Advanced Joystick Controls.Two electro-hydraulic joysticks reducehand and wrist movement as much as78% compared to conventional levercontrols for greatly enhanced operatorefficiency. The intuitive pattern is easy tolearn, and provides the precise implementcontrol you expect from Caterpillar.

Ripper Control. The ripper control isergonomically positioned to allowsimple, comfortable operation.

Visibility. The exceptional forward viewmade possible by a unique raised cabdesign and a one-piece front window,helps improve operator confidence andproductivity. The large side windowsoffer a clear view of the moldboard heeland tandem tires. A wide rear windowprovides good visibility behind themachine.

Glare reducing paint on the front frame,lift arms and rear enclosure helps reduceglare, resulting in safer operation at night.

Cat Comfort Series Seat. The CatComfort Series air suspension seat hasan ergonomic high-back design, withextra thick contoured cushions andinfinitely adjustable lumbar support thatevenly distributes the operator’s weight.Multiple seat controls and armrestsare easy to adjust for optimal supportand comfort all day.

Controls and Switches. Reliable, long-life rocker switches are located on theright side cab post and front instrumentcluster, within easy reach for the operator.Controls and switches are backlit forincreased safety during night timeoperations.

Comfort and Convenience. Caterpillarhas built the most comfortable cab inthe industry by replacing the controllevers and steering wheel with twojoystick controls. Extra leg and footroom create a spacious, open cab.The cab includes built-in storage spacefor personal items such as a lunch box,cooler and coat. The cab floor is flushwith the bottom of the doors, makingit easy to sweep and keep clean.

Multiple adjustment capabilities for thearm rest, wrist rest and joystick podshelp keep the operator comfortablethroughout a long shift.

Modular HVAC System. The standardmodular heating, ventilation and airconditioning system is fully integratedinto the design of the cab. The modulardesign allows for easy replacementor repair with minimum downtime.Intelligent placement of vents providesconsistent climate control and clearwindows for every condition. The high-capacity system dehumidifies air andpressurizes the cab, circulating freshair while sealing out dust.

Low Interior Sound and VibrationLevels. Isolation mounts for the cab,engine and transmission significantlyreduce sound and vibration. The quietinterior with low vibration levels providea comfortable work environment.

Ease of Operation. The revolutionaryjoystick controls make the 24M easierto operate without sacrificing control.

The intuitive joystick control patternallows both new and experiencedoperators to become productive quickly.

Logical grouping of hydraulic functionsin the joysticks allow any operator toeasily control several functions at thesame time. This allows the operator tobe more productive and remaincomfortable throughout the work shift.

Intuitive Steering Control. The 24Mintroduces a breakthrough in joysticksteering control. This technologycreates a direct relationship betweenthe lean angle of the joystick and theturning angle of the steer tires.

A brake tensioning system holds thejoystick in position until the operatormoves it. In addition, the steeringcontrol automatically reduces steeringsensitivity at higher ground speeds forcomfortable and predictable control.

Electronic Throttle Control. ElectronicThrottle Control (ETC) provides theoperator with easy, precise, and consistentthrottle operation. An automatic andmanual mode on a single switch offersflexibility for different applicationsand operator preference.

Front Frame Structure. Continuous topand bottom plate construction providesconsistency and strength. The flangedbox section design removes welds fromhigh stress areas, improving reliabilityand durability.

Rear Frame Structure. Two steel platesrunning the full length of the rear frameare integrated with the box section hitch.This helps resist torsion loads and ensurestructural durability. The integrated steeltube unifies the rear frame and supportsthe engine, while helping the framewithstand heavy-duty applications.

Articulation Hitch. A large taperedroller bearing at the lower pivot carriesloads evenly and smoothly. A mechanicallocking pin prevents frame articulationto ensure safety when servicing ortransporting the machine.

Circle Construction. A one-piece forgedsteel circle is built to stand up to highstress loads and provide structuraldurability. The front 240° of circle teethare hardened to reduce wear and ensurecomponent reliability.

Adjustable Rear Circle Drive.An adjustable rear circle drive makesserviceability easier and faster, andalso reduces component wear bykeeping components tight.

Drawbar Construction. The A-framedrawbar features a box-section designfor high strength and optimum durability.

Yoke Plate. Full-length yoke plategives strength, support and protectionto the circle.

Aggressive Blade Angle. With a longwheelbase the operator can obtainaggressive moldboard angles, so materialrolls more freely along the length of theblade. This is particularly helpful whenhandling very dry materials or cohesivesoils. Better material control gets thejob done faster, requires less powerand saves fuel.

Replaceable Wear Inserts. Tough,durable wear inserts reduce rotationalfriction for maximum circle torque andlonger component life. They are locatedbetween the drawbar and circle, andbetween the support shoes and circle.High load-resistant brass wearstripsare placed between the blade mountinggroup and moldboard. This sacrificialwear system can be replaced easilyand helps keep components tightfor fine grading.

