This expanding company has now started its own production line with a selected few products. This is sure to increase in the near future. Sika South Africa is delighted to announce the opening of their new concrete laboratory in Johannesburg. Business unit concrete will use this facility to further increase their core business as there is an increase in demand in the Gauteng area for Sika concrete admixtures. Sika is improving its service in this region by offering high quality technical support, backed by relevant concrete testing facilities and proce- dures to quantify and optimise their concrete quality and cost efficiency. The laboratory will enable the Sika concrete technologists within the Gauteng area to optimise concrete mixes for semi dry pavers, wet cast precasters, RMC producers (Ready mix concrete), and testing of Shotcrete materials used in tunnelling and mining. In the main concrete laboratory mixes are designed and tested to de- termine where they can be adjusted for optimization. The Sika concrete admixtures can improve water reduction, allowing for further reduction of cementitious binder contents while still maintaining concrete workability with similar or improved strength development. Sika invests in New Concrete Laboratory in Gauteng

Sika East Africa has recently become its own company positioned under Sika South Africa. This expanding company has now started its own production line with a selected few products. This is sure to increase in the near future.

Sika South Africa is delighted to announce the opening of their new concrete laboratory in Johannesburg.

Business unit concrete will use this facility to further increase their core business as there is an increase in demand in the Gauteng area for Sika concrete

admixtures. Sika is improving its service in this region by offering high quality technical support, backed by relevant concrete testing facilities and proce-

dures to quantify and optimise their concrete quality and cost effi ciency. The laboratory will enable the Sika concrete technologists within the Gauteng area

It seems like only yesterday that I was wishing my predecessor, Niall Wylde, “Bon Voyage” to take up the responsibility of GM GCC Countries. Niall has now of-fi cially completed his 2½ year stint in Dubai and has decided to return to Sika South Africa. He will be taking over the portfolio of Business Development Manager, focusing on new business in the Border Countries sur-rounding SA. So Welcome back Niall!

As mentioned in my previous edition of Sika Beat, the nation, and particularly the construction industry, are still awaiting the government’s so-called promised spend of R850 Billion on infrastructure. Hence the fo-

cus is now not only within our borders but beyond as well. In saying this, our Industry division continues to strive to conquer new applica-tion fi elds in Wind and Solar energy and sandwich paneling, whilst still the undisputed leaders in AGR in South Africa. Our BU Concrete division has recently opened its new concrete lab in Gauteng; this will help in serving our existing client base and allow us to penetrate the existing concrete market in Gauteng. BU Contractors still continue to perform extremely well in this depressed market, showing how important service and technical expertise is to our customers. BU Distribution continues to grow with its new leader Carike at the helm, implementing new strategies and plans to combat this extremely competitive market.

Sika has recently received several major distinctions that will reinforce our role as a leading global company. From June 2012, Sika will be up-lifted into Switzerland’s top 30-company Swiss Leader Index (SLI). This has quickly followed the announcement that Sika is, for the fi rst time, one of the top 50 Swiss Brands, and, that Sika is being added to the list of the 20 companies in Switzerland with the most patents registered. Three accolades in a matter or weeks.

On 14 June 2012 Sika made signifi cant strides to becoming a recognized, leading, global company. Due to our higher sales and profi ts, and consequently

growing market value, as well as the turnover of Sika stocks traded at the Swiss Stock Ex- change SIX, Sika will be lifted from the Swiss Small and Midcap

Index into the prestigious Swiss Leader Index (SLI). Listed in the SLI are Switzerland’s top 30 companies, including Nestlé, Novartis, Roche, ABB, Holcim

and Schindler.

Only a few weeks prior, Sika was awarded an entry into the list of

target markets. Furthermore, the results show that our excellent

company.

Sika sponsors IZZY Trust Rugby tour to Argentina

David van der Ross, a member of Sika’s Technical Sales team in Cape Town, demonstrated Sika’s caring philosophy when he arranged to sponsor two local

schools with Sika product.

David says: “With the way that climate is changing, the country is experi-

encing major rainfall. Two schools that were struggling with leaking roofs

were Hazendal Primary and Silverlea Primary so I decided, along with

Sika, to step in and help. The two schools are in Athlone. Hazendal school

provides education for 600 kids and Silverlea has 700 learners; many from

the townships and underprivileged areas”. With the help of Sika’s donation

of 40 x 5l Sealofl ex Professional, and the contract applicator who offered

to apply the product free of charge, the leaners are now able to enjoy dry

classrooms due to the repairs to the roofs of their educational facilities.

