THE body of a 37-year-oldman was found decom-posing next to his bed at

home inRamsgate onThursday.Gregg Paus-

tier, a diver,lived in a farmhouseonFasca-dale Road.

MargateSAPS spokes-person CaptainGerald Mfekaconfirmed theincident andsaid police areinvestigating amurder case asthey suspect hewas stabbed.

Paustier’s friend,KianBurne,who discovered the body, de-scribed him as a fun-loving per-son whom he had known for 10years.

Burne said the last time hesawhis friendalivewasonMon-

day afternoon and everythingseemed normal.

“I tried calling him severaltimes on Tuesday and Wednes-dayand I found it strange thathewas not answering his cell-phone,” said Burne.

He said hesuspectedsomething waswrongwhenhereceived a callfrom Paustier’sgirlfriend, wholives overseas,saying she hadbeen unable toreach him fortwo days.

The policewere called tothe scene and

they also discovered thatPaustier’s car was missing.

The police have received in-formation that the car was spot-ted in Bizana.

Paustier’s friends held amemorialserviceonWednesdayat Glenmore beach for him.

Woman stabbed in Manaba>> They bound her hands and legs, demanding weapons, cash

AWOMAN was stabbed at herhome in Queen Street, Man-aba Beach on Tuesday morn-

ing.According to police spokesper-

son Captain Gerald Mfeka, thewoman was painting her house

when three men entered thedwelling and forced her to theground.

They then bound her hands andlegs.

“They demanded weapons, cashand valuables.

“They then stabbed her on theleg. She was compelled to tell themwhere the items were,” said Mfeka.

The men fled with a firearm,jewellery, a laptop, cellphone andother belongings.

Margate SAPS are investigating

a house robbery.No arrests have been made yet.Netcare 911 paramedics found

that the woman had sustained astab wound to the lower limbs.

Paramedics treated her at thescene however, she did not requiretransportation to hospital.

THE owner of a Port Shep-stonefuneralservicewasrobbedinherstore inEscombeStreetonThursday.

According to Pat Freeman, aman barged into her shop andthrew her to the floor.

He fled with a substantial

amount of cash.“At first I thought he was a

customer. When I asked if heneeded help, he told me to shutup. Then he flung me to theground,” she said.

As he did this, cash fell out ofFreeman’s pocket.

The man grabbed the moneyand fled.

“I ran outside my shop andscreamed for help, but nobodyassisted me,” she said.

Freeman said her business issituated in the area of the taxirank and although it has alwaysbeen a prime spot for crime, re-cently it has worsened.

“Theproblemisthattherearetoomanydrugaddictsintheareawaiting to rob people,” she said.

“I hope the police catch theculprit,” added Freeman.

Two arrestedfor dealing indrugsCONSTABLES Samu ArmstrongNdovela and Bongani ChilizafromPortShepstoneTacticalRe-sponse Team (TRT) recently ar-rested two men in Umzinto fordealing in drugs.

Azaad Sheik (30) and IqbalMohomed Sheik (38) of Gan-dhinagar township in Umzintoappeared in court on Wednes-day, 15 April. The case was re-manded.

Theaccusedwerereleasedonbail of R1 000 each. The drugsare to be forwarded to the foren-sic science laboratory for analy-sis.

While performing detachedduties in the Umzinto area, thepolice officers observed a whiteVW Polo driving towards River-side Park.

“The two occupants behavedsuspiciously so the policemenpulled them over at RiversidePark and searched the vehicle,”said police spokesperson Cap-tain Vincent Pandarum.

Theyfound300mandraxtab-lets in the vehicle and arrestedbothoccupants. The street valueof the drugs is estimated to bearound R21 000.

Lieutenant General Mma-monnye Ngobeni, KZN Provin-cial Commissioner, praised themembers for being alert and ar-resting the accused.

“Thesemembershaveshownthat vigilance pays off. I urgethem to continue with the goodwork and clean up our streetsand rid our communities of drugpeddlers.ThecommunityofUm-zinto canexpectmore combineddrugraidsandcrimepreventionoperations in the area by the lo-cal police and Port ShepstoneTRT,” said Ngobeni.

Stander - taxidriver found guilty>> Sentencing takes place on 27 May

AFTERmore than two years,judgment has finally beenpassed in the trial involving

taxi driver Njabulo Nyawose (24)who collided with Olympic cyclist,Burry Stander, killing him inJanuary 2013.

Nyawosewas, onFriday, foundguilty of culpable homicide andfailure to obey a road sign byMagistrate Charmaine Barnard atPort Shepstone Magistrate'sCourt.

Nyawose was travelling along

MarineDriveinShellyBeachwhenhe unlawfully made a turn over asolid line into Stott Street, knock-ingStanderoffhisbicycle.Standersustained severe injuries, result-ing in his death.

Barnard’sconclusion,basedontheevidencesubmittedbythestateandthedefence,wasthatNyawosecould have avoided the crash.

