George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

century.

You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay - the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

A new photographic display at the Eden Killer Whale Museum will show how pets have been cherished on board ships as loyal travelling companions on many sea voyages.Little Shipmates: seafaring pets, an Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition, features 22 photographs from the museum’s Sam Hood Collection. The images capture how much pets meant to many seafarers in a life where they were often far from their families for long periods of time.Photographs of cats, dogs, monkeys and birds on board ships clearly show their owners attachment.Sydney photographer Sam Hood took hundreds of photographs of crew members between 1900 and the 1950s as souvenirs for their visit or to send home to families. One photograph on display shows an English ship’s officer with his pet monkey, evidence of the many exotic ports seafarers visited during their voyages. Others show how cats and dogs became treasured members of the crew as in the Scottish steamer Strathgarry’s photo showing the ship’s company including the captain’s terrier and two cats.Sam Hood created an unparalleled record of Sydney’s maritime life from the 1890s to the 1950s, capturing

images of ships, crews, cargo handling, shipbuilding and launching, wartime scenes, pleasure boating and sailing through his lens. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century.However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount

Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Two of Pambula's famous houses still standing include Covington's, formerly owned by Syms Covington who travelled to Australia with Charles Darwin on the Beagle, and McKell's Cottage, where former NSW Governor William McKell was born. The building formerly known as 'Toad Hall' and the Pambula Courthouse are other examples of heritage buildings still very much in use today.The village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course.Just 5 minutes east of the village is

Pambula Beach with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth.There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.Pambula Lake is just south where there’s a boat ramp and oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of

human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Kimberley Dodd Tony Sweeting Tricia Thompson For the first time, three local artists are bringing together a diverse range of works where each, in their own way, explore what it means to live in our region.Three Kinds of Country features the work of painter and graphic designer Kimberley Dodd of Towamba, painter, sculptor and printmaker Tony Sweeting of Rocky Hall and drawer, painter and printmaker Tricia Thompson of Myrtle Mountain.For Kimberley, this is a chance to showcase a new artistic direction. She is exhibiting brilliantly coloured still lifes which feature personal and treasured objects. From silk saris to sparkly old jewelry, a Chinese doll sprawled against a gramophone, the paintings give viewers a chance to look back through time. This is about the hidden story.Tony lives on a farm at Rocky Hall where the amazing views and forests provide inspiration for his work. “I have always been interested in nature, its form, symmetry and intricacies. It is these forms, represented in nature through caves, holes, slime, cobwebs and other wet, velvety surfaces that triggers the primal instinct in humans.”In 2000 Tricia moved to a forested property, which had no electricity but teemed with wildlife. It was situated within a sparsely inhabited, very supportive community. “Almost subconsciously I make connections between my intellectual and physical realities. These include my immediate and broader environment, reading, music and mythology, within the hurly-burly of a delightful life.”Three Kinds of Country runs from 27 November to 1 December from 9am - 5pm at Twyford Hall, Merimbula. The exhibition is being opened by local artist/writer/curator, Megan Bottari from 5pm on Sat 27th November.

Merimbula brings in NYE with a bang!Ford Park will again be the centre of Merimbula's NYE celebrations in 2010.The day’s events kick off with markets in the morning featuring the best in local food, crafts and interesting stalls. From around midday, live music takes centre stage with entertainment provided by local up-and-coming bands, school bands and various musical acts. There will also be rides and amusements for all the family, providing a great opportunity to bring the kids and a picnic blanket and enjoy some free entertainment. As the day turns to dusk the entertainment will be turned up a

notch when a great line up of talented professional musicians hits the stage. The headline act on the night is country music sensation “The Pigs". Not your typical country music band, The Pigs combine their onstage personas and witty antics with a unique blend of country, rockabilly and pop. The family fireworks will grace the sky around 9.30pm, followed by a local DJ to get the young ones in the mood. The grand finale with more fireworks at midnight will bring in the New Year. A full schedule of events will be available in the Merimbula News Weekly in the weeks prior to the event.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 5 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery, which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has information on Tathra and surrounding areas.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

In 2010 Bodalla celebrated the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mort's purchase of 13,000 acres of land at Bodalla and the beginning of the Bodalla Estate. Mort became a pioneer of the Australian dairying industry, and many of the dairy farms he established still operate today.

The magnificent All Saints Church, constructed from granite quarried on Bodalla Estate, was dedicated by the Mort family to Thomas Mort’s memory, with the foundation stone laid two years after he died in 1880. All Saints is open each day for visitors, and it's worth a stop just to see the stained glass windows.

Bodalla today is a bustling village with its historical roots still present; make sure you visit the businesses mentioned below as you explore this picturesque village.

The township of Moruya has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.

It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney

Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the statue of Captain James Cook in Sydney's Botanic Gardens.

These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Moruya has a great array of specialty shops for those looking for something a little bit different. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and hotels with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town.

Moruya has a thriving arts community, with exhibitions frequently held at the Mechanics Institute.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

With summer with us you've probably thought how nice it would be to have some lovely shade trees to cool the garden from the hot summer sun.

As trees mature they create another growing area where many shade-loving plants will survive, thus creating another special part of your garden.

The use of deciduous shade trees in a garden is not only beneficial in decreasing our demand for electricity for cooling but also allows the sun to

warm the building in winter, therefore decreasing the need to have heaters running continually.

In selecting the tree for your particular need, several considerations should be made.

The most important consideration undoubtedly is the eventual size of the tree. The tree should be planted at least one and a half times the mature radius of the tree from buildings, thus decreasing the risk of damage

Evergreen varieties should be used further from the home to provide all-around wind protection for the garden.