Says David: “Education is of the utmost importance, especially in a devel-

oping country, so if corporates like Sika contribute towards the improve-

ment of facilities, then slowly but surely we will provide our children with a

comfortable place to learn.”

Izitini Zolwazi – the Izzi Trust – is a children’s charity whose focus is to

improve the standard of education of children in South Africa.

This is achieved in three ways: by running outreach programmes at

underprivileged schools and creches; by providing bursaries to independ-

ent schools; and by encouraging and facilitating environmental, cultural

and academic events that bring together children from our country’s many

different economical and social groups.

Sika became a sponsor of the Rugby Tour Bursary for students at Tyger

Valley College which took place from 15 to 26 April 2012.

Wayne Smithers, technical manager at Sika, recently became involved in a community project with Queensburgh Pre-Primary and Siyathuka Creche.

Wayne organised for Sika to donate160 units of Sika Raintite Kit for painting and waterproofi ng of the school and crèche.

“The staff at Siyathuthka crèche were very grateful for the donation as they look after childrenand babies to six years old, from low income homes.

They rely on donations to survive”, writes Mrs. A Searle- Principal of Queensburgh Pre-Primary.

QPPS is a non-profi t organisation and relies on school fess and fundraising for maintenance of the schools’ premises.

Back-a-buddy is a web-based charity initiative which enables individuals,

known as charity champions, to support their chosen charity or cause on

the back-a-buddy website.

In February, charity champion Simon Allen, MD of Stefanutti Stocks Marine,

dedicated his cycle tour to providing education for one year to at least one

underprivileged child. A request for a donation was sent to Sika and we

jumped at the chance to support this project. Simon’s chosen charity was

Afrika Tikkun.

Simon writes on his back-a-buddy page: “Thank you for visiting my

fundraising page. This year I have decided to Be a Sport and raise funds

for Afrika Tikkun by completing the Pick ‘n Pay Argus cycle tour. Each

cyclist who rides in the Each One Teach One team has been challenged

to see how many children they can send to school by the end of their

race. It costs R2160 a year to send a child to one of Afrika Tikkun’s Early

Childhood Development Centres (ECD). Children that attend ECD centres

are less likely to turn to crime, and are more likely to become productive

citizens. This will then have a direct result in overall economic improvement

and we will have stronger and healthier communities! Please support me in

Sika commits to Responsible Care 2012

The annual Essential Trade Day was held on 20 May 2012 at the NASREC

Centre in Gauteng. This is an opportunity for Essential store members to

meet with invited suppliers and view what they have to offer for the coming

year. Sika’s Carike Pieters, Raj Naidoo and Wayne Myburgh manned the

Sika stand, focusing on Sika MaxTack, Cemfl ex and Sikafl ex-11FC, and

showcasing Sika’s varied product range.

Sika ran a special promotion for Essential members who placed a stock

replenishment or opening order. There was a mock up store at the centre

where each supplier was offered shelving space, which proved a great

way of creating extra brand awareness for members who don’t currently

stock Sika products. “The shelves were stocked with Sika products and

merchandised with Sika’s bright POS - creating a bold visual impression

that got noticed by the approximate 2,000 delegates attending the event.”

said Raj.

Carike reported “Essential Trade Day was fantastic all round, with the Sika

stand constantly busy as lots of new relationships were formed.” Sika and

Essential look forward to working together for success in future.

On 6 June 2012, Sika attended the annual Builders Trade Fair at the Coca-

Cola dome in Gauteng. As a fi rst for Sika, it was great to be invited to this

event which is frequented by Massbuild’s Builders’ Warehouse, Builders’

Trade Depot and Builders’ Express members, as well as their top contrac-

tors and bakkie bregade belonging to the Walmart group.

Sika’s Paul Adams, Carike Pieters, Mervyn Naidoo, Raj Naidoo, and Mark

Brennan, were there. Spotlighting and promoting the Builders’ Tite range

was a strategic move, as it is the Builders’ waterproofi ng house brand

manufactured by Sika. Sika’s stand with banners, and a TV demonstra-

tion of how the various distribution products are applied played continu-

ally. Sika’s specialised products were on display and product samples,

brochures and fun fortune cookies were handed out.

As the contractors and bakkie builders were also invited to the Trade Fair,

the Sika team was given the opportunity to increase brand awareness

amongst them and educate them on Sika’s comprehensive product range.

As a fi rst for Sika, it was a successful day all round.

Sika’s Seal the Deal competition was held over Easter at Builders Warehouse

and Builders Express stores nationwide. As an exclusive promotion for the

Massbuild group, there were awesome prizes up for grabs to loyal custom-

ers purchasing any Sika product or Builders’ Tite range product between

27 March and 30 April 2012. First prize was a fantastic getaway valued at

R10 000, second prize was a R5 000 getaway and third prize was a hamper

of Sika products valued at R1 000.

