Perisher Peak Festival - Australia's only music festival in the snowThe only place to be this June Long Weekend is at Perisher experiencing Australia’s only music festival in the snow – Peak Festival. There’ll be over 130 concerts across 9 on-snow venues at Perisher, Smiggins and Guthega with a feast of flavours from blues to roots, world, soul, funk, folk, traditional, hip-hop and so much more.Peak Festival begins on Friday 6th June on the Long Weekend with the driving rhythm and blues of multi-instrumentalist Richard Perso plus beatboxing vocal adventurer Mal Webb, and the husky soulful simplicity of Brisbane based singer-songwriter Sally Harris with Illawarra duo Little Big Smoke. Saturday at the Festival begins at pace with music running from 10am till midnight at 9 on-snow stages. 70s Folk Icon Glenn Cardier opens the program on the 7th with his trademark dark intensity and punchy delivery, followed by the speakeasy cool of crooner Jordan C Thomas. For some authentic snow sounds there’s Scandi dance band Pining for the Fjords, or at the scenic Guthega Alpine Inn from 12:30pm discover the highly regarded local blues and jazz sounds of Manny Aigner followed by The Hip Replacements who pay homage to the music of Walter Trout and Jimmy Thackery.What’s on for the kids? Festival is proud to be a very family friendly event with a new dedicated youth stage – the ‘South East Arts Youth Stage’ running all day Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June with children under 15 free with a paying adult. There’s plenty to engage from hilarious puppets to enchanting stories, circus, dancing and song in the morning and in the afternoon for those musically inclined, step up and strut your stuff at the Youth Open Mic Stage.Saturday night will be unstoppable from 5pm to midnight with over 20 bands driving a snowstorm across the resort. The divine harmonies and chilled ballads of Little Stevies start off the entertainment at Smigs, followed by Claude Hay and the infectious afro-beats of Melbourne’s acclaimed The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra. On Sunday ski to the beat at Peak. There’s another full day at this unique music festival in the snow with a feast of music from across the Perisher Valley to look forward to. At the Sundeck Hotel don’t miss the arresting Shellie Morris, the 2014 NT Australian of the Year and one of Australia’s finest Indigenous artists, whose latest album is sung entirely in language of the Gulf Country. Sunday Night is going to be huge with a killer concert headlined by hip-hop supergroup The Herd. Over at Smigs the music begins at 7:30pm with the transcendent sounds of The Lachy
Doley Group, get down and boogie with the joyful Ethio-soul of Dereb and the Ambassadors, and finally the must-see act of the Festival - legendary award-winning hip-hop headliners The Herd. Welcome to June and welcome to winter on the Far South Coast.
The Queens Birthday weekend is a great opportunity to visit the region, and you'll be spoilt for choice with a heap of events on over the long weekend.
Kicking things off is the inaugural Festival of the Face in Bega, a celebration of portraiture in all its forms. With Australia's third richest portraiture award, the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award, at its core, the Festival of the Face promises to be an intriguing series of events. The Perisher Peak Festival is the highlight of the opening weekend on the NSW snowfields, featuring 130 performances at 9 on-snow venues at Perisher, Smiggins and Guthega. From Friday to Sunday you can enjoy live performances from Shellie Morris,

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.
You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.
The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

J R Logan: Community & Nation exhibition at Killer Whale MuseumWhen you turn on a light switch in Eden, think of John Ronaldson Logan, the local entrepreneur who established the town’s first public electricity plant a century ago. By some he is also considered the father of the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme, so passionate was he about the scheme and its potential for Eden and the district, he expended a great deal of personal time and finances planning and campaigning the merits of the project. Eden Killer Whale Museum also stands as testimony to Logan’s contribution to Eden. He showed great foresight in having the skeleton of the killer
whale known as Old Tom preserved, and in securing a permanent home for it, allowing visitors from around the world to continue to experience the retelling of Eden’s killer whales and whaling stories. When John Ronaldson Logan passed away in his family home at East Boyd in 1937, an Australian newspaper article described his death as the loss of a ‘true patriot’. J R Logan: Community and Nation commemorates the contribution of this visionary man who served his country both formally during the First World War, and voluntarily upon his return. The exhibition also reflects

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.
Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.
Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden, turn left off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s several oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping, attractions and plenty of accommodation choices.
Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.
There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to
Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

