Klein Kariba in Bela Bela rises from the ashes

The ATKV Klein Kariba holiday resort inBela Bela officially reopened their doorsto the public on Monday, 1 September. The resort had been closed for the past

six months due to the two freak floodswhich hit Bela Bela in short successionin March of this year.It was reported that parts of the roads

inside the resort had been swept awayand caused damage to the electricityand sewage systems.According to Wim de Wet, the resort’s

manager, the flooding caused significantdamage to various accommodation, entertainment and habitat areas of theresort.“A large visitor’s lapa next to the

restaurant and 14 caravan parkingplaces were flattened by the mass ofwater, and significant damage wascaused to the restaurant, a number offlats and parts of the recreation areas,”he said.De Wet said that both floods were

described as ‘freak floods’ by experts. He explained that all of the resort’s

buildings had been built above the 100year flood mark as required by law.De Wet said that the first flood had

been the most severe in 150 years in thearea, and they were confident that theresort would be repaired within a month.“We were full of confidence that it would

be possible to reopen the resort within amonth’s time, when the second floodoccurred on 13 March, exactly on themorning that the assessors, architectsand quantity surveyors were on site toestimate the repairs that had to be done. The damage caused by the second floodtotally queered the pitch for the ATKV toquickly reopen the resort. According toexperts the second flood was the worstover the past 500 years in the Waterbergarea,” he said.

“Before the flooda small streamletof mountain waterran to the damlower down on thesite, but the floodshave ripped open abroad canal andcarried awaylawns, trees andbushes. Expertshave decided tokeep the canalformed by theflood waters, andto reinforce it withrock walls.Consequentlythere is muchmore space forwater to flow downto the dam. Thewalls of the damhave beenreinforced, newroads have beenconstructed and a

new visitors’ lapa has been built highabove the current floodmark,” he said.It was also explained that none of the

nearly 140 permanent staff memberswere affected by the flood and theclosing of the resort. De Wet said thatthe time was used for further training, cleaning, reparations and upgrades tothe resorts. The costs of restorations are estimated

to amount to more or less R50 million, but this is yet to be finalized. On the day of the reopening the resort

welcomed a group of school students atthe environmental centre. The resort also welcomed its first

conference and its first wedding will takeplace during this month.

people went to confirm and enquiredfrom the municipality.“We had to delay the ceremony for

some hours to allow for a grave to bedug. The grave was only availableafter 9am,” he said. The taxi association was said to have

The sometimes rocky relationshipbetween the Department of Labourand organized labour unions may bemore friendly in the future. The Department of Labour’s

Provincial Chief Inspector PhaswaneTladi assured unions that a newstrategy has been drawn up to assistthem with all their needs for thebenefit of freshly developed workingrelations which should alleviate theplight of vulnerable workers in thecountry.Departmental spokesperson

Johannes Mokou told The BEAT thatby addressing this, the departmentaims to bridge the gap betweenthem and the unions. He added that talks between the

two parties have been held in thehope to educate the inspectorateabout the role of unions in reducingnoncompliance in the workplace, among other things. TheDepartment also wants to producean environment where organizedlabour can have access to everylabour office and seek help withoutquestions. In a statement released on

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)in Bela Bela commended the mayor,Lucas Nhlapo, saying that they areexpecting a fruitful term of office fromhim. This follows talks between theparties on Monday, 1 September.Nhlapo promised to provide the

cemetery that Pienaarsrivier residentshave been urgently requesting for sometime, which will allow the residents thereto bury their loved ones locally. He also said that the municipality

cannot cancel their contract withEskom for supplying electricity toresidents, but can only decrease thecosts.“These charges help us to deliver

improved services which residents needto pay for. Pienaarsrivier and Masakhanewill also be buying their electricity fromthe municipality soon. As themunicipality, we aim to eradicate informalsettlements and beautify the town andtownship to make it more attractive toinvestors. Rightful RDP beneficiaries willbe returned to their homes and unlawfuloccupants evicted,” he said. The EFF welcomed Nhlapo’’s response

on the matter of former mayor FreddyHlungwane’s alleged improper dealings inRDP houses. Nhlapo said that themunicipality plans to prioritize theinvestigation into this situation.“We are glad that the mayor