Moldboard. The optimal curvature andlarge throat clearance help move materialquickly and efficiently. Heat-treatedmoldboard rails, hardened cutting edgesand end bits, and large diameter boltsassure reliability and longer service life.

Push Plate/Counterweight. A frontmounted push plate/counterweight canbe added on the 24M.

Ripper. The 24M standard ripper is madeto penetrate tough material fast and ripthoroughly for easier material movementwith the moldboard. The ripper includesthree shanks with the ability to add fourmore if needed.

Smooth Shifting Transmission.The 24M combines several keyinnovations to ensure smooth, powerfulshifts throughout the gear range.

Electronically Controlled Shifting.The full Electronic Clutch PressureControl (ECPC) system smooths shiftingbetween all gears and directional changes.This provides outstanding control andalso extends the life of the transmissionby reducing stress on gears.

Lockup Clutch Torque Converter.Permits the machine to operate in directdrive for more efficient operation athigher torque converter output speeds.

Engine Over-Speed Protection.Helps protect the transmission andextend component life by preventingdownshifting until a safe travel speedhas been established.

Planetary Transmission. Balancedplanetary transmission with largediameter oil-cooled clutch packs providessuperior load distribution and heatdissipation, resulting in longertransmission life.

Modular Rear Axle. The 24M incorporatesa bolt-on modular rear axle design,which offers easy access to differentialcomponents, improves serviceabilityand contamination control, and lowersoperating costs.

Programmable Autoshift. The operatorcan easily customize various shiftparameters through Cat Messengerto match the specific applicationrequirement. This standard featureautomatically shifts the transmissionat optimal points so the operator canfocus on the work, improving safety,productivity and ease of operation.

Gear Selection. Six forward andthree reverse gears give the operator awide operating range. The specificallydesigned range of gears ensuresmaximum productivity in all miningapplications.

Automatic Differential Lock.This standard feature automaticallyunlocks the tandem differential duringa turn, and re-locks once the machine isstraight. A momentary override pedalcan be actuated with the operator’s leftheel if necessary. This helps make themachine easier to operate and providesadditional protection to lower powertrain components.

Front Axle. The Caterpillar® sealedspindle keeps the bearings free fromcontaminants and lubricated in alight-weight oil (1). This durable,low-maintenance design reduces yourowning and operating costs. Two taperedroller bearings (2) support the wheelspindle. The Cat “Live Spindle” designplaces the larger tapered roller bearingoutboard where the load is greater,extending bearing life.

Hydraulic Brakes. The oil bathed, multi-disc service brakes are hydraulicallyactuated, providing smooth predictablebraking and lower operating costs.With brakes located at each tandemwheel, the 24M offers large total brakesurface area, delivering dependablestopping power and longer brake life.

Parking Brake. The spring-applied,hydraulically released multi-discparking brake is a sealed, oil-cooleddesign extending component life andreducing the need for service.

Superior Lugging Performance.The Cat C18 engine meets specificperformance requirements for 24Mapplications. Hydraulic Demand Fan. The hydraulicdemand fan automatically adjustscooling fan speed according to enginecooling requirements. This systemreduces demands on the engine, puttingmore horsepower to the ground andimproving fuel efficiency.

Compression Brake. The optionalthree phase compression brake enableshigher travel speeds downhill, whilereducing wear on brake components.This improves overall productivityand lowers maintenance costs.

Advanced Electro-Hydraulic System.The 24M incorporates a state-of-the-artelectro-hydraulic system. This technologyis the foundation for revolutionarychanges of the machine and implementcontrols. Advanced joystick controlsprovide unmatched controllabilitywith precise and predictable hydraulicmovements, and the reliability youexpect from Caterpillar.

Load Sensing Hydraulics (PPPC).The time proven load-sensing systemand the advanced Proportional PriorityPressure-Compensating (PPPC, or“triple-PC”) electro-hydraulic valves onthe 24M are designed to provide superiorimplement control and enhancedmachine performance in all applications.Continuous matching of hydraulic flowand pressure to power demands createsless heat and reduces power consumption.

Consistent and Predictable Movement.PPPC valves have different flow ratesfor the head and rod ends of the cylinder.This ensures consistent extension andretraction speeds for each cylinder,and gives the operator a consistentand predictable response every timean implement control is moved.

Blade Float. Blade float is built into theblade lift control valves. The blade floatfeature allows the blade to move freelyunder its own weight. By floating bothcylinders, the blade can follow thecontours of the haul roads. Floating onlyone cylinder permits the toe of the bladeto follow a hard surface while theoperator controls the slope withthe other lift cylinder.

Variable Float. The optional variablefloat feature lets the operator select theamount of down force the blade haswhen it is in float. This allows theoperator to easily follow the contour ofthe haul road when removing only theloose material, increasing productivityand cutting edge life.

Balanced Flow. Hydraulic flow isproportioned to ensure all implementsoperate simultaneously with little effecton the engine or implement speeds.If demand exceeds pump capacity, allcylinder velocities are reduced by thesame ratio. The result is improvedproductivity in all applications.