Sika congratulates fi rst prize winner Mrs Enid du Plessis, second prize win-

ner Mr Hermann Weiler and Mr Mogammat Salie on taking home third prize.

Top Gear for Sika’s top Industry Customers

South African travellers will be seeing Sika’s bold yellow and red branding

on our national roads - from Cape Town to Gauteng, Durban, PE, Bloem

and Richards Bay. Two massive 34-ton trucks transporting Sika products

between our six branches recently received a Sika branding make-over,

which is a high impact way of promoting our brand by reaching thousands

of people every day. Vehicle/Truck branding is constantly working and

generating advertising impressions even while we are sitting in our offi ces,

it emphasizes our professional image and leaves a lasting impression, so

Sika will always be top of mind. Sika prides itself in a bold image with its

recognisable brand and logo. Seeing our Sika branded trucks and vehicles

on the South African National roads reinforces in the mind of the consumer

that Sika is all around and growing from strength to strength.

Markex is the defi nitive marketing, promotions and special events Trade

Exhibition hosted annually at the Sandton Convention Centre, and 2012’s

event was held on the 12th - 14th June 2012.

Sika’s marketing team of Bronwyn Littley and Nadine Thurtell along with BU

manager - Distribution, Carike Pieters, ventured into this cauldron of magi-

cal marketing concoctions to explore new ideas and innovations for Sika’s

merchandising, promotional materials and display stands. The day was

well-spent fi nding new suppliers, concepts, designs and gimmicky items

which will increase brand awareness and set Sika apart from our competi-

tors. Our modest marketing department looks forward to implementing

these new ideas in the near future… Watch this space!

Grandmark International is a recently acquired Key Account in the AGR

fi eld. Much effort has gone into Sika’s marketing and technical to ensure

that they have the necessary tools and expertise to use our products ac-

curately.

Part of Sika’s valuable service offering is technical training. Roland van der

Merwe and Jose Alvarez, Sika’s technical gurus, kicked off the Certifi ed

Technician Training Programme at Sika head offi ce on 25 June. Topics in-

cluded: introduction to Sika Industry, Sika’s primerless system, preparation

and fi tting of windscreen, body & corrosion treatment, and Sika’s safety

concept ‘No-shortcuts to safety’. Practical topics included cleaning, priming

and playing with the products. Training has also taken place at the Selby

branch Crown Mines branch (Gauteng), Pretoria and Polokwane. Bloem,

Nelspruit, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth are next!

Grandmark International is fast becoming one of the major players in

the AGR Industry and informative training sessions like these can only

strengthen the relationship between us and ensure that the Sika brand is

synonymous with quality and professionalism.

On the 16 and 17 June 2012 a much anticipated event took place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in

the heart of Durban. The Top Gear Show was on all of South Africa’s lips and it was happening here –

in Sika SA’s home town! Sika staff jumped at the opportunity to attend this world class event showcas-

ing an enviable collection of cars, death defying stunts, eye catching displays and all presented by the

famous Top Gear presenters – Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond! Sika’s Jacques

Reinecke, BU Manager - Industry, accompanied top clients, Micheal Warren and Ronnie Maritz from

Glasfi t, to show his appreciation for their continued support. The threesome enjoyed eyebogling the

courageous stuntmen driving fl aming cars from well situated seats, and all agreed, “an unforgettable

day”!

at ConFrex 2012 SeminarsSika Extravaganza for SARMA

The theme of this CSSA (Concrete Society of Southern Africa) and C&Ci

(Cement & Concrete Institute) one day seminar was ‘Concrete Fluid-retain-

ing and Excluding Structures’. Sika was in attendance at all four venues:

Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban, between the 25th

and 28th June. The seminar covered standards, specifi cations, materials,

design, case studies, and both integral and applied waterproofi ng. With as

many as 120 delegates at some regions, ranging from engineers, govern-

ment offi cials, contractors and suppliers to academia, everyone was there

to increase their knowledge on the latest technology and thinking around

this strategic sector of the built environment.

May was a busy time for networking at Sika’s Cape Town branch

and where better to mix business with pleasure than on the golf

course. On 7th May it was the Big Fish, Little Fish Golf Day in sup-

port of Elundini (Home of the disabled and Educare centre). Kevin

golf, all in aid of a good cause.

