It was probably this barrow which produced an Early Bronze Age bone pin is now in the Ashmolean Museum (Evans, Ancient Stone Implements, 2432). It is hoped the mound may be scheduled. J. A. D. THORPE LUBENHAM. 7u871 Mr. F. P. Strongman has cut a section through the long bank which flanks the river-cut east of the Old Hall. No dating evidence was found. The Old Hall itself is an interesting building and would repay study. (Section in Leic. Museum.) THURMASTON. 617084 During building operations a large Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery has been dis- covered. This is of considerable archa::ological significance as it is the first to be scientifically dug in this area. By kindness of the contractors, Messrs. Lamyman & Son, 95 urns were recovered and are now being restored and studied. A full report is in preparation, but a tentative date of late fifth century A.D. may be assumed. There have been practically no small finds save the calcined foot of a brooch and various parts of bone combs. (Material in Leic. Museum No. 580.1954.) WYFORDBY CROSS. 79u89 On 16 July 1954 a party from the Vaughan Archa::ological Society undertook the clearing of the wayside cross, hitherto almost completely buried by soil and under- growth. It stands on the north side of the road to Brentingby, about 200 yards west of Wyfordby church. The shaft and the octagonal base are of limestone, the shaft now standing to a height of 13 in. and set in a socket 9 in. square. It is much weathered and of cylindrical section. On two faces are four parallel incised grooves about 1 in. apart. The base is octagonal, each side being 24 in. long. It has a double plinth and is chamfered at the corners. The height of the ba~e is 17 in. A suggested date is the fourteenth century. The County Council have undertaken to construct a granite surround with gravel within, and will henceforth be responsible for its maintenance, as of that at Frisby. J. A. D.