Stander'smotherMandieweptas judgmentwas passed.Her hus-bandCharlesandfamilymemberswere also in court.

WitnessestestifiedthatNyawo-se overtook several vehicles onhis

way fromPort Shepstone to ShellyBeach prior to the accident.

Barnard said that a reasonableperson would not overtake vehi-cles on the oncoming lane espe-cially when traffic was heavy.

"A reasonable person wouldtakemore care in these conditionsand be more cautious. The courttherefore finds the accused drovenegligently, causing a collision,and that he failed to obey a roadsign and overtook over a solidline," added Barnard.

The deceased was wearing redandwhite andwas in clear viewofthem, she said. Nyawose’s bailwas extended and sentencing willtake place on 27 May.

THEownerofa lodge inRamsgate,Harcourt Street, says she lives infearbecauseofovergrownbushonanemptypropertynextdoor toherlodge.

Verona Baldi of Positano Lodgesays vagrants and criminals havebeen using this bush as a hideout,waiting to pounce on the innocentand rob them.

“I have owned the lodge for 19years. The crime only startedabout 10 years ago when theproperty next door becamevacant,” she said.

Baldi has contacted the Hibis-cus Coast Municipality (HCM) sev-eral times over the years but wasrendered no assistance by them.

“I can’t leave any itemsoutside.Not even a hose pipe. It’s gone be-fore you know it,” she said.

Baldi said her guests have alsobeenrobbedatknifepointover theyears andmany question why she

always keeps her doors locked.“It’s not the norm for a lodge. A

lodgeissupposedtobewelcoming.A few years ago she said, two

studentswererobbedon thestreetand their lodge room key was

taken.Two days later the room was

broken into and their belongingsstolen.

“The key holder had the nameof the lodge and the roomnumber,but I have since changed that sys-tem,” she said.

Baldi asked HCM to contact theowner of the vacant property andget him to clear it or for them toclear it and send him the bill.

“Nothing has been done. It’s al-so an eyesore. There are beautifulhouses on this street.”

HCMwas approached for com-mentbutnonewasmadeavailableto the Fever at the time of going topress.

The Fever made attempts tocontact the owner of the vacantstand telephonically, but in vain.

Siyakudumisasays the launchandthe exhibition is the end product of ayear-long planning process.

"After researching and communi-catingwith local artists we reached aresolution that we should create aplatform for local artists to expressthemselves and reach audiences andmarkets so as to grow the local art in-dustry. It was from these meetingsthat the launchandthe exhibitionen-sued."

He said that the exhibition waspart of the Department of Arts andCulture'sefforttochannellocalartiststocompeteprovinciallyandnational-ly.

ChildrenfromTheChurchofJesusChrist and Latter-day Saints Sundayschool visited the museum on Satur-dayand their sentiment of theexhibi-tion was that it is "amazing".

"It was our first time here actuallyandwe've learnt somuch.People canbe so artistic you know. It's amazinghow one can create something likethis out of sometimes nothing," saidteacher Zeni Ngele.

FORthefirsttimeintheUguDis-trict, the KwaZulu-NatalFashionCouncil (KZNFC)held

a forum to share information withfashion designers at the Port Shep-stone Civic Centre on Monday.

Sincengile Ntshingile, KZNFCmanaging director, sat with 12 as-piringandestablisheddesignersex-plaining what KZNFC is about andwhat it can do for them.

She said they started a drive tovisit designers from rural districtslike Ugu sharing information onhow they can develop careers asfashion designers.

“KZNFC started a drive to informdesigners about programmes thatareavailable to themandtoget feed-backabout the challengesdesignersare faced with,” said Ntshingila.

Ntshingilaexplainedthe fourcat-agories and programmes they caterfor.

“We have four catagories of de-signers -aspiringdesignerswhoarein design school or colleges whomwe provide information with aboutaccredited schools, provide bursa-ries and assist in finding them in-ternships in the industries, juniordesigners with a qualification butwho need practical training andemerging qualified designers, but

who have no business training.She said the council runs a three-

month course where they acquireretail training, pattern drafting,business skills, labour laws andfashion laws.

The last category is for estab-lished designers.

Ntshingila explained the differ-ent platforms the designers can en-gage and participate in with the as-sistance of KZNFC.

Ntshingila said she feels fashionshows have been abused and havebecome entertainment or money-making schemes for event organis-ers.

“Fashion shows should havefashion buyers, an audience, mediaand marketers, not just family andfriends screaming for your line.”

Ntshingila advised the designers

to check the levels of fashion showsthey choose to participate in.

She said the aim is to see fashiondeigners progress to internationallevel.

Fashion designers from the dis-trict raised some of the challengesthey are faced with at district level.

Hope Maxwell said material andbeads are expensive, there are nofacilities or machinery available forthem, theydonothaveastructure torepresentthemandthatonlyTVET’soffer fashion design.

Ntshingila advised the designersto form a “cut, make and trim” hubfor local fashion talents and assisteach other to develop other skills.

