Group outings, trips, events, holidays and travel

SLU3A members should be aware that every effort is made to draw attention to possible

difficulties which may be encountered during group activities, trips, excursions or holidays

organised on their behalf by SLU3A members, Group Leaders and/or Officers. If a member

requires any help or assistance to enable them to enjoy the experience, it is the member’s

own responsibility to ensure such help and assistance is engaged, which should be arranged

before firm bookings are made with the Organiser. Help or assistance may be provided by a

non-member. With regards to the events and activities organised and promoted by the SLU3A,

members are advised that every possible effort and endeavour is made to fill vacancies arising

from a member’s cancellations. However, there is no guarantee of a refund - full or in part - in

From the Chair We have a busy, and I hope exciting, year ahead for SLU3A. We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary at the May monthly meeting and details of how to buy your ticket (to include refreshments) will be available next month. On Saturday evening 16th May we hope you will join us at the Celidh (again, tickets available shortly) and our October monthly meeting will celebrate the Sixties. On Wednesday 3rd June we will be working with Market Harborough U3A on a joint, daytime activity to celebrate and publicise all

that U3As achieve. It is also pertinent to mention here that there will not be a monthly meeting in April as the second Monday falls on Easter Monday. On the Committee side, we will continue to hone our systems for collecting and paying rents. We are all volunteers and having spent much time last month working with several Committee members to reconcile group payments against invoices, we have to work towards implementing less time consuming and accurate ways of doing this on a monthly basis. Ongoing help from members paying group subs regularly, to group leaders paying them in and Committee member role holders checking them against invoices before payment, your ongoing cooperation will be invaluable. On a final note, do join the 15,000 U3A members nationally who have signed up for the national, monthly, electronic newsletter: it looks forward to what is being planned and offers signposts to sources of help for group activities. Membership Secretary Happy New Year to all our Members. I hope that you had a Wonderful Christmas. We still have few of The U3A Diary for 2020 available and if you still need a diary, please see me at the January meeting. Many thanks to all the Members and the Group Leaders who have forwarded completed Gift Aid declarations. We are still continuing this campaign and if you are a UK Taxpayer and have not completed a Gift Aid Form, please see me at the meeting, speak to your

Group Leader who all have the forms or contact me via email or telephone, and I will forward a form to you Gift Aid can provide an important contribution to our funds, enabling us to provide more support for both our Groups and Members and possibly in the future, help towards reducing the Membership subscriptions. If you are a UK Tax payer, all you have to do is to write your name on and then sign and date a declaration form (available to download and print out from the Membership section of our website). There is no other action required from you and it does not cost you any money or affect your tax position. It is with great sadness that I must advise about Gordon Cole who has had to resign due to illness having been a Member for over 15 years and Keith Gilbert, a Founder Member, who died on the 14 December. A separate article about Keith can be found in the Newsletter. Ian Webb, [email protected]

Coffee, tea and biscuits at the Monthly Meeting Thank you Jenny and ladies of the table tennis group for manning the kitchen at our December (concert and mincepie) meeting. Also thanks to an unnamed person. Pleased to report £47.00 was passed to a charity earlier in the month from the donations for tea and coffee. After the hall had been cleared a pink pen was found with the name Dorothy

on it, I will bring it to further monthly meetings in the hope that Dorothy will claim it. Colin Ford, Coffee Coordinator

YOUR COMMITTEE

Group Enabler

A very happy New Year to all our members! After the festive break I hope

everyone is rested and ready for all that 2020 brings. New SLU3A groups are

planned to broaden the choice on offer and to eliminate waiting lists. Every

month 4 new group ideas will be promoted for a period of up to 3 months,

depending on interest. I will let all members know about them by email and

they will also be listed in my Newsletter report and on the website. In addition, I

will have a list at each monthly meeting where members can sign up for them

as well as a 'Suggestions for New Groups' sheet.

January New Groups are: Chess, Ukuleles 2, Cycling 2 and Walking Cricket.

By now, all Group Leaders will have been contacted about producing a short video for our 20th

Anniversary Celebrations on 11th May. I hope as many groups as possible will participate to to

showcase all the varied activities our U3A takes part in.

