    ORGANICS RECOVERY FORCOMPOSTING

SITA works in partnerships with localcouncils and companies to achieveoptimum recovery of food and/orgarden organics. We are Australia'slargest processor of urban-generatedorganics, producing quality fit-for-purpose compost and mulchproducts that meet customer needsin specific applications all around thecountry.

TONNES OF PLASTIC WASRECYCLED IN AUSTRALIAFROM 2010-2011

  • ENERGY RECOVERY

Dry materials such as mixed plastics, timbers and textiles can also berecovered. These dry items have ahigh level of embedded energy andthrough our SITA-ResourceCoAdvanced Resource Recovery (ARRT)facility are turned into alternativefuels for use in existing powerstations or cement kilns.

The feedstock materials are sourcedfrom construction activities, refurbishments and site fit-outs,manufacturing facilities and other pre-sorted waste streams.

    DISPOSAL

While we aim to maximise thevolume of waste that is sent forrecycling and resource recovery, when hazardous or non-hazardouswaste cannot be recovered, it mustbe treated and disposed of underacceptable environmentalconditions.

SITA owns and operates Australiasmost highly engineered landfills.

Our landfill operations are carefullydesigned to minimise the amount ofspace used. This maximises theoperational lifetime of the landfill andlimit the environmental and socialimpacts of landfilling.

Biogas produced as waste breaksdown is captured and used togenerate green electricity that is fedinto the power grid.

ARRTs offer a more sustainable, higherorder resource recovery solution thanwaste disposal methods such asconventional landfills, bioreactorlandfills and incineration. Usingspecialist technologies, our facilitiesrecover and recycle valuable resourcesback into the economy. Organics can becomposted for use in mine sites andother rehabilitation projects toreplenish severely degraded soils, whiledry materials can be manufactured intoalternative fuels that replace fossil fuelsin our customers' industrial furnaces.SITA owns and operates 7 ARRTfacilities around the country approximately half of all the ARRTfacilities in Australia.

    6 COMPANY PROFILE

    ORGANIC RESOURCERECOVERY FACILITIES

SITA Organic Resource RecoveryFacilities are open-air compostingsystems that only accept source-separated organic material, such asgarden organics, liquid grease trap andsome commercial organic feedstocks, including timber and sawdust.

These materials are processed into highquality compost products for use inagriculture, and public open spacessuch as sporting fields and park gardenbeds, which improves the socialamenities of local communities. Otherquality composted products are used toimprove soil fertility and reduce theenvironmental harm associated withchemical fertiliser and pesticide usagein vegetable, fruit and wine production.

    COMPANY PROFILE 7

    MATERIALS RECYCLINGFACILITIES (MRF)

A MRF is where collection vehiclesunload recyclable materials, such asplastic containers, aluminium cans, glass, paper and cardboard, thathave been collected from residentialor commercial premises. Thematerials are manually andmechanically sorted, baled and sentas commodities to global markets.

    RESOURCE RECOVERYFACILITIES

A Resource Recovery Facility providesa consolidation point for unsortedmaterial collected from residential orcommercial premises and public drop-off facilities. Some resource recoverytakes place through segregation and/orprocessing onsite.

Material that is unable to be processedonsite is loaded into larger vehicles fortransportation to an ARRT, MRF or anOrganic Resource Recovery Facility.Residual materials are transported tolandfill.

Often transfer stations start out as asite for the temporary acceptance ofwaste and, through the introduction ofsorting and processing techology, become Resource Recovery Facilities.

    ENGINEERED LANDFILLS

SITA recognises that landfills play an important and necessary part inmanaging Australia's waste. EvenARRTs generate some residual wastewhich must be disposed of safely.

Secure, engineered landfills are thecommunitys best environmentalmanagement option for waste thatcannot yet be recycled or reused. SITAowns and operates Australias mosthighly engineered solid waste landfills.

Biogas generated from organic wastethat breaks down at SITAs landfills iscaptured and converted into electricity.

Long-term care, through ongoingmonitoring of capped and closedlandfills, is an important part of SITAscommitment to environmentprotection and rehabilitation programs.