“IT takes a lot of hardwork anddedication serving the com-munity for 43 years,” said

Anthor-RajuRajuwhohasworkedforUgu DistrictMunicipality for more than four dec-ades.

Raju started working for the mu-nicipality in 1972.

“Istartedworkingasameterread-er when the organisation was calledWater Co-operation. After some timethe name was changed to the Joint

Services Board before becomingUguDistrict Municipality.”

Raju said he has never had it hardas an employee because he enjoyedhis work.

His secret he said is enjoyingwhatyou do, especially if its serving yourcommunity.

“Therewere challenging times es-pecially when clients fight with youfortheirmeterreadingbeinghigh.Mybiggest weapon was calming the cli-ents down and assisting them withwhattheyneededtobeassistedwith.”

Raju saidhe feels thatGodhasgiv-en him a chance as most of his col-

leagues have since died.Raju is now a retired person.“I retired at the end of March, but

after two weeks the municipalityasked me to return to work on con-tract,” he said.

Raju said he is prepared to workwith the municipality again becausehe loves his job.

SEVERAL people have beenscammed via WhatsApp by anunknown person hacking into

their friend’s or relative’s account.Nombuso Ndzimande from

Mthwalume said she was scammedlastweekafterreceivingaWhatsAppmessage from her friend asking herto lend her money.

Nzimandesaidafterreceivingthemessageshesentherfriendthemon-ey via e-wallet to a number she hasnever seen before.

“I received amessagewhile Iwasatwork frommy friend askingme tosend her R1 300.

“Ireceivedasecondmessagewitha number towhich I should send themoney [via e-wallet] which was dif-ferent to the numbermy friend usesfor WhatsApp.”

Nzimande said she never ques-tionedwhythenumberswerediffer-ent as many people have differentnumbers for their WhatsApp pro-files.

“I called my friend and asked ifshe had received the money andaskedherwhyshewasnotusingherusual number for WhatsApp.

“She then said she doesn’t knowwhat I am talking about, saying shehad been having problems with her

account. That’s when I realised thatI had been scammed.”

Nzimandesaid the friend toldhershe received a code fromWhatsAppandwasasked to send the codebackto thatnumberbecause itwassent toher by mistake.

Nzimande reported this to theHibberdene police andwas told thatthe scam is known and ongoing.

After reporting the incident shewenttothebanktoinvestigatewherethe money was withdrawn.

“When I told the bank I had beenscammed they traced the transac-tion and it showed that thescammers withdrew the money inMpumalanga Province.

“Ifanyonereceivesacodefromanunknown number on WhatsApptheyshoulddelete itandnotrespondbecause that is how scammers hackinto your account,” she said

INFURIATED Merlewood residents, whohave been waiting 21 years for houses allo-catedto them by Hibiscus CoastMunicipal-ity, have set a date for a public demonstra-tion.

Community members were given lotnumbers in 1994, following approval in theMerlewood Mixed Income Housing Project.

Ronel Schalkwyk, who spoke to the Fe-ver on behalf of residents, said a meetingwasheldonSaturdaywherearrangementsfor the march were discussed.

“We haven’t received feedback fromthe mayor. It seems as though nobody isinterested in helping us,” she said.

“We have waited over two decades andcan wait no longer.”

In March residents protested outsidethe incomplete houses with the aim ofmoving into them.

Most community members, who havebeen approved for the houses, live in squal-or, with no basic commodities such as elec-tricity and water.

However, they were stopped whenward councillor Ajith Rajaram, addressedthe angry community

“THE secret to a successfuland happy marriage isloving one another as

though its the first time you laid eyeson each other.”

So say Jerry and Noreen VanNiekerk from Ramsgate whocelebrated their 56th anniversary on18 April.

The couple met in Pietermaritz-burg after being introduced by rugbyfriends.Noreensaidtheywereinare-lationship for a year before they tiedthe knot.

Jerry said he proposed to Noreenon her 21st birthday in January andthey married a few months later.

They said they remember thepro-posal as if it was yesterday.

Other ingredients of a goodmarriagearehaving faith, respectingone another, being friends with eachother,beingabletolaughwithonean-other and most importantly, lovingyour children and each other.

“We admit that its not alwayssmooth. You have your ups anddowns, but the secret is getting overyour challenges together and enjoy-ing the happy moments together,”said Jerry.

“You should find a happymediumbetweenthetwoofyou,giveityourall.

Religious leaders should concentrate on assistingparishioners

Ugu mayor takes 2015/16draft budget to the peopleTHE Ugu District Municipality’s R1 bil-lion-plus draft budget for the2015/2016 financial year that promisesmassive upgrades of the organisation’score functions of water and sanitationservices has been well received by com-munities.

Ugu District Municipality, in part-nership with its family of local munici-palities, is engaged in a series of the In-tegrated Development Plan (IDP) andbudget road shows where the munici-pal leadership is engaging communi-ties to seek their input on the servicedelivery draft budget.