A few days later on the 10th May the Western Cape CSSA (Concrete

Society of Southern Africa) held its Golf Day at Parow Golf Club

where players were competing for the PPC fl oating trophy. The

objectives of this Golf Day are: fi rstly, a contribution towards

one of the pillars of the CSSA - namely to provide a network-

ing forum for all involved in the concrete industry, and sec-

ondly, to raise funds for the Western Cape Branch education

fund. Both objectives were duly achieved and a great day of

golfi ng was had!

Sika took an extravagant leap at this year’s SARMA conference! Not only

was our bold brand displayed throughout the conference hall but we also

sponsored the “Cocktail Extravaganza” at the evening social festivities –

leaving delegates with a memorable brand association with Sika.

The SARMA (South African Readymix Association) 2012 conference was

held in Johannesburg at Emperors Palace on 18 and 19 June 2012. These

two days were fi lled with lectures and seminars presented by dozens of

industry experts as guest speakers. The SARMA and ASPASA AGM’s were

also held on the 18 June.

As one of the eight sponsors of the conference, Sika attended en masse:

Paul Adams, Andre Barnard, Riaan Oosthuizen, Jason Callister, Craig

Handler, Bronwyn Littley and Nadine Thurtell made up our A-Team, taking

this opportunity to be seen as a force to be reckoned with. Sika’s iconic

collateral was recognisable everywhere – from red and yellow triangles

fi lled with Lindt chocolate balls on every delegate’s table, to our bold ban-

ners displayed across the room, and a Sika stand laden with brochures and

product manual discs for delegates to take home.

Once Monday’s AGMs were over, the real fun began! Delegates headed

to Platia Greek Taverna for the evening’s festivities which kicked off with

the Cocktail Extravaganza sponsored by Sika. We made sure everyone

interacted by mixing people up into different teams, teaching them the

art of creating cocktails and then watching them perform their new tricks

for the judges. When all teams had presented their cocktails, everyone

was ready for food and a hearty dinner was served. This was followed by

entertainment by a belly dancer and, being an authentic Greek restaurant,

plates were thrown onto the fl oor. Loads of fun and

laughter was had and everyone went home with a

new skill - how to make three types of cocktails

– compliments of Sika!

On 30th March 2012, Sika Bloemfontein took part in the Lillies Sales and

Services golf day on behalf of BU Concrete to help fundraise for the local

AFM Worship centre. In celebration its 40th Anniversary AFM Worship Cen-

tre aims to distribute 4000 bibles (costing R30 per bible) and 4000 food

parcels (costing R50 per parcel), so they needed a total amount of

R320 000. This multi-cultural congregation reaches out to rural communi-

ties and their vision is “fi nd favour with God and the Community and to

grow and grow and grow.” Holding a golf day was one way of raising funds

and Sika supported this by sponsoring a four ball and placing an ad in

Bloemfontein’s local newspaper.

Aurecon). It was a great day of interacting with new Sika clients and enjoy-

ing the golf.

Sika shows off at Greenbuilding ConferenceSika proudly showed off its green credentials at the 2012 Greenbuilding Conference, held during Sustainability Week, 25-29 July, at the Sandton

Convention centre. Sustainability week consists of a collection of trade events within our industry, including Greenbuilding, Water Resources, Waste,

Transport & Mobility, Energy Effi ciency, and Green Home & Lifestyle Fair. There are over 100 Eco-product and technology exhibits.

The Green Building conference concentrated on four specifi c modules, namely: World and SA Leading Green Building Design; Research and Innova-

tion in materials and technologies; Energy Effi ciency in buildings - New and Retro fi t; and Design charrettes.

Sika exhibited in the Greenbuilding section, showcasing our technologically advanced Green Roofi ng range. Green roofs present a solution in the quest

for sustainability, particularly in urban developments where the emphasis is on increasing biodiversity and quality of life. They can aid planning con-

sent and provide many environmental and economic benefi ts, including prolonging the life of the roof waterproofi ng system, enhancing the aesthetics

of the building, utilising roof space, improving thermal performance, aiding noise reduction, providing habitats for plants and animals, reducing storm

water run-off, and absorbing Co².

The exhibition was open to the public and professionals free of charge, so everyone was invited to appreciate the display of these vast issues sur-

rounding the sustainability of our environment.

Sika Waterproofi ng for WARAC SeminarThe WARAC (Waterproofi ng and Roofi ng Association Cape) seminar was

held at Pentec College in Bellville South on 18 May 2012. WARAC hosts

roughly four seminars per year and this time Sika was invited to host a

seminar showcasing our product range in the relevant fi elds of Waterproof-

ing and Roofi ng. The Seminar was attended by approximately 30 people

including contractors, facilities managers, engineers and WARAC members.

