MEnU 1 eighty 2Sweet and savory delights morning and night. MEnU 1 eighty 2 is not your average woodfired pizza restaurant.

As well as exquisite gourmet woodfired pizzas, they also offer a 'to die for' dessert pizza. Smothered with chocolate and sprinkled with marshmallows and coconut, cooked in the glowing woodfire oven, this pizza is reminiscent of nights by the camp fire toasting marshmallows.

MEnU 1 eighty 2 is also open for breakfast, offering its unique breakfast pizza, topped with bacon, tomatos, mushrooms, poached eggs and finished with a fresh salad and balsamic glaze.

There's nothing quite like a woodfired pizza in winter!

South Coast hiking - Hoddle’s Track and Saddleback In the 1830’s, surveyors Robert Hoddle hacked a route from the Southern Highlands to Kiama Harbour, making use of the high ridge and saddle connecting Saddleback Mountain and the promontory of Noorinan Mountain.

The views along the way and from both landmarks are truly impressive.

Finding the trackFrom the Princes Highway south of Kiama, turn north onto Foxground Road. Follow this for 5.4 kilometres; the final kilometre is unsealed and winds steeply through rainforest.

Hike highlights1. Uphill walk past farms and rainforest

2. Picturesque climb past pastures, boulders and a dam

3. Through rainforest. Views to escarpment, Seven Mile Beach and Coolangatta Mountain.

4. Emerge from canopy. Splendid views to Lake Illawarra, Port Kembla, Jamberoo and Minnamurra.

5. Hug mountain cliff base through rainforest. Uphill climb to an

amphitheatre below sheer, high cliffs.

6. Reach edge of Noorinan Mountain. Follow cliff edge to a rock platform with views over Foxground and to Saddleback Mountain.

7. Take Hoddle’s Track towards Saddleback. Steep uphill walk to

Saddleback Mountain.

8. Picnic area, viewing platform and Saddleback lookout. See to Cronulla on clear days.

9. Return to Foxground via Hoddle’s Track and Road.

Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand.

Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions.

What to See & Do■ Visit the Village Craft Shop - they have very affordable, handmade gifts.

■ Enjoy a walk along the beach at Werri or Seven Mile Beach, or try surfing at Gerroa.

■ Take a dip in the rockpools at one end of Werri Beach or the natural lagoon at the other, perfect for kids.

■ Grab a coffee, snack or meal at Sea Vista, Scoops or Zoobs in the town centre.

Seven Mile Beach National Park

On a sunny winters day, pack a picnic and head to Seven Mile Beach National park for a family day out.

From the end of Beach Road there is a walkway to a viewing platform and the beach. Access is easy for all ages and for the disabled. Close by there is a large grassy picnic area with barbecues in a pleasant bangalay forest setting. From the picnic area there are walking tracks through the forest.

The long sweep of Seven Mile Beach, backed by sand dunes and forest, has one of the largest remaining areas of natural coastal dune vegetation in the central part of NSW.

The heaths and forests provide a refuge for a diverse range of animals given the park’s relatively small extent. Threatened species in the park include the tiger quoll, regent honeyeater and masked owl.

If you are interested in the historical significance of the beach you can visit the Kingsford-Smith Memorial Lookout. It is perched near the top of Gerroa on Headland Drive.

The memorial commemorates Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith's first flight from Australia to New Zealand in 1933.

The long, broad and flat sands of Seven Mile Beach provided the perfect runway for the Southen Cross's takeooff. Shortly after the trans-Tasman mail service began. Sir Charles was backlater that year providing passenger flights from the beach.Sources: www.environment.nsw.gov.au and Best Bush, Coast & Village Walks of The Illawarra by Gillian and John Souter, Woodslane Press which is available for purchase from www.travelandoutdoorbookcentre.com.au and selected south coast stores.

South Coast Fibre Muster 2012Berry Spinners & Weavers are hosting the fourth South Coast Fibre Muster, at the Berry School of Arts, Alexandra Street, Berry on Friday, 29 and Saturday 30 June, 2012.The event promises to again be two great days of spinning, weaving and related fibre crafts.

Previous musters have been well attended by ‘fibreholics’ from all over NSW and beyond.