The new financial year’s budgetcaters for the advancement of the dis-trict’s water and sanitations servicesand infrastructure with an increasedcapital budget of R392 473 920 and anoperational budget of R790 658 097for the improvement of water and sani-tation services, tourism, relief for thepoor and special programmes.

An amount of R189 800 000 of thisbudget will address water service back-logs while R53 269 420 of the budgetwill be used for sanitation services. Themunicipality has budgeted R6 246 580for the completion of the installationof Ventilated Pit Latrines (VIP toilets)in the rural communities.

For the urban customers’ the mu-nicipality has proposed a seven percentwater and sanitation services tariff in-crease for the 2015/16 financial year.

In the critical areas of service deliv-ery, a bulk of the budget has been set

aside in a form of a municipal infra-structure grant (MIG) of R249 316 000.

An amount of R303 885 000 fromequitable shares will ensure the contin-uation of free basic water provision viacommunal standpipes and drought re-lief, among other things.

An allocation of R69 438 080 hasbeen made for water tariff subsidisa-tion.

During her presentation of thebudget the district mayor, Cllr Ntombi-fikile Gumede said this public partici-pation process is key towards the en-dorsement of the budget and that it ispivotal that communities are given theopportunity of sharing their perspec-tiveongovernment’spracticestowardsthe improved utilisation of the servicedelivery budget.

We have engaged with numerouscommunities thus far and we havebeen positively advised on the budgetand the communities’ views and sug-gestions will be taken into considera-tion.

Following the conclusion of the IDPand Budget Road Shows 2015/2016,Gumede will present the final budgetwith the communities’ valuable inputsto council for adoption in May for thenew financial year commencing on 1 Ju-ly 2015.

Ugu District Municipality promotesworking together to create an environ-ment that is friendly, responsive, ac-countable, effective and efficient forlocal communities.

Then for decades motor racing inKZN went dead. Now and with fore-sight, our own Desmond Gutziet hasputhishandup(andhisresources)andblessed us with South Africa’s newestracing venue at Oslo Beach.

We understand that this year some25 events are scheduled for this circuitwhichisgoodnewsforourdestination.Race entrants, their teams and familywill join armies of media and specta-torsonracedaysandwith themcomesthespendonhospitality, consumables,accommodation, retail and leisurepreferences.

Ibelieveweshouldsupport thisnewentrant to our tourism and leisure of-fering by encouraging more people tosupport events at the raceway. I havenodoubt that ifwedo, racepromoters,sponsors and the motor industry willrealise that we have a gem of a facilityand assist towards its success.

Old law, new law or no law?IN his letter in last week’s Fever titled

“Setting nudist record straight”, thecommunity could have been fooled by

HCM Speaker Ronnie Nair, except that hisspurious attempts to evade responsibilityand distract public attention did not work.

Notice how he cleverly omits the nameof the third person he spoke to that day.It was the direction of Nair that gave thegreen light to the resumption of public nu-dity on Mpenjati beach on 3 April. This iswhat happens when politics attempts tocook existing law.

Nair would therefore alleviate furtherconfusion by addressing himself to theHCM community at large on the following

thorny facts:• The opposition to a nudist beach by

majority of the local residents of the HCMhave been fundamentally ignored and dis-carded by the municipality. This reveals thesacrifice of individual conscience, publicmorality and democratic principles.

• How a resolution that contravenes ex-isting national laws and municipal by-lawsgets approval at the HCM council with sub-sequent strategy to chisel the law later, tosuit the premature provisional approval.

• Municipal by-laws, violated by nakedbodies in full public view, at a public beachon the Easter weekend.

• Nair cannot specify which faith-based

organisation will have their cordial rela-tionship with the municipality strength-ened or improved by the approval of publicnudity at Mpenjati beach.

• Chief Nzimakwe clearly stated in ourpresence that the site in question is theburial ground of local ancestors and more-over the community envisions a memorialsite there.

• Municipal spokesperson has indicat-ed several times in public, that the by-lawhad been changed when in fact that hadnot yet occurred. This appears to be oneof several motivational strategies for thenudists and has continued uncorrected formonths.

• “Concerned Citizens of HCM” requestthat speaker Nair provide the communitywith the new by-law, Gazetted before 3April, which replaced the Hibiscus CoastMunicipal by-law (Part 2; Section 5.1 and5.2).

• The constant assertion that the con-ditional approval of the nudist applicationwas guided by the Constitution should bediscarded because there is no section orprovision of the constitution of RSA thatapproves public nudity as requested by thenudists.

• The extent of the municipality’s ef-forts to repackage the illegal desires of thenudists is a gloomy attempt to persuade

a resenting public while excluding the Con-cerned Citizens of HCM from several perti-nent meetings by strategically classifyingthose meetings as non-public.

I therefore call on Ronnie Nair, in his ca-pacity as speaker of HCM Council, to applya corrective measure by motivating the en-forcement of all existing laws in our com-munity, or produce copies of any changedlaw(s) in this regard, or declare Mpenjatia “lawless zone”.

