Purpose

Bring CMS functionality to SharePoint:• Creation of pages with different layouts

that are stored as files in special Pages library with all metadata

• Authoring practices• Publishing schedules


Features

2 Features:• Site Collection• Web


Functionality


Lists and Libraries – Site Collection Level

• Content and Structure Reports list. Used to customize the queries that appear in the View list in the Site Content and Structure tool

• Reusable Content list. Contains HTML or text content that can be inserted into Web pages

• Site Collection Documents library. Stores documents that are used throughout the site collection

• Site Collection Images library. Stores images that are used throughout the site collection.


Lists and Libraries – Site Level

• Pages library. Stores site pages• Images library. Holds images used on site

pages• Documents library. Contains all documents

used on site pages


Groups

• Approvers• Designers• Hierarchy Managers• Quick Deploy Users• Restricted Readers• Style Resource Readers

Variation

1. Timer Job Based 2. Based on list items3. Very fragile (special fixup tool)4. Need to be careful with usage, usually

simple localization is a better option, cause help avoiding content duplication


Page Approval Workflow (Publishing)

• SPD Workflow, can be customized• Easy to customize if no OOB bugs raised• Suitable for most cases


Web Parts

• Content Query Web Part. Displays a dynamic view of content on your site based on a query you build within the properties pane of the web part

• Media Web Part. Used to embed media clips (video and audio) in a web page

• Summary Links Web Part. Allows authors to create links that can be grouped and styled

• Table of Contents Web Part. Used to automatically generate a site map that point to various parts of your site collection

• UI can be customized using XSL transformations (ContentQueryMain.xsl & ItemStyle.xsl in Style Library)

• Export / Import options very helpful – custom fields can be specified

• No paging support (Imtech Content Query Web Part)

Page Layout Tricks

• Ghosted Page Layouts can be deployed through package and then updated using Update-SPSolution command. It’s not recommended to unghoste them using a SPD or uploading a new version using UI.

• After creating a page from Page Layout, VS will not be able to delete page layout that is in use and page layout will not be updated.

• It’s not possible to edit page created from Page Layout in SPD. You can add it to regular Web Part page, export and import through browser to Page Layout based page.

• Field validation is not straight forward, custom JS validation can be used.