Finally, I would like to extend my thanks and best wishes to Peter Ellement and Chris Graves, both of

whom are standing down as Group Leaders of the Architecture and Monday Bridge groups

respectively. Both have carried out their roles for 15 years - a wonderful achievement which is much

appreciated by everyone in SLU3A!

Keith Gilbert Keith Gilbert, who passed away on 14th December 2019, was one of the founder members of SLU3A. His membership number - 53 - tells its own story: he and Jennifer signed up with SLU3A in early May 2000. Keith made a significant contribution to setting up our main infrastructure and the early groups of our fledgling organisation. His presence at meetings and groups continued for the next 17 or 18 years. Until fairly recently he was a regular attender at the Langton lunch clubs and I enjoyed supernumerary lunchtime chats with Keith which I now sadly miss. In the 1980s we were next door neighbours (we had a long standing joke the he and Jennifer only moved house because they could not deal with the folk next door). Keith and Jennifer have been our friends for almost 40 years. Keith will be missed by the several groups he was associated with. He always had kind and encouraging words for those running the groups and trying to keep order and maintain an interesting programme. “Well done Keith!!!” Your presence amongst us will unquestionably be missed. We send Jennifer and sons Andrew and Ian and their families our kindest regards

Architecture We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2.00pm in the Lounge at the Congregational Church. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 28 January 2020, when Geoff will give a talk entitled ‘Some Recently Deceased Architects and their Contribution to Modern Architecture.’ Please note this is a change to the talk advertised in December 2019 Newsletter. Some time will be given to finalising the programme for 2020. Subscription to the group for the year is £10 towards the annual cost of the rent for the Lounge. New members are always very welcome. Please contact one of the joint group leaders if you are interested in joining the Group. Colin Cohen tel. 01858 682005, Geoff. Woods tel. 01858 468989

Art History At our next meeting, on Monday 3rd February, we will watch a DVD about German Expressionism which features the artists Marc, Kirchner, Nolde, Beckmann and Munter. German Expressionism was an early twentieth century art movement that emphasized the artist's inner feelings or ideas rather than physical reality, and was

characterised by simplified shapes and bright colours. Did you know that the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery in Leicester holds the largest collection of German Expressionist Art in the UK? The initial collection which began in 1944, with paintings saved from destruction in Nazi Germany, now numbers over 350 artworks. There is plenty of information about the artworks and the history of the collection on the museum website and of course the museum is only a short trip from Market Harborough.

Birdwatching Fortunately for us our visit last month to Pitsford Water coincided with a window of fine, mild weather in between all the December rain! A stroll across the dam to Moulton Grange Bay and back produced a good variety of land and water birds but nothing particularly out of the ordinary. A couple of male Goldeneye (pictured) were the pick of the wildfowl. All three of our most common herons were eventually spotted dotted around the lagoon and on the way back over the dam a large flock of Meadow Pipits were busy feeding on the grass bank. Where had they suddenly appeared from? Bruce White

Book Club 1 Olive Kitteridge - Elisabeth Strout Olive Kitteridge lives in Crosby, a coastal town in Maine, America. The novel takes the form of a series of short stories that are interrelated containing a number of recurring characters. Olive's character is both complex and difficult and is revealed through her relationships with those around her. The book is well written but reaction was mixed and, as with 'marmite', some of us loved it while others did not. I did. Cherry Taylor

Book Club 2 We discussed two months' books at our December meeting. The first was "Bees" by Lalline Paull a book on which our opinions were very divided in that some loved it and some really disliked it. However that's what a book club is all about. However the second choice was "Entry Island" by Peter May. This is a detective story set in Canada and we all found it interesting because of the historic issues that the story evolved around. We all learned a lot about the Highland clearances in the 19th century and a little about settlements in Canada by the forced emigrants from Scotland. We liked it well enough that we said we would read more works by this author. Ronnie Leech

German Conversation German analysts writing in the journal Social Indicators Research report that 21,000 Britons were regularly

asked how happy they were with their lives. They found that satisfaction starts to dip in late teens, levels out

then takes an upturn at 46. It rises to a peak at 74 when we are most content due to the combination of fewer

responsibilities and financial woes plus more time for ourselves. We also become better at keeping negative

Ladies Choir A Happy New Year to everyone. It is time to consider what 2020 holds for us, hopefully some wonderful

singing and new members to swell our ranks. As we shall not be singing for the Kibworth Wednesday Fellowship

this year and therefore not working to a particular future date, we need to replace this performance with a new

venue and audience. We all need to give this some thought and ask around to see if there are any groups in the

area who would welcome us.