Additionally, since public participationis the cornerstone of our democracy, theConcerned Citizens of HCM hereby chal-lenge the municipality to accept an openpublic debate on this matter in order toevaporate the continuous suspicious cloudin the public domain.

Don’t pick uphitch-hikersI AM shocked out of my socks as Iwrite this. Faith in humanity shouldbe a good thing but since my experi-ence one morning recently, mymindset is corrupted in believingthat doing good to others may bringyou bad luck.

On our way to work, my wife andI stopped at the Umtentweni trafficlight and I saw a well-dressed mid-dle- aged lady asking for a lift. Istopped next to her and before wecould ask anything she jumped inpushing money in my hand, de-manding that she had to go to Mur-chison Hospital.

I immediately assumed it was acrisis so in goodwill I drove on. Shekept on talking and talking, nevergiving us a chance to ask anything.She then phoned somebody andtold them she would be there in afew minutes. As we arrived at thehospital she told me to make aU-turn and wait few seconds.

Before I could ask why, a youngman came running up to the car toher side and through the windowtook money from her and droppedsomething on her lap. After this shetold me we can go. I was stunnedspeechless by this and as I drove offI realised I had just helped some-body to buy drugs.

I asked her what had just hap-pened and she said she just boughtcrack. We were so shocked. We tookher back to Umtentweni and thewhole experience made me scarednow to pick up any lift-seeking hu-man. I warn the public to watch outfor this tall blonde well-groomed la-dy asking for a lift at Umtentweni.If I sit and think now about all badstuff that could have gone wrong Ithank Jesus I’m still alive.

Proposaltook off likea ‘leadballoon’

ANattempthasbeenmadeatprovin-cial level to assist municipalities inKZN to improve servicedelivery. In a“back-to-basics” campaign, fivemu-nicipalities, including Ugu District,havebeentargetedbytheMEC.Acir-cular sets out specific activities to beundertaken. A phase appropriatelyaimedatUguwasheaded“Waterlossprogramme”,andthelistedactivitieswere checking meters, clearingstrainers, filters, leaking valves,leaking pipe joint overflows and ille-gal consumption.

There further needed to be func-tional and responsive fault- report-ing centres on a 24-hour basis, goodquality water and clear effluentspumped into the receiving environ-ment from waste water treatmentplants as well as fixing sewer spill-age; and planned routine and pre-ventativemaintenancewasnecessa-

ry.UnderthebanneroftheMunicipal

Systems Act, it was stated that thecode of conduct for officials andcouncillors is tobe enforcedand thattheremust be harmony and a strongworking relationship between lead-ership from different parties in mu-nicipalities between political leader-ship (sic), and that theremustbereg-ular meetings between party whips.

In light of the above the DA pro-posed that the Portfolio Committeeon Sound Governance and HumanResources should recommend to theexecutive committee that the DA bere-admitted to the core Water andSanitation Portfolio Committee fromwhich is has been expelled. Despitethe inept, sorry and calamitous wa-ter and sanitation situation that weare all experiencing on an on-goingbasis, the DA proposal took off like alead balloon. The ANC met the pro-posal with scorn and labelled it “po-litical”.

The DA’s membership of the Wa-terandSanitationPortfolioaswellasthe Finance Portfolio Committeewouldalsostrengthen thepossibilityof meetings being quorate. A fewdaysafter instructions fromtheMECabout how we can improve servicedelivery the Special ProgrammesPortfolio Committee was unable to

meet, as there was no quorum. TheANC has given itself a quorum solarge it can, in fact, be a quorum byitself, thought fit to send only twocouncillors to the meeting, wasting

valuable time, money and petrol aswellashoursofpreparationbyoppo-sition parties.

Water bill selection controversy

I READ the Fever a week or so backandtherewasastoryaboutapension-er who is paying more than R400 ev-erymonth forhismunicipal rates andstill the municipality says he owesthem.

I know of a man from Shaka storewhohasawater bill of R1 893.83andhe has never paid for a single drop ofwater.

How is the municipality doing itscalculations?

It seems as if some people are

chargedmore to cover other people’sbills. This man from Shaka store issupposedtobepayingR37.11month-lyand ifyoucalculateheowes themu-nicipalityfor51months,buthasneverreceivedaletterdemandingpayment.

Pupils and teachers visited RiverbendCrocodile Farm, Beaver Creek Coffee Es-tate, MacBanana, Crags View Wildlife CareCentre and had lunch at Desroches Hotel.

After the tour each school submitted areport, depicting what the pupils learntand the significance of school tours.

The school with the best report will winsoccer jerseys for its entire team. The win-ner will be announced by Friday, 24 April.

Olwandle wins schools debate


PHUMLANI M Foundation hosted a schoolsdebate on Saturday at Esayidi TVET Col-lege, Gamalakhe campus.

The debate had 25 people participatingin five teams made up of Gamalakhe highschools - Olwandle and Gamalakhe Com-mercial High school. The other teams weremade up by Mr and Miss Gamalakhe 2015finalists.