If you enjoy spinning, weaving, knitting, felting or the chance to buy high quality, hand-crafted articles, or supplies, then this your ‘must-see’ event!

Doors open at 9am both days, closing at 4pm on Friday and 3pm on Saturday. Entry is $2 for adults and children are admitted free.

The theme for this year’s muster is ‘recycle/rebuild’, with raffle proceeds being donated to the Christchurch Spinners and Weavers to help them rebuild and replace equipment lost in last year’s earthquake.

With a large number of fibre groups attending, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, and

expand your fibre craft knowledge There will be free demonstrations by people willing to teach and explain specific techniques for spinning, weaving, felting, knitting, lace-making and dyeing. Most importantly they will be encouraging people to ‘have a go’.

Traders will also be on hand offering a huge range of supplies.

The program includes two competitions.

The ‘Knit Sprint Showdown’ is an open competition which tests speed knitting skills.

The ‘2 for 1 competition’ requires contestants to make and submit an item that has more than one use prior to the muster. The winner will be announced at the event. Entry forms are available from the event organisers.

With a huge range of garments for sale, made by members of attending groups, this is the perfect opportunity to stock up your ‘gift stash’.

For competition entry forms and more information, contact Judy on 44643081 or noelene on 44643021 or at [email protected]

Kangaroo Valley www.southcoastimag.com.au

The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”.From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills.Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago.Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks criss-cross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

Explore Historic Kangaroo Valley A wander through Kangaroo Valley at the pace of your choosing is an interesting and relaxing winters day outing in the Shoalhaven.

Kangaroo Valley Explorer is a website that has self-guided tours for a range of walks, rides and drives within Kangaroo Valley.

For each tour there is an overview, detailed information, maps and images. Full day excursions through to shorter village based explorations are featured.

Whether you're looking for an easy short walk suitable for kids and older people, a more strenuous all day challenge or something in between, you can be sure to find a good selection of walks in Kangaroo Valley.

Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. Heritage walks and other information can be picked up from the local Visitors Centre.

Relive the ‘days of yore’ at The Everything Store

Whether something quaint or collectable, vintage or valuable, nostalgic, historic or classic – you’re bound to find it at the Everything Store.

Located at 65 Graham Street, Nowra—just down from the council building—the Everything Store is the South Coast’s largest second hand dealer.

With stock changing daily and a range as diverse the store’s name suggests, you’ll be amazed at what you find when you step inside this huge old warehouse full of antiquities.

You can find unique momentos of the past and pieces of memorabilia, old books and records, fine china and genuine antiques along with good quality, affordable used furniture for your home or holiday rental property.

Among the more unusual items currently on sale are an antique pram and a collection of old ship’s lamps.

The stock is constantly changing, with store owners Janet and Craig using their lifetime of experience in the second-hand goods business to seek out quality, quirky and unique items for their customers.

“We choose our stock carefully, and if we don’t have it we can try to source things as far as possible.

“We pride ourselves on our customer service and we do our best, but sometimes it does take time,” Craig said.

The Everything Store is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am-2pm on Saturday, with convenient off-street customer parking at the door.

Wines of the Shoalhaven CoastThe Shoalhaven Coast wine growing region, stretching from Kiama to Durras, has flourished over the past 20 years. The Shoalhaven Coast wine trail meanders through luscious green valleys and overlooks some of the country’s most pristine beaches. It is one of the few regions in Australia where visitors have the unique experience of meeting vignerons and wine makers at cellar doors. The region produces a wide range of varieties including

Chardonnay, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. In recent years new exciting varieties have been planted and are now available for tasting at cellar doors. These new varieties include Arneis, Viognier, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Tannat. The region’s commitment to quality and producing premium wines has been recognised with over 1,000 Australian and International Wine Awards.

This month we caught up with Pamela Zaccagnini, head cook at Zac’s Place Seafood Cafe at Currarong.

Who taught you to cook? My mother and grandmother – it’s a family tradition.

What inspired you to become a head cook and cafe owner? I have a love of food and take pleasure in seeing people enjoying the pleasure of food.

Do you have a philosophy on food?Yes, it’s simple. It’s got to go out looking good, tasting good and not greasy.

What are three things in your kitchen you can’t live without? My staff, my customers, my food.