Langton Lunch Clubs The Langton Lunch Clubs gather together again on Thursday 16th and/or Wednesday 29th January 2020. We shall

be more than delighted to see old faces and new or re-joining members on either or both of the occasions. Our

numbers are not always robust so if you have been giving us the slip of late do please come and have bite to eat

and a chat. We meet at 11-45am for 12 noon at the Langton Inn which is just off the McDonalds roundabout on

the A6 bypass north of Harborough. Order as much or as little you like on the day. There is ample car parking.

Local History We wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.

Our first meeting of 2020 will be on Tuesday 21 January at 2.00 pm. Colin Cohen, one of our members, will

speak to us on Lost London. Not so local you might say, but our capital city is only just under an hour away by

train and it will be good to learn some new facts.

We look forward to welcoming you all and complimentary coffee/tea and cakes will be available after the

meeting.

Music Appreciation 1 We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5 Holdenby Close at 10am. Each meeting lasts for two hours.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21 January 2020 when the programme of music will be chosen by Roger.

At our last meeting in December, the music was chosen by members of the group. We began with the finale of

the ‘Piano Concerto in A minor’ by Clara Schumann(1819-1896). This was followed by ‘Get your Kicks on Route

66’ sung by Nat King Cole and the ‘Slavonic Dance No 8’ by Dvorak (1841-1904). We then heard three pieces of

Christmas music – ‘The Shepherds’ Farewell’ from the L’Enfance du Christ by Hector Berlioz (1803-1869); ‘Ave

Rex’ by William Mathias (1934-1992) and ‘The Shepherd’s Pipe Carol’ by John Rutter (b1945). The first part of

the morning ended with a fling (or should it be a can-can?) as we listened to the overture from ‘Orpheus in the

Underworld’ by Offenbach (1819-1880). After a break for coffee and mince-pies – thank you Amanda – we

heard ‘The Kyrie’ from Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini (1792-1868). This was followed by ‘The Orangery’ by

Carolina Shaw (b1982); the Irish singer, song writer Brian Kennedy singing ‘Danny Boy’ and Louis Armstrong

performing ‘Cool Yule’. We finished the morning with ‘Havanaise in E major for violin and orchestra’ by Camille

Saint-Saens (1835-1921) with Nicola Benedetti on violin. Peter Ellement 01858 432966 [email protected]

Music Appreciation (2) Having had no meeting in December we are looking forward to our next on January 31st. It is my intention that

we will devote the whole programme to Tchaikovsky. The principal item will be the composer's 4th Symphony,

and this will be supported by a selection of his lesser known works. We will meet as usual at 19 Westfield Close.

We now have a vacancy for a new Member. If you are interested please contact the undersigned.

New Experiences It was great to finish the year with a lovely Mexican lunch at Rio Bravo and we are looking forward to an exciting

programme in 2020 starting with a visit to Jungle Park indoor crazy golf on Tue 14th Jan. Then on Wed Feb 5th

we are trying our hand at New Age Kurling (on wheels). If you would like to join us for these activities, or to be

added to the group mailing list to keep posted on future events, please contact Kevin.

In August last year we had an interesting talk about hearing loss from Halima Ali. She has sent some follow-up information from which this is an extract: Not dealing with early hearing loss can lead to permanent hearing loss and even early onset dementia. Offering FREE hearing tests, Harley St Audiology an independent hearing aid provider deliver comprehensive hearing assessments and evaluate your hearing needs, all focused around customer satisfaction and quick turnaround. Did you know 1 in 6 people across the UK have a hearing loss? Neither did we! Visit harleystaudiology.com or call 0800 689 5463 for bookings and more information at MARKET HARBOROUGH DENTAL PRACTICE. Hearing tests are also available from other local places. Just put ‘hearing tests Market Harborough’ into your internet browser.

