Delivering Sport Makers to a NEET audience

The Black Country Consortium worked with a local training organisation to deliver Sport Makers to over 180 NEETs (not in education, employment or training). Read on to find out how they did it…

What happened?

• Through a contact at the FA, the CSP heard about Nova Training, an organisation which offers learning and job seeking activities to trainees aged 14-65. The CSP contacted them to see if they were interested in hosting Sport Makers events.

• Nova agreed to work with the CSP requesting that they jointly explore how Sport Makers could match their aims.

• The CSP ran a pilot event and produced a list of employed roles that trainees could potentially aim for as a result of their Sport Maker experience. This proved that the programme was suitable for Nova.

• The CSP and Nova then worked together to ensure that trainees attended events and that the events were in line with the aims and objectives of Nova. They kept other tutors aware of what the events were so that they could help prepare trainees for them.

• In total, nine events took place at the centres, two of which were organised in partnership with neighbouring CSPs.

• As a group the Sport Makers, aged 16-20, then decided to hold and take part in football sessions once a week. They lasted for between six and eight weeks and culminated in a cross-centre tournament featuring 180 people.

What worked?

Page 6: Csp case study delivering sport makers to a neet audience

• Linking with an organisation which provides learning and job seeking activities – this gave the CSP a readymade audience who were motivated to take part in Sport Makers as a potential route to employment.

• Outlining the outcomes and benefits of sessions before they begin – this helped trainees focus and gave them a goal to work towards.

• Using the tournament as an incentive – the chance to take part in a large tournament provided encouragement for the trainees to continue with their work as Sport Makers.

• Using the chance to take a qualification as an incentive – the CSP offered Sport Leaders and coaching qualifications to trainees in order to encourage them.

• Keeping the same facilitator for all events – this meant that the facilitator was familiar with the aims of Nova training and was able to structure sessions accordingly.

• Offering roles to non-sporty trainees - they were encouraged to take up support roles which included organising the tournament and marketing it to other trainees.

What didn’t work?

CSP Case Study

Page 9: Csp case study delivering sport makers to a neet audience

• Offering a wide range of sports at events – the CSP found that the majority of Sport Makers were interested in football with few registering interest in other sports. In retrospect, they believe it would’ve been better to present one or two key sports (while communicating the option to take up all sports) at the first event and then come back to the centres later with alternative sport options.

• All Sport Makers have recorded over 10 hours.

• There was an increase in trainees taking part in sport who were mainly from a non-sporting background/did not take part in any physical activity.

• Nova tutors from all centres reported an improvement from the trainees in classroom subjects.

• The non-sporty Sport Makers are now using the skills they’ve learned through Sport Makers in apprenticeships and leisure placements.

• The tournament was covered by local media.