What was your most memorable meal? It was a meal I had in Darling Harbour once. It was a really good piece of steak, home cut beer battered chips and a homemade gravy that had wine in it and a decent beer to go with it. It was the kind of meal you feel like when you spend all day cooking fish.

What is your typical breaky? English muffins with a thick layer of vegemite and melted cheese and a really good cup of coffee. I can’t start the day without a decent coffee.

What are you most proud of about Zac’s Place? My staff. They’re all good. Nearly all of them are local Currarong kids that have been with me for four to five years. They are very loyal. It’s almost a local tradition for Currarong teenagers to work in the cafe.

What is your favourite dish from your menus? Our battered flathead with chips and a nice salad. It’s got to be battered–with our secret batter recipe.

5MINUTES WITH A FOODIE Pamela Zaccagnini Head cook at Zac's Place, Currarong

Enjoy a scenic rural drive Turn east from the Princes Highway at Nowra and you’ll soon be enjoying a scenic country drive in lush riverside dairy country.Located just a short drive from the main highway beside the Shoalhaven River is the small settlement of Terara with its picturesque weather-board houses and idyllic rural atmosphere.A further 5 km east you’ll reach Numbaa, the site of the Shoalhaven’s first farm which, like most in the area, is now a dairy property.A little further on you will reach the fascinating and historic Comerong Island.History tells that in 1822, Alexander Berry used convict labour to dig a canal 209 yards long in 12 days to allow for arrivals and departures of ships visiting the Shoalhaven.Since then, river floods and dredging widened the canal, allowing steamship passage for trade and passenger travel.Today, Comerong Island is predominantly a nature reserve, with a winding dirt road leading to the southern end of Seven Mile Beach.Access to the island is via car ferry.Source: Shoalhaven Holidays, Shoalhaven City Council

Jervis Bay www.southcoastimag.com.au

Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson,

where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Vincentia and Hyams Beach.

The bay’s beaches are impressive - a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state.

At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a pristine coastal wilderness.

Huskisson is home to the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops.

What to See & Do■ Feel the world’s whitest sand between your toes at Hyams Beach.

■ Take a dive or snorkel with local dive operator Crest Diving.

■ See the restored ‘Lady Denman’ ferry and the world famous heritage maritime museum at the Lady Denman in Huskisson.

■ Go for a walk around Cave, Green, Murrays or Steamers beach in the Booderee National Park. For more info call 4443 0977.

Top 5 Tips for Land Based Whale WatchingJune marks the beginning of whale watching season, as humpback and southern right whales make their annual migration along Australia’s east coast to breeding grounds in warmer Queensland waters.

Their northerly migration continues through to early July, with more than 12000 whales making the journey.

After their breeding season, the whales migrate south to cooler Antarctic waters from September to November.

Jervis Bay, on the NSW South Coast, is fortunately placed to observe both migrations as they pass the entrance and often enter the bay to rest.

If you’re at the right place at the right time, it’s possible to spot many whales in a day. During the southerly migration, you may also be lucky enough to spot young calves making their first trip to the Antarctic.

Here are some tips to help you catch a glimpse of these amazing ocean mammals.

Tip 1: Pick the best spotGive yourself the best chance of spotting a whale by choosing the best possible vantage point. Booderee National Park offers many excellent spots for whale watching. The best is the Cape St George Lighthouse at the end of Stoney Creek Road.

Tip 2: Pick the best timeThe best time to spot migrating whales from shore is in the late morning or early afternoon when the sun’s glare is reduced, allowing you to see more clearly.

Tip 3: Pick the right conditionsLike any outdoor nature observing activity, the weather is a key factor. Your best chances of spotting a whale are on a calm day.

Tip 4: Bring plenty of patienceThere are no two ways about it: whale watching takes patience. But, the thrill of spotting whales is worth the wait. Sometimes, whales come very close to shore and frolic in sheltered bays,

especially when migrating south with newly born calves during Spring.

If they come close, remain quiet and don’t disturb them. Whales are more likely to remain visible if they are not startled or stressed.

Tip 5: Bring the right equipmentWhale watching requires a good set of binoculars. You should also carry your own supply of food, water and sunscreen, and be ready for any likely weather changes. Depending on the vantage point you choose, you may want to take a folding chair with you.

