Our national fleet of vehicles is instrumental in providing solutions that ensure your waste is collected safely and responsibly.

We work with you to provide the right bin and segregation system to manage your waste, and ensure your residents optimise their recycling efforts to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill.

rAPIdSITA is one of the first resource recovery, recycling and waste management companies in Australia to embrace real-time reporting. SITA’s innovative RAPID system provides councils with real-time access to detailed information such as GPS tracking of collection trucks and details on bin rejections. This information is accessible to customers online.

Drivers also have access to real-time GPS information through the on-board computing system, including detailed maps of streets awaiting to be serviced, to ensure fast and efficient collection services.

SITA regularly upgrades the RAPID system to ensure superior service and meet the changing needs of councils.

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag readers are attached to all residential collection vehicles

All bin lifts are recorded regardless of bin tagging

All collected bin information is transmitted to a central database

The materials are manually and mechanically sorted, baled and sent to be remanufactured as new products.

At SITA’s MRF in Moruya,we recently commissioned a glass crushing machine madepossiblethroughanEPANSWRegional Infrastructure Grant. This new technology will help divert more than 2,400 tonnes of glass each year from landfill – enough to fill an Olympic size swimming pool.

It’s innovations like these that helped SITA’sNSWMRFstorecoverover90,000tonnes of recyclables in 2013.

SITA IN ThE COmmUNITy

SITACommunityGrantsSITA was the first waste company in Australia to launch a national grants program. Through the SITA Community Grants Program we aim to support organisations that make a profound difference to the local community, but too often struggle to attract financial support in achieving their goals.

In its inaugural grant round, the program received over 650 completed applications from groups across Australia. In April 2014, SITA announced the first twenty-one community groups to share in more than$96,000ofgrantfundingthroughthis initiative.

While some projects are individually quite small, their cumulative effect across local communities’ right around Australia are remarkable. Successful project recipients inNSWincludetheMacarthurCentrefor Sustainable Living ‘Little Explorers’ playgroup and kids club which helps children learn about the wonders of the natural environment and The Humour Foundation which arranges Clown Doctor visits for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Western Sydney.

CommunityPartnershipsSITA proactively partners with a diverse range of community organisations and environmentally-focused activities.

InNSW,thesepartnershipsincludelarge-scale environmental protection projects such as the endangered Corroboree Frog Breeding Program at Taronga Zoo, and not-for-profit groups like the Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation which provides essential services to children living in families affected by mental illness.

In other States, SITA supports local events and activities both large and small. From the annual Brisbane Festival in Queensland to the Hampton Park Community Garden in Victoria, we connect with activities that will have a positive and sustainable impact in Australian communities.

In 2013 our investment in community partnerships exceeded $154,000. These partnerships ranged from significant corporate sponsorships through to local in-kind waste collection services.

Environmental Education

SITA believes it has an essential role in educating the community about resource recovery, recycling and waste management practices.

Through our curriculum-based WastEd Time™ program, SITA provides in-school recycling and waste education services to primary schools to promote and enhance understanding of the relationships between waste and the environment.

Councils, residents and community groups are encouraged to undertake SITA site tours of our Advanced Resource Recovery Facilities, Material Recycling Facilities, Organics Resource Recovery Facilities and highly engineered landfills.

StakeholderRelationships

SITA is not only committed to investing in our communities, but to also being a good neighbour. Strong community relationships are integral to SITA’s operations in the localities and regions we serve.

Through our consultative, site-based Community Reference Groups our operational and stakeholder engagement teams regularly meet with site neighbours and interested individuals to ensure we manage our operations consistent with community expectations.

We also directly engage with a range of other stakeholders including customers, suppliers, employees, regulators, all levels of government, suppliers, unions and the waste and recycling industry to contribute to important public policy development on the future of waste.

SITA’seducationprograms encourage people to improve their recycling and resource recovery rates

Energy from Waste (EfW) has been presented as a sustainable way to manage the growing stream of municipal solid waste while providing environmentally friendly and domestic sources of energy.

In SITA’s inaugural seminar, we question whether EfW technology will come at the expense of current efforts to reuse or recycle waste.

We will explore the economic and policy aspects of waste management options and hear from some of Australia’s leading experts in the field.