One of the Merimbula's most popular places to walk is the Boardwalk around the Top Lake. The walk offers a fine example of mangrove habitat in a temperate setting. The shoreline of the estuarine lake is sandy with occasional rocky outcrops, and mangroves and salt marsh plants are found scattered along the edge, and occasionally in stands to 10m wide.It has the distinction of being the most southerly situated of any mangrove boardwalk in Australia, and the highest latitude mangrove boardwalk in the world.You can start your walk either from

Merimbula comes alive to the sound of JazzThis June long weekend Merimbula comes alive with the sound of jazz as the 2014 Merimbula Jazz Festival takes over this beautiful coastal town.The Merimbula Jazz Festival is one of Australia’s longest-running festivals and this year celebrates its 34th year. Jazz musicians and fans from all around Australia make this event a permanent fixture on their calendars.Eight official Jazz Festival venues, buskers and in-house live music at many cafes and restaurants around Merimbula, showcase the many moods of jazz music. Quiet jazz, mellow jazz, bluesy jazz, rocking jazz, funky jazz, latin jazz, swinging jazz, solos, small bands, big bands. There is music to suit all tastes.The Street Parade starts at 10.30am this year, allowing more musicians to play in the Parade’s massed marching band.Club Sapphire is again hosting the Jazz Art competition, with the RSL featuring a display from the Down South Jazz Club. There's even a jazz tea cosy knitting competition, with entries displayed at
Booktique and Pins’n’Needles.On Monday the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club hosts the Jazz Hatters Party with non-stop music and prizes for the best jazz hat. Six New Furry Punks At Potoroo PalaceLast week six small precious bundles arrived in pastel pillowcases travelling by the fastest transport possible (drivers feeding each other so as not to have to pause on the journey) from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Canberra: three male and three female Long-nosed Potoroos. After one month's quarantine, they will join the eleven residents, who all have biblical names: Esther, Magdalen, Bathsheba, Ruth, Rachel, Jezebel, Eve, Ezekiel, Daniel, Noah and Solomon.Staff at Potoroo Palace have been able to gather a huge variety of mushrooms recently because the weather has been perfect for all kinds of fungi, the potoroos favourite food. The potoroos themselves are excellent truffle finders, truffles being the fruiting bodies of underground fungi.Australia has a huge variety of truffles,of all shapes, sizes and colours. The truffles rely on small fungus eating native animals (especially potoroos because most of their preferred diet is fungus) and insects to distribute their

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars
worth of product every year.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.
The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre,
which provides information about attractions throughout the region.
Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.
The Festival of the Face throughout Bega in June is a festival of exhibitions with pop up galleries, exhibitions and special events. The core of the Festival is the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award, the third richest portraiture award in Australia on exhibition at the at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery..

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as the famous Bates General Store and ABC Cheese Factory, located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.
Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday.
The town manages to retain a 1950s fishing village vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.
With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean.
Narooma has some easy cycling tracks, as well as being a great base for serious riders who are happy tackling rides 50km or longer.
Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages.
The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea.
There are several charter boats to take you out to Montague Island, as well as fishing charter operators if you're into game fishing.
If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

Head south and visit Bodalla's historic All Saints Church
Hyde Park.
The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876, although frequent flooding meant new bridges had to be erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966.
World War 11 must have seemed a long way from Moruya to begin with, but as the war progressed, it had a direct impact on the town. The Moruya aerodrome became an advanced operational base, and in 1942 a trawler was attacked by the Japanese offshore between Moruya and Batemans Bay. On 25 December 1944 the US liberty ship SS Robert J. Walker was torpedoed off Moruya by the German submarine U-862. It sank the next day between Moruya and Bega, with 2 people dying and 67 survivors.
These days, Moruya is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes, as well as the large, intricately carved wooden
poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.
Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
Traditionally home to two indigenous tribes, the Walbanga and the Brinja-Yuin, the name Moruya is derived from the word, mherroyah, meaning "home of the black swan". Black swans still feature in Moruya, frequently seen in the lakes and rivers around town.
European settlement began in the 1820s, with the township gazetted in 1851.
Moruya's granite quarries were famous for supplying the rock used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1925 to 1932, the Harbour Bridge works saw 250 stonemasons employed and relocated to Moruya by the contractor to produce 18,000 cubic metres of dimension stone for the bridge pylons, 173,000 blocks, and 200,000 yards of crushed stone that was used as aggregate for concrete.
Moruya granite was also used for Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the base of the Captain Cook statue in

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards.
