their ground setting, and there aren’t many like that anymore. Arena Amazonian in Manaus is an im-
pressive stadium.
Which grounds are you looking forward to visiting this year?
Well I will be heading to France to watch Wales in the Euros so I’m looking forward to that whole experience. Maseille is one.
West Ham’s Olympic Stadium will be one for next season.
If you were a manger of a 5 a side team, and had to pick 5 players that you’ve seen live. Who would you pick ?
Never, Ashley Williams, David Siva, Bale and Messi
Do have any favourite grounds?
Craven Cottage, I liked their ground, setting and there aren’t many like that anymore. Arena Amazonian in Manaus Impres-
sive Stadium
If you were to pick a ‘dream team’ made up of 11 players you’ve watched in your time. Who would you pick?
Never (Germany/Bayern), Lahm (Germany), Ashley Williams (Swansea/Wales), Vincent Kompany (Belgium/Man City, Cafu
(Brazil), Ferrie Bodde ( Swansea), Leon Britton (Swansea), David Silva (Man City), Bale (Wales/Spurs) Messi (Argentina/
Barcelona), Neymar (Brazil/Barcelona)
How many games have you watched abroad? What was you favourite one?
I've watched loads of games abroad, in over 30 different countries. Favourite one has to be Israel 0-3 Wales. We totally
deserved the win that night and it was the moment I believed that we could qualify
Jack OwenWhat were your expectations before the season started? Have these been met so far?
My expectations before the season started was a top 4 finish, with the number of high quality
teams in this league there are no easy games, last season we finished 3rd place so anything
close to that would of been a success, also going far in a cup would of been a bonus.
What has been the best game you have seen this season?
Our 5-0 win at Alsager Town was the most pleasing as it was a totally dominant performance
which could of ended in double figures, however the best has to be Congleton Town away, 4-1
down with 20 minutes to go and managed to pull it back in the last few minutes, the fans were
brilliant that night, really stuck with the lads.
Who has the best opposition at the Barton Stadium this season?
Runcorn Linnets, they were solid all over the pitch and had a good way of playing the game, we
had injuries but they just looked very comfortable and it backed up why everyone choose them
as pre-season title favourites.
Any 1874 players that have impressed you this season that Gate fans should watch out for?
Ryan Jackson has got all the fans talking this season, he made a step up from Rudheath Social to
1874 In the summer, he's got pace, skill and goals, a real quality player who recently signed con-
tract terms with us to remain beyond this season. Also the front pair of Matt Beadle and Mike
Brandon are always in and around the goals, both link up well and have scored 38 goals be-
tween them.
What is the best goal you have ever seen? (Live and in general from any league
Sticking with the 1874 theme, Jamie Roe for Maine Road scored a brilliant overhead kick earlier
this season and last season AFC Blackpool's Kurt Willoughby scored from the half way line in
what was a amazing goal.
If you could sign 3 PL players for 1874 Northwich on a free transfer? Who would you sign and
why?
My team would be: Edwin van der Sar, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, Matt Beadle and Matty
Ward
What areas of the squad need improving if any?
Couldn't really pick a position that needs improving, just a bit more consistency and we should
be fine to push for the highest finish possible.
What are the ambitions for the rest of the campaign?
To match or beat last seasons finish of 3rd and to get to the final of the Mid Cheshire Senior
Stuart HopwoodLooking forward to Euro 2016, chairman Stuart Hopwood tells us who he would take to France, who
he thinks will be key for England and who would make his starting 11.

MY STARTING XI:
WHO WILL BE KEY?
Joe Hart He’s a top keeper and has the experience in big tournaments now. Miles better than
some of the ones we’ve had in the past and is definitely the best English keeper around at the
minute. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t start every game in the Euro’s.
Gary Cahill He’s a solid defender, takes no nonsense and will lead the defence. We need
someone to fill in Terrys position and Cahill can do just that I think. Him and John Stones will
be a good partnership for England at the back.
Jamie Vardy Without a doubt, he has been the best English striker this season and needs
the chance to prove himself on the big stage. Especially with the injuries we have at the mo-
ment, he can definitely step up to fill in for Rooney. I’d like to see him up front with Harry
Kane.
HOW FAR WILL WE GO?
Semi finals I’m confident in our younger players, and we have a good mix of experience. If we
can hit the ground running, gain some confidence ready for the bigger games then we can
take on anyone. It just depends which team turns up on the day, but I’d be delighted with
reaching the semi finals.

LAST SEASON
SQUIRES GATE 1
CONGLETON TOWN 1
Gate made the worst possible start to the game as after just two minutes into the first
half they were behind. A mix up between Ferguson and Westwood at the back led to the
foul on the Congleton attacker. From the free kick Congleton striker Scott McGowan
found himself in acres of space to easily finish to put the visitors into a 2 minute lead. It
would be fair to say that the visitors started the better of the two as they went on to
control the next 15 minutes of the game. It was after 20 minutes that Gate came back
into the game chances for both Mckenna and Buchan but neither really tested Eve in
net. After a good 10 minute spell of play by Gate Congleton again came back into the
game and finished the half the better team. Congleton would put together some lovely
passing moves knocking the ball around with confidence but didn't really test Fletcher in
net for Gate for the rest of the first half.
The second half was a closer affair with Gate coming back into the game as the half con-
tinued. Gate seemed to look to utilise their wide men more in the second half trying to
get in behind Congleton's backline. Congleton's midfield though were winning the im-
portant battles in the middle constantly winning the second balls to counter Gates
attack. One positive on show for the home side though was their willingness and deter-
mination not to give up. The persistence in attack and threat throughout the second half
from the home side was something to be applauded by all. Gate's hard work would pay
off as they mounted the pressure in the last 10 minutes. Gate manager Dave McCann
brought himself onto the pitch with 10 minutes left to lead the line and change the
game for Gate. The introduction of the manager coincided with a change of style for
Gate as they looked to deliver the ball long from deep.
Alongside Centre back Josh Westwood, now pushed up front, Gate possessed plenty to
aim for in the box. It was McCann who had a golden chance to equalise for Gate with 4
minutes left on the clock, but his first time volley went high over the bar much to the
dismay of the crowd. With literally the last kick off the game Gate would get there re-
ward for the hard work put in. The ball fired into the area fell to Centre back Josh West-
wood on the edge of the box quick footwork and clever thinking from the defender saw
him slip the ball through to Ashley Rowley inside the box . The winger, making his first
start since signing, ran clear in the box and slotted his shot past the keeper to rescue a
deserved point for Squires Gate.