Founder and president of Phumlani MFoundation, Phumlani Mzobe said the de-bate was interesting as it was based on a

sensitive topic - a statement made by theleader of the DA, Mmusi Maimane, at ajoint sitting of Parliament in his reply toSONA.

Maimane alleged that President JacobZuma is not an honourable man, but a bro-ken man presiding over a broken society.During the debate pupils navigated theirpoints around questions based on thisstatement.

“The need for such a debate emanatedfrom an observation of deteriorating levelsof the use of the English languageespecially in schools in rural areas,” saidMzobe.

Cut the calories inrice by using thiscooking method>> Cooking rice with coconut oil can also cut the calories

THEREhavebeenafewarticleslatelyon the Internet about how to makecertain foods less fattening by using

specific cooking methods. One that keepscropping us is the reheating of certainfoods.

According to this article - reheatingpasta makes it healthier - and now wehear that cooking rice with a bit of coco-nut oil (one teaspoon for every half-cupof rice added to boiling water before add-ing the rice), letting it cool down and re-

rice they looked at. And they believe itcould reduce starch by up to 60% in otherkinds of white rice.

Not all starches are the same. Digesti-ble starches take only a little time to di-gest and are quickly turned into glucose,and then later glycogen. Excess glycogenends up adding weight to our bodies if wedon't expend enough energy to burn it off.

Resistant starches take a long time forthe body to process and aren't convertedinto glucose or glycogen because we lackthe ability to digest them, and add up tofewer calories.

A growing body of research, however,has shown that it might be possible tochange the types of starches found infoods by modifying how they are pre-pared.

And rice, depending on the method ofpreparation, undergoes observablechemical changes. Most notably, fried riceand pilaf style rice have a greater propor-tion of resistant starch than the mostcommonly eaten type, steamed rice.

"If you can reduce the digestiblestarch in something like steamed rice, you

can reduce the calories," said Dr. Pushpar-ajah Thavarajva, a professor who is super-vising the research.

"The impact could be huge."There is precedence for this theory,

Thavarajva added. Work done on pota-toes at Harvard University and studies atIndian Universities using legumes and ce-reals noted similar starch-and-calorie re-ductions using similar preparations, hesaid.

Important things to remember whencooking rice:

• Cool the rice as quickly as possible(ideally within one hour). If left to coolslowly to room temperature, bacillus ce-reus bacteria begin growing on the grains,which can lead to a mild case of food poi-soning.

• Keep rice in the fridge for no morethan one day until reheating.

• When you reheat any rice, alwayscheck that the dish is steaming hot all theway through.

• Don't reheat rice more than once.

young woman who is inescapably about tobecome a single mother.

I have reassured her that the supportshe will need in this mammoth undertak-ing will come from the most unlikely ofsources and that her fears are in essencepaper thin. For there will no doubt be amultitude of persons who will love thechild as much as she does, whether theybe friends, family, or work colleagues re-sulting in, with a whole village supportingyou one could really question the single inparent.

I myself did not set out to become a sin-gle parent, rather I was committed to bethe best parent I could be and that mostcertainly has not changed. The journey hasbeen quite daunting with many challengesand struggles, my son however, has been

the one who has really given me every en-couragement.

I am happy to have experienced a rea-sonably irregular and extraordinary life -the passion for all I do is of paramount im-portance to me, which will never change,when parenting what does change howev-er is ones perspective which then changesthe balance of things.

I have been a single parent for a longtime and it reminds me of when I am atwork, the minute I walk into the kitchen,I am badgered from all sides with requestsand operational matters, so in essence do-ing the job of many, meaning you must beorganised.

I am a naturally disorderly somewhatshambolic man, my home is a sanctuary ofrecreation not a showcasing museum, sowhen I became a single parent having tooversee and take care of a little toddler itcertainly caused me to overreact a little bitand become nit-picking in some ways anddictatorial in others

Adding class with glass

GLASS is a versatile material, usefulfor all sorts of jobs around thehouse. Apart from traditional ap-

plications such as glazing in doors, win-dows and mirrors, it has a great decora-tive value when used for shelves, back-splashes, room dividers and ornaments.But to use glass to fill its full potential itis essential to master the techniquesneeded to cut and shape it.

Types of glassOne of the great advantages of using

glass is that there are an infinite varietyof types, patterns and colours to choosefrom, including:

Float glass: Most clear glass used forwindows and doors is float glass. Thishigh quality glass is available in a varietyof thicknesses. It is vitally important tochoose the correct thickness of glass froyour needs – consult a glass supplier tofind out which thickness is most suitableto your needs.

Toughened glass: If, during manufac-ture, glass is heated close to melting pointthen quickly cooled, it is up to five timesstronger than ordinary glass. This type oftoughened glass is widely used for glazingpatio doors, tabletops and any other are-as subject to above-average strain. Avail-able in various thicknesses, depending onthe size of the sheet, it does have the dis-advantage of being almost impossible tocut or drill, so be sure to order the correctsize.