Jerome O’ Ryan of WARAC presented on Health and Safety and Sika’s

Anthony Webster gave a presentation focusing on Sika Waterproofi ng prod-

ucts, which was followed by demonstrations on Sika Cemfl ex, Torch-on’s,

Sikalastic 600 Series, Sealants and Combifl ex. Samples of Sikalastic 150,

Cemfl ex, Sikalastic 600 Series were handed out to the delegates to experi-

ence fi rst-hand what the fi nal product should look and feel like.

Sika’s branded Gazebo and fl ags were erected outside and the Sika team,

consisting of Anthony Webster, Kevin Kimbrey and Jan Ellis, offered techni-

cal theoretical and practical training over a 2 day period. WARAC invited

guests to stay for a meal after the Practical Training where colleagues in

the industry were able to enjoy a sociable evening.

Sika’s Macro and Micro Fibres came to the fore recently when concrete slabs were laid in Tzaneen, Limpopo Province for a large chicken breeding

company. In terms of European Union regulations, cracking of fl ooring where livestock is housed must be completely eliminated to prevent bacterial

growth, which can cause contamination of the stock. Andre Erasmus was Sika’s Technical advisor to the project.

The cost of disease on poultry farms results in low production performance, meaning fewer eggs, less meat, slow growth rate, and poor product

quality. Three elements of biosecurity help to reduce such infections - segregation and traffi c control, cleaning, and disinfection. When all dirt is

removed, little organic material is left for disease agents to thrive in. Eliminating cracking in the fl oor slabs will reduce the spaces in which bacteria

breed and therefore concrete fl oors are highly recommended, as they are easy to clean. Due to very high on-site temperatures during this project,

the occurrence of shrinkage cracking in the fresh concrete was highly likely, but the problem was solved when Sika assured the client and the

contractor, Echo Coldrooms, that their Macro and Micro Fibres were the ideal solution.

As an alternative to welded mesh reinforcing, Sika Fibres F-Macro X 40/0.8 was mixed with the concrete prior to placement of the slabs. Consisting

of structural synthetic polypropylene macro fi bres with an X-shaped cross sectional surface area, 40mm in length x 0.8mm in diameter, this highly

effective product provides excellent bonding while increasing the load bearing and energy absorption capacity of concrete.

Sika Fibres F-Macro X 40/0.8 is corrosion resistant, increases the fl exural strength, while its high impact and abrasion resistance increases the

durability of concrete. This homogenous reinforcement is ideally suited for use in mining, tunneling, slope stabilization, pipes and culverts, blast

resistant structures, safes, cellars as well as pavements and road overlays.

Due to the mechanical properties of Sika Fibres F-Macro X 40/0.8, Echo Coldrooms was able to enlarge the saw cuts and construction joints in the

fl oors. This allows for more movement between the slabs, which reduces tension in the concrete slabs and further minimizes threats of cracking.

As an additional reinforcement and specifi cally for control of early plastic shrinkage and settlement cracking, Sika Micro Fibres was added to the

concrete. This product consists of 12mm long Fibsol polypropylene

micro fi bres that reduce the tendency for plastic and drying shrinkage

cracking. Improving durability, abrasion resistance and impact resist-

ance in newly cast concrete, these fi bres also reduce water migration

and permeability. Sika Fibres are applicable to all types of mortars and

concrete which demonstrate a tendency to cracking, such as façade

render, precast products, as well as roads, pavements and concrete

slabs and overlays.

Both Sika Macro and Micro Fibre products are safe and easy to use.

Construction time reduced to an absolute minimum owing to their being

pre-mixed with the concrete in the Ready Mix trucks, and by eliminating

the placement of welded mesh.

Sika’s Innovative Solutions

Founded in 1987, Fairfi eld Dairy is situated in Howick, KwaZulu Natal. Recently, a large

extension to the dairy was planned which would require not only highly durable fl ooring,

but coatings that should comply with the stringent hygiene standards set by the food

and beverage industry. It therefore came as no surprise when products from Sika’s top

quality Sikafl oor and Sikafl ex ranges were specifi ed by specialist contractor, Concrete

Laser Flooring, who commenced work on this 2500m project in December 2011. Sika’s

Warren McDaniel was onsite to ensure application went smoothly.

