Example - The Cure for “Stockpiler Syndrome”: Methodist Healthcare Transitions to Just-in-Time Printing

It may seem counterintuitive that establishing a Company Acme-managed on-site print center can actually reduce the amount of paper floating around an organization, but that’s exactly what’s happening at Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio.

Since Methodist partnered with Company Acme to launch its on-site print center in its headquarters last year (?), the healthcare organization’s attitudes and printing practices have evolved. These days, stockpiling of forms that quickly become outdated is out. A just-in-time delivery model is in.

This on-demand printing model is not only efficient, but also a key to helping the healthcare system meet constantly changing legal and regulatory requirements. When Medicare recently mandated that all physician signatures also include a date and time, it was simple to modify existing forms through the print center using online tools.

Methodist executives say the Company Acme employees who work at the print center are knowledgeable about the challenges and pressures of the healthcare industry. They are also innovative in helping Methodist find digital alternatives to printed pieces, when appropriate.

Everyone’s on the same page: Methodist’s just-in-time, on-demand printing is a model of efficiency that’s transforming the organization. Copy that!

Example - Quality Care/Affordable Care Act/patient ed materials:

At Methodist Hospital, excellent patient care does not end when a patient is walking out the hospital doors. Patients need to be sent home with clear, compelling patient education materials that arm them with the information they need to keep from coming back.

The growing demand for “after care” manuals, brochures, and fact sheets is one of the reasons that Methodist established an on-site Company Acme-managed printing center. The center’s staff work quickly, and create materials that consistently exceed Methodist’s expectations in terms of quality.

Methodist takes care of the patients. Company Acme takes care of the printing.

Just What the Doctor Ordered: Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio Teams With Company Acme to Cure High Costs of Printing, Boost Productivity, and Sharpen Focus on Patient Care

An innovative partnership between Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio and Company Acme is benefiting patients and providers while reducing waste and cutting costs at the nation’s fifth largest healthcare system.

The establishment of a Company Acme-managed on-site print center at Methodist’s corporate headquarters in San Antonio generated $262K in net benefits in the first half of 2014. The new print center also streamlined the organization’s processes so that Methodist’s professionals have more time and resources to dedicate to their first priority: their patients.

“We’re in the healthcare business, not the printing business,” said Geoffrey Crabtree, senior vice president at Methodist. “Partnering with Company Acme has allowed us to sharpen our focus on high quality patient care while delegating the responsibilities for printing and related services to a company we know and trust.”

Establishing the print center in Methodist’s headquarters was a timely move, as healthcare reform—specifically the Affordable Care Act—is increasing the demand for high-quality patient education materials. With the Affordable Care Act, Methodist’s reimbursements from Medicare and other government programs are tied to performance metrics like patient readmission rates. As a result, Methodist has had to spend more time educating patients after they leave the hospital to ensure they don’t return. “That means developing and printing of more manuals, brochures, and fact sheets, which arm our patients with the information they need to keep them out of the hospital,” said Palmira Arellano, vice president of marketing and public relations at Methodist. “When Company Acme produces these materials at our on-site print center, the end products are always fabulous and better than we expected.”

The new print center is located in the corporate office next door to the organization’s marketing department. This proximity has maximized productivity and minimized waste, which translates into cost savings. Company Acme and Methodist have together created a lean, just-in-time printing model to better manage inventory and speed turnaround. An online workflow portal has also enhanced efficiency; Methodist employees now submit print jobs in about 30 seconds on average, compared to one to two minutes before, giving them extra time to devote to other tasks. “When we think about patients, we think about how we can save money so we can take those dollars and put them into clinical care. Company Acme has helped us achieve savings and efficiencies that ultimately allow us to better serve patients,” said Crabtree.

A strong emphasis on teamwork is one of the reasons Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio is the most respected and preferred provider in the community, and adding Company Acme to the Methodist team was a good decision, Crabtree said. “We’ve created strong partnerships over the last 50 years, and we are continuing that tradition with our partnership with Company Acme. Company Acme understands healthcare and shares our passion for excellence,” Crabtree said. “It’s two organizations that think alike.” ####