Mirrors: Most modern mirrors aremade from 6mm thick high-quality floatglass and are virtually distortion free. Theglass is then backed with silver, copper orpaints to give a reflective finish.

Wired glass: Wired glass is formed bysandwiching a welded wire mesh withinthe glass during the manufacturing proc-ess. This means that the glass is particu-

larly tough and holds together even whencracked or subjected to high tempera-tures. The principal use of wired glass isin fire-resistant glazing or in roof lights tohelp prevent accidents.

Diffuse reflection glass: Sometimes itis necessary to use glass with a non-re-flective surface, such as when framingpictures, prints or photographs. Diffusereflection glass provides a solution bysubduing reflections while at the sametime providing good transparency.

Patterned glass: This is produced in awide variety of colours and textures andis usually between 3mm and 6mm thick.Though it can be chosen to complementthe décor, the greatest advantage of pat-terned glass is that it offers a degree ofprivacy without shutting the light out en-tirely.

Solar control glass: This kind of glassreduces the transmission of heat, lightand glares from sunlight. It is available ina range of colours in float or patternedtexture finishes.

Cutting and shapingCutting square or regular shapes out

of glass is comparatively easy with a littlecare and patience. However, cutting oddor unusual shapes requires skill and plan-ning if a good result is to be obtained. Itis essential when cutting any glass to restit on a flat working surface such as a kitch-en or dining room table. Place a blanketon the table first to prevent it from beingscratched.

To cut glass, you need a glass cutter,a little paraffin to lubricate the wheel, apair of flat-nosed pliers and a chinagraphpencil or felt-tipped pen to mark cuttinglines on the surface. To cut rounded or un-usual shapes, you need a template tomatch. Make this from brown paper orcardboard so that it lies under the glass

and the shape can be traced with the cut-ter.Makethetemplateabout3mmsmall-er all round than the actual measure-ments of the cut to allow for the distancebetween the edge of the template andthe cutting wheel.

Before scoring the line, first nick theedgeoftheglassateachendwiththecut-ter. When scoring, hold the cutter be-tween the index and middle finger andgrip it underneath with your thumb, mak-ing sure that it is in contact with the sur-face of the glass at all times to ensure aclean cut. Stand still and push the cutteraway from you in one single movement.Try to cut straight through the glass in onego – never attempt to work backwards orthe cut may end up other than where youwant it.

Once you have scored around the out-side of the shape, tap the glass gentlyalongtheundersidewithasmallpinham-merortheendofthecutter,then,grippingthe piece firmly on each side of the line,snap evenly downwards to break theglass. Any remaining slivers of glass canbe “nibbled” away using a pair of broad,flat-nosed pliers, placing the tip of thejaws at right angles to the line you havejust cut in the glass.

Drilling holesIt is quite often necessary to cut a disc

form a piece of glass, or to make a circularhole when fitting an extractor fan. How-ever, drilling holes in glass, to fit a mirrorfor instance, requires a different tech-nique and a more careful choice of cuttingequipment. Glass has a tendency to shat-ter when subjected to vibrations, so it isimportant to use a drill that operates atless than 350 rpm. As very few powerdrills can be made to spin at this speed,it isadvisabletouseahandbrace.Thedrillbits should be tungsten-tipped ad of aspear point or spade point design.

To avoid the glass from cracking be-tween the edge of the glass and thedrilled holes - never drill holes in glass lessthan 13mm from the edge – or less than25mm if a heavy piece of glass is involved.Be sure to always wear safety goggleswhen you are drilling in order to protectyour eyes from small glass splinters.

Lay the glass on a flat surface, markwhere it needs to be drilled with a felt-tipped pen and make a ring of putty orPlasticinearoundtheoutsideofthemark.Pour a quantity of lubricant into the ring,such as turpentine or other white spirit forplain glass, or water for mirrored glass.Start drilling from one side of the glass,and just before you break through to theother side, turn the glass over, repeat theprocess and complete the hole form theopposite side. Easy DIY spoon chandelier

CHANDELIERS are a gorgeous addition toalmost any space, however, they can bequite pricey and heavy.

All you need are some plastic spoons,a large, clear water bottle, a light fixtureand globe, some plastic adhesive glue, aStanley knife and a little patience, and youcould create some lighting magic.

You can make your own simple, cost-ef-fectiveandbeautifulsolutiontothisdilem-ma.

Here’s how:1. Buy a large packet of white plastic, ca-

2. Take your water bottle, and using thesame Stanley knife, carefully and neatly re-move the bottom-end of the bottle.

3. Place a medium-sized drop of clearplastic adhesive glue on the plastic spoon,

Continue this process until the ring islarge enough to comfortably fit over theneck of the water bottle.

Glue the completed ring securely intoplace.

5. To make the light fixture, puncture ahole into the lid of the water bottle. It mustbe big enough to slide some electrical wirethrough it.

Thread the wire through the lid, insertit into the bottle and fasten the lid.

