of Riga are in no rush. Yet, inspired by

the country’s long history and thriving

metal industry, their pieces ofer a new

twist on classic motifs and themes.

his son. It is a Latvian custom that a Namejs

ring is presented to a boy in early adolescence.

That such rings are often the work of

contemporary designers makes them a perfect

example of the way traditional symbolism

continues to be relevant in the modern age.

One design team creating modern-day

Namejs pieces are Inita and Vitauts Straupe

of the jewellery company Baltu Rotas. Under

their 15-year-old label they reproduce classic

Baltic designs in silver, gold and bronze. As well

as rings and bracelets in the Namejs style, they

design link bracelets with delicate silver charms.

The duo is fascinated by mystical symbolism

and in particular the sun. ‘Sometimes people

do not believe that items so modern and

wearable are copied from ancient jewellery,’

the designers say.

The Rose of Turaida is a true story about

a beautiful Latvian girl who sacrifced her

life for love and honour in the 17th century.

It became synonymous with romance and

devotion, and Inita and Vitauts Straupe draw

on its symbolism in their Heavy Romantic

collection. This features silver and bronze

coiled into roses in intricately carved pendants,

bracelets, rings and earrings. The Straupes’

work is shown in Latvian museums as well

as at the designers’ Tornis Galleries, one at

Turaida castle near Sigulda, and another in

Riga’s Old Town, tucked away behind St Peter’s

church and marked by a Trojan-style wooden

horse outside it.

Girts Cirulis is a ffth-generation Rigan

and a jewellery designer whose connection

with the city has had a powerful infuence

on his work. ‘I really love Riga,’ he says.

‘The architecture is a wonderful source

of inspiration, especially the art nouveau

buildings.’ Using yellow, pink, white

and red gold as well as platinum, Cirulis

produces elaborate, jewel-encrusted earrings

and necklaces that are red-carpet-worthy

designs. His men’s collection, with its solid,

signet-style rings, plays on references to

traditional Latvian symbolism with added

quirky elements such as a lion’s head

or vibrantly coloured stone. ‘Traditionally,

Latvian symbolism is the most dominant

theme in Riga’s jewellery design. My design

is more modern, I try to trust my vision

and feelings.’

For authentic Latvian designs with

a modern feel, the Putti gallery, owned by

Agita Putane, features the work of graduates

from the Art Academy of Latvia, making it

one of the foremost venues of jewellery design

in Riga. Among the collections on sale are

creations by Guntis Lauders, many of whose

designs are inspired by mythical creatures.

Silver is combined with ebony and ivory in

such a way as almost to give these natural

materials a new dimension. Lauders’s

signature design is a clever, two-cylinder ring

that looks as if it is composed of separate pieces.

Putti also showcases the romantic designs of Māris Šustiņš, a designer whose metalwork takes a refreshingly diferent approach and steers away from geometric shapes. Silver and gold castings are combined with coral, pearl and enamel and worked into rounded shapes that echo the natural world. The end results are striking avant-garde necklaces and rings.

With our increasing appetite for all things new, it’s reassuring to fnd a community of designers inspired by the traditional symbols and historic motifs of their culture, with precious metals remaining at the heart of what they do. Maybe it’s because, as Šustiņš points out, ‘Silver is always the same, today or a thousand years ago.’ So jewellery design, in this part of Europe at least, will continue to combine the old with the newbalturotas.lv, gcirulis.com, putti.lv, lauders.lv

Ivars Jakovels. And it’s no wonder; here you

can buy unique Latvian produce including sea

buckthorn syrup, hemp butter and kvass – a

non-alcoholic drink made from fermented rye

bread – as well as knitwear, amber and wicker

items from local craftspeople.

Riga’s city council approved the building

of a central food market in 1922, with the

market fnally opening eight years later. Trade

department manager Klavs Lawrence came

up with the idea of using immense Zeppelin

hangars to house the stalls, but his designs were

modifed in order to ensure these mammoth

structures remained at a constant temperature

inside. It took more than six million bricks to

of architecture’, as Jakovels calls them, are still

in use and remain an impressive sight.

Some of the stallholders have been regular

features of the central market almost since its

opening. ‘We have traders who have worked

in the market for 20, 30 and even more than

50 years,’ Jakovels explains. ‘The oldest trader

started to trade here with her mother in the late

1930s. She lived, and still lives, in the village

of Ķekava some 10km from Riga and the family

has always sold milk and dairy products in

the market.’

As well as preserving its heritage, Riga’s

central market is also looking to the future.

‘Our fsh pavilion is the biggest fsh market

in the three Baltic countries,’ Jakovels explains.

‘We are going to modernise it, because it’s

our investment in fsh trading in Latvia.’

For those who prefer their markets smaller

and more intimate, Bergs Bazaar ofers an

the city. ‘Bergs Bazaar farmers’ market was

one of the frst eco-products markets with

products directly from Latvian farmers,’ says

its marketing manager Kristiāna Skābarde.

‘Everything you can buy there is natural, local

and without GMO, so it is a trusted traditional

produce market.’

Held in the Bergs Bazaar arcade on the

second and fourth Saturday of the month,

the market attracts a dedicated following with

its Latvian cuisine, local crafts and vibrant

atmosphere. Visit to sample homemade ice

cream, candied berries, cheese and smoked

meats. In addition, there are local chefs such

says Skābarde.

Tirdziņš. The market-style concept showcases

Puriņš-Purviņš from Mildas Tirdziņš believes

it is the place to visit if you want to sample

products from long-standing local food

purveyors. ‘Most of the shops have been here

from the start, such as Daugava (selling milk

and dairy products from Aizkraukle), Trikātas

Siers (diferent types of cheese and other dairy

products), Lāči (bread baked to a special

recipe) and Ķekava (chickens from a farm in

Ķekava).’ Not only are these companies well

known, but the shopkeepers go the extra mile

to ensure you pick up exactly what you want.