Over 1,000 kits of Sikafl oor-20 N PurCem were supplied to coat the fl oors of the new production rooms. Its fl uid consistency and rapid one-step applica-

tion requires less labour to install than conventional heavy-duty PU trowel grade screeds. Sikafl oor-29 N PurCem was applied around the fl oors and on the

walls of the dairy. This high strength, polyurethane mortar provides a fi nely-textured, smooth aggregate appearance, is ideally suited for food processing

plants, freezers, laboratories and workshops. Both of these Sikafl oor products conform to international standards pertaining to contact with foodstuffs and

provide excellent mechanical, abrasion and chemical resistance. To seal the fl oor joints, Sika Primer-3N and Sikafl ex PRO-3 were used.

With Fairfi eld Dairy operating on a 24 hour basis, it was imperative that the contractor complete the project timeously so as not to interfere with produc-

tion. Although these applications required a high degree of attention to detail, the excellent workmanship of Concrete Laser Flooring in combination with

the ease of application and outstanding quality of Sika’s world-renowned products, resulted in the project being completed well within the time allocated.

Fairfi eld Dairy can rest assured that its new extension fl oors will stand the test of time.

Sika’s Solid Flooring for Ugandan Brewery

Sika’s Innovative Solutions

Sika’s superior products were top choice of contractor Projects Inter-

national, when the Port Bell Brewery in Uganda needed renovations

to the fl ooring in its packline area. Idyllically situated on the shores

of Lake Victoria, Port Bell Brewery lies just seven miles from central

Kampala and is a division of East African Breweries Ltd, a subsidiary

of global beverage giant Diageo. The NCT tiling in the packline area of

the brewery had problems due to spillages causing the epoxy grouting

to crack, which resulted in the tiles cracking and delaminating. Diageo

therefore requisitioned the installation of new, high-impact fl ooring

that would be resistant to heat and caustic soda; the specifi cation of

Sika’s high performance fl ooring products was the unequivocal next

step. George Christie, Sika’s East Africa consultant was on site to

advise.

Approximately 1,850m of the packline area that contains conveyors,

and which is not subjected to heat, was coated with a 5mm layer of

Sikafl oor-261 ZA MTR screed. Sikafl oor-261 ZA BCT, the broadcast

system of this product, is ideal for wet process areas as found in the

food and beverage industry.

The remaining 1,650m fl oor area, which is subjected to heat and

caustic soda from the bottle washers, pasteurizers, fi llers and label

machines, was coated with a 7mm layer of Sikafl oor-20 N PurCem.

The fl uid consistency of Sikafl oor-20 N PurCem requires less labour to

install than conventional heavy duty modifi ed PU trowel grade screeds,

and typically no concrete primer or sealer is necessary.

The bases of all drains in the packline area were coated with

Sikafl oor-20 N PurCem, while the sides were coated with

Sikafl oor-31 N PurCem. Both of these outstanding Sika products boast

international approval for use in food processing plants.

Diageo allowed 30 days for the completion of this 3500m project,

which therefore necessitated an area of approximately 120m being

completed each day. To prevent running behind schedule, at certain

stages Projects International decided to work through the night.

Sika Renovates Prominent

Cape Town Building

In 2010 Group 5 was awarded a contract by the City of Cape Town to

renovate 4 Dorp Street, a prominent building situated in the heart of the

city. BBI Consulting Engineers was contracted to manage all civil engineer-

ing aspects of the project. Jakupa Architects and CS Studio Architects

specifi ed eighteen of Sika’s products for the renovations. Commencing in

October 2010, it was estimated that the project, which involved a surface

area of 28000m2 and a total of 3037 windows, would take approximately

one year for completion. Anthony Webster was Sika’s Technical Sales

Consultant to the project.

Window renovations called for Sikafl ex -11FC and Sikafl ex AT-Façade. For

protection of the glass as well as worker safety, all windows were insulated

with reusable timber boards. Due to noise created by the city centre,

acoustic tests were conducted to determine noise pollution levels pen-

etrating the building. As a result all windows were insulated and bonded.

Concrete renovations included; Sika MonoTop-610; Sika MonoTop-615 HB;

and Sika MonoTop-612.

Various waterproofi ng and bonding agents have been supplied;

Sika’s Cemfl ex, SikaLatex, SikaTop-Armatec 110 EpoCem and

SikaTop Seal-107 ZA. A problem was encountered during surface prepara-

tions when water jet pressure, which was originally quoted, was found to

be insuffi cient to create adequate open-pore surfaces for maximum adhe-

sion. The contractors resorted to using grinding machines that were fi tted

with vacuums to extract excess dust created. Once prepared, the surfaces

were coated with two applications of SikaTop Seal-107 ZA.

Grouting was fi nished using SikaGrout-212. Sikacrete-214 has been used

for casting sections where volumes required are too large for conventional

grouts and too small and inaccessible for normal concreting procedures.

