Getting people to events

Active Norfolk has focussed on closed workshops with organisations, most commonly colleges and workplaces (especially partner organisations).

• The CSP has specifically approached organisations where they believe introducing Sport Makers could help them hit their own targets.

• These organisations have usually been colleges, who may have to provide extra-curricular activities for students, and workplaces, many of whom have health and wellbeing targets.

• To encourage involvement in the programme, Active Norfolk offered an incentive of £10 (to be used in a sporting context) to every Sport Maker from that organisation who records 10+ hours.

• The CSP also tied Sport Makers into their Village Games, a multi-sport event organised for villages by the CSP. They held a Sport Makers event for all Village Games Coordinators, whose role is to encourage sports development in their local area.

• Additionally, the CSP has held an open event every two months, but only in built-up areas.

• Active Norfolk found that holding an open event in a rural area was too labour-intensive.

• The CSP have seen 850 people attend events, which is 65% of their registered Sport Makers.

Deployment

• The CSP work hard to get as many deployment opportunities on the system as possible.

They regularly remind community organisations, sports clubs and events that their opportunities will be seen by a large number of trained, willing volunteers.

• When working with colleges, the CSP’s Sport Maker lead works closely with tutors to help get Sport Makers deployed.

Contacts tutors prior to events and finds out their aims, as well as the desired outcome for the college.

Tailors events according to need. Post-event, the CSP remains in contact with the tutor, asking

them to take ownership of deployment.

• The CSP ensures that Sport Makers see a clear pathway to deployment during events. This helps them understand exactly what is expected of them post-event.

• The Sport Makers lead attends each event and is available as the first point of contact for Sport Makers looking for help with deployment.

Recording hours

• Active Norfolk has found that a prime motivator for students is improving their chances of employment. At college events, the CSP has ensured that students are aware that gaining a Sport Makers certificate for completing 10+ hours will set them apart as job applicants. They’ve also asked tutors to communicate this to students.

• The Sport Makers lead contacts Sport Makers by email at least once every fortnight to encourage them to record hours. Often, recording hours is not the main focus of the email but a reminder is always present in emails.

• The incentive of £10 per Sport Maker offered to organisations that sign up to the programme has helped increase the number of people who’ve recorded 10+ hours.

• The CSP runs regular prize draws within the organisations they work with. This gives Sport Makers a clear idea of the chance they have of winning and therefore encourages them to record hours. They have found that having less frequent draws with more substantial prizes has had a greater impact.
