    ADVANCED RESOURCE ASSIGNMENT (ARA)

The Issue: Assignment Resources by Trade

Most asset-intensive companies manage large pools of resources consisting of

employees, contractors and equipment. Work assignments are usually created

and distributed by schedulers responsible for different disciplines of work. By

providing schedulers the ability to quickly match requirements to the available

resources by skill-set greatly increases their effectiveness. But without the

proper tools, the true potential of company resources will be underutilized.

    The Solution: Advanced Resource Assignment

By utilizing iSP3’s Accelerate Solution, planners and schedulers will gain access

to a wealth of tools allowing them to do their jobs more effectively and

efficiently. Additional options on the Scheduling Workbench provides the

ability to filter the planning process to a specific work order, group work

together by equipment, and view work order against child components. Such

simple capabilities make a huge difference in the planning process.

The Crew Availability by Craft program has been greatly enhanced to alloweasier identification of the resource loading by trades within the schedule. Italso assists in determining the number of hours that have been scheduled andunscheduled. This will help to ensure resources are loaded to their idealcapacity of 90%.

JD Edwards currently contains essential information on the resources and workrequirements. The scheduling application has been extended to includefunctionality where filters can be applied directly on the grid through the QBEline. Assigned work orders and tasks flow to the bottom of the list alleviatingthe daunting task of managing a schedule with hundreds of work orders. Themost significant enhancement of this product is its ability to match resources towork based on the default trade without user intervention. Simply by checkingoff two boxes and clicking the assign resource button, the work orders denotedwith the recommended trades will be assigned AUTOMATICALLY to theappropriate individuals with the respective trade qualifications.

Situations will always arise where automation may be limited, but the schedulerhas the ability to redistribute hours as needed at the trade or individual level, allowing significantly more control and precision. The date fields will open sochanges can be made directly without the need to switch between screens.

To effectively prepare a schedule it is vital that the availability of your resourcepool be up-to-date; therefore, a front-end application called Tradesman onLeave was developed to capture information that deviates from the normalschedule. Not only can individuals indicate time off, it is also possible to assignadditional hours that are available, such as overtime.

Although a fundamental aspect to managing schedules, the process of creatingthe calendar for rotating shift-type schedules is tedious and cumbersome. Theassumption that an individual works Monday to Friday on a weekly basis is notcommon practice for production sensitive industries. The Rotational Shift Inputprogram allows one to enter the pattern for the schedule in terms of night shift, day shift, and non-work day. Once the first work date and pattern have beenestablished the program will automatically generate the work schedule for anentire year.

Visualizing such a complex schedule on a calendar offers the user the ability to

know work assignments on any given day. During the assignment process,

individual schedules are accessible by clicking a single button.

The PM Projection module has experienced significant changes to produce more

accurate and reliable data, and The Update PM Projection process has been

optimally enhanced to ensure completely accurate, absolutely dependable

results. The PM Forecast Calculator is available allowing results to be shown

    on-screen and on-demand.

Finally, after the work is completed, metrics can be retrieved along with

contractor time for audit purposes. The Contractor Time Entry module

accumulates this information for the purpose of comparative metrics.

The Resource Assignment Global Constants contains settings to control how

many features of the Accelerate Solution will be used. For example, it was

recognized that different companies have unique configuration for identifying

equipment and component relationships. Although the parent-child relationship

is used extensively, it has been found that some companies use the remarks field

(KITL) or description 3 (DL03) to track the parent, such as, package numbers.

Metrics are extremely important to ensure contractor entries are mappedproperly to finance by trade; therefore, the naming convention for trades on thework center is used to identify this information against the payroll codes.

iSP3’s Accelerate Solution is a unique product that will complement yourcompany’s planning and scheduling needs. It will bring efficiencies to yourweekly meetings as well as providing metrics that are vital to continuousimprovement.