For high performance adhesions, Sika AnchorFix-2 was used. The main

challenge encountered during this project was delamination of the external

plaster, which not only posed public safety problems, but also caused

signifi cant noise pollution. This resulted in labour working night shifts to

complete the delamination process, while repairs were carried out during

the day.

Sika South Africa Product Range

This strong, maritime, one-component sealant is used for fl exible joint

sealing on boat and ship construction, for interior and exterior applica-

tions. It is a multifunctional product and can be used on most common

substrates including wood, metals, plastics or ceramic. Sikafl ex-291i

has high elasticity, good weather resistance, waster resistance, is non-

corrosive, overpaintable, VOC and low emissions, wide adhesion range,

wheelmark approved.

This maritime, one-component, construction adhesive is used for boat

and ship construction; it has high mechanical load capacity and is

suitable for structural applications with dynamic stress. It can be used

on most common substrates including wood, metals, aluminium, and

plastics like GRP or ABS. Sikafl ex-292i is elastic, has high mechanical

load capacity, tolerance gapping, vibration dampening, non-corrosive,

water resistant, VOC and emission free, wide adhesion range, and

wheel mark approved.

This weather resistant glazing adhesive/sealant is used for glazing or-

ganic glass used in boat and yacht construction. It is weather-resistant

making it suitable for applications open to UV exposure. Sikafl ex-295i

has good workability and is wheelmark approved.

Sthandiwe has recently been appointed receptionist at Sika’s head offi ce in Durban. Sthandiwe was born and bred in Ntuzuma Township. After matricu-

lating at Newlands East Secondary she studied junior bookkeeping at Damelin. Before starting at Sika, Sthandiwe worked at Flavour Craft for seven

years as senior receptionist. She is married with three kids, two girls (10 and 13 months) and one boy (13) and loves listening to good music, watching

movies and reading.

Sika recently welcomed Warren as the new technical sales BTR (Bus Truck Rail) representative for Industry in Gauteng. Warren grew up in Stutterheim

in the Eastern Cape and attended school in East London at Port Rex THS, and later in Johannesburg at Monument Hoer Skool. Warren was contracted

to play rugby for the Golden Lions Rugby Union from 2006 to 2008 and was involved in the professional rugby scene until 2009. Warren has worked

as a sales consultant for seven months and as a learner blaster at a mining company for 10 months. He is the proud father of two sons, Logan (4) and

Caleb (7 months) with his beautiful fi ancé Liza-Mari. In Warren’s spare time he enjoys fi shing, mountain biking, golf and being outdoors.

Ross recently joined Sika as the new technical sales AGR representative for Industry in Gauteng. Ross grew up in Welkom in the Free State, matriculat-

ing from Welkom High School in 1995. He obtained his N6 National Diploma in Electrical Engineering at Welkom Technical College and then became

an apprenticeship in Armature Winding. After moving to Johannesburg about fi ve years ago to pursue a career as a sales consultant, he worked for

engineering companies such as Zest and Eaton Corporation. Ross is married and recently became a proud father. Interests include cricket and indoor

soccer.

Mark recently joined Sika as the new technical sales representative for distribution in Gauteng. Born in Ireland Mark has been in sales for 22 years. He

ran his own business for three years importing and manufacturing the original “IRN BRU” cold drinks from Scotland. Before joining Sika Mark worked

for a construction chemical company as a key account manager for the Gauteng and Limpopo areas for fi ve years. Mark is married with fi ve kids, “all

boys”, the eldest is 20 years old and the youngest 18 months. His hobbies are owning a motor cycle club (MCC) on the West Rand where he enjoys

riding his bike and spending time with his “other family”. He also does a lot of charity work and is well known for hosting the “ Kids Christmas bash” in

December where MCC hosts up to 1000 kids. Mark is proud to be part of the Sika family.

Marchant has joined Sika as technical sales rep for contractors in Gauteng. He grew up in Krugersdorp and attended Technical High School, Nic

Diederichs. He went on to Technical College where he obtained his N5, covering Civil and Mechanical Engineering. Marchant has worked as a concrete

draughtsman and sales rep for KBW (concrete slab supplier) and as a concrete designer/estimator for Echo Prestress. Marchant started his career in

Construction chemicals gaining experience with two companies in the industry. Marchant and his wife, Maryke, welcomed a baby girl on the 26 July

2012, and they have a son Jahndroux, born in 2009. Marchant’s hobbies are fl y fi shing, travelling as much as he can, and playing the drums.