Cat® XT™ Hose. Caterpillar hosetechnology allows high pressures formaximum power and reduced downtime.Intelligent routing minimizes exposureto damage. Hose clips prevent hoserubbing and excessive vibration forlower owning and operating costs.

Independent Oil Supply. Large, separatehydraulic oil supply prevents crosscontamination and provides proper oilcooling, which reduces heat build-upand extends component life.

Electronic Technician (Cat ET).Cat ET is a two-way communicationtool that gives service technicians easyaccess to stored diagnostic data andlets them configure the machineparameters through the Cat Data Link.This integrated feature reduces machinedowntime and lowers operating costs.

Diagnostics. Cat Messenger, combinedwith full systems integration, enhancesthe diagnostic capability of the 24M.Machine system errors are displayed intext as well as with fault codes, allowingservice technicians and operators toquickly analyze critical data, increasingmachine availability.

Machine Security System (MSS).The optional MSS uses electronicallycoded keys to limit usage by specificindividuals or times of the day.MSS deters theft, vandalism andunauthorized use.

Product Link. The optional Product Linksystem streamlines diagnostic efforts,and reduces downtime, maintenancescheduling and costs by providing acommunication flow of vital machinedata and location. Product Link givesautomatic updates on machine parameterssuch as machine hours, machinecondition, location, fault codesand alarms.

Automatic Blade Control. The optionalAccuGrade System automaticallycontrols the blade, improving operatorefficiency and productivity.

AccuGrade Attachment Ready Option.The AccuGrade system is fullyintegrated into the machine design,making installation quick and easy.Integral hydraulic and electricalcomponents are standard on the 24M(Grade Control Ready). Low Battery Elevated Idle. After the24M is at low idle for an extended periodand low system voltage is detected, idlespeed is raised. This ensures adequatesystem voltage and improves batteryreliability.

Automatic Engine Deration. Protects theC18 engine by automatically loweringengine torque output and alerting theoperator if critical conditions are detected.

Operator Presence System. The OperatorPresence System keeps the parkingbrake engaged and hydraulic implementsdisabled until the operator is seated andthe machine is ready for safe operation.

Secondary Steering System. The standardsecondary steering system automaticallyengages a ground driven hydraulic pumpin case of a drop in steering pressure,allowing the operator to steer themachine to a stop.

Speed Sensitive Steering. The steeringsoftware automatically provides aninfinitely variable ratio between thejoystick and the steer tires, resultingin less sensitive steering as the groundspeed increases.

Low Sound and Vibration Levels.Isolation mounts for the cab, engineand transmission maximize operatorcomfort and help to minimize soundand vibration. These modificationsprovide a quieter and more comfortableworking environment, optimizingoperator focus.

Hydraulic Lockout. A simple switchlocated in the cab disables all implementfunctions while still providing machinesteering control. This safety feature isespecially useful while the machineis roading.

Brake Systems. Brakes are located ateach tandem wheel to eliminate brakingloads on the power train. In addition,the brake systems are redundant andutilize accumulators to enable stoppingin case of machine failure, furtherincreasing operational safety.

Circle Drive Slip Clutches. Two standardcircle drive slip clutches protect thedrawbar, circle and moldboard fromshock loads when the blade encountersan immovable object. It also reduces thepossibility of abrupt directional changesin poor traction conditions, protectingthe machine, operator and surroundings.

Blade Lift Accumulators. This standardfeature uses accumulators to help absorbimpact loads to the moldboard byallowing vertical blade travel. Blade liftaccumulators reduce unnecessary wearand help to avoid unintended machinemovement for increased operator safety.

Rearview Camera. Visibility is furtherenhanced with an optional Work AreaVision System (WAVS) through a178 mm (7 in) LCD color monitor inthe cab. Developed specifically forrugged applications, it improvesproductivity and increases operatorawareness of surroundings.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting.Optional HID lights can replace thestandard halogen lamps. The powerfulHID lights are four times brighter,improving night time visibility and safety.

Electrical Disconnect Switches.Internal and external disconnect switchesare standard on the 24M. They providelock-out of the electrical system to preventinadvertent starting of the machine.

Engine Shutoff Switch. An engineshutoff switch is located at ground levelon the left rear of the machine, allowinganyone nearby to shut it down in case ofan emergency.

Rear Fenders. To help reduce objectsflying from the tires, as well as a build-upof mud, snow or debris, optional rearfenders can be added.

Window Cleaning Platform. The optionalwindow-cleaning platform provides aneasier and safer access to all windowsand improves ingress/egress to the cabwith access from the rear.

Steel Tandem Walkways. Perforatedraised steel walkways cover the tandems.This provides a sturdy platform forstanding and walking, and additionalprotection for the brake lines. A stairwaylamp illuminates the walkway and canbe activated at ground level during entryand shut off with a switch in the cab.

Additional Safety Features. The 24Mhas many additional standard safetyfeatures, including laminated glasson the front windows, back-up lights,sounding alarm, lockable doors, blackglare-reducing paint on the front frame,engine enclosure and lift arms andconveniently located grab rails foradded safety.
