Dear Friends,

Back to Church Sunday 25 September 2011

When I was at the Summer Fair at St John’s Mead School in July, I met a widow,whose husband’s funeral I had “done” a few weeks previously. During ourconversation, she spoke about how she used to come to St John’s and had thenlapsed due to various circumstances. But, she said, I would like to start comingagain.

I wonder how many other people there are who would say the same thing andmight well come along to one of our churches IF we invited them!

Back to Church Sunday started in 2004 in the Diocese of Manchester. Sincethen, other dioceses have joined in. In 2010, 3,500 churches from participatingdenominations welcomed back 51,000 people on Back to Church Sunday. Lastyear, we invited people to our churches as part of this initiative.

This year, Back to Church Sunday will be on Sunday 25 September andI’d really like everyone to think about who they would like to invite to the churchservice which will be held in your particular church on that day. People will comeif they are personally invited (as opposed to sticking a card through their door).But it requires us to have the courage to invite them.

If we genuinely care about whether our friends want the opportunity to worshipGod; to come to know Jesus in a deeper way; to resume their lost habit of goingto church, then please invite someone you know. We need to be bold! The worstthey can do is say “No”. The chances are they’ll say “Yes”. And they’ll come andsee – accompanied by us. Accompanying is key – I think we grossly underestimatehow difficult people find it to walk through the church door alone. It of courseputs an onus on us, as well, to make sure we are welcoming to them when theydo set foot in the church.

There will be invitation cards available for you to use – they will be in the fourchurches during August and September. Please take some and use them.

With love and prayers, Jane Kenchington

Wouldn't it be really 'cool' if a manknitted a nativity scene? - come on guys.

Why worry?Matthew 6:25 has much to say on thesubject: Don't worry about your life, whatto eat, or what to wear. It thenchallenges us by asking if we can add asingle hour to our lifespan by worrying.So do not worry about tomorrow, fortoday will bring worries of its own.

Or, to put it another way - "don't worry,dogs don't" (probably also applies tocats).

Women Bishops

Ten diocese, including Gloucester, havevoted in favour of women Bishops, whichrepresents nearly a quarter of the 44 inthe UK. The remainder must vote on thisdraft legislation before November. It willthen go to the General Synod in Yorknext year.

"One World, One Church"summarises our diocesan partnerships.Modern communications have made usmuch more aware of being citizens of aworld community torn apart by divisions,hatred and violence. Jesus challengeshis church to discover a unity thattranscends the world's tragic divisions.The Diocese of Gloucester has enteredon a number of partnerships withchurches in different parts of the world.Our first partnership was with Dornakaland Karnataka Central Dioceses in India.Later we formed a link with Västerås inSweden. In the wake of the 2008Lambeth Conference Bishop Michaelexplored a partnership betweenGloucester, El Camino Real, in America,and Western Tanganyika, in Africa, toencourage debate around some of theissues that threaten to divide theAnglican Communion. The differentpartnerships find varied expression. TheSouth India links have grown throughexchanges. The annual visits of youngpeople have been an especially richexperience for participants. The Swedishlink has found expression too throughexchange visits and the linking ofparishes with churches in the Västeråsdiocese. In our links with poorer parts ofthe world there are opportunities tosupport specific projects, honouring theMillennium Goals. More importantly,partnerships provide an opportunity forlearning from one another, for our visionof the Christian faith and mission to beenlarged and for our discipleship to be

enriched through meeting Christiansseeking to be faithful to God in verydifferent contexts to ours. The booklet"One World, One Church" offers helpfulinformation about our links and how tosupport them. We easily become veryparochial in our outlook, focusing only onour local church. Our partnershipsencourage us to widen our vision to takein the glorious reality of a church thatreaches across the world, sharing inGod's mission in richly varied ways inwidely diverse cultures.

Copies of the Diocese's "One World,One Church" booklet, which gives detailsof the Diocese's international links areavailable from Church House on 01452410022 and online atwww.gloucester.anglican.org/downloads/2164.pdf

Ride and stride onSeptember 10th

A day to make adifference for our churchRide and Stride, run by theGloucestershire Historic Churches Trust,is a great way to support this church andchurches across the county when theymost need help. It's an annualsponsored walk, bike or horse ride whichhappens on the second Saturday ofSeptember. That makes September 10tha date for the diary in 2011.Walkers and riders turn out to follow theirchosen route between churches which

open for the day. Many of them serverefreshments as well as checking you inand providing a friendly welcome,directions and moral support. Whetheryou prefer a solitary expedition, or to gowith family or a group of friends, youknow that you're joining thousands ofpeople countrywide to raise money foran important cause. As Ian Hislop hassaid, "In the old days the churches usedto worry about saving us. Now we haveto worry about saving them".

What's in it for you, this church and thecounty's churches? a perfect motivation to get out,

explore and enjoy yourself; the satisfaction of raising money and

taking part in a nationwide initiative; 50% of the money you raise goes to

the church of your choice; the chance to see inside some

historic gems which cannot alwaysbe open for visits;

 the chance for the church younominate to apply for a grant;

Even if you are unable to ride or stride,you can ask people to sponsor you toman your church or to carry out specifictasks while you are there.

The course was organised as part of thenational MSM curriculum by the DioceseMissioner, Andrew Braddock, and wassupported ecumenically throughout theregion. 25 Anglican, Baptist, Methodistand Salvation Army students took part,and on 9th July they 'passed out' duringa final session with Eucharist.Bishop John commissioned thegathering and then presented them allwith a signed certificate - and here isStuart receiving his, accompanied byAndrew Braddock and Bishop John.

Save your empties.Val is a frustrated Blue Peter followerand is hoping to make all sorts of nativitypeople and animals out of discardedplastic bottles. Shampoo bottles could beseen as the basic shape of angels, andwhen 'dressed' you wouldn't even knowthat they started life as a 'Dove'.As for camels, sheep and oxen, none ofwhich were actually present at thenativity, your imagination must be putinto top gear. So please save yourshapely plastic bottles and containers,and rifle your neighbours bin on re-cycling day and then present them to Val- but please bear in mind that she onlyhas a small car.

Up, up and away

As part of the Chipping Sodbury Festivalon Saturday 18 June 2011, a team ledby Paul & Jane Jones-Williams, from StJohn's Chipping Sodbury, spent the day

selling £1 tickets which were thenattached to 223 helium balloons. The

balloons all took to the air at 4.30pm thatafternoon.

Rumour has it that Paul was exhaustedafter personally blowing up all thoseballoons, and I can confirm that it washelium and not his 'hot air' which filledthem.

Oil pricesAccording to Bill Bryson the price of abarrel of oil in the USA in 1861 was $10but probably due to lack of interest andover production the price fell to 10 centsa year later. Today a barrel of oil isvalued at well over $100.