Nondumiso Phetha, Sika’s Development Chemist in the laboratory at Head Offi ce, was given the opportunity to fl y to Sika Deutschland in

Stuttgart, Germany for Sika’s innovative training. Nondu was given individual training for two weeks on epoxys, polyurethanes, waterborne

epoxy and adhesives with the main focus being on Sikafl oor-261 and Purcem. Local raw materials were fl own to Sika Deutschland so that

training could be carried out using these same ingredients that are usually used by Nondu, and in order for the experts in Deutschland to assist

her with suggestions and ideas when manufacturing specifi c local products. Nondu

was privileged to be trained by Dr Uwe on epoxys, Patricia Gimeno, R & D chemist,

on Purcem and Dr Lars on Waterborne epoxy’s.

As it was Nondu’s fi rst visit overseas she had been very excited at the invitation yet

somewhat nervous of what to expect when she arrived. She was also apprehensive

about leaving her hubby and kiddies at home.

“Everything was set up perfectly and it all ran smoothly. I was overwhelmed by the

whole experience and am grateful for this opportunity of developing my knowledge

in the chemical fi eld and to grow as a person. I was so surprised by how accom-

modating and helpful everyone was there and am still in contact with everyone.”

Priya Naidoo, HR accountant at Sika Head Offi ce, has been keeping fi t by playing volleyball. On

the 16 June, as we celebrated Youth Day in South Africa, Priya and her team from Sri Sathya Sai

Centre of Crossmoor, a spiritual organisation, played their hearts out at the Pengium Park Grounds

in Chatsworth. “The focus of the day was to get the youth together from the organisation and enjoy

a day of volleyball,” says Priya. She and her team mates sported Sika’s HOT training shirts in efforts

to look a formidable force to be reckoned with - and with the Sika brand backing them, we wouldn’t

expect anything less than a win!

Thirosha Govender, Assistant Accountant at Sika Head Offi ce, also took part in the volleyball, repre-

senting her team Sri Sathya Centre of Woodhurst. The gloves came off in friendly rivalry and a great

day was spent with the youth of the community.

Internal Team Building- Action Cricket There’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition to bat some energy into the workforce and when Sika’s Head Offi ce Staff came together for the annual Ac-

tion Cricket team building session, it was all for one and one for all. On July 5th the four teams, made up of Blue Dolphins, Red Devils, Black Panthers, and

Green Mambas, played against each other – to the death - producing a few injuries and many stiff muscles. The winning trophy went to the Red Devils (a

close second well-earned by the Black Panthers). The Blue Dolphins, headed by our very competitive MD, Paul Adams, came second to last- one point ahead

of the Green Mambas. When the games were over, a great feast from the braai was laid out for us. Gathering together as teammates and spectators for an

afternoon out the offi ce was a great tonic, revving us all up to work hard for the remainder of the year!

For the third time, Rebecca Mabulesa, from the Gauteng branch, took on

the world famous ultra marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sun-

day, 3 June 2012. Rebecca completed the race in 10 hours 24 minutes

and said that her run went better this year as she was well prepared after

her past two races. “I knew what challenges and diffi culties to expect from

the down run as I ran that route in my fi rst Comrades. The weather was

good, and although I didn’t manage to achieve my goal time I did improve

on last year’s time and didn’t have any ankle pain this time. I look forward

to next year’s race and working towards my goal time.” She says, and

wishes to thank Sika for sponsoring her running shoes.

On 7 April 2012, over the Easter weekend, Herman van Rensburg, Area

Sales Manager for the Bloemfontein branch, completed the Two Oceans

marathon in Cape Town; a distance of 56km in 6 hours 43 minutes. Her-

man said: “My run went very well considering the bad weather. It rained the

entire race and an icy wind blew so defi nitely not ideal running conditions.

Even so, the race was well supported from the sidelines, helping the

runners get through the race. It was a great experience and a nice long

weekend away in Cape Town.”

Preston, Distribution Sales clerk at the Gauteng branch,

and his wife Rochelle welcomed their new beautiful baby

girl, Shaelyn Peyton Thulsie to the world on 27 May 2012.

Shaelyn was delivered at the Garden City Clinic weighing

in at 3.22kg. Preston says that she is very naughty and

very forward and that she hates blankets and nappies! He

also said that she loves the bottle with a shot of infacare.

Christo, technical Sales at the Cape Town branch, and his

wife Elke were surprised by their little blessing who made

an early appearance on 13 May 2012 (Mother’s day).

Francois Christiaan Fuhri arrived two months prematurely

at 31 weeks in the Panorama Medi Clinic, weighing 1.87kg.

Christo says that little Francois is doing just fi ne and that

the proud parents are very grateful for their newborn son.