Remember, like any visit to Booderee National Park, the only thing you should leave behind are footprints!

For more information about whale watching vantage points, the various species of whales you’re likely to see and general Booderee National Park visitor information, visit www.booderee.gov.au or call the Visitors Centre on (02) 4443 0977 between 9am and 4pm daily.

Friendship - the recipe for community successWhen it comes to creating a community bond – Stockland Bayswood like to lead the way with their customer initiatives which are all focused around bringing the community of their residents together.

They recognise that when their customers are interacting, sharing information and generally aware and in-touch with their neighbours, that it is a positive thing for all residents as it creates a sense of community and also makes the neighbourhood a safer place.

Implementing initiatives like the Bayswood community website, distributing Welcome Neighbor Cards and also holding regular community events within Bayswood has meant that the growing number of Bayswood residents are forming their own connections.

Local Bayswood resident Lyn Mulligan is an advocate of this approach and said, “Stockland regularly provide entertainment for all residents by way of Christmas Parties, Jazz Concerts, Pizza Parties, Cinemas in the Park, Easter Egg Hunts, etc. These events are a brilliant way in which to have all

the residents befriend one another. It also engenders great enthusiasm and loyalty within the community which, in turn, leads to residents going one step further to embellish the foundation laid by Stockland by way of organising their own activities and forums.”

Lyn said “In fact we have gone one step further in calling residents friends because that’s what Bayswood is all about - community friendship!

Bayswood is a new residential community located in Vincentia, close to local shops, schools and the café restaurant and shopping strip of Huskisson.

Sussex Inlet & WandandianSussex InletSituated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. Grapevine a Buzz with Winter Wine FestivalThe 9th Annual Shoalhaven Coast Winter Wine Festival will take place across the June long weekend, 9-11 June 2012.

A total of 13 vineyards and wineries from Gerringong to Durras will throw open their cellar doors over the three days.

At each venue, visitors will be able to meet the winemakers, sample local cuisine and market stalls plus enjoy live music and entertainment for the whole family. Wine and cheese tastings will be available with the purchase of a festival glass for $8 per person.

Shoalhaven Tourism and Integrity Real Estate are the major sponsors of the 2012 festival, Shoalhaven Coast Wine Industry Association President, Isaac Ellis, believes the annual festival caters to all levels of wine enthusiasts.

“Novices can come out and taste a new vintage and talk with the winemakers to increase their knowledge and confidence,” he says.

“We are looking forward to greeting plenty of repeat and new visitors this June long weekend.”

As in previous years, Stuart’s Coaches will operate a ‘hop on-hop off’ bus to allow visitors to drink responsibly whilst sampling the various wineries against the backdrop of green valleys and South Coast beaches.

Varieties produced in the Shoalhaven region include popular favourites Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with newer varieties like Savagnin, Sangiovese and Tempranillo.

The festival program is out now, outlining participating wineries and activities on the day. For further information, see the event advertisement on page 15 or visit www.shoalhavencoastwine.com.au

Lake Tabourie - CullendullaBawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa

Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men.

Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife.

Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and

picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.

Murramarang National ParkMurramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.

This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.

Cullendulla Creek Nature ReserveThe reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.

BMX track has kids pumped at Lake Tabourie Tourist Park

The recently installed BMX pump track at Lake Tabourie Tourist Park has proved a hit with kids while on holidays.

The term ‘pump track’ describes a track that has been designed to reduce pedalling and instead uses the pumping action of a rider’s body weight and leg compressions to propel them around the track.

A pump track is a continuous, looped dirt mound that is smaller in size than a full-scale BMX bike park, making it accessible to any age or any skill level.

Park Manager Andy Cunningham has been pleased with the initial response from visiting kids.

“It’s not too challenging, so even the little kids can have a go, it was really popular over the busy summer period,”

he says.

“Our small clay track is comprised of banked turns and bowls and a series of rollovers to test varied levels of ability.

“The track is an addition to our current free kids activities available throughout the park. So bring your bikes and helmets and have some fun!”

Whether you or your kids are new to BMX-ing or expert riders, Lake Tabourie Holiday Park’s new BMX Pump Track will be great fun, excellent for fitness and a great way for riders to improve their skills.
