Benjamin Yudin, Rabbi Andrew Markowitz, Associate Rabbi Shomrei Torah Noach - Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan 1 Cheshvan, 5778/ October 20-21, 2017 PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: In Honor of Shabbat Noach & Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan Rashi at the end of Bereshit (6:7) explains why the animals had to be destroyed. 1: They too were influenced by the immorality of man. 2: Since everything and all creatures were created for man there was no longer any need for them. At the beginning of Parshat Noach, Hashem tells Noach He will destroy es haaretz” (6:13). Rashi teaches that es lerabos comes to include 3 tefachim (about 11 inches) of the ground itself was also washed away. Why? I heard in the name of Rav Eliyahu Mishkovsky ztl that the Talmud Pesachim (31b) teaches that monies and valuables were saved and preserved by their being buries in the ground. The primary sin of the generation of the flood was that of gezel thievery. Since 3 tefachim of the ground became acces- sories to their crime they too were washed away. Hashem gave mankind a new, clean, fresh start, the rest is up to us. NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS This week both classes are using Parshat Bereishit as springboards for learning across the Early Childhood curriculum. The Early Learners focused on the properties of light and dark. They closed the lights in the classroom and turned them back on to show the difference between light and dark. They also used a flashlight to illustrate the concept. They separated lego blocks into two piles, one blue and one green, just as Hashem separated the earth and sky. The Young Explorers learned that before Hashem creat-ed the world it was "tohu vavohu." To illustrate this idea the children splat-tered different colored paints all over a white oak tag and observed how "tohu vavohu" must have looked before Hashem organized and created the world. To reinforce Math concepts, the children played Musical Chairs with 7 chairs corresponding to the 7 days of creation. They also played and counted with black and white Othello discs. The children also enjoyed learn-ing about clouds and had fun making a shadow box and shining a flashlight on the hidden items. We enjoyed yummy Bereishit treats including Oreos(dark and light) cookies and blue jello(sky) with whipped cream (clouds) on top! Shabbat Shalom!

Save the date: Monday, November 13th at 8:00 p.m.The Leah Sokol-off Nursery School invites parents of pre-schoolers to an informative evening of discussion with our Educational Consultant, Esther Feil.