6. From underneath, work out whereyou would like the globe to hang, and thentie a knot in the wire accordingly, to ensureit holds the globe in the correct place.

7. Fit the light fixture to the electric wireinside the water bottle, and lastly, installthe bulb.

Choose a bulb that does not get too hotwhen it is switched on – a CFL or an LEDglobe will work best.

IN a move to curb South Africa’s appall-ing road death toll, Transport MinisterDipuo Peters is proposing restrictionsfor goods vehicles on public roads.

According to the department, therestrictionswillaffectcommercialvehi-cles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM)exceeding 9 000kgs.

The intended regulations will bepublished for public comment and dis-cussion later in 2015.

The new regulations state: “No per-son shall operate on the public road agoods vehicle the gross vehicle mass ofwhich exceeds 9 000kgs from 5pm to8pm, Monday to Friday (except publicholidays) and from 6am to 9am, Mon-day to Friday (except public holidays).”

Essentially vehicles with a GVM ofmore than 9 000kgs can only operateon public roads from 9am to 4pm and8pm to 6am during week days. Thereare, however, provisions for emergencyservice vehicles.

“This provision shall not apply in

case of emergencies, to the driver of afire-fighting vehicle, a fire-fighting re-sponse vehicle, an emergency medicalresponse vehicle, a rescue vehicle or anambulance, who drives such vehicle inthe performance of his or her duties, atraffic officer or a person appointed interms of the South African Police Ser-

vice Act, 1995 (Act No 68 of 1995), whodrives a vehicle in the carrying out of hisor her duties or any person driving a ve-hicle while responding to a disaster ascontemplated in the Disaster Manage-ment Act, 2002 (Act No 57 of 2002).”

Transport department spokesper-son, Ishmael Mnisi, states that the reg-

ulations are in “draft form” and willhave to be presented to his party’s cabi-net, discussed in Parliament and will in-corporate public input. He states thatthe department hopes to implementthe proposed regulations by the end of2015.

FORMER BanyanaBanyana captainAmanda Dlamini was

impressed with the talent ofpupils on the sports field inGcilima on Thursday.

Dlamini visited the area aspart of the Jockey-sponsoredLet’s Play Schools SkillsChallenge which, after aneight-week run, saw 8 000pupils from12schoolspartici-pating.

Gcilima Primary andDelihlazo Primary competedfor top honours in the finalphase of the challenge withGcilima walking away the topprize.

Dlamini said it has alwaysbeen her dream to promotesport among school children,which she is doing throughherAmandaDlaminiFounda-tion.

“I am extremely excited tobe part of this initiative, andam even more excited that it

hasprovedtobesosuccessful.“I lookforwardtointroduc-

ing this programme to manymoreschools in theprovince,”said Dlamini.

She said it pleases her

when she sees children play-ing and having fun.

“By doing this they forgetabout their hardships andbackgrounds and enjoy beingchildren.”

Hibiscus UltraMarathon thisweekend

A NEW race on the South Coastsports calendar takes place on Sun-day, 26 April at 6am.

Not only are the bikers here, buta whole bunch of Comrades hope-fuls will also head to Ramsgate onSunday morning to participate in

the Hibiscus Ultra Marathon, an of-ficial Comrades Marathon qualifier.

The race consists of a 48km,24km and 6,5km fun run. The48km and the 24km start at 6amand the 6,5km fun run starts at7am.

Christian Schools and heads Southtowards Pistols before turning lefton the main road.

It then loosely follows the coastuntil Shelly Beach where it heads

IT is that time of the year again with manyinter-club fishing competitions on the go.

Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club has beenworking on junior development over the pastmonths to encourage young anglers to get in-volved with competitive deep-sea angling. Aspart of thisprogrammetwocompetitionswerechosen for the juniors to attend, one hosted byDurban Ski Boat Club and the other hosted byNatal Rod and Reel Club.

Recently, the Shelly Beach team of CharlesduPlessis (veteranNatalprovincialangler),hisdaughterMeganduPlessis (14)andBevanTal-jaard (15)attended theRodandReel Inter-club

in Durban.The two-day event saw anglers represent-

ingclubs fromallalong thecoastcompeting fortop honours.

The three junior teams (Shelly Beach,PenningtonandWarnerdoone)allplacedinthetop fiveoverall,which isagreat indicatorof theenthusiasm and skill of the upcoming juniors.

Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club is committed tocontinuing with the junior development pro-grammewith the goal of having at least one ofits juniors competing in the junior nationals atShelly Beach in July.

The organisers’ vision is tocreate a mountain biking andtrail running series that putsenthusiastsunderonebannerin order to maintain a qualityof standards.

“The events are also beingheld to showcase the SouthCoast with our beautiful scen-ery, accommodation venuesand sport and adventure ac-tivities for every sportspersonandtourist,”saidMarkThorn-ton-Smith of OneWay Produc-tions.

“Our mission is to providesupportandconsistencytotheevents in theseriesandattractmore sponsors, bigger prizesand more participants,” hesaid.