acknowledges that proper channels shouldbe followed if Hlungwane is found to have

committed fraud. He abused his powersas a leader then and took advantage ofthe poor instead of advising them properly.Property is a good investment but heinstead added to the issue of landlesspeople who are also disadvantaged,” saidthe party’s Bela Bela Sub-RegionalConvener, Sello Mosweu.Hlungwane has said in the past that he

welcomes the allegations by the EFF, butsaid that all these allegations are falsebecause the only RDP house he has in hisname was for his late father, and wasinherited by him after his father passedaway.“The other house was given to my sister

by our aunt, who has moved in with herhusband, and my sister bought the otherone for family business. If people who are

close to me own a house or a stand, thatdoes not mean that it’s mine. I can’t stopvisiting my family because of the bitter ordesperate EFF members who want tocampaign in my ward against me. Theycan go to the municipality or deeds officeand check on the situation,” he said.“I am a leader and I know how to look

after the poor. The EFF is misleading thepublic and calling meetings in my ward tomake people turn against me. The personbehind this is a family member who isjealous of my achievements.” Hlungwanesaid that it is unfortunate that he cannotafford to sue the family member fordefamation of character, and has instead tofocus on making sure that the people in hisward receives services until the elections in2016.

Photo of the week

Last week was Arbor Week. Forseven days, a big fuss was madeabout the environment. Treeswere planted. Lectures weregiven. It was all very nice. The problem, of course, is that

Nature isn’t just for September.Right now, people from around

the world are campaigning via theInternet and in person to stop theAustralian government granting apermit that wold permit dumpingin the Great Barrier Reef. TheGreat Barrier Reef, for those whodon’t know, is a massive coralreef. It’s one of the mostbeautiful places on Earth but, more than that, it’s a researchopportunity like nothing else thatexists in the world. And a couple of big companies

and the Australian governmentare willing to destroy it for thesake of profits. The permits, ifthey are granted — which islooking thankfully unlikely, sincethe site is in the process of beingdeclared a World Heritage Site— will allow the dumping of trashon this fragile ecosystem. In ahundred years we may seepictures of miles and miles ofdead grey coral buried under aflood of old televisions.Closer to home, our national

parks are struggling to securefunding for themselves, andstruggling to attract guests.People just don’t seem to be allthat interested in nature at themoment. Some people say that we have

bigger problems. What theyreally mean is that we havesmaller problems. We have ourown petty problems. Jobs thatdon’t pay, an economy that lookslike it’s going to crash and burnevery other week. Things likethat. In some ways, climate change

and nature preservation present aproblem that’s too big for us tograsp. The effects of what we donow won’t be felt for anotherhundred years at the very least. The pollution we pump into the

air now is the pollution that ourchildren or our children’s childrenwill be trying to breathe. While Arbor Week is a good

beginning, it’s not enough. Weas South Africans, as custodiansof a diverse and thrivingecosystem, need to do more toprotect our environment. As ourmunicipality is fond of remindingus ‘working together, we can domore.’We need to work together and

clean up our country.

Ramatapa, resident of Bela Bela, writes:The recent spate of theft of Flat screenTV’s is getting out of control if crimewas under control at all, it was threeweeks ago when I got a call from mysister telling me her TV has been stolen. We were preparing for a funeral athome and thought maybe the criminalstook advantage of her absence in herhouse but I was wrong. This happenedin the early morning. Two weeks latertwo more houses were targeted and Iam told a couple more TVs were stolen. Then I started convincing myself that

this type of crime will soon beeliminated. By who? I came to realisethat since it is the same type of crimehappening in our small community, weas the community can assist big time inhelping the police resolve this type ofcrime and many other types of crimes. We need to come together as one and

plan a way forward on how we canassist the police in tracking down theculprits. Don’t wait until it happens toyou, let us forget about our partypolitical differences for now and beunited against crime.I understand it is not always easy to

initiate a meeting by just an ordinarycommunity member. I therefore call onthe Honourable Mayor Lucas Nhlapo tofacilitate this type of community venturewith the powers vested to him as thenumber one resident of Bela Bela. This will go a long way in helping unite

our beloved community.