Railway Exploration An essential constituent of the steam locomotive diet is water. We’ll start

the year by looking at how the railways coped with this requirement which

sometimes necessitated expensive engineering and always careful

management by drivers and firemen. Should you be intrigued by the

Wednesday 15th January, Kettering Road Bowls club) and all will be

revealed!

no relationship to anything written by Charles Dickens.

New members are always welcome.

Singing for Fun If you enjoy singing then why not come along to one of our meetings? We sing all kinds of songs just because

it's fun to be with like-minded folk doing the same in a friendly convivial atmosphere. We meet monthly on the

are always very welcome and our first meeting of 2020 will be on Friday 10 January.

The first meeting of 2020 will take place on Wednesday February 5th, when Colin Ford will be presenting a talk

the Victorian era.

Ukulele Group / Strictly Ukuleles Looking back over the year, in 2019 we held about 24 sessions, sang and played about 250 songs, performed in

over 20 concerts, and raised over £1200 for charity. We’re on a seasonal break now until January, when it’ll all

kick off again ! Happy New Year.

David Evans 01858 463045

Wine Explorers At our December meeting we had a Christmas party and all brought along snacks to share. We blind tasted four

types of bubbly: champagne, Crémant de Bourgogne, Prosecco and Cava. We then had a quiz to identify which

was which and how much it cost. One member scored 100% but the rest of us were foxed. However we did

score the champagne highest followed by the Crémant, Prosecco and Cava. We did agree that we would be

happy to toast the festivities with any of them! Happy New Year.

Cycling Despite a poor weather forecast thirteen members took part in our December ride. Our coffee stop at

Bringhurst offered amazing views over the Welland valley. Our thanks to Kevin for arranging this and the

Christmas lunch which was also attended by partners. We all thoroughly enjoyed this at The Red Lion at

Welham. We had an unfortunate incident on this ride inasmuch as Peter Devine fell onto the road in an effort

to give an oncoming vehicle more room to pass on a very narrow road less than a mile from our destination. As

he says it was rather an extreme way of getting out of offering TLC to his wife following her recent hip

operation! We meet again in March.

Strollers Twenty-two of us enjoyed our Xmas meal, sorry you were unable to join us Mary. The same venue is booked

for next year on December 11th. We have stroll leaders through to Dec 2020. Thank you for our card and

chocolates; the gesture is much appreciated .

On Friday 14th February 2020 we meet at Foxton Locks Inn, Bottom Lock, Gumley Rd, Foxton, tel 0116 2791515,

LE16 7RA at 10.15 to order a meal and for a 10.30 start. It will be a gentle stroll along towpaths, following lanes

through Foxton and footpaths across fields, with a very short road section before ending back at the locks for

lunch. It is a stroll which can be altered depending on weather conditions on soft and hard surfaces (with 1 stile

- sorry ! ). it is a little less than 2 miles taking about 1 hour 40 mins.

Please contact Toni and Mike Parsons by midday on Tuesday 11th to let them know if you are coming and if you

are staying for lunch, tel 01858 431944. Unfortunately the car park at Foxton Locks is £2 for 4 hours .

Walking (All Day) The January walk will be led by Bob Morris and Helen Salisbury. It will start outside the Severn Trent Visitor

Centre at Draycote Water, CV23 8AB. It’s approximately a 40 minute journey from Market Harborough. From

Rugby take the A426 south to Dunchurch and then follow signs to Southam. About a mile further on from

Walking Tuesday Half Day It was a glorious December day for our Christmas walk from The Queens Head pub at Saddington. Our circular

walk took us over to Smeeton Westerby via the canal, where we had a break for mulled wine and mince pies.

Then it was back over the fields with some wonderful views before we climbed up Saddington hill to the pub.

Once again the group enjoyed a fantastic three course Christmas meal . Diana Baxter

Walking Wednesday Half Day By the time you read this our January walk will have either taken place or been abandoned because of the

weather/ground conditions!! February walk details will be in next month's Newsletter.
