Palma said. “When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, I had just started myjob,” she added.

Because Chris was new at her job and unable to take days off, she turned tothe American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery® program to help drive hermother to cancer treatment.

Last year in Orange County, local volunteer drivers drove 418 cancer patientsto and from their cancer treatments for a total of 15,974 rides. This year, it isestimated that 12,005 Orange County residents will hear the words, “you havecancer.”

To become a volunteer driver, you must have a valid California driver’s license.You must also have a safe, reliable vehicle, proof of automobile insurance, gooddriving history and be in good health.

Because getting to treatment should be the easy part.You can give back by volunteering to drive cancerpatients to treatment. Every day, hundreds of cancerpatients need a ride to and from treatment, andsome don’t have a way to get there.

Volunteer drivers of the Road to Recovery program give can-cer patients encouragement and support while donatingtheir time and the use of their vehicles. The American Can-cer Society coordinates the free program from recruitmentto screening to training volunteer drivers.

It almost seems to be an “epidemic” - people telling me when we first sit down; “I can’t believe I’m 65,I don’t feel that old."

I’m not too concerned when people have enough retirement income to help subsidize their “meager”social security checks for the next 20 or so years. I’m even not concerned when they tell me theyhave NO idea how Medicare works and that they didn’t know about late enrollment penalties, etc.; be-cause I can help with that. But I get a sinking feeling when I hear statements like “I don’t know whatI’m going to do, I can’t survive on my Social Security alone and when my husband was alive, he tookcare of this sort of stuff.”

Boy, the next time I need to drum up the motiva-tion to achieve a goal, I just need to remembermeeting Dylan Del Prado and witnessing whatthis remarkable young man has been able to ac-

complish in the face ofseemingly insurmount-able obstacles.

A Dana Point native,Dylan, 18, was diag-nosed with epilepsyeight years ago. Hehas what his mom,Kris, calls “pretty se-vere” grand malseizures (charaterizedby unconsciousness,convulsions and mus-cle rigidity).

among his recent achievements is completing a triathlon – a multi-sportevent (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run) involvingtremendous physical strength and endurance.

“I started doing triathlons for fun in the Summer of 2011,” says the recentDana Hills High School graduate. “After the third race, I discovered I coulduse my participation in these events to help raise awareness aboutepilepsy..”

When Dylan expressed an interest in participating in triathlons, his family(Kris, Dad Randy and sister Ryann, 21) was understandably worried thathe could have a seizure while running, riding the bike or even morefrightening, out in the water.

“I can feel it coming on, so when I know it’s about to happen, I can callfor help or get myself over to a safe spot,” says Dylan, who was able toget to the safety boat before a seizure during a recent event. During an-other triathlon, Dylan had a seizure while cycling. Once he regained con-sciousness, Dylan opted to continue – it was slow going, but he finished.

“After I raced after my first half Ironman, it became my goal to get outthere and show people that even with epilepsy that you can do stuff. Iwant to raise awareness so people understand what epilepsy is and whatit isn’t.”

Dylan initially participated in the triathlons without the appropriate gear(he didn’t have the money to purchase a good bike, full wetsuit or evennew running shoes that most of his counterparts in the competition weresporting), but he didn’t let that stop him.

It wasn’t long before his courage and determination caught the eye ofthe “powers-that-be” at the HITS Triathlon Series and sponsors like RaceDay Transport, which ships participants’ bikes and gear to the event. Hehas since been outfitted with some clothes and a new bike (he retiredthe old BMX bike he had been racing on).

Today, Dylan is hoping to gain additional sponsorship to raise the fundsnecessary to continue to participate in triathlons across the country andcontinue to raise awareness about epilepsy.

1. How did you perfect the lasertreatment for fungal nails?Ivar Roth, DPM: After performing thou-sands of laser fungal toenail treatments, Ideveloped and refined a proprietary proto-col coupled with the newest second gen-eration FDA approved laser. The new laserwith its digital readouts allows me to tellprecisely how much energy is required tokill the fungus. The initial treatment fee includes asecond treatment session in order to ensure your success.

2) What is the cost for laser toenailtreatment?IR: The treatments are broken downinto two easy to understand compo-nents. The first is the examinationand nail treatment which may be cov-ered by insurance. The second part isthe actual laser treatment which isnot covered. A one-time examinationfee of $500 is charged during the first

session which covers both the fee for the initial examination as well as the follow-up officevisit.
